• Animating eyes in Blender through face capture

In case you missed it, Filmmaker and Animator Will Anderson has recently been experimenting with combining Blender's Geometry Nodes and iPhone's ARKit to capture facial movements and translate them into animations. The latest demo shows a pair of digital googly eyes that move as he blinks and winks in real life.

  • Motion capture with deformations

A research team from Max Planck Institute for Informatics and Valeo.ai presented a new approach to mocap with deformations. Titled Decaf, it is a method for setting up 3D hand and face reconstructions. The team describes it as the first monocular motion capture method from a video that regresses 3D hand and face motions along with deformations arising from their interactions.

  • Impressive mocap results inside Unreal Engine 5 🖐

Beatrice Schmidt demonstrated the results of experiments with motion capture for body and face inside UE5. The artist used the Xsens mocap suit and Faceware's facial capture system to capture movements. The data was then retargeted to the character's skeleton with some manual tweaks for smooth finger movement.
