• Fabrics Like Polyester Can Contain a Number of Chemicals That Might Impact Fertility

The epidermisis the body’s largest organ, so it would make sense that toxins found in fabrics that sit on the skin’s surface could be absorbed by the skin and make their way into the bloodstream. And polyester has been considered a particularly suspect fabric because it’s made from a chemical called polyethylene terephthalate, a plastic polymer used in various products. One study published in 1993 followed 24 dogs who were divided into two equal groups, one group wore cotton underpants and the other polyester. At the end of the study period, there was a significant decrease in sperm count and an increase in sperm abnormalities in the dogs who wore the polyester pants. But that said, this study is three decades old, done on dogs, and has had little additional research to show for it since. So, the jury is certainly still out as to whether fabrics decrease fertility, but there are some things that we do know. Chemicals Found in PolyesterAccording to Audrey Gaskins, an associate professor of environmental health at Emory University, most studies are focused on specific chemicals that might be found in fabrics rather than the fabrics themselves, and those chemicals are usually measured in blood or urine. But fabrics like polyester can contain a number of chemicals that might impact fertility. PFAS, short for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, are a group of chemicals found in thousands of products, and they’re difficult for the body to eliminate.“PFAS are commonly found in water-resistant clothing,” says Gaskins. However, drinking water is likely the most common avenue of exposure, as well as non-stick cookware, and many others.Research has shown that PFAS can reduce fertility in women by some 40 percent. According to NIH’s National Institute for Environmental Health Sciences, high levels of PFAS found in the blood were linked to a reduced chance of pregnancy and live birth. Other research has shown that PFAS are linked to increased instances of endometriosis and polycystic ovary syndrome, both of which reduce fertility.Poor Pregnancy OutcomesPolyestermay also contain bisphenol A, another chemical compound that has been shown to potentially impact fertility. A December 2022 study published in the Journal of Clinical Medicine found a higher prevalence of PCOS in women with high amounts of BPA in their blood. Finally, polyester can contain phthalates, a chemical commonly used in things like sports bras and other pieces of clothing. These, too, have been shown to have a negative impact on fertility. A study published in the September 2021 issue of the journal Best Practice & Research Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism found that higher concentrations of the chemical have been associated with decreased rates of pregnancy, increased incidences of miscarriage, and other pregnancy complications.“We’ve found suggestive associations between higher concentrations of bisphenol and phthalate metabolites and worse markers of reproductive health like poor success with IVF,” says Gaskins. “What we don’t know is where the source of exposure is coming from.”Exposure to Fertility-Decreasing ChemicalsStill, the obvious implication if you’re trying to get pregnant is to try to decrease your exposure to any of these chemicals through any route possible, especially when you have control over exposure. If we know there are chemicals in these fabrics, decreasing use of them would be more achievable for many people compared to, say, changing your drinking water, says Gaskins. There’s definitely no downside to decreasing your exposure to these chemicals, and while clothing is likely not the largest means of exposure to things like PFAs, phthalates, and BPA, if you’re trying to get pregnant, they’re certainly a good place to start. This article is not offering medical advice and should be used for informational purposes only.Article SourcesOur writers at Discovermagazine.com use peer-reviewed studies and high-quality sources for our articles, and our editors review for scientific accuracy and editorial standards. • Fiat + Kartell Take the Wheel in a Design-First Reboot of the Grande Panda

In the 1950s, Kartell wasn’t yet known for its iconic plastic furniture, but it was already making waves in Italian design. One of its earliest, most unexpected products? A sleek, functional ski rack made for a Fiat. Decades later, the two Italian icons reunite for something a little more ambitious: the Fiat Grande Panda Kartell. This concept car reimagines Fiat’s beloved boxy silhouette with a design-first makeover, infused with Kartell’s signature color-blocking, material innovation, and bold personality.

More than just a stylish refresh, the Fiat Grande Panda Kartell reflects shared values between the brands: simplicity, functionality, and accessibility. Fiat brings its automotive legacy; Kartell adds a forward-thinking approach to material and form. Unveiled at Milan Design Week 2025, the vehicle challenges what a car can look and feel like when design takes the driver’s seat.

At first glance, it’s impossible to miss the fiery red exterior, a high-energy hue that nods to Kartell’s signature color. Contrasting black panels add a sharp color-blocked effect, dialing up the visual impact. Kartell’s iconic ‘K’ logo is stamped throughout the car, appearing on everything from the third pillar to the thermo-embossed upholstery.

Inside, design lovers will spot a cheeky Easter egg: a mini version of Kartell’s iconic lamp, cleverly positioned on the dashboard cluster as a playful wink to Kartell’s lighting legacy.

True to form, Kartell also brings its material expertise to the table. Polycarbonate 2.0 – a second-generation polymer made from renewable sources – makes its way into the car’s interior elements. Known for its durability and lightweight nature, the material is a subtle callback to Kartell’s most celebrated, sustainable designs.

Even the upholstery leans into innovation. A “tex to tex” process transforms production scraps from Kartell’s Foliage armchair into fibers, which are then re-spun into 100% recycled polyester yarn for the seat covers. The result is a tactile interior that looks great, feels great, and makes a case for circular design in the automotive world.

As more brands team up in unexpected ways, it’s refreshing to see two Italian legends reconnect through a shared history and a deep love for design. More than just a moment in Milan, the Fiat Grande Panda Kartell celebrates heritage while pushing boldly into the future. Stylish, sustainable, and distinctly Italian, it’s proof that when design leads the way, everyone wants a seat at the table – or in this case, behind the wheel.

  • 12 Small Sectional Sofas That Are Truly Stylish (2025)

Small sectional sofasare just the right seating solution for those with cramped spaces who recognize that it’s not humanly possible to get cozy on a loveseat. “A sectional can give you that maxed-out seating and help the room feel like a cozy nook, not a cramped back office,” says designer Caroline Burke of Anna Burke Interiors.Though sectionals in all their long configurations can feel counterintuitive for small spaces, designer Ashley Darryl says the opposite is often true. “Sometimes using several small pieces can make a room feel cluttered,” says of the sofa-chair-table cluster that’s become de rigueur in living rooms. Whether your goal is to fit the whole family for movie night or just successfully stretch out completely solo, the right-size sectional can transform a cramped room in unexpected ways.“Typically, sectionals can double your seating,” notes AD100 interior designer Victoria Hagan, and author of Live Now. Burke agrees, adding that choosing a piece with a low back and arms can “help a small room not feel engulfed by a piece of furniture.”To help with your seating journey, we pulled together our favorite sectionals for small spaces—from bouclé beauties to rawhide leather configurations. A room tight on space can benefit from couches with storage, like those from Albany Park. Now you’ll be able to minimize the clutter and extra blankets by stowing them underneath your seat. How do I arrange a sectional in a small space?Don’t fall for the tiniest sectional you can find, but rather invest in something well-made—it plays a big part in your living room, after all. While it may seem counterintuitive, Nashville interior designer Amanda Khouri says, “Filling a small room with small furniture can make it feel…well, smaller.”Designer Alicia Murphy used a sectional in the living room of a teensy trailer she converted into a plush family getaway in Montauk, New York, for this very reason: “If you use a corner sectional rather than a sofa and chair, you most likely will add seating for two or three more people,” Murphy explains, noting that the alternative prevents you from having about 36 inches of dead space in the corner.”

12 Small Sectional Sofas That Are Truly Stylish (2025)
Small sectional sofas (which are a thing, trust us) are just the right seating solution for those with cramped spaces who recognize that it’s not humanly possible to get cozy on a loveseat. • 6 Best Silk Sheets in 2025, Tested by AD Editors

When it comes to bedding that’s soft and supple, the best silk sheets are hard to beat. Unlike other materials like a textured linen or crisp percale, these have a glossy look and feel that you won’t quite find in another set. What’s more, they are just as versatile as they are stylish. Silk of the highest quality is characterized as a hypoallergenic, naturally breathable fabric, which is great for hot sleepers and sleepers with sensitive skin. Plus, many sets come in neutral and bright colorways to play off of your bedroom’s design. To get a real feel for the best sets out there, our editors got to work by sleeping in on our favorite sets on the market. And since top-tier silk sheets tend to be pricey, we’ve also sprinkled in some affordable alternative options like satin and bamboo. They might trick you into thinking they’re the real thing. Here, find all of our favorites to enhance your sleep experience and self-care routine. Our Top Picks for the Best Silk Sheets:Best Overall Silk Sheets: Quince Mulberry Silk Sheet Set, Best Splurge: Clementine Sleepwear Atelier Medica Organic Silk Fitted Base Sheet, A Sustainable Set: Lunya Quintessential Bedding Set, Best Silk Alternative: Ettitude CleanBamboo Sheet Set, Most Affordable: Bedsure Satin Sheets, For Hot Sleepers: Luxome Luxury Sheet Set, Browse by CategoryFor consistency, all prices reflect queen sizes in this story. The Best Silk Sheets, OverallQuince Mulberry Silk Sheet SetUpsides & DownsidesUpsides: Affordable, machine washable, made of 100% mulberry silkDownsides: Only available in a few neutral colorsSpecsMaterial: 100% mulberry silkSizes: Queen, kingColors: 3Includes: Fitted sheet, flat sheet, and 2 pillowcasesCare instructions: Machine washable, air-dry recommendedQuince is already one of our favorite destinations for luxury-on-a-budget sleep essentials. While you’ll find an affordable price point here too, the quality of these 100% mulberry silk sheets isn’t something to skip over. Senior commerce editor Nashia Baker keeps these high-quality sheets in rotation since they’re both durable and easy to care for. They are machine washable—she just keeps them with like colors for safe measure, though. From there, an air-dry gets the sheets back to their best condition. Even if you don't notice an immediate change from tumble drying, the brand says this practice can weaken the silk. As someone whose skin has gotten more sensitive over time, she appreciates the hypoallergenic, temperature-regulating material that feels soothing to sink into each night. These sheets have a 22 momme count. We dive into this more in our FAQ section, but this count essentially indicates a durable weave, and Baker says they've held up well without tears or color fading in sight.Best SplurgeClementine Atelier Medica Silk Fitted SheetUpsides & DownsidesUpsides: No off-gassing, tester says the deep hue pairs well with neutral bedding, infused with ingredients like hyaluronic acidDownsides: PriceySpecsMaterial: 100% GOTS certified organic silk beddingSizes: Twin, full, queen, kingColors: 2Includes: Fitted sheetCare instructions: Machine wash on the most delicate setting in a “silk-only” load with mild detergent. Or, hand wash with a mild detergent and gently massage the fabric for one minute to remove dirt and let it soak for the next four minutes. Rinse in fresh cold water. Do not use bleach or a fabric softener. Hang in a shady spot away from the sun to air-dry.Calling them “extremely soft and rich-feeling,” commerce writer Julia Harrison coats her bed with this silk set and adds that they’re the “kind of splurge that just feels like self-care every time you slip into it.” While they’re steeper in price, the brand notes that these sheets boast infused with ingredients like hyaluronic acid designed to leave skin feeling dewy and soothed. Harrison says she sleeps easily with these sheets and felt like they were ready for use out of the box with little to no off-gassing.All that aside, these sheets can instantly dress up a moody or minimalist bedroom at any given moment with the pearl white and navy blue hues. Although Harrison has a bohemian-meets-Danish design style in her space, she found the navy blue color to be surprisingly subtle. “It wasn’t screaming: silk sheets, or even worse: navy blue sheets,” she says. “I tucked it under my white duvet and it gave a really interesting contrast.”A Sustainable SetPhoto: Nashia BakerPhoto: Nashia BakerLunya Quintessential Bedding SetUpsides & DownsidesUpsides: Made of natural wood tencel fibers, soft, durable materialDownsides: Duvet and sheet set are sold separatelySpecsMaterial: 100% tencelSizes: Queen, king, California kingColors: WhiteIncludes: Fitted sheet, flat sheet, and 2 pillowcasesCare instructions: Machine wash cold and tumble dry low.Take it from Baker: Lunya’s silky sheets are a dream. At first glance, she mistook these as mulberry silk because of their glossy look. In actuality, these sheets are made of a natural fiber called tencel, which is a wood-based material. The brand notes that the bedding is biodegradable and created using an earth-friendly, closed-loop process that uses recycled materials. These are naturally breathable while also boasting a softness that she hasn’t quite felt in a standard silk set. “I wouldn’t consider myself a hot sleeper, but since NYC weather is constantly up and down, I like something that’s both airy and soft,” she says. “I sleep under the top sheet and duvet with no problem; the set keeps me comfortable during in-between spring weather that hits around the 50s and 60s.”While the duvet is sold separately, it's a plus to pair with the sheet set since it's just as durable. “I’ve had the same textured comforter with yellow embroidery for years now, and I feared that the design would show through the duvet cover since the only color Lunya has as of now is white,” Baker says. “I was pleasantly surprised to see that the duvet covered it all without any color peeking through.”Best Silk AlternativeEttitude CleanBamboo Sheet SetUpsides & DownsidesUpsides: 8 colors available, Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certified, hypoallergenicDownsides: Some colors sell out quicklySpecsMaterial: 100% CleanBamboo LyocellSizes: Twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, California kingColors: 8Includes: 1 fitted sheet, 1 flat sheet, 2 pillowcase. Line dry or tumble dry low. Don't use bleach or fabric softener."These sheets are buttery—pun intended,” says Baker, who has this set in the butter colorway. These are made from a patented CleanBamboo fabric that leaves the sheets with a silky sateen finish. She says they have gotten noticeably softer over time with a routine wash and dry. Plus, they are a bit thinner in a good way than other bamboo-like sets, as Baker says it leaves them with an airier feel. If trendy pastel yellow isn’t your preference, these sheets also come in several neutral and vibrant hues like sage and saffron. Most AffordableBedsure Satin SheetsUpsides & DownsidesUpsides: Affordable alternative, smooth feel, easy careDownsides: Some color might bleed on pillows after the first couple of usesSpecsMaterial: 100% polyester satinSizes: Twin, full, queen, king, California kingColors: 22Includes: Fitted sheet, flat sheet, and 2 pillowcasesCare instructions: Machine washable in cold water. Tumble dry on low.Another alternative to add to cart, these satin sheets have a smooth texture and come in nearly two dozen colors to match your bedroom. And coming in at just they have more of an approachable price tag while still boasting the overall look of silk. The sheets are more slippery than a standard silk set, but the appearance itself doesn't give that away. Baker has these in burgundy and says the rich hue really shows through in person. She did notice some color bleeding on her pillows after the first couple of uses, so something to be mindful of if you opt for a deep color. For Hot SleepersPhoto: Nashia BakerLuxome Luxury Sheet SetUpsides & DownsidesUpsides: Unique colors available, deep pockets, breathableDownsides: The brand recommends washing alone on the delicate cycleSpecsMaterial: 100% Viscose from BambooSizes: Twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, California king, and split kingColors: 12Includes: 1 fitted sheet, 1 flat sheet, 2 pillowcase. Full, queen, king, California king, and split king sizes include 2 pillowcases; twin and twin XL include 1 standard pillowcase.Care instructions: Machine wash in cold water on a delicate cycle with a mild, liquid detergent. Don't use bleach, fabric softener, stain removers, or scent boosters. Tumble dry with low heat. These are our favorite cooling sheets for those seeking a glam aesthetic. Baker says this bamboo set is great for people like her who crave something cool-to-the-touch without sacrificing style. “These sheets have the same appearance to me as a high-end set of silk or satin without the cost,” she says, adding that they have dramatic drape. “These are even more unique because of the jewel tones, like sapphire, that are hard to find with other brands,” she says. Baker keeps her bedscape full with a mattress topper and protector, and she says these deep-pocket sheets fit easily over it all. While she says she’s generally a cold sleeper, the bamboo material is perfectly breathable for hot NYC days. How We TestedFrom bamboo to linen sheets, our testing process for sheets is one in the same at AD: Just like fellow shoppers, our editors bring sets in their homes to see if they really hold up for routine use. We had these silk and silk alternative sheets in our homes for about a month, if not more, to go through the process of washing and sleeping on them. Here areMaterial: There are several silk and silk alternative fabrics to choose from, but our list consists of pure mulberry silk, bamboo varieties, and satin that all have a similar look and feel. When shopping for pure silk, be sure look for bedding labels that note 100% mulberry silk, also known as natural silk. If you're looking for options that mirror the look of silk, 100% viscose from bamboo is typically durable and has less strict care instructions, especially tumble drying. Satin tends to be slightly more slippery in texture, but these usually still offer a silky look.Care: For streamlined care, we tested a variety of options that span hand washing to machine washing, as well as tumble drying and air-drying. Since pure silk can sometimes weaken from abrasive wash and dry cycles, it's typically recommended to hand wash and air-dry.FAQsAre Silk Sheets Really Worth It?While 100% mulberry sheets tend to be an investment price-wise, we think it's worthwhile. These can act as cooling sheets, as the material is naturally breathable for a good night's rest. And because of their smooth nature, they can leave a polished aesthetic in any bedroom. With the right care—typically machine washing on a delicate cycle or hand washing and air drying—the best silk sheets can last for years. What’s a Momme Count?A momme count is the measurement that reflects the weight of silk. Typically, the higher the momme count, the denser the fabric. Any momme count above 20 momme, like our Quince pick, is pretty standard and ensures the material is sturdy and designed to last.

They are machine washable—she just keeps them with like colors for safe measure, though. From there, an air-dry gets the sheets back to their best condition. Even if you don't notice an immediate change from tumble drying, the brand says this practice can weaken the silk. #best #silk #sheets #tested #editors

  • 9 Best Cooling Mattresses of 2025, Tested by AD Editors

While you can invest in high-quality sheets, the best cooling mattresses are a great foundation for a good night’s sleep. These beds are often equipped with proper air flow and temperature-regulating technologies that might just end the tossing-and-turning in the middle of the night, especially if you’re sleeping hot.To help along the way, AD editors and contributors set out to test the best in their homes. Cooling features our team kept an eye out for include everything from gel-infused foam to pocketed coils that help with motion isolation. We also looked at different mattress typesand considered a variety of firmness levels. Below are some of our favorites, many of which come with a lengthy trial period, solid warranties, and even white glove delivery. Take a peek at the best cooling mattress options to suit your needs. Our Top Picks for the Best Cooling Mattresses:Best Overall Cooling Mattress: Cocoon by Sealy The Chill Mattress, A Smart Option: Sleep Number i8 Mattress, Best Hybrid Mattress: Saatva Latex Hybrid Mattress, The Budget Pick: Allswell Supreme Mattress, Best Memory Foam Mattress: GhostBed Luxe Foam Mattress, Browse by CategoryFor consistency, all of the prices in this list reflect queen sizes. The Cooling Mattress, OverallCocoon by Sealy Chill MattressUpsides & DownsidesUpsidesAffordableIncludes free Sealy Sleep BundleMemory foam layers adjust to sleep positionDownsidesLeans more firm than medium, according to our testerSpecsMattress type: Memory foamMaterials: Cooling cover, memory foam, cushioning foamFirmness: Medium-FirmWarranty: 100-night sleep trial, 10-year warranty“While my previous mattress was on the firmer side, it was not a memory foam or very cool mattress,” says contributor Cade Hiser in his review. “With the Cocoon Chill memory foam mattress, I do not wake up in the middle of the night like I used to, tossing and turning. I also stay sleeping at a comfortable temperature throughout the night.” The mattress clearly prioritizes body temperature control—hence the name. Commemorating the spirit of resilience and transformation, the “Hug Me” Chair emerges as an emotional and artistic response to three decades of inspiration drawn from Steel-Land, a powerhouse in China’s high-end home furnishings industry. This chair pays homage to Steel-Land’s journey, channeling its story of growth, endurance, and heartfelt connection with customers into a single, memorable piece of design.
The genesis of the Hug Me Chair stems from the symbolic narrative of Steel-Land’s 30-year milestone. From its early days in 1993, when it entered the market with innocent ambition, to its current position as a trusted industry name, Steel-Land’s evolution is reflected in the chair’s enveloping form. The chair’s extended armrests, mimicking an embrace, represent both affection and gratitude, encapsulating the emotional warmth and recognition that Steel-Land sought and eventually earned.
    Designer: Zipeng Zhou

The Hug Me Chair distinguishes itself with a design that speaks volumes. Its naturally flowing armrests create a visual and tactile representation of a hug, giving users a sense of emotional and physical comfort. Meanwhile, the solid and grounded base evokes stability and strength, symbolizing not only durability but also the firm foundation that inspired this design. This thoughtful balance of emotional narrative and practical form gives the Hug Me Chair a unique presence, equal parts sculpture and sanctuary.
The chair invites interaction through its variety of fabrics and colors, offering personalized luxury. The polyester fiber option, enhanced by advanced 3D technology, delivers a soft, breathable, and deformation-resistant texture. The lambswool variant, with its delicate curl and warmth, mirrors natural wool, offering comfort and a cozy aesthetic. Both fabrics are resistant to pilling and wear, maintaining a pristine look over time.

Multiple color options allow the Hug Me Chair to adapt easily to a range of interiors, from understated modern to relaxed rustic, creating spaces that feel grounded, inviting, and distinctly human.
Designed with ergonomic precision, the Hug Me Chair supports relaxation in any setting. Its 105-degree reclining backrest complements the human form, making it ideal for reading, lounging, or shared moments at home. The inner metal framework is paired with slow-rebound molded foam for a seating experience that is both firm and cloud-like.

Exquisite hand-stitching, an integrated molding structure, and glue-free construction contribute to its structural integrity and environmental consciousness. With lotus leaf bionic technology applied to the fabric, the chair resists water and stains, allowing for effortless maintenance without compromising its luxurious look and feel.
At the heart of the Hug Me Chair is a careful negotiation between visual expression and everyday functionality. The design challenge was to maintain a distinct, sculptural aesthetic while enhancing comfort and ensuring long-term durability. Through meticulous research and craftsmanship, this balance was achieved, resulting in a product that offers as much meaning as it does comfort.

  • Design Opportunity: Create a Better Portable Tufting Frame

What the drafting board is to draftspeople, and the easel is to painters, the tufting frame is to tufters. Tufting is sort of a cross between sewing and embroidery. A backing material like burlap, linen or polyester is stretched over a frame and held in place with nails or tack strips.Image: Emilymaayy, CC BY-SA 4.0 A pattern is drawn onto the fabric. Working from the back side of the backing material, the tufter then punches yarn through it, creating a loop or pile on the front. Each individual pile is essentially the tufter's pixel, and by following the pattern they "draw" an image visible from the front of the backing material. The tool traditionally used was a tufting needle…Image: Auckland Museum, CC BY 4.0 …but today motorized tufting guns are commonly used.Image: KnowledgeBySean, CC BY-SA 4.0 Dedicated rug-making shops have permanent tufting frames sized to their preferences. But for the hobbyist, a tufting frame, like the drafting table, requires a commitment of space. When not in use, a large rectangular frame on legs is not easy to store within the average home. Thus portable tufting frames are on the market, like this one by a tufting startup called ClawLab.The aluminum ClawLab frame can be clamped to a tabletop. With a traditional wooden tufting frame, the backing material is held in place by nails or tack strips. ClawLab instead uses a system of velcro and rods that rotate to draw the fabric around it and hold it taut. It creates, the company reckons, the perfect worksurface on which to use the tufting gun that they also developed. Here's how the system is set up and used:I will say, the vertical orientation doesn't look terribly ergonomic if you're using it in a standing position. I don't know how big the market is, but there is an opportunity here for better design.
