• Summer Game Fest 2025 predictions: Everything we expect from Switch 2 to Splinter Cell

Geoff Keighley has promised a record-breaking number of publishers at Summer Game Fest this year, so we’ve rounded up what we think we’ll be playing in the coming monthsTech23:00, 05 Jun 2025We're so ready to step into Samus' boots againE3 might be long gone, but Summer Game Fest has replaced it. While Nintendo Switch 2 has just launched, and Sony has held its own State of Play event, tonight’s show is about as unpredictable as you can get. So, naturally, we’re trying to predict what we’ll be seeing. With everyone from PlayStation to SEGA, Xbox and even Nintendo making an appearance, we’re expecting big things from the showcase, which will be packed with titles for 2025 and beyond.‌While some are known quantities, like Borderlands 4, Little Nightmares 3, and the upcoming Bond game from Hitman developer IO Interactive, we’re still expecting plenty of surprises. Here’s everything we’re predicting for Summer Game Fest 2025.‌There are plenty of big namesWith Geoff Keighley’s events in both the Summer and December being key fixtures on the gaming events calendar, he’s able to pull off plenty of surprises. The Game Awards 2023 revealed Monster Hunter Wilds, while the following year showcased the first gameplay of Slay The Spire 2 and Split Fiction, as well as Elden Ring Nightreign and Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. As for Summer Game Fest itself, the show last year featured Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero, Kingdom Come: Deliverance II and Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 - all games which were released since then.Article continues belowWe’ve heard rumblings that Capcom’s Pragmata, revealed alongside the PS5 in June 2020, could be shown at the event following an indefinite delay in 2023. It’s just as well, since we have no idea what the game really is yet. We’re also very curious about what Nintendo could show. The Switch 2 is out, but only as of yesterday, so we’d expect a sizzle reel to show what the console is capable of, as well as another look at Donkey Kong Bananza.‌PlayStation is probably easier to predict since the company is launching Hideo Kojima’s Death Stranding 2: On The Beach in just a few short weeks, and Geoff Keighley will likely find some way of getting the man himself on stage.SEGA has plenty to show, too. Sonic Racing CrossWorlds is still due this year, while the company has an ambitious plan to resurrect classic titles starting with Shinobi: Art of Vengeance and leading into Streets of Rage and Crazy Taxi.We tipped a Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 announcement for Sony’s State of Play, but we’re still waiting for more news on Kingdom Hearts 4.‌Pearl Abyss is still aiming to launch Crimson Desert this year, but we’re without a release date as yet, while the company is also working on its colourful DokeV which has been MIA for years at this point. While Microsoft is expected to appear, the company has its own showcase just two days later with a big focus on The Outer Worlds 2. As a result, we might just get a sneak peek at this year’s Call of Duty with more to come on Sunday. With Bungie’s Marathon hit by plagiarism accusations, Embark Studios has a great chance to get players onto Arc Raiders as an alternative. Speaking of Bungie, expect a gameplay trailer for Destiny 2: Edge of Fate.‌Elden Ring is coming to Switch 2Call us crazy, but we want a bunch of Switch 2 news. We want to see From Software’s Duskbloods, get a release date for Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition, and maybe even a Metroid Prime 4 release date from Nintendo itself.Given the history of Monster Hunter on portable consoles, we’ve got everything crossed for the series to come to Switch 2, but coming off of the excellent Wilds, it’s perhaps unlikely.‌Naturally, we’ve always got our fingers crossed that we’ll see Silksong, but rumours have suggested that Team Cherry’s long-awaited Hollow Knight follow-up would be announced at Microsoft’s event if at all.As we said in our State of Play predictions, we’re also expecting to hear more about Resident Evil 9 by the end of this week, in some way, shape, or form. With The Division 2 getting what’s likely its final DLC recently, here’s hoping for The Division 3, which has been rumoured for a while. Or, maybe Ubisoft will finally share something about the Splinter Cell title it has in development.Article continues belowDid we get any correct? • Sega & Lizardcube Talk Shinobi: Art Of Vengeance And How To Modernise A Classic

Subscribe to Nintendo Life on YouTube813k
With Shinobi: Art of Vengeance's release date now just 97 days away, both Sega and Lizardcube have been out and about and making sure to satiate our increasing desire for more information on their upcoming side-scrolling adventure.
Of course, this isn't just any old adventure and, much like Lizardcube's previous work, such as Streets of Rage 4 and Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap, here we have a reworking, a full modernisation after a long period of dormancy, of the one and only Shinobi. The pressure of pulling apart a classic for the ages and rebuilding it in such a way that it satisfies newcomers and the hardcore, whilst also appearing modern and 'good'? These folks have been there and done that.Subscribe to Nintendo Life on YouTube813kWatch on YouTube

Speaking to Games Informer, Kagasei Shimomura, head of Sega's content production unit, revealed how his department had spent time going over 60 years of historic IPs that fall under the Sega umbrella. Settling on the long-dormant Shinobi series, which hasn't seen any new action since 2011's Shinobi 3D on the 3DS, the team started to put plans into action.
Shimomura was aware that some old arcade series had been kept alive to a certain extent through the Sega Ages Collection, but that:

"We didn't just want to go and make remasters or remakes of all the titles that are already around...We want people to enjoy and be satisfied by what we put out there, and find ways to create new Sega fans."

At 2023's Game Awards, with the announcement of a whole swathe of classic reboots from Sega - including Golden Axe- Shimomura's full plans were revealed, with particular attention being paid to Shinobi.
Lizardcube was then drawn into the matter, which is hardly surprising given they'd just turned two retro IPs into critically acclaimed bangers. Luckily, the Parisian dev's CEO and creative director, Ben Fiquet, was excited by the prospect, describing during the interview how his team's blood boiled with excitement, "as big Sega fans", at the idea of getting to work on a brand new Shinobi.
    Images: Lizardcube, Sega
Impressing Sega with a pitch that sought to balance old and new, Lizardcube then agreed that a 2D game as the most effective course of action, one that specifically took its inspiration from Shinobi 1,2 and 3, whilst giving players something new and engaging to sink their big modern teeth into.
    Fiquet explains:

"We soon realized that if you wanted to have the player care about what they will be doing the most, which is fighting, the fighting will need to be more interesting. That’s why you have a lot of moves now, and it’s a very interesting mix because it’s more like a beat-‘em-up in a platforming environment. You have a combo system, you have different moves at your disposal, powers, ultras, and different stuff, so that when the player is doing what they’re doing the most, they are entertained."

Rather than simply licence the IP out to Lizardcube, as had been done with Wonder Boy and Streets of Rage, Sega has gone all-in here, even getting down and dirty and making suggestions regarding the game's art style, the like of which, Fiquet says, is usually reserved for animated movies. Indeed, 1990s Sega hits, The Lion King and Aladdin games, which were sublimely animated it has to be said, are reference points in the look and style being adopted for Shinobi: Art of Vengeance.
    Images: Lizardcube, Dotemu, Lizardcube
In the end, such is Sega's passion for the project, Toru Ohara, a designer with over 30 years experience at Sega, got fully involved with a team of his own, acting as chief producer on the Sega side in order to ensure the correct level of expression, the right brush strokes and, of course, the right amount of respect paid to the old Shinobi games whilst modernising for a new audience.
Ohara himself seems excited and happy with what's being created this far, as he puts it:

"The game starts out as a normal action game, but it does feel much more like a fighting game in the end, where you have all these different combos that you could choose from because you can learn to do more and more and be able to do more and more the further you go."

It's hardly a surprise that the teams involved seem to be killing it thus far, you only have to play Streets of Rage 4 for a very short period of time before realising the high level these folks are working on.
The full interview goes into lots more details on how much Sega decided to get involved, alongside lots more info on some other classics, so make sure to check it out for more tidbits on those. Meanwhile, we're off to do some backflip training and then down the supermarket for a pack of plastic shuriken. Not that we're beyond excited for new Shinobi or anything.

Excited for the return of Shinobi? Make sure to sneak into the comments and take us down with your opinions!

    Dusk Golem:

So RE9 originally started development in 2017. RE9 originally starred Leon & Jill in a fictional island based off Singapore.

HOWEVER, AGAIN, this is the old RE9, the project got a pretty heavy reboot in 2021 around the time Village came out, though a few things stayed the same like Leon is still the main character.

He's also right that that the Rebecca focused Revelations 3 I talked about back in early 2020s was cancelled in 2022, was originally a Switch game first, etc.

I trust Capcom with whatever direction they go next for Resident Evil but it still hurts to hear that Rev 3 was canceled.

Damn, I really loved Revelations 1. Revelations 2 was alright, I didn't enjoy Raid mode here as much as the first game.

I wonder if they're still doing Outbreak.

I mean, if Jill is playable you pretty much have to reboot the whole game. Can't have her leading a new title.

I wonder how many nanoseconds it took for Capcom deves to decide to cut Leon rather than Jill.

She was probably a secundary character though, so it might not even have been a real choice.

And the original version of RE9 was trying to be the opposite of RE7, IE big open world multiplayer game). RE9 originally starred Leon & Jill in a fictional island based off Singapore.

HOWEVER, AGAIN, this is the old RE9, the project got a pretty heavy reboot in 2021 around the time Village came out, though a few things stayed the same like Leon is still the main character.

Hope it's good. They've been on a roll but honestly I'm not really that interested in what they've been doing in RE7 and RE8, story wise. I'd like a Leonfocused game that stands on its own and doesn't have anything to do with the other modern day story shenanigans. Just another RE4 style adventure please.

Resident Evil Massive Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Game? WTF.. that sounds absolutely balls out fucking awesome.

And WTF.. my single player game Capcom!!

I don't know what top think of this news.. if true.

I honestly think this could have been awesome if Capcom 100% committed to this, like how Nintendo have 100% committed to Mario Kart World.

It's wild because it seems completely the opposite of how Capcom has operated in recent years, and RE's recent run of hits has simply been good survival horror and action horror games.

But if it started in 2017, I can kinda see it as a late remnant of Capcom's bad calls in the PS360 era. I imagine it's nothing like that now.

I fully believe we will never see Jill again in a mainline title as the protagonist. That is quite clear at this point.

If she is in a mainline game, it'll be as a secundary character. And if she is the protagonist, it will be a smaller budget/scope poject, like REmake 3.

Dusk Golem: Resident Evil 9 started as a big open world multiplayer game starring Leon & Jill before rebooting, Revelations 3 cancelled in 2022
nicoreese Member Jan 18, 2018 1,480 Dusk Golem: xcancel.com/AestheticGamer1/status/1925562212602847252 So RE9 originally started development in 2017 (Andi says 2016/2017, but it was in early 2017 after RE7 underperformed at launch to Capcom's expectations. RE7 went on to have a huge tail in sales, but this was a bit reactionary. Click to expand... Click to shrink... Whether it be local or global , what is your most enjoyable experience with a multiplayer game? I love FFXIV and I am really enjoying WoW but my favorite multiplayer experience is probably not something most people would pick... My favorite is Dokapon Journey:

It's between CoD 4 and Destiny/Destiny 2. I think CoD 4 was the first MP game where I was truly addicted. I was so into it I even joined a clan and did some tournaments and I've never done that with any game. Then Destiny/Destiny 2 had its share of highs and lows but it was such a fun experience going along with those games for 10 years. Most of my friends that I still play with online today are from Destiny back in 2014. Some of my favorite gaming memories of all-time came from Destiny.

Half-Life is #1 king for me no other game has come close. the amount of total conversion mods were crazy. Counter Strike, Team Fortress Classic, Day of Defeat, The Specialists, Natural Selection, Vampire Slayers, Firearms, Science & Industry, Sven Co-op, Brainbread, Earth Special Forces. These mods lasted me almost 10 years of daily play.

After that I'd rank the rest of my top 10 as:
    Ultima Online
    Star Wars Galaxies

    Nox
    Starsiege Tribes
    Phantasy Star Online

Every time someone asks how a Starcraft MMO could even work I just constantly shout make it like Planetside. You take the 3 way war of Planetside, you add some base building type stuff like from Natural Selection and you make one of the best games ever made.

  • An indie studio is reviving Defiance (that MMO with the TV show)

A dead MMO that launched with a now-cancelled TV show in 2013 is coming back 4 years after servers were shut down

    Defiance, indeed.
    www.pcgamer.com

Trion Worlds' Defiance was an odd duck.
It launched in 2013 alongside a TV show tie-in with the same name, set on a future Earth following an alien invasion—during which the planet was aggressively terraformed.
Both the game and the show were a mix of grungy post-apocalyptic western and futuristic sci-fi.
Only a couple of years later, the show was cancelled, but the MMO persevered.
And it stuck around for a while, until 2021, when the servers were shut down.
Defiance was never one of the heavy-hitters, and I haven't thought about it for a good long while, but it looks like it's been living in enough folks' heads that it's making a comeback.
Fawkes, "an indie studio and publisher dedicated to reviving treasured titles", has decided that Defiance fits its brief, and has set itself the task of bringing the game back to life.
It acquired the rights to both the original 2013 version of the game and the relaunched Defiance 2050 version that appeared in 2018.
Defiance will make its comeback in April, with Fawkes launching the original 2013 version of the MMO.
Its plan is to work with the community, starting small, with a PC launch, and then growing based on feedback.
The return of the console version might be on the cards, too, but that ultimately depends on its reception on PC.

Not really sure who this is for but ok.
    I'm all for game preservation.
Hopefully they can make an offline version of the game so people can always access it.

    Well.....shit.
From one of the first alphas all the way to server shutdown, I was in this game.
I am more than happy to jump back in, especially if it's back to original launch version.

Played this game at launch and jumped in and out of it through the years.
Interesting to want to start with the 2013 version of the game though.

    Oh damn.
    That'd be awesome.
I got like 1 achievement on Xbox 360 and then forgot about it.
Would be nice to get more time into it.

I was oddly enough just thinking about this game a few weeks back, so weird that it's poped up again.

I watched the tv show and it was good for a nice little sci fi drama, but remember the game being quite mediocre.
Odd that someone would try and bring it back

3rd time lucky? I remember playing it with some friends the first time it came out.
    It was a bit rubbish.
The last time it came out it was still a bit rubbish.
I expect it will a be a bit rubbish the next time it comes out too.

I remember enjoying it, and I liked the show well enough, flawed as it was, but IIRC the game was pretty barebones and the 2050 launch was bad.

Just a re-release, not even adding anything substantial? What's the point then, third time is a charm?

I doubt this is gonna work, but good luck to them nevertheless.

The weirdest stuff is, the TV show Defiance ended up being really great.
After OK s1, it really got much better in following seasons, which culminated in truly awesome ending.

Found it super bland and dropped it quick, even watched a few eps of the show too, good way to hype the IP at the time.

Wild to bring it back tbh hahah.

I remember enjoying this! The public events were fun and the loot was pretty good for this sort of thing.
PvP felt busted and the tie in the TV show felt cheesy despite enjoying the first season of the show at the time.

Loved both the game and show.

The game did a really good job of taking the rift mechanic from the Rift MMO (same dev) and applying it to a shooter.

I played this on PS3, but I don't remember if I bought it, or if they gave it away with PS+.
Edit: It could have been after it went F2P, but au feel like it was at launch with the show.

I was actually really into the 2013 MMO, never played the updated 2050 version.
I even thought the show wasn't half bad.

Maybe I'll give it a try again just for the nostalgia.

Servers were way overloaded and were more often down than up for the first couple weeks.
It's fine now, no issues getting in and playing but I see very little population outside of major Arkfalls.
Major Arkfalls which still have the same old problem of enemies or other players or both just vanishing constantly because the area's overloaded, thus making it impossible to do anything before getting blown up out of nowhere.

Season 1 of the show was pretty decent.
But they never had the budget to really do what they wanted to do.

An indie studio is reviving Defiance (that MMO with the TV show)
Saucycarpdog Member Oct 25, 2017 20,233 A dead MMO that launched with a now-cancelled TV show in 2013 is coming back 4 years after servers were shut down Defiance, indeed. www.pcgamer.com Trion Worlds' Defiance was an odd duck. Click to expand... Click to shrink... Not really sure who this is for but ok. I'm all for game preservation. I remember playing it with some friends the first time it came out. It was a bit rubbish. The last time it came out it was still a bit rubbish. I expect it will a be a bit rubbish the next time it comes out too.   Kalentan Member Oct 25, 2017 50,562 I remember enjoying it, and I liked the show well enough, flawed as it was, but IIRC the game was pretty barebones and the 2050 launch was bad.   noodlesoup Member Feb 21, 2018 3,591 The world events in this game were so cool.   MerluzaSamus Member Dec 3, 2018 1,450 Argentina That game must have done something right.. This is like the third time it launches. Can't deny it has a fanbase.  Timu Member Oct 25, 2017 18,428 I totally forgot there was a TV show as well!   G-X Member Oct 28, 2017 1,565 Wasn't the original game director on this revealed to be highly toxic Edit i think i was incorrectly mixing up this and Firefall  Last edited: Mar 12, 2025 Bucca Member Oct 25, 2017 5,415 Never played the game but I remember binging the show lol   texhnolyze Shinra Employee Member Oct 25, 2017 26,286 Indonesia Just a re-release, not even adding anything substantial? What's the point then, third time is a charm?   TinTuba47 Member Nov 14, 2017 4,318 I remember kinda liking this back in the day   Charpunk Member Oct 25, 2017 12,499 This was actually not terrible but no one I knew played it.   Bansai Teyvat Traveler Member Oct 28, 2017 14,090 I remember fairly liking the show and having 0 interest in the MMO game. I doubt this is gonna work, but good luck to them nevertheless.  SCUMMbag Prophet of Truth - Chicken Chaser Member Oct 25, 2017 7,161 How many times does this game need to come back?   Mario_Bones Member Oct 31, 2017 3,755 Australia Hell yeah, it always bummed me out I didn't finish the story before it went kaput. The world events and PvP were a lot of fun   Vash Member Oct 28, 2017 2,446 I enjoyed it a lot when it came out, so I am definitely going to keep an eye on this.   DieH@rd Member Oct 26, 2017 11,998 The weirdest stuff is, the TV show Defiance ended up being really great. After OK s1, it really got much better in following seasons, which culminated in truly awesome ending.   MadMod Member Dec 4, 2017 4,771 Found it super bland and dropped it quick, even watched a few eps of the show too, good way to hype the IP at the time. Wild to bring it back tbh hahah.  GuitarGuruu Member Oct 26, 2017 7,652 I bought this on PS3, it was a really cool idea at the time but man that gameplay was extremely rough.   DocScroll Member May 25, 2021 706 I remember enjoying this! The public events were fun and the loot was pretty good for this sort of thing. PvP felt busted and the tie in the TV show felt cheesy despite enjoying the first season of the show at the time.   deadfolk Member Oct 25, 2017 6,471 Loved both the game and show. The game did a really good job of taking the rift mechanic from the Rift MMO (same dev) and applying it to a shooter.  LycanXIII The Fallen Oct 26, 2017 11,898 I played this on PS3, but I don't remember if I bought it, or if they gave it away with PS+. Edit: It could have been after it went F2P, but au feel like it was at launch with the show.  texhnolyze Shinra Employee Member Oct 25, 2017 26,286 Indonesia It's live now, by the way. https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=defiance   Primus Member Oct 25, 2017 4,557 It was also laggy as hell when I popped in and went through the tutorial section this morning, so very much a Classic Defiance Experience(tm).   BizzyBum Member Oct 26, 2017 10,403 New York I was actually really into the 2013 MMO, never played the updated 2050 version. I even thought the show wasn't half bad. Maybe I'll give it a try again just for the nostalgia.  Shinobido Heart Member Dec 23, 2017 10,144 This came out already, right?   texhnolyze Shinra Employee Member Oct 25, 2017 26,286 Indonesia Shinobido Heart said: This came out already, right? I never got around to watching any of that lol  Primus Member Oct 25, 2017 4,557 Shinobido Heart said: Damn, what happened? Too many people trying to get in? Click to expand... Click to shrink... Shinobido Heart Member Dec 23, 2017 10,144 Primus said: Servers were way overloaded and were more often down than up for the first couple weeks. I was checking out that Fawkes Games website, looks like they host other old games as well but most of the links don't work.  PLASTICA-MAN Member Oct 26, 2017 29,074 There was a TV series for this?   ReginaldXIV It's Pronounced "Aerith" Member Nov 4, 2017 9,768 Minnesota Season 1 of the show was pretty decent. But they never had the budget to really do what they wanted to do.
