• The European Accessibility Act risks becoming just a box-ticking exercise
    thenextweb.com
With the compliance deadline for the European Accessibility Act (EAA) fast approaching, companies are urgently trying to ensure their websites meet the requirements of the EU directive. One appealing solution is accessibility widgets small add-ons with features like text resizing, contrast adjustments, and text-to-speech functions. However, while these widgets promise fast and inexpensive compliance, they often fail to address the real issues of accessibility. In fact, they can even make websites harder for people with disabilities to navigate.Heres why relying on widgets is a short-sighted solution and what web developers should focus on instead to create truly accessible digital spaces. What does the European Accessibility Act mean for developers? The EAA, enacted in 2019, requires major e-commerce sites and private businesses to comply with a range of accessibility standards by June 28, 2025 (the deadline for public sector institutions has already passed). The rules apply to any companythat conducts business in the EU, except for microenterprises with fewer than 10 employees or under 2mn in annual turnover.Check It OutThese regulations are designed to make websites more accessible to users with disabilities, covering aspects such as text alternatives for images, keyboard navigation, and screen reader compatibility. While the EAA primarily impacts large enterprises, it has also raised general awareness of accessibility, encouraging smaller businesses to review the accessibility of their sites. As the deadline nears, the pressure to comply with the EAA has led some companies to pursue quick solutions. Accessibility widgets appear to offer an easy way to check the boxes.Unfortunately, these tools often lead companies down the wrong path, creating a false sense of security and missing the opportunity to fix the underlying accessibility issues of their sites. Why widgets are seen as a suitable solutionThis is not to say that accessibility widgets are bad by default. Their appeal is easy to understand. They are low-cost, fast to implement, and, in many cases, do address common accessibility needs, such as the options to adjust font sizes and contrast settings. As a result, these tools can often be enough for websites that feature relatively few elements, dont handle high traffic volumes, or dont require visitors to perform important actions entering your bank account information, for example. For such websites, widgets can provide a layer of accessibility without requiring significant overhauls to existing design and code. For some businesses, especially those with limited resources, the promise of a widget is hard to resist. Adding a widget to your site will be considerably less expensive than ongoing testing, fixing, and maintenance processes. However, the reliance on widgets can not only delay fixing underlying issues with the site but can even lead to additional accessibility issues caused by the widgets themselves.Widgets can cause more issues than they solveA significant issue with widgets is that they tend to operate as overlays they function as layers on top of the original website content rather than making structural improvements to the code. This layering can interfere with existing site functionality, causing problems with navigation, interactive features, or screen readers, which many users with disabilities rely on.For example, my team at TestDevLab looked at the major fashion retailer Zara, which uses accessibility widgets on its website. We identified several issues caused by these tools. To name a few:Site visitors who only use their keyboard for navigation cannot move to all elements after tapping the Login button because the focus jumps to the accessibility widget shortcut links. If you select the dark, high-contrast option in the accessibility widget, the hamburger menu button and page logo are no longer visible.A number of issues were detected with text adjustment and visibility when increasing the font size through the widget.Because widgets typically only address surface-level issues, they fail to engage with underlying accessibility requirements like keyboard navigation and properly labelled images. Instead of solving these deeper problems, widgets often become long-term crutches that prevent real progress, allowing companies to overlook the foundational changes needed for meaningful accessibility.Whether a widget works is often determined by how the original site has been built and structured. If there are issues in the sites HTML code, layering a widget on top of that may not make a difference in terms of accessibility or, even worse, break other elements that make the site more challenging to navigate than it is without the widget. Other factors affecting widget performance include each site visitors browser and operating system. While the widget may work for some, it may fail for others.Building accessibility from the ground upTrue web accessibility requires investing in long-term, site-wide improvements rather than superficial fixes. Developers should consider accessibility a core part of the design and development process, not an afterthought. This means building accessibility into every stage of a websites lifecycle, from design to testing.Elements like keyboard navigation, text alternatives, logical heading structures, and responsive design should be considered from the start, making the website accessible at its foundation rather than through add-ons.Testing is essential in this process. Accessibility is a continuous effort it requires periodic audits and adjustments to ensure ongoing compliance as technology and accessibility standards evolve. • System Shock 2's 25th Anniversary Remaster Infects Switch This June
    www.nintendolife.com
I'm with the user above (and the author!) in that I hope the OG System Shock remake (or remaster!) comes to the Switch at some point. I played the remake on an original model Xbox One a few months back, and honestly see no reason why the current Switch couldn't handle it. It's all a matter of who handles the port, if it happens at all.Though I do think it would need a control overhaul. Having to drag a virtual cursor across the screen with the Xbox gamepad was no fun at all! I hope that SS2's gamepad support is a bit better thought-out, and more console-friendly.I will gladly get SS2 on Switch, though I will wait for a retail release. Atari / Nightdive has been pretty good lately about providing hard copies of their games on their website and at major retail outlets. Whether or not it'll get a deluxe treatment with some extra "feelies" remains to be seen, but I am keen to wait it out and see what they come up with

The Trump administration asked them to comment on a new AI policy, having overturned the weak one Biden had put in place by executive order. Tech companies say training AI models on copyrighted content constitutes fair use, arguing that restrictive laws would hand China an insurmountable advantage. OpenAI, Meta, and Google have all cited the rapid rise of DeepSeek, a Chinese open-source AI model, to justify their position. If the PRCs developers have unfettered access to data and American companies are left without fair use access, the race for AI is effectively over, OpenAI wrote in its submission to the White House. Critics, including Hollywood unions and over 400 high-profile creators, argue that this would allow AI firms to profit from unlicensed material without compensating those who created it. Big tech wants nothing less than a preemptive pardon for copyright infringement. With the administrations open contempt for the media, in particular the NY Times (who is suing Open AI), the influence of Elon Musk, who owns Xai, and Trumps personal vendetta against Hollywood, its not hard to predict how this movie is going to end.Roblox generates 3D objects from 2D pictures. • Man who looked himself up on ChatGPT was told he killed his children
    www.digitaltrends.com
Imagine putting your name into ChatGPT to see what it knows about you, only for it to confidently yet wrongly claim that you had been jailed for 21 years for murdering members of your family.Well, thats exactly what happened to Norwegian Arve Hjalmar Holmen last year after he looked himself up on ChatGPT, OpenAIs widely used AI-powered chatbot.Recommended VideosNot surprisingly, Holmen has now filed a complaint with the Norwegian Data Protection Authority, demanding that OpenAI be fined for its distressing claim, the BBC reported this week. In the response to Holmens ChatGPT inquiry about himself, the chatbot said he had gained attention due to a tragic event. It went on: He was the father of two young boys, aged 7 and 10, who were tragically found dead in a pond near their home in Trondheim, Norway, in December 2020. Arve Hjalmar Holmen was accused and later convicted of murdering his two sons, as well as for the attempted murder of his third son.The chatbot said the case shocked the local community and the nation, and it was widely covered in the media due to its tragic nature. But nothing of the sort happened.Understandably upset by the incident, Holmen told the BBC: Some think that there is no smoke without fire the fact that someone could read this output and believe it is true is what scares me the most.Digital rights group Noyb has filed the complaint on Holmens behalf, stating that ChatGPTs response is defamatory and contravenes European data protection rules regarding accuracy of personal data. In its complaint, Noyb said that Holmen has never been accused nor convicted of any crime and is a conscientious citizen.ChatGPT uses a disclaimer saying that the chatbot can make mistakes, and so users should check important info. But Noyb lawyer Joakim Sderberg said: You cant just spread false information and in the end add a small disclaimer saying that everything you said may just not be true. While its not uncommon for AI chatbots to spit out erroneous information such mistakes are known as hallucinations the egregiousness of this particular error is shocking.Another hallucination that hit the headlines last year involved Googles AI Gemini tool, which suggested sticking cheese to pizza using glue. It also claimed that geologists had recommended that humans eat one rock per day.The BBC points out that ChatGPT has updated its model since Holmens search last August, which means that it now trawls through recent news articles when creating its response. But that doesnt mean that ChatGPT is now creating error-free answers. The story highlights the need to check responses generated by AI chatbots, and not to trust their answers blindly. It also raises questions about the safety of text-based generative- AI tools, which have operated with little regulatory oversight since OpenAI opened up the sector with the launch of ChatGPT in late 2022.Digital Trends has contacted OpenAI for a response to Holmens unfortunate experience and we will update this story when we hear back.Editors Recommendations

  • Cybertrucks faulty trim prompts biggest recall yet, stokes Tesla investor panic
    arstechnica.com
Tesla's "brand tornado crisis moment" Cybertrucks faulty trim prompts biggest recall yet, stokes Tesla investor panic Recall forces Tesla to reveal just how many Cybertrucks were sold. Ashley Belanger Mar 20, 2025 2:46 pm | 99 Credit: MANDEL NGAN / Contributor | AFP Credit: MANDEL NGAN / Contributor | AFP Story textSizeSmallStandardLargeWidth *StandardWideLinksStandardOrange* Subscribers only Learn moreEvery Tesla Cybertruck ever sold is being recalled so Tesla can fix an exterior panel that could potentially come unglued and detach while driving. If the "panel separates from the vehicle while in drive, it could create a road hazard for following motorists and increase their risk of injury or a collision," Tesla explained in a safety recall report submitted Tuesday to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).Tesla initially became aware of the issue in January and launched a study of the problem as more complaints came in, the report said. By March, social media complaints were getting louder as Tesla wrapped up its probe, concluding that a voluntary recall was necessary. The recall affects any 2024 or 2025 Cybertruck manufactured between November 13, 2023, to February 27, 2025, the report said. According to Reuters, this represents "a vast majority of the Cybertruck vehicles on the road, based on analyst estimates." Potentially more than 46,000 vehicles could require the fix, Tesla said, while conservatively estimating that only 1 percent of cars are likely defective.Cybertruck drivers unsure if their vehicle needs the fix can look out for warning signs, like "a detectable noise inside the cabin" or visible signs the panel is detaching, Tesla said.Anyone whose car is covered by the recall can get the fix at no charge, Tesla said. The repair both replaces the adhesive used for the panel with one that's more durable and reinforces the attachment "with a stud welded to the stainless panel with a nut clamping the steel panel to the vehicle structure," Tesla said.Starting tomorrow, all new Cybertrucks that Tesla produces will have this fix, Tesla said, while any vehicles that Tesla currently possesses will be retrofitted before delivery to any customers.Tesla is currently notifying dealers about the recall, then plans to start reaching out to customers with recall notices on May 19. Any Cybertruck owners interested in pursuing repairs now can call NHTSA's Vehicle Safety Hotline at 888-327-4236 (TTY 888-275-9171) or go to nhtsa.gov, the agency said.Investors panicked by Teslas brand tornado crisis momentLast year, Tesla had several rounds of recalls, notifying drivers of widely varied problems, from software issues to faulty accelerator pedals or inverters. As recalls have been announced, Cybertruck sales have seemingly slumped, as Tesla obscured the true figures by lumping numbers in with sales of Model X and Model S, MotorTrend reported. This new recall is the first glimpse industry analysts have had of total Cybertruck sales, MotorTrend noted, and compared to other popular trucks, Cybertruck sales overall appear remarkably stunted.Critics have attributed some of Tesla's financial woes to CEO Elon Musk joining the Trump administration as a senior advisor and running the controversial Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).Protesters nationwide have overrun Tesla showrooms, some causing damage. At least one admitted vandal with no prior criminal record was recently banned from Tesla properties, while Attorney General Pam Bondi on Thursday threatened up to 20 years in prison to three accused vandals in Colorado, Oregon, and South Carolina, who allegedly threw "Molotov cocktails to set fire to Tesla cars and charging stations."Several top-ranking officials have condemned the protests. Donald Trump went so far as buying a Tesla in a show of loyalty to Musk, but that effortas well as the Commerce secretary going on TV to beg people to buy Teslasdoesn't seem to be moving the needle much on Tesla sales.Tesla stocks fell after the Commerce secretary's call, The Guardian reported, while a website doxxing Tesla owners seemingly threatened even more vandalism while intimidating owners into selling their cars, just as used Tesla prices tumbled. In a note to investors, one of Tesla's biggest supporters, Dan Ives, wrote that Tesla was suffering a "brand tornado crisis moment" and pushed for Musk to turn his attention away from DOGE and back to Tesla, The Guardian reported."Tesla and Musk are facing a defining chapter in their future, and how Musk handles this next few months will be pivotal to the long term growth trajectory of Tesla in our view," Ives wrote. "Tesla is Musk and Musk is Tesla they are synonymous and attached together and cannot be separated."Another Tesla investor, Ross Gerber, joined Ives' plea yesterday. He called on Musk to make more time in his busy schedule to steer Tesla back on the right course, Newsweek reported."Elon chooses to work all the time, but you could only work so many hours a day, so it's 24," Gerber said. "So, there's no question he's been committed to his job at the government, and that's where he's spending his time. He's not running Tesla."Ashley BelangerSenior Policy ReporterAshley BelangerSenior Policy Reporter Ashley is a senior policy reporter for Ars Technica, dedicated to tracking social impacts of emerging policies and new technologies. Former first lady Michelle Obama is doubling down on her decision to not run for president. She said it would be "unthinkable" to put her daughters, Malia and Sasha, back in the spotlight again."They've already served their time," Obama said on a podcast.Stop asking Michelle Obama if she'll ever run for president she's not interested.During an appearance on Thursday's episode of the "Not Gonna Lie with Kylie Kelce" podcast, the former first lady made it very clear that she has no intention of running for office. And it's mostly because of her two daughters, Malia and Sasha."The day-to-day kind of challenges that any parent has with teenagers, we had it on 100," Obama told podcast host Kylie Kelce. "I was so glad when we got out of the White House. I wanted them to have the freedom of not having the eyes of the world on them."When they first moved into the White House, her daughters were 8 and 10 years old. They spent the bulk of their teenage years in the public eye."When we entered, I'm thinking, how do I make sure that they're normal and ready when this is all over, right? They have to get on a bus, make their own plane reservations, and live in an apartment, and have decent friends, and be sane in the world," Obama said. She said she tried her best to ensure a sense of normality in her daughters' lives, despite their unusual circumstances. As much as she wanted to prepare her daughters for a world outside the White House, Obama was also worried that they would become tabloid fodder by letting them live like normal teens."You start realizing that in the teen years because I wanted to give my girls enough rope to live and be normal teenagers, but I also worry about them turning up on Page Six because they were doing what normal kids would do without that many eyes on them," Obama said. These experiences contributed to her decision not to run for president."So when people ask me would I ever run? The answer is no," Obama said. "If you ask me that, then you have absolutely no idea the sacrifice that your kids make when your parents are in that role."Not only is she not interested in politics "in that way," the thought of putting her daughters back into the spotlight when they are just now establishing themselves in their own lives and careers would be "unthinkable," she said."Question asked and answered never going to happen," Obama said. "They've already served their time."This isn't the first time that Obama has been open about her desire not to run for president; her comments about not wanting to seek office date back to 2012.A representative for Obama did not immediately respond to a request for comment sent by Business Insider outside regular hours.
