Reid Hoffman said the US risks alienating its allies, which could negatively impact American businesses. The LinkedIn cofounder said on a recent podcast that he wants to prove the country can still be a "stable partner."He added that collaboration among democratic countries is important to global cohesion.Reid Hoffman thinks the US is in danger of alienating its allies which he says could lead to consequences for American tech companies."One of the problems with the current general administration approach of 'how to lose friends and alienate people' the opposite of Dale Carnegie is that that will create substantial problems for all American industry, including the tech industry," the billionaire cofounder of LinkedIn and partner at VC firm Greylock said on an episode of the podcast Possible. In the first months since Trump's return to the White House, his administration announced steep tariffs on neighboring Canada and Mexico, as well as sweeping duties on Chinese products and increased friction with longtime European allies."I mean, obviously most of the actions, and most of the gestures, tend to be the when you come over to Europe and say, it's an America, not just America first, it's an America-only kind of position, that obviously breaks alliances," Hoffman said. "And gets people to think about like, 'Well, who else should I potentially ally with?'"Hoffman said he"And so having all these discussions with people about like, OK, what kind of technologists here say, 'Well, I'd rather buy a BYD car than a Tesla,'" Hoffman said. "One is kind of saying, 'Hey, I'm just trying to be a stable partner,' and the other one's saying, 'You're my enemy.'"Despite rising tensions, Hoffman said he wants to convince people that the US businesses are still smart investments and that the country itself can be reliable."Part of what I'm trying to do here is persuade folks that the US actually, in fact, can be a continuing stable partner, despite randomness of tariffs and things," Hoffman said. Not all Americans in tech follow the same lines of thinking, he added."The business of America being business is still actually, in fact, something that we hold a bunch of us Americans hold dear," Hoffman said. "And try to operate and try to say, 'Hey, there's still bridges we can build here.'"The more that countries on the world stage can collaborate to create more democratic "centers of innovation," Hoffman said, the better off global society will be."It's part of what creates the multilateral system that makes a much healthier, stable global society," Hoffman said.Hoffman was a big supporter of Kamala Harris' presidential campaign in 2024 and has previously said he expected Trump to retaliate against business leaders who refused to back him."I think that there's a greater than 50% chance that there will be repercussions from a misdirection and corruption of the institutions of state to respond to my having tried to help Harris get elected," Hoffman said on a December episode of the "Diary of a CEO" podcast. After Trump's victory, Hoffman also wrote a post on X in November saying he hoped the president wouldn't "corruptly play favorites in business or foreign policy," and that he'd refrain from enacting a "crippling, 19th-century tariff regime.""What matters today is the same as what mattered last week. How do we come together to build a better future for the broad society of Americans?" Hoffman said.

  • NYU Website Hacked to Display Racist Garbage
    gizmodo.com
By AJ Dellinger Published March 22, 2025 | Comments (0) | NYU flags hang outside university building Beata Zawrzel/NurPhoto via Getty Images Higher education is already under assault by the Trump administration, but New York University got hit by a slightly different kind of attack. The universitys website fell victim to an apparent hack on Saturday morning, which resulted in the homepage being defaced for several hours and used to display racial slurs and graphs that purported to show test scores of students broken down by race. The hack was apparently carried out by a person who identifies themselves on X as a racial slura thing that it just allowed on that platform now, by the waywith the handle (censored here) @bestn*ggy. The hacker hijacked the universitys homepage and displayed the message, On June 29 2023, racial affirmative action in college admissions was ruled illegal. Computer N*ggy Exploitation (CNE) reveals NYU continued anyway. That message was followed by a graph purporting to show the average SAT scores, ACT scores, and grade point average of NYU applicants who were admitted into the university, broken down by race. The hacker also published links to mirrors of the supposed data they gained access to in order to display the scores, identified by the hacker as raw data with personally identifiable information redacted. On X, the hacker claimed that the data was literally just raw data from NYUs own data warehouse and that they only posted (redacted) bare minimum to prove theyre breaking the law. The hacker also claimed responsibility for a breach of the University of Minnesota back in 2023 that reportedly exposed millions of social security numbers. The apparent claim being put forth by the hacker and their racist edgelord persona is that NYU is admitting college students based in some way on race. The theory being that some students would not be admitted if they were being judged based solely on their test scores and GPA. That has been picked up by the worst accounts you know on X, who have run with the data to suggest NYU has been giving preference to students based on race.Of course, the data doesnt prove that at all. NYU is a test-optional school, so the people who submit test results in the first place are self-selectingtheyre going to submit a score if they think it might help them. Likewise, the scores cant account for the wealth disparity that plagues standardized testing, as the children of wealthy people significantly outperform students from lower-income households, in no small part due to the resources available to them. (Thats kinda the whole idea with diversity, equity, and inclusion programs that people like this hacker seem so offended bythere are extremely capable people from all backgrounds who often simply do not have the same opportunities as others and end up overlooked.)Anyway, NYU posts its own data on incoming classes, and it indicated that it saw a decline in historically underrepresented minority groups for the class of 2028 following the Supreme Courts decision to end affirmative action within college admissions. All of that to say, the hacker and the people who have picked up on his data are ardent lovers of the rule of law. Theyre mostly just racists who want to punish universities, possibly galvanized by the Trump administrations own crackdown on higher education institutions.Daily NewsletterYou May Also Like By Matt Novak Published March 6, 2025 By Todd Feathers Published November 11, 2024 By Matt Novak Published November 8, 2024 By Andrew Liszewski Published January 30, 2023 By Brianna Provenzano Published September 22, 2021 By Shoshana Wodinsky Published August 16, 2021

  • Netflixs Live-Action One Piece Loses Its Co-Showrunner
    gizmodo.com
Matt Owens, co-showrunner and executive producer for seasons one and two of Netflixs One Piece, has revealed hes stepping away from the show. On Instagram, Owens explained the last six years working on the live-action One Piecehave been a life-changing journey, and a dream come true. Its also been a LOT. So Im stepping off the Going Merry to take a break and focus on myself and my mental health. Thank you so much to [creator Eiichiro] Oda, Shueisha, Tomorrow Studios, Netflix, and the entire cast and crew for your trust, partnership, and hard work. As Deadline notes, One Pieces first season was co-showrun by Steven Maeda and Owens. While Maeda remains an executive producer, he departed his showrunning post after season one. Joe Tracz became the new co-showrunner and as well as an EP in April 2024. Tracz is remaining with the series and will guide season twos post-production. The trade notes that One Piece wrapped production on season two last month. Owens exit will reportedly not affect the shows chances of being renewed for a third season, and hes co-written at least one episode for season two. And his influence will seemingly still be felt moving forward; during his time on One Piece, he helped shape the creative vision for the series, Deadline writes, including its long-term blueprint for future seasons.Earlier in March,One Piecesfirst season won two Emmys for stunt coordination and best song in a kids/YA program (My Sails Are Set). Last year, Netflix announced several actors for key season two roles, including Lera Abova as Nico Robin and Joe Manganiello as Mr. 0. The season currently doesnt have a release window. G House is a minimalist, ecologically sustainable residence designed to coexist with its natural surroundings in the Gkeovack region of Mula, Turkey. Positioned on a rocky slope overlooking Gcek Island, the house offers a seamless connection to nature while maintaining a low-impact footprint. The initial site visit took place on a rainy January day, setting the tone for the project's deep engagement with the landscape. The terrain, shaped by thousands of years of rainwater erosion, consists of limestone rock formations, olive trees, and a dense natural cover. The project sought to respect and preserve this unique ecosystem while designing a functional, comfortable, and aesthetically refined living space.Save this picture!G House is a single-story, 75 m steel-frame building with an additional 50 m terrace. The house follows a rectangular layout parallel to the valley's slope, with its narrow facade angled to optimize sea views. Designed with minimal intervention in nature, the house is supported by individual foundation pieces without extensive excavation or retaining walls. No artificial landscaping was introduced, and the vegetation remains undisturbed.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture!G House operates with a self-sufficient infrastructure. Water is collected in a dedicated tank, and energy needs are met through solar panels. Despite its full-glass facade, the building's design and orientation have minimized the need for air conditioning. The architecture emphasizes a seamless indoor-outdoor experience, reinforcing the idea of being in nature rather than simply observing it.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture!Internally, the house follows an open-plan scheme, maximizing its compact footprint. The layout consists of a living area, kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, and storage niches. Circulation spaces double as functional areas, incorporating built-in storage and washbasin niches. Instead of conventional partitions or doors, the house maintains visual continuity throughout. A kitchen island and fireplace subtly define a spatial organization. Surrounding eaves and terraces further enhance the relationship between indoor and outdoor spaces.Save this picture!A key challenge of the project was balancing budget constraints with high-quality architecture. Constructing in a rugged, sloped terrain required innovative solutions and close collaboration between architects, engineers, and builders. From the earliest stages, design decisions were made in consultation with the construction team to ensure feasibility. The process emphasized efficiency, material selection, and experience-driven architecture.Save this picture!G House represents a contemporary approach to rural living, where environmental, technological, and economic factors converge. As global interest in sustainable lifestyles grows, rural migration is becoming an increasingly viable choice. Advances in off-grid living solutions, organic farming, and permaculture are making self-sufficient rural homes more attractive. In this context, G House embodies a model of modern, sustainable, and aesthetically refined countryside living.Save this picture!Beyond its physical presence, G House is an architectural statement about the relationship between human habitation and nature. By employing recyclable materials, a minimalist footprint, and a design philosophy that prioritizes experience over dominance, the house offers a temporary yet meaningful existence in its environment. It serves as a retreat that both protects from and embraces naturean architectural paradox that ultimately defines its essence.Save this picture!Project gallerySee allShow lessAbout this officePIN ArchitectsOfficePublished on March 22, 2025Cite: "G House / PIN Architects" 22 Mar 2025.
