The Sims Competitor inZOI Sells 1 Million in a Week, Krafton Declares It a Long-Term Franchise IP
inZOI has sold 1 million copies in a week, developer and publisher Krafton has announced. Thats the fastest sales milestone ever for a game published by the South Korean megacorp.Kraftons The Sims competitor launched on PC via Steam in Early Access form on March 28 and quickly hit the headlines after players discovered they could run over and kill children. Krafton responded to say it had patched out what it called an "unintended bug."Despite this hiccup, inZOI has a very positive user review rating on Steam, and saw a peak of 175,000 concurrent viewers on Twitch, ranking third in the Games category. It rose to number one on Steams Global Top Sellers List (by sales revenue) just 40 minutes after release.Meanwhile, Canvas, inZOIs in-game user-generated content (UGC) sharing platform, saw over 1.2 million participants on launch day, and over 470,000 pieces of content uploaded.PlayIGNs inZOI Early Access review returned a 6/10. We said: inZOI is a visually striking life simulator with plenty of ambition, but not enough depth as of its Early Access launch.Clearly, inZOI is doing the business for Krafton, which highlighted its work promoting the game ahead of launch and its communication with the community as helping to build trust and momentum for release. The inZOI global showcase and demo build particularly attracted high interest, Krafton added.CEO CH Kim commented: We are grateful and excited to present inZOI to players around the world through Early Access. We will continue to actively communicate with players and foster inZOI as Kraftons long-term franchise IP.inZOI's Best and Most Cursed CreationsAs for whats next, Krafton said future updates will introduce new content, including mod support and new cities, with all updates and DLC provided for free until full release. In a recent note to players, Krafton said it will quickly apply fixes for reported issues through hotfixes during April amid complaints from some players about the state of the game. The scale of inZOIs global community is a next-level experience for us, Krafton said, before admitting its going through some trial and error in finding the optimal means of communication.Wesley is the UK News Editor for IGN. Solar panels made from moon dust could power future lunar colonies
Future lunar bases could run on solar panels forged from molten moon dust, turning the Moons surface into an energy source, thanks to a new research breakthrough.Scientists at the University of Potsdam have engineered so-called moonglass solar cells made by melting artificial moon dust or regolith and then combining it with a layer of perovskite crystal to create a working solar panel. The device could be lighter, cheaper, and more radiation-resistant than the panels already used in space, said the researchers. Their results were published in the journal Device this week.Today, solar panels power satellites, space stations, and Mars and lunar rovers. All these arrays are currently built on Earth and launched into space. But as humanity pushes for a permanent lunar presence, the need for solar power is set to skyrocket and so will the cost of getting panels there.Get TicketsFelix Lang, lead author of the paper, said that while the silicon-based solar cells used in space now are amazing reaching efficiencies of 30% to 40% they are very expensive. They are also heavy because they use glass or a thick foil as a cover. Its hard to justify lifting all these cells into space, he said.Harnessing the Moons own regolith could be a game-changer. By creating moonglass directly on the lunar surface and pairing it with a thin layer of perovskite crystals brought from Earth, the researchers found they could slash launch mass by 99%.Building solar panels on the MoonAn artists impression of future solar cell fabrication on the Moon. Credit: Sercan zenOnce the materials are collected, turning them into solar panels on the Moon would require minimal equipment, according to the researchers, because they can be made with raw regolith that doesnt need to be pre-processed. The team saysthey have already achieved promising results by using a large curved mirror and sunlight to focus a beam hot enough to melt regolith into moonglass.Since moonglass is made from raw regolith, its milky-white instead of transparent, limiting its light-harvesting potential. The best prototypes from the Potsdam team reached about 12% efficiency roughly half that of conventional perovskite cells. But simulations suggest they could eventually match the efficiency of conventional perovskite cells.Nicholas Bennett at the University of Technology Sydney told New Scientist that this is the first successful use of moonglass in a functioning solar cell. The real challenge now, he says, is producing large quantities of the stuff outside of the lab.Moonglass panels are the latest in a string of high-tech bids to lay the foundations for a permanent human presence on the Moon. Other planned projects include using moon dust to 3D-print a lunar base, building oxygen extraction systems from regolith, and even building space mirrors that melt the Moons ice into drinking water.Space age technologies will be appearing on Earth duringTNW Conference, which takes place on June 19-20 in Amsterdam. Adding transit cards direct from the Wallet app is a travelers delight
I said a few years ago that Express Transit is a tiny feature that makes a huge difference, and planning a last-minute trip revealed the same is true of another Wallet feature. The ability to add foreign transit cards direct to the Wallet app before you even leave home is a travelers delight A growing number of cities around the world have adopted prepaid cards as their standard way for locals and visitors alike to pay for their public transit journeys.Examples include OMNY in New York, Oyster in London, Suica in Tokyo, SUBE in Buenos Aires, Opal in Sydney, Octopus in Hong Kong, and many more. (Though ironically, London now discourages the use of an Oyster card in favor of contactless payment cards.)Most of them work in a similar way. You can have either a physical card or a digital one, and in either case can use an app to load cash onto it. You then tap the card or your iPhone or Apple Watch onto contactless pads when you travel, with the fare deducted from the balance. In some cases, these are the only way to pay for travel meaning that a visitor to the city has to obtain one before they can begin traveling around the city and in other cases you pay a lower fare when using the card versus a conventional ticket. In some cities, obtaining one of these cards can be challenging. In Buenos Aires, for example, you can theoretically buy a SUBE card from any corner kiosk. In practice, they are often completely unavailable from anywhere other than main train stations, and even then availability can be intermittent. I had quite the adventure to obtain mine during my first visit, and for my first couple of days ended up offering a local cash to use their card to board a bus.But many cities allow you to download the app, obtain a card, and load cash onto it before you arrive. This is far more convenient, and means youre all set to take a train from the airport. However, Apples Wallet app goes one better than this. Open the app, tap the + button top-right, tap Travel Card and then just search for the city youll be visiting. Adding the card and loading it with some money can be done in just a few more taps, and in around a minute you have a local transit card ready for use on arrival.Thats exactly what I did for a last-minute trip to Toronto, Canada. Searched for the city, found the Presto card, added it, loaded some cash, and was all set. No registration, no third-party app, just simple, instant access.Given how bureaucratic travel can be these days having to scan passports to check in for an international flight, obtain a visa or visa waiver, download an app for expedited immigration clearance and so on this feature is a refreshing delight.9to5Mac collage of screengrab and background byChuttersnaponUnsplashAdd 9to5Mac to your Google News feed. Another Young Bodybuilder Just Suddenly Died
Image by Vittorio Pirbazari via InstagramAt just 44 years old, actor and weightlifting influencer Vittorio Pirbazari has died the second young bodybuilder to pass away suddenly in a single month.According toPeople magazine, Pirbazari's death was confirmed in an Instagram video posted by his friend Said Ibraham, a German-language true crime YouTuber with whom the bodybuilder had worked in the past.In the video, Ibraham lamented in German the death of his "bruderherz" or "dear brother" and said, per People's translation, that he was thrown "completely off track" upon learning that Pirbazari had passed away.Though no official cause of death has been reported, Ibraham suggested that the 44-year-old strongman had a heart attack when he was in the gym. A similar fate befell 20-year-old Jodi Vance, a weightlifting coach who died of dehydration-induced cardiac arrest in March after allegedly taking an unspecified supplement.Pirbazari's untimely demise came just a few months after suffering a torn chest muscle that resulted in a surgical reattachment. During his recovery, the weightlifting actor was unable to exercise and just days before his death, he made another post about his slow return to the gym."I'm happy to be back in the gym at all and am focusing entirely on leg training and cardio," Pirbazari wrote, per IG's auto-translation. "I'm trying intervals on the treadmill right now, but since my legs aren't 100 percent healed yet, I'm taking it slowly."Given that he had been out of the gym for three months, it's quite possible that the German muscle man's heart was no longer able to handle his workouts especially if he pushed himself too hard.Do you know anything about unsafe practices in the world of bodybuilding? Send us an email at tips@futurism.com. We can keep you anonymous. As with other young bodybuilder deaths, there's also a non-zero chance that any supplements Pirbazari was taking could have contributed to his passing. One thing's for sure: thereare toxic forces at work in the world of bodybuilding and unfortunately, it's claimed another life.More on muscle: Scientists Suggest Electrocuting Yourself at the Gym to Get JackedShare This Article

SpotBugs Access Token Theft Identified as Root Cause of GitHub Supply Chain Attack
Apr 04, 2025Ravie LakshmananVulnerability / Open Source,The cascading supply chain attack that initially targeted Coinbase before becoming more widespread to single out users of the "tj-actions/changed-files" GitHub Action has been traced further back to the theft of a personal access token (PAT) related to SpotBugs."The attackers obtained initial access by taking advantage of the GitHub Actions workflow of SpotBugs, a popular open-source tool for static analysis of bugs in code," Palo Alto Networks Unit 42 said in an update this week. "This enabled the attackers to move laterally between SpotBugs repositories, until obtaining access to reviewdog."There is evidence to suggest that the malicious activity began as far back as November, 2024, although the attack against Coinbase did not take place until March 2025.Unit 42 said its investigation began with the knowledge that reviewdog's GitHub Action was compromised due to a leaked PAT associated with the project's maintainer, which subsequently enabled the threat actors to push a rogue version of "reviewdog/action-setup" that, in turn, was picked up by "tj-actions/changed-files" due to it being listed as a dependency via the "tj-actions/eslint-changed-files" action. It has since been uncovered that the maintainer was also an active participant in another open-source project called SpotBugs. The attackers are said to have pushed a malicious GitHub Actions workflow file to the "spotbugs/spotbugs" repository under the disposable username "jurkaofavak," causing the maintainer's PAT to be leaked when the workflow was executed. It's believed that the same PAT facilitated access to both "spotbugs/spotbugs" and "reviewdog/action-setup," meaning the leaked PAT could be abused to poison "reviewdog/action-setup.""The attacker somehow had an account with write permission in spotbugs/spotbugs, which they were able to use to push a branch to the repository and access the CI secrets," Unit 42 said.As for how the write permissions were obtained, it has come to light that the user behind the malicious commit to SpotBugs, "jurkaofavak," was invited to the repository as a member by one of the project maintainers themselves on March 11, 2025.In other words, the attackers managed to obtain the PAT of the SpotBugs repository to invite "jurkaofavak" to become a member. This, the cybersecurity company said, was carried out by creating a fork of the "spotbugs/sonar-findbugs" repository and creating a pull request under the username "randolzfow.""On 2024-11-28T09:45:13 UTC, [the SpotBugs maintainer] modified one of the 'spotbugs/sonar-findbugs workflows to use their own PAT, as they were having technical difficulties in a part of their CI/CD process," Unit 42 explained."On 2024-12-06 02:39:00 UTC, the attacker submitted a malicious pull request to spotbugs/sonar-findbugs, which exploited a GitHub Actions workflow that used the pull_request_target trigger."The "pull_request_target" trigger is a GitHub Actions workflow trigger that allows workflows running from forks to access secrets in this case, the PAT leading to what's called a poisoned pipeline execution attack (PPE).The SpotBugs maintainer has since confirmed that the PAT that was used as a secret in the workflow was the same access token that was later used to invite "jurkaofavak" to the "spotbugs/spotbugs" repository. The maintainer has also rotated all of their tokens and PATs to revoke and prevent further access by the attackers. One major unknown in all this is the three-month gap between when the attackers leaked the SpotBugs maintainer's PAT and when they abused it. It's suspected that the attackers were keeping an eye out on the projects that were dependent on "tj-actions/changed-files" and waited to strike a high-value target like Coinbase."Having invested months of effort and after achieving so much, why did the attackers print the secrets to logs, and in doing so, also reveal their attack?," Unit 42 researchers pondered.Found this article interesting? Trumps tariffs will deliver a big blow to climate tech US president Donald Trumps massive, sweeping tariffs sent global stock markets tumbling yesterday, setting the stage for a worldwide trade war and ratcheting up the dangers of a punishing recession. Experts fear that the US cleantech sector is especially vulnerable to a deep downturn, which would undermine progress on reducing greenhouse-gas emissions. Read the full story.James TempleCyberattacks by AI agents are coming Agents are the talk of the AI industrytheyre capable of planning, reasoning, and executing complex tasks like scheduling meetings, ordering groceries, or even taking over your computer to change settings on your behalf. But the same sophisticated abilities that make agents helpful assistants could also make them powerful tools for conducting cyberattacks. They could readily be used to identify vulnerable targets, hijack their systems, and steal valuable data from unsuspecting victims. At present, cybercriminals are not deploying AI agents to hack at scale. But researchers have demonstrated that agents are capable of executing complex attacks, and cybersecurity experts warn that we should expect to start seeing these types of attacks spilling over into the real worldand soon. The big story The weeds are winning October 2024 Since the 1980s, more and more plants have evolved to become immune to the biochemical mechanisms that herbicides leverage to kill them. This herbicidal resistance threatens to decrease yieldsout-of-control weeds can reduce them by 50% or more, and extreme cases can wipe out whole fields. At worst, it can even drive farmers out of business. Its the agricultural equivalent of antibiotic resistance, and it keeps getting worse. Weeds have evolved resistance to 168 different herbicides and 21 of the 31 known modes of action, which means the specific biochemical target or pathway a chemical is designed to disrupt. Agriculture needs to embrace a diversity of weed control practices. But thats much easier said than done. Read the full story. Trump tariffs could make investors pause funding for major schemes, experts warn
But construction prices could also ease as overseas exporters dump products in the UK to avoid US barriersDonald Trump announcing a raft of new tariffs on WednesdayUK construction experts have given a mixed reaction to Donald Trumpsliberation day tariffs, with some warning investors might pause funding for big schemes and others suggesting it could lead to lower material prices. The US president announced a raft of worldwide tariffs on Wednesday, including a baseline 10% tax on all imports into the country which will come into effect tomorrow (Saturday) in what economists have described as a watershed moment in global trade. The UK is the least affected developed country with only the baseline tariff imposed on it, although other countries are facing much more severe reciprocal rates including China, at 54%, Japan at 24% and the EU at 20%.While the UKs lower rate means it could become an attractive location for overseas businesses to import into the US, industry experts warn short and medium-term uncertainty could stall many investment decisions including on major projects.Arcadis head of strategic research and insight Simion Rawlinson described the tariffs as clearly not positive for overall UK growth. There will be direct impacts on inward investment and domestic investment decisions, particularly associated with manufacturing, as any investment that has a component of production serving the US will be under review, Rawlinson said.My anticipation is that investment decisions will be put on hold and that big binary decisions on where to locate investment wont take place until there is greater clarity on the longevity of the measures put in place.Noble Francis, economics director at the Construction Products Association, said short term uncertainty associated with reciprocal tariffs could impact global economic growth prospects and investor confidence. The rise in uncertainty means increased risk, which must be factored into the pricing of firms worldwide, leading to further inflation, and this is already bad news, he said.Francis also warned construction products imported from overseas could be subject to higher price volatility as exporters reassess established trade routes. While around three quarters, 76%, of UK construction products are sourced locally, the cost of materials which are commonly imported including electrical wires and sawn timber may be an issue for firms on fixed-price contracts signed up to 12-24 months ago when these potential risks wouldnt have been on most firms lists of key risks, Francis said. However, Francis also suggested prices for some products could decrease if countries which previously exported to the US move to export more to the EU and the UK to avoid high tariffs.Rawlinson added: There will be a lot of products from tariff hit countries including China and Canada looking for new markets, so expect some product and price dumping. The EU is already taking steps to erect barriers against low-cost aluminium. This might be more difficult for the UK.Meanwhile, HTA Design chair Ben Derbyshire warned the immediate effect of the tariffs could be further supply chain scarcity and cost inflation, adding: Both are immensely counter-productive to the governments efforts to ramp up housing delivery.MHCLG are doing their best to build a sensible response to the crisis of supply and affordability in housing and a trade war must not be allowed to trash their efforts, he said.Just as Starmer is working on considered responses to Washingtons new imperialism, I hope the rest of the world can find a way of reducing the disruption to the global supply chain on which the success of the industry depends. And while Kelly Boorman, national head of construction at tax consultant RSM UK, said the tariffs may not hit construction as acutely as other sectors, the ripple effect will be felt across all businesses. She said: It creates more uncertainty and could hit growth, so businesses need to plan ahead by considering diversification of material suppliers, reviewing procurement processes, investing in technology and focusing on working capital management to mitigate any potential risks.
