Beyond ChatGPT: Exploring the Power of Open-Source AI with Open WebUI and LibreChat
Beyond ChatGPT: Exploring the Power of Open-Source AI with Open WebUI and LibreChat5 min read·Just now--In the past, I’ve written about open-source alternatives to ChatGPT. These alternatives are not only free but also incredibly powerful. They offer multiple ways to interact with language models and cover various aspects like prompt management, adding tools, API integrations, and creating and managing agents and much more. There are many tools available, and two of my favorites are Open WebUI and LibreChat. Both are very powerful, but depending on the situation, you might prefer one over the other. In this blog post, I’ll highlight the key differences between these platforms so you can decide which one suits your needs. Please also see my previous blog post for both platforms where I cover the main features, configuration and usage in more detail.Core Purpose & Philosophy:Open WebUI: Positions itself as an extensible, feature-rich, user-friendly, self-hosted AI platform designed for offline operation. It supports Ollama and OpenAI-compatible APIs. Its documentation explicitly mentions a mission focused on democratizing AI and potentially crowdsourcing curated datasets.LibreChat: Presents itself as a highly configurable platform supporting a wide array of AI backends (OpenAI, Azure, Google, Anthropic, Bedrock, Assistants API, and numerous custom endpoints via librechat.yaml). The emphasis in the documentation is on flexibility, integration options, and detailed configuration. An explicit mission statement isn't present in the provided files.Installation & Deployment:Open WebUI: Recommends Docker (offering :main, :cuda, and :ollama bundled images). Also documents Python (uv, conda, venv), Kubernetes (Helm, Kustomize), and third-party methods. Provides specific guides for reverse proxies/tunnels (Nginx, HAProxy, Cloudflare). Has dedicated update instructions for Docker.LibreChat: Recommends Docker Compose for deployment, with npm recommended for development. Provides guides for Helm, DigitalOcean, HuggingFace Spaces (template provided), Railway (one-click deploy), and reverse proxies/tunnels (Cloudflare, Nginx, ngrok, Traefik). Has specific instructions for using Docker override files for customization.

Nintendo Switch 2 Won’t Have Achievements, Surprising No One
We’re multiple generations into PlayStation and Xbox having system-wide achievement systems in the form of Trophies and, well, Achievements. However, all this time, Nintendo refused to join the party. Of course, some had hoped that the upcoming Switch 2 would finally introduce something similar, but that’s not happening. The same was confirmed by Nintendo’s vice president of player and product experience Bill Trinen when asked by Polygon if the Switch 2 will finally have its equivalent of Xbox’s Achievements or PlayStation’s Trophies. “Nope,” he replied. Those hoping for a taste of achievements in Nintendo titles will still be able to do just that with the enhanced Switch 2 re-releases for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, but system-wide achievements will remain elusive, it seems. Given how Nintendo has operated over the years, it doesn’t exactly come as a shock. The Nintendo Switch 2 is set to launch on June 5, with pre-orders kicking off on April 9 everywhere except the US, thanks to the potential impact of pricing tariffs.

Gamers have ‘right to resell’ Roblox accounts and items, PlayerAuctions says
PlayerAuctions has responded to Roblox’s February lawsuit, in which the gaming company is looking to shut down the third-party buying and selling of Roblox’s digital goods, in new court documents filed in late March. The company claims in its response that Roblox’s rules preventing asset trading in secondary markets are “fundamentally anti-competitive” and a violation of California trade law. Roblox, it says, just doesn’t want to miss out on “fees and revenue” for transactions. It denies many of the claims laid out by Roblox’s lawyers, saying that Roblox players have a “right to resell the accounts, in-game items, and currency they have purchased from Roblox” under the “first sale doctrine,” which is a law that affirms a person’s right to resell something like a book after they’ve purchased it. (The ownership of digital goods, though, are a bit more complicated and disputed.)Roblox says in its original complaint that PlayerAuctions disrupts and undercuts its business and economy by allowing players to buy and sell their accounts, items, and in-game currencies. Roblox itself is a social gaming platform that hosts hundreds of different gaming experiences, be it games like Dress to Impress or branded worlds like a digital Universal Studios. Millions of people are playing at any given time; Roblox said in its complaint that the use of its market is comparable to that of “certain smaller nations.” Roblox claims the site not only infringes on its trademarks and encourages Roblox users to break its rules, but allows scammers to exploit its marketplace, too.“Roblox looks forward to making its case in court,” a Roblox spokesperson told Polygon. “Third-party sites like these have no legal affiliation to Roblox, operate unauthorized marketplaces in violation of Roblox’s Terms of Use and Community Standards, and can be confusing to Roblox users. Roblox is committed to promoting the safety and security of its users and protecting its intellectual property and will continue to be vigilant to combat unauthorized use of our platform.”PlayerAuctions claims in its response to the complaint that it spends “hundreds of thousands of dollars on risk management and fraud prevention measures to ensure that only legitimate trades between real gameplayers are allowed.” It continued: “[PlayerAuctions] has no interest in allowing scammers to use its platform to conduct nefarious transactions.”Right now on PlayerAuctions, a person can buy a highly-leveled account, currency for Pet Simulator, an armor set for Dungeon Quest, or a rare pet, like a cow, in Adopt Me. Players can also pay someone to farm currency in Blox Fruit and other games. Though PlayerAuctions denies that the marketplace is rampant with scammers, some communities believe that to be true: In 2021, the Neopets community reckoned with scammers and hackers stealing rare pets to sell on sites like PlayerAuctions. PlayerAuctions is also being sued by Grand Theft Auto 5 publisher Take-Two Interactive for running what it calls a “lawless enterprise.”Alongside the first sale doctrine and antitrust arguments, for its defense PlayerAuctions also claims that it’s not infringing on Roblox’s copyright. Instead, it claims its usage of its marks are covered under fair use. It also says the complaints are rendered null by the statue of limitations; PlayerAuctions has been running its Roblox marketplace for “nearly ten years” with no interference from the company. The suit also points to “growing criticism that Roblox has not done enough to protect children from a variety of predatory practices, including exploitative advertising and incessant microtransactions.” While children might not “think much about the alienability” of in-game items, PlayerAuctions says, adults and teens do.PlayerAuctions wants to see the lawsuit through to a jury trial.See More:

Microsoft Terminates Employee Who When On Stage To Protest Against The Software Company On Its 50th-Anniversary, Saying It Was Due To ‘Acts Of Misconduct’
An event celebrating Microsoft’s 50th-anniversary was disrupted by two employees, who claimed that the software giant was a  ‘war profiteer’ and that it had to stop using AI to fulfill illicit goals. The celebratory evening had the firm’s artificial intelligence head, Mustafa Suleyman, along with former and current Chief Executive Officer Steve Ballmer and Satya Nadella present on stage, meaning that there was no opportunity like the current one for these protestors to become the voice of the ‘voiceless.’ Unfortunately, these turn of events cost the employment of these individuals, with one of them almost immediately terminated from her position. The second Microsoft employee was also dismissed, but days after putting in a two-week notice Ibtihal Aboussad was the name of one of the protestors present at the Microsoft event, and after the memorable episode, the Redmond firm took swift action. Prior to being terminated from their positions, Aboussad and a second employee, Vaniya Agrawal, were sending separate emails to thousands of co-workers, stating that Microsoft should sever its contracts with the Israeli government. As reported by The Verge, Aboussad received the following the email, which reprimanded her for her actions. “Earlier today, you interrupted a speech by Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman during the Company’s 50th anniversary event in Redmond, Seattle, by yelling and finger-pointing at the CEO before a live audience of thousands of attendees, and making hostile, unprovoked, and highly inappropriate accusations against the CEO, the Company and Microsoft generally. While the CEO remained calm and attempted to de-escalate the matter, your conduct was so aggressive that you had to be escorted out of the room by security.” Both Aboussad and Agrawal are protestors linked to a group that carry out multiple protests against Microsoft for its closed connections with Israel. More details from the email to Aboussad said that her acts were designed to cause disruption at an event that is considered to be a huge milestone for Microsoft. Moreoever, she has yet to apologize for her actions, which ultimately led to her dismissal. “The company has concluded that your misconduct was designed to gain notoriety and cause maximum disruption to this highly anticipated event. It is also concerning that you have not apologized to the company, and in fact you have shown no remorse for the effect that your actions have had and will have.” Aboussad was a software engineer for Microsoft’s AI division, and based in Canada. The former employee’s actions could be based on the evidence she spotted, but so far, there is no substantiated proof that the company has any link to the atrocities happening in other parts of the world. Millennials are chided for job hopping. Boomers were actually worse.
This story is available exclusively to Business Insider subscribers. Become an Insider and start reading now. Have an account? When Adele Scott finished her undergraduate degree in 2004, she wasn't certain what she wanted her career to look like. She had some experience working in customer service, so when she got an offer to work for a data management company, she couldn't think of a compelling reason to turn it down.Over the next 17 years, much happened in Scott's personal life. She got married and had a baby. She got divorced. A few years later, she got remarried. She held several different roles and got promoted a few times. The company where she worked was sold at some point, which led to some culture changes in the workplace. But she stayed with her employer until December of 2021. So much radical change happened in her 20s and 30s, she tells me, that her job sometimes felt like the only constant."I stayed so long because the job offered career progression. I kept learning and growing," she says. "The people were great and the company offered flexibility, which was particularly important after I had my daughter."Despite headlines declaring millennials the "job-hopping generation" and articles accusing them of not being able to hold down a job or commit to one employer, Scott is far from an anomaly. For years, millennials have contended with a reputation for being fickle employees — flighty, unreliable, or simply unable to stay interested in one role for more than a couple of years at most. Lately, the label has been passed along to Gen Z as new headlines screech about a decadeslong decline in median job tenure. Take a step back, though, and the data paints a different picture. Despite millennials and Gen Z making up more than half of the workforce, data from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that median job tenure today is actually longer than it was in the 1980s when the BLS first started tracking it. Data from the Current Population Survey shows that about a third of boomers and Gen Xers switched employers at age 20 compared to less than a quarter of millennials and 20% of Gen Zers at the same age. The share of workers who have stayed with the same employer for over 20 years, meanwhile, is about the same as it was in 1983. And statistics from other countries mirror this, too. While job tenure has been declining over the past decade, it's coming down from a historic peak in the early 2010s.This idea that most boomers stayed with one employer for decades while millennials float between jobs just isn't supported by the data. There's even evidence that millennials are less likely to switch jobs as frequently as Gen X and boomers were in their youth. As it turns out, the job-hopping trope is a myth — one that raises a bigger question about the workplace.Daniel Zhao, a lead economist and senior manager on the economic research team at Glassdoor, says that the myth of the millennial job-hopper is a "personal pet peeve" — and one that other economists share."More often than not, when people talk about differences between generations they are actually talking about differences between ages," he says. "Of course, younger workers behave differently than older workers. But that's because they're young. Not because of their generation."Zhao explains that younger employees are more likely to switch jobs frequently — and always have been — because the types of jobs that people tend to do straight out of high school or college don't tend to be the types of jobs you'd hold for years on end. "Most young workers are still trying to figure out what they're going to do, and those first few jobs are important test runs — both for employees and employers," Zhao says. "It's always been that way, and this is not something that's new for millennials or Gen Z."The variations we do see in tenure have more to do with demographic changes and larger boom-bust cycles. One example is educational attainment: Some research has found that higher degrees historically correspond with longer job tenures. As the proportion of people who hold a college degree has increased dramatically over the past century, job tenure for those groups has increased a bit as well. Another example is the changing nature of jobs. Research from 2024 found that a shift away from manufacturing jobs — traditionally a high-tenure industry — has shortened average tenures. Declining rates of unionization have also led to shorter tenures: The share of US workers who belong to a union halved from about 20% in 1983 to just 10% in 2023.Data has also found that when the economy is robust and unemployment rates are relatively low, average job tenure across the entire labor market tends to be lower since people have more flexibility and can move to better roles. On the flip side, during downturns, there are generally fewer opportunities to switch jobs so workers tend to stay put. In the aftermath of the dot-com bubble and bust and during the Great Recession of 2007 to 2009, employers were doing less hiring and workers were less inclined to change jobs because of economic uncertainty, leading tenures to increase. While a recent report by Revelio Labs found that in some industries the youngest workers seem to stay with a job for less time than past generations, an analyst wrote that the shift was "better understood as a response to multiple forces working in tandem: structural shifts in the labor market and a rethinking of what work should look like." The report said that the recent rise of side gigs, contract roles, and flexible career paths has affected how long people stay in certain types of jobs. It's not that Gen Z is extra flighty — the nature of work itself is changing. Past experiences with a shaky job market can also shrink an employee's risk appetite over the course of their career. Both Zhao and Melody Wilding, a professor of human behavior and the author of "Managing Up: How to Get What you Need from the People in Charge," argue that millennials and Gen Z are prime examples of that."Millennials and Gen Z are actually less likely to switch jobs than their predecessors are at the same age," says Zhao. "For millennials, many entered the workforce when the 2008 recession hit. Many millennials were scarred by that experience and today still prioritize security over growth."Wilding agrees. "Many saw their parents lose jobs in the Great Recession, while others graduated with massive student debt into a weak job market," she explains. "Homeownership and parenthood are also happening later, which means career stability is a top priority for many millennials well into their 30s." Research corroborates this. One international survey recently published by Mercer found that job security was the top-ranked reason people across the labor market — which is dominated by millennials — stayed in a particular job.So what exactly stoked the myth of generational flakiness?Zhao speculates it might be related to fear: Older workers could be worried that the way they're doing things is becoming outdated and irrelevant. Perhaps buying into — even perpetuating — the myth is a way of casting a light on the shortcomings of younger workers to discredit their value to the economy: a means of trying to disarm the competition.Wilding has another theory. "Before social media, only your close friends and family knew when you switched roles. But now we broadcast it to everyone in our network," she says. "When something is easy to recall or notice, our brains trick us into thinking it happens more frequently, which is known as the availability heuristic. So while job-hopping rates haven't actually increased, we think they have because of seeing job change announcements in our feeds." Wilding notes that those who generally fall into the millennial age bracket also tend to talk more openly about work-life balance and their desire to work for companies that share their values. That, she said, could be misinterpreted as a lack of commitment and might give the impression of job-hopping. "But expressing those frustrations doesn't mean they take action on them," she says. "Previous generations likely had the same concerns but kept them private, while millennials and Gen Z are simply more willing to say them out loud." Perhaps we just like blaming millennials for things. Some of it also comes down to pure "generational blame," our age-old tendency to disparage younger people and point the finger at them for all sorts of social, political, and economic shifts. One academic paper from 2020 notes that millennials have been blamed for everything from declining interest in baseball to killing American cheese.Indeed, generational labels themselves are only loosely helpful in understanding what's changing over time. In the spirit of this, Pew Research announced in 2023 that it was limiting its analysis of trends through a generational lens. Kim Parker, Pew's director of social trends research, emphasized at the time that it's important for researchers to control for age and compare generations at a similar point in the life cycle."By choosing not to use the standard generational labels when they're not appropriate, we can avoid reinforcing harmful stereotypes or oversimplifying people's complex lived experiences," she wrote. The job-hopping stereotype in particular risks diverting attention from some of the more damaging, underlying issues in the workplace: a toxic culture, poor pay, or policies that don't align with workers' needs.Adele Scott, who now works in crypto, says she knows several colleagues who had similarly long stints with one employer. She isn't sure why her generation has developed a reputation for being flaky. "Perhaps we just like blaming millennials for things," she says.If someone's hopping from job to job, she theorizes, maybe that's less to do with a generational trait and more to do with the person themself — or maybe the companies they're working for. If a lot of people start leaving a certain company, leaders should question what they can fix rather than point the finger at a vast and disparate demographic group. That may be a harder conversation to have — but a much more important one.Josie Cox is a journalist who has worked for publications like Reuters, The Independent, and The Wall Street Journal.

Measles Cases Are on the Rise in the U.S. — Here's How to Stay Safe
According to the Texas Department of State Health Services, the state’s measles outbreak has reached 481 cases since January 2025 and has led to the deaths of two school-aged children and possibly one adult, though officials are still looking into the individual's cause of death. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the measles outbreak is not isolated to Texas and has moved to other areas of the U.S. There are now, as of April 3, 2025, over 600 cases in the U.S. This number already exceeds the 285 cases reported in 2024. As the virus continues to spread, here’s what you need to know about it. What Is the Measles Virus? Measles is a highly-contagious air born virus. It typically spreads from an infected person sneezing, coughing, or breathing, according to the National Health Service (NHS). Though adults can become infected, children are more susceptible to measles. Early symptoms can present as the following, according to the World Health Organization (WHO): CoughRunny noseFever Watery, red eyesWhite spots inside the mouth (inside cheeks) However, the biggest sign of measles is typically a full-body rash that starts on the head and face before spreading to the rest of the body. The virus usually lasts about 10 to 14 days, according to the Cleveland Clinic, that is, if the virus hasn’t caused other complications. Complications Caused by MeaslesMeasles can cause a slew of complications, especially in those who are high risk. According to the WHO, children under 5 years of age, immunocompromised people, and pregnant people all have a higher risk of contracting measles. Along with that, these groups are also more likely to develop complications from measles. These complications included severe dehydration, typically caused by diarrhea. Those in the high-risk groups could also develop ear infections, blindness, encephalitis — a brain swelling infection — and respiratory illnesses, including pneumonia, bronchiectasis, and laryngitis. Pregnant people who contract measles may deliver their baby prematurely. The biggest issue caused by measles can be death. According to the WHO, over 107,000 people died due to complications from measles across the globe in 2023, and most of these people were children. However, measles is a fairly preventable virus. How to Prevent MeaslesIn 1963, the first measles vaccines began their rollout in the U.S. Now, most children receive their measles vaccine through their MMR — measles, mumps, and rubella — shot. This two-dose shot is usually administered by doctors to children when they are around 12 to 15 months old, according to the Cleveland Clinic. Children then receive their second MMR vaccine when they are between the ages of four and six. According to multiple public heath agencies, including the Texas Department of State Health Services, the CDC, the NHS, the WHO, and the Cleveland Clinic, vaccinating against the measles is still the most efficient way to prevent contracting and spreading the virus.
