A Toxic Algae Bloom May Be Causing Sea Lions to Attack People
An image of three sea lions swimming in the ocean unrelated to the toxic algae bloom. (Image Credit: David Keep/Shutterstock) NewsletterSign up for our email newsletter for the latest science newsSea lions are typically not aggressive toward humans. However, these usually curious and playful marine animals have been making headlines recently for multiple attacks on people off the coast of California. The aggression is linked to a toxic algae bloom impacting nearly 400 miles of the Southern California coast, mostly in L.A. and Santa Barbara Counties. Aggressive and erratic behavior isn’t the only way this toxic bloom can affect these animals, and sea lions aren’t the only infected animals. Sea Lion AttacksRecently in March 2025, two people in Southern California were attacked by an aggressive sea lion. One man was on his surfboard when the sea lion charged, bit him, and dragged him off the surfboard. The Californian, Rj LaMendola, recounted his experience on a Facebook post. In it, he explained how the sea lion seemed “...feral, almost demonic, devoid of the curiosity or playfulness.” A similar incident occurred when a 15-year-old was in the water taking a swim test to be a lifeguard. The sea lion approached Phoebe Beltran while she was in the water and repeatedly bit her in the arm. Both LaMendola and Beltran are recovering from their injuries. Read More: What Is Red Tide – and Is It Getting Worse? Why are Sea Lions Attacking People? It’s likely that sea lions are becoming aggressive toward people because of a toxic algae bloom. According to researchers from NOAA and the Marine Mammal Care Center in Los Angeles, a bloom of Pseudo-nitzschia is the likely culprit. Pseudo-nitzschia produces a neurotoxin known as domoic acid. This toxin can cause animals such as sea lions to be lethargic, have seizures, act erratically, and it can lead to death. According to researchers, the 2025 bloom occurred earlier than usual.“What is unique about this event is that this bloom is very early in the season and doesn't appear to be associated with strong winds or a thick marine layer like we have seen in the past,” said Michelle Berman Kowalewski, founder and director at the Channel Islands Cetacean Research Unit, in a statement with NOAA. The algae blooms feed on nutrients brought on by upwelling — when winds bring nutrient-rich deep ocean water to the surface. With these nutrients, the algae can grow and spread faster. Some experts at NOAA wonder if run-off from the L.A. fires could have also led to the earlier bloom. Other Animals That Are ImpactedAs the algae blooms, it can infect fish, which are a major food source for sea lions and dolphins — the other marine animal greatly impacted by this bloom. When the sea lions and dolphins eat the fish, they become poisoned and can experience the symptoms listed above. According to NOAA, the West Coast Marine Mammal Stranding Network partners are receiving up to 100 calls a day about infected dolphins and sea lions. Besides the sea lion attacks, other reports indicated that dolphins have been seen swimming in erratic circles in shallow water and are being stranded on beaches. Marine experts can treat animals that have been poisoned with domoic acid, however, there are so many cases that the experts have to forgo treating all the sick and focus on who they think they can save.“We are having to do triage on the beach as we try to identify those animals where we have the greatest chance of making a difference,” said John Warner, chief executive officer of the Marine Mammal Care Center in Los Angeles, in a statement with NOAA.  NOAA and its partners are continuing to monitor the situation and are doing their best to keep both the animals and people safe. If you happen to be at the beach and see an animal looking lethargic or acting erratically, it’s suggested you stay 50 yards or more away from it. Article SourcesOur writers at Discovermagazine.com use peer-reviewed studies and high-quality sources for our articles, and our editors review for scientific accuracy and editorial standards. The Time I Tried to Fix My Computer (And Made Everything Worse)
The Time I Tried to Fix My Computer (And Made Everything Worse)2 min read·Just now--Some people are born tech geniuses. Others, like me, just think they are… until reality hits. The ProblemIt was a rainy Sunday afternoon. The kind where you either bake cookies, binge-watch a new series, or, in my case, decide you’re suddenly qualified to fix your own computer. My laptop had been running slow for weeks. “Easy fix!” I thought. After all, how hard could it be? Just clean a few files, uninstall some apps, maybe run a magical tool called Disk Cleanup. I even pulled up a YouTube video titled “Speed Up Your PC in 5 Minutes!” I was unstoppable. The Bold MoveFollowing the video’s advice, I deleted temporary system files. “You don’t need these!” the cheerful voice said. Gone. Then, emboldened by my success, I found a folder labeled “Windows System32.” It sounded big. Important. And, according to a random internet comment I skimmed (big mistake), deleting some of it would “really speed things up.”I hovered over the folder. My gut whispered, Maybe don’t… My ego shouted, Be brave! So, naturally, I listened to the wrong voice and hit delete. The Immediate RegretThe screen froze. Then it flickered. And then… black. No fan noise. No beeps. No cheerful Windows logo.Just me. Sitting there. In the dark. Holding a bag of regrets.Panicking, I did what any logical person would do: I turned it off and on again. Spoiler alert — it didn’t work. The Rescue MissionI raced to the nearest computer repair shop, laptop in hand, rain pouring down dramatically like a scene from a sad movie. The technician took one look, raised an eyebrow, and said:“You deleted System32?” I nodded, drenched and ashamed. He shook his head, half-smiling. “That’s like deleting your car’s engine because you thought it was too heavy.”Fair point. The LessonHere’s what I learned that day:Just because you can doesn’t mean you should.Always double-check advice you find online — especially from strangers named “xX_PcMast3r_Xx.”Respect System32. Always. In the end, I had to pay to reinstall everything and lost most of my files. But I also gained something priceless: a permanent fear of messing with things I don’t fully understand. Now, whenever my computer acts up, I just whisper a kind prayer to the tech gods… and call an expert. 🙏💻

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD Could Still Come to Switch 2, Nintendo Suggests
When Nintendo Switch 2 launches this June, it will accompany the long-requested addition of GameCube games to Nintendo Switch Online’s growing library of legacy titles. Three titles will be available on day one to Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscribers on the console, including The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker- though for those concerned, the GameCube original making its way to the Switch 2 doesn’t mean its 2013 Wii U remaster couldn’t be ported to the console as well.  That’s as reportedly per Nate Bihldorff, who is senior vice president of product development at Nintendo of America. Speaking during a recent episode of Kinda Funny Games Daily, Kinda Funny’s daily news podcast, Tim Gettys stated that Bihldorff told him at a recent Switch 2 press event that The Wind Waker HD’s release for the Switch 2 is still very much “on the table.” “I did ask if having The Wind Waker on Nintendo Switch Online precludes it from the Switch 2 getting the actual Wii U port at some point, and he was very quick to say ‘no, all options are on the table,'” Gettys said (via VGC). In addition to The Wind Waker, Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack’s GameCube launch will also bring F-Zero GX and Soulcalibur 2. Several others will arrive down the line, including the likes of Pokemon Colosseum, Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness, Luigi’s Mansion, and others.

Basically Twitter users would vote on who would be able to escape, and you could tie the vote to allow both characters to escape. Whole thing was hilarious. In the final round it was Iris against a pretty endearing character. No one believed they would actually kill Iris, so it led to her losing the vote and essentially disappearing, while Kairo was set free. Note taking in Blue Prince is pure bliss
The moment I knew Blue Prince was my kind of game was when I found a scrap of paper strongly encouraging me to take notes in a journal. You see, I’m something of a note-taking game aficionado. I want to jot down codes, diagram a puzzle, connect the dots. And Blue Prince might be one of the best note-taking games I’ve ever played.First, when it comes to organizing my notes, Blue Prince makes it very simple: I just add a new section for each room I uncover. While I enjoy the aesthetics of my incomprehensible Fez and Animal Well notes, they were a little hard to follow at times. It was hard enough figuring out what I should be taking notes on in those games, which can be part of the challenge, but also makes it hard to keep things orderly. My notes in Blue Prince still have a little bit of the conspiracy cork board look to them, but by simply organizing them by room it’s much easier to page through and find what I’m looking for. If I find a new clue in one room and have a eureka moment, I know exactly which room I need to draft to complete the puzzle. It even reinforced what I think is the simplest bit of advice I can give players who get hung up on a certain puzzle: just draft some new rooms. The pleasure of adding a new room to my notes finally got me to try some dead end rooms I didn’t realize could be so important. That’s exactly why I think taking notes works so well with the game’s roguelite structure. Many roguelikes and roguelites give you a taste of progress on each run, and Blue Prince is no different: Without revealing too much, there are “upgrades” you can find that will make your future runs more successful. But sometimes what you gain on a run is simply something new to jot down in your notebook. Will it matter for a future puzzle or the story? Maybe, but either way I have always felt like I’ve made progress on nearly every run (I don’t think I needed to draw a picture of the billiard table, but it does make my notes look cooler).Image: Dogubomb/Raw Fury via PolygonOf course, the game encourages taking notes because it makes solving many of the game’s puzzles much easier. Deciphering what is worth taking a note of is part of roleplaying as a detective: Finding the answers you need means knowing what questions to ask. Solving a puzzle is always a high point of note-taking games, but I’m often more thrilled when I figure out how to solve a puzzle. Cracking that nut is what notes, especially physical notes, really help you accomplish because you can lay out the information you have, rearrange it, and find new connections.I realize that not everyone enjoys taking notes while playing a game or prefer to take digital notes instead of physical ones. Some games, like Return of the Obra Dinn and The Roottrees Are Dead have exceptional in-game note-taking that made it easy enough to set aside my journal. One of my favorite games of all time, Outer Wilds, has an ingenious in-game chart for visually connecting your clues. But Blue Prince reminded me how good it feels to hold the pen and pad in my hands again.See More:

EU Rulings On Apple And Meta’s Potential Violations Of The Digital Markets Act Expected In The Coming Weeks
Regulatory authorities have been actively pursuing tech giants and penalizing them over violations of the law and for being involved in practices that sustain monopoly and discourage healthy competition. This has been the case for Google, which has been facing legal trouble for quite some time. Apple and Meta seem to be in hot waters now, with the European Union pursuing these big companies for allegedly violating the Digital Markets Act (DMA). While the fate of the companies was to be decided in March, due to the shifting focus on tariff negotiations, the date had been pushed back. Now, the EU announced that the decision would be given out in the coming weeks. EU announces that the decision on the breach by Apple and Meta will be issued in the coming weeks The European Union has been investigating Apple and Meta over the potential breaches of its Digital Markets Act (DMA) for quite some time, and although the decision was to be announced in March, amidst the ongoing global political tensions and growing focus on US tariffs and trade negotiations, the EU has pushed back its decision. The EU antitrust chief Teresa Ribera shared that the ruling would be delivered in the coming weeks. The European Commission has been pursuing both tech giants since March last year over their possible violations of the DMA Act, specifically focusing on curbing the dominance of big tech companies and encouraging competition by offering more options to the users in the digital market space. According to various speculations and sources, Apple and Mera could potentially face minor fines for violating the act. These modest penalties could also be attributed to the geopolitical tensions that have diverted attention and seem to be a dire focus currently. If the EU does levy a penalty, it could be the first strict enforcement of the new legislation and could potentially pave the way for future decisions. Both tech giants, especially Meta, have taken this delay as an opportunity to share their disapproval of the European Union's potential decision regarding compliance with the Digital Markets Act again. Meta maintains that the regulatory framework is designed to portray major tech platforms in a bad light and that it is unfair. It also took the opportunity to emphasize its cooperation with the authorities. While the European Union is gearing up to deliver its ruling on the ongoing case in the coming weeks, Meta continues to disapprove of the allegations placed on it. This also highlights the ongoing friction between tech giants and regulators regarding how the digital market should operate. Deal of the Day
