Mario Kart World has secret vehicles and a ‘damn good’ 120fps mode
Looks like it’s not just boats and planes you’ll get to drive in Mario Kart World (Nintendo) Ahead of a dedicated Nintendo Direct, people have already uncovered some of Mario Kart World’s secrets at a recent Switch 2 event. While there remains some understandable controversy regarding Mario Kart World’s price, it’s hard not to be excited for what is set up to be the largest entry in the series. We were very impressed by it after our hands-on preview and you’re sure to find plenty of positive impressions on social media by those who got to experience at the London preview event over the weekend. Some players even managed to stumble across some extra secrets not yet discussed by Nintendo, including larger vehicles you can pilot in the open world. YouTuber GetMadz drew attention to this with a recording of their play session at the London event, where they drove out into the open sea and spotted some kind of hovercraft. Upon driving into it, they were able to pilot it themselves before eventually disembarking back on dry land. This certainly isn’t the only example. In the game’s announcement trailer, you can see Birdo drive into the back of a truck and take control of it. We experienced this exact example while at the London event and were able to knock past other vehicles while roaming the open world. It’s not entirely clear if these hidden vehicles are exclusive to the free roam mode or can be used in regular races, but the example seen in the trailer suggests it could be the latter since other characters can be seen. Elsewhere, Digital Foundry and Engadget have claimed that Mario Kart World will boast an option to run at 120 frames per second rather than the standard 60 after its own hands-on session. Although neither have footage to demonstrate how 120fps looks in action, Engadget has nothing but praise for it, calling it ‘damn good’ and that ‘Racing has never looked this smooth on any Nintendo console.’ More Trending With any luck, all these features and more will be explained in greater detail at the upcoming Nintendo Direct. When is the Mario Kart World Nintendo Direct? A Nintendo Direct dedicated entirely to Mario Kart World is scheduled to air this week on Thursday, April 17 at 2pm BST. Nintendo hasn’t said how long it will run for, so there’s currently no telling how extensive it will be. There’s also no telling whether it’ll be enough to win over the people who are unhappy with the game’s £75 price tag. Hopefully, Nintendo will use the Direct to promote the Nintendo Switch 2 bundle that includes a copy of Mario Kart World since it’s £429.99 and thus lets you get the game at a cheaper price. The Last of Us‘ Kaitlyn Dever on Her Approach to Playing Abby
Last night, The Last of Us returned and viewers finally got to meet Abby, a crucial character in The Last of Us Part II video game who’s poised to be just as important in the HBO series. She’s played in the show by Kaitlyn Dever (No One Will Save You, Booksmart, Dopesick), who despite being just 28 has over a decade of credits to her name—but she’s never played a character as notorious as Abby, something she was well aware of when she took the role. No spoilers as to why Abby’s spoken of in such hushed terms among The Last of Us game fans—the TV show will catch up soon enough, presumably. But if you watched the season premiere, you know that this is a young woman with one of the oldest motivations in storytelling: revenge. “The way into Abby is knowing how grief feels and how loss affects you, especially in the immediate aftermath,” Dever told the Hollywood Reporter in a new interview. “There’s just this shock and this desire to make it all go away.” Calling the character “a chilly ice queen,” Dever also noted there’s a vulnerability lurking beneath Abby’s urge for violence. “She just needs something to make it all better … the only thing she can think about is revenge. She’s heartbroken, she’s sad, she’s lost and she’s trying to pick up the pieces.” However, she also knew a big part of nailing Abby was nailing her commanding presence: “When she walks into a room, she comes through with this intense strength. It’s what makes her scary and intimidating. But it’s all because of how much pain she’s gone through.” New episodes of The Last of Us arrive Sundays on HBO and Max. Want more io9 news? Text description provided by the architects. The concept for the new ''Pavilion A5'' of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at the Université de Sherbrooke was developed to foster the exchange of ideas between professors and students across all departments. The exchange of knowledge in all its forms is one of the central ideas behind the design of the new building and becomes the catalyst for its unique architectural form.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture! The new pavilion includes support functions for the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, such as professor/researcher offices, several meeting and conference rooms, and a large staff lounge. The offices of the professors and researchers are distributed along a regular grid, while the meeting rooms and staff lounges are distributed throughout the project following an upward movement towards the landscape. Through this ascension, the users are invited to contemplate the regional landscape from each floor and to interact and exchange ideas. These spaces present striking views of the region's mountains and natural light is present everywhere. The staircases become opportunities for informal encounters while energizing the linear aspect of the building. The new staff lounge, located on the upper level of the building, quickly became a favorite gathering place for users, offering a breathtaking view of Mount Orford. World’s tallest bridge set to open in China very soon
The Huajiang Canyon Bridge was constructed in only three years. Credit: Getty Images Get the Popular Science daily newsletter💡 The world’s tallest bridge is set to open this summer—and its height is not for the faint of heart. Constructed in just three years for roughly $283 million, China’s Huajiang Canyon Bridge spans the Beipan river in southwestern Guizhou. In order to take advantage of reducing the once hour-long trip between mountains to a matter of minutes, drivers will need to be comfortable with traveling a roadway that’s 2,051 feet above a mountain gorge. That’s 275 taller than New York City’s One World Trade Center skyscraper. While an undeniable feat of engineering, China is no stranger to vertigo-inducing suspension bridge projects. Prior to Huajiang Canyon Bridge’s completion, the country already had eight of the top ten tallest bridges in the world, as well as 43 of the top 50. The current record-holder—the 1,854-foot-tall Duge Bridge—is also located in China. It will only take a few minutes to drive across the bridge. Credit: Getty Images For this new bridge, engineers opted for a suspension bridge design given the difficult environmental conditions given Huajiang Canyon’s height. Suspension cables extending from two 860-foot-tall towers hang over the 4,660-foot main span over the river, and were specifically constructed to withstand the strong wind resistance typical at that altitude. The bridge’s main load-bearing steel truss structure includes 93 segments totalling about 22,000 tons, or around the same weight as two Eiffel Towers. Speaking with Newsweek, University of Calgary professor of civil engineering Mamdouh El-Badry explained construction likely required “cable crane systems, modular deck sections, and high precision anchoring.” Engineering factors went far beyond the project’s height. The extremely mountainous Guizhou region would have made transporting the construction materials a lengthy, difficult process, while the plateau’s atmospheric differences between daytime and evening are responsible for frequent high winds and adverse weather conditions. China is home to eight of the nine tallest bridges in the world. Credit: Getty Images “Despite its scale, the bridge has a slim profile and sleek design, which reduces wind resistance and material use and minimizes visual disruption to the canyon environment,” added El-Badry. Even with these challenges, China managed to complete Huajiang Canyon Bridge in only  three years and ahead of schedule. In comparison, the Gordie Howe International Bridge that connects Detroit and Windsor, Ontario, will have taken over seven years to finish by the time it opens for traffic in Fall 2025. Unlike Huajiang Canyon, the Gordie Howe is only 722 feet tall. However, there are understandable reasons for the lengthier construction time. Engineering projects in the United States are subject to numerous logistical, environmental, and political regulations. China’s centralized state-run government, meanwhile, isn’t beholden to the same oversight or concerns, allowing the country to fast-track endeavors like the Huajiang Canyon Bridge regardless of local pushback or ecological concerns.

Spotting climate misinformation with AI requires expertly trained models
News Artificial Intelligence Spotting climate misinformation with AI requires expertly trained models Meta's Llama and Google’s Gemini lag behind proprietary ones in the task Organizations that want to counter climate misinformation with AI need to bring in experts to guide training of the models, a new study suggests. rob dobi/Moment/Getty Images Plus By Ananya 1 hour ago Conversational AI chatbots are making climate misinformation sound more credible, making it harder to distinguish falsehoods from real science. In response, climate experts are using some of the same tools to detect fake information online. But when it comes to classifying false or misleading climate claims, general-purpose large language models, or LLMs — such as Meta’s Llama and OpenAI’s GPT-4 — lag behind models specifically trained on expert-curated climate data, scientists reported in March at the AAAI Conference on Artificial Intelligence in Philadelphia. Climate groups wishing to use commonly available LLMs in chatbots and content moderation tools to check climate misinformation need to carefully consider the models they use and bring in relevant experts to guide the training process, the findings show.
