America Makes $4.5M Project Targets Additive Manufacturing Integration
America Makes, the national additive manufacturing accelerator managed by the National Center for Defense Manufacturing and Machining (NCDMM), has issued a new open project call worth $4.5 million. Funded by the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering, Manufacturing Technology Office (OSD ManTech), the initiative is titled “Improvements in Manufacturing Productivity via Additive Capabilities and Techno-Economic Analysis 3.0” (IMPACT 3.0). The call focuses on demonstrating improvements in lead time, productivity, and yield for casting and forging operations using additive manufacturing technologies. Three project awards are expected. The IMPACT 3.0 request for proposal (RFP) includes two technical topic areas. The first, “AM in the Digital Foundry,” seeks to incorporate sensors and automation into metal foundries to increase production speed and flexibility. This includes the ability to support intermittent or low-volume orders, enabling more responsive manufacturing environments. The second topic, “Wire Arc DED Process Sensing and Control,” aims to establish tools and methods for monitoring and controlling wire-based Directed Energy Deposition (DED) processes. These methods are expected to improve confidence in using wire arc DED for military applications under oversight of Department of Defense technical authorities. John Martin, Additive Manufacturing Research Director at America Makes, emphasized the initiative’s relevance to national supply chain issues. “Additive and advanced manufacturing technologies are crucial for the castings and forgings industry and the Defense Industrial Base to overcome current national supply chain challenges,” he stated. “In partnership with our members, we invest in strategic initiatives to ensure warfighter readiness for essential military platforms, ultimately strengthening the Department of Defense’s supply chain and enhancing national defense resilience.” America Makes and the DoD launch IMPACT 3.0 to advance AM in casting and forging. Image via America Makes. Each project must begin within a mid-range maturity window, defined as Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 4–7 and Manufacturing Readiness Level (MRL) 4–7. The objective is to transition additive manufacturing from demonstration to deployment within metal casting and forging workflows, particularly for defense-relevant components and systems. Additive manufacturing positioned to support legacy systems and on-demand production America Makes supports AM adoption by coordinating research projects that serve both commercial and defense sectors. IMPACT 3.0 continues that trajectory, focusing on cast and forged parts—an area with high demand for reduced lead times and improved part availability. Additive technologies are increasingly used to replace or supplement legacy component production, where conventional manufacturing faces long procurement cycles and limited tooling availability. The current project call aligns with long-term Department of Defense goals to embed agile, digital-first manufacturing capabilities into its logistics and sustainment chains. The call for proposals opened on April 2, 2025. A kickoff webinar will be hosted on April 8 as part of the TRX event series. Technical questions must be submitted by April 16. Membership eligibility for participants closes on May 20. Final proposals must be submitted by 5:00 p.m. ET on June 2. Awards are expected to be announced by June 27. Full details, topic requirements, and eligibility criteria can be found in the official RFP posted on the America Makes website. America Makes logo. Image via America Makes. ChatGPT now interprets photos better than an art critic and an investigator combined
ChatGPT’s recent image generation capabilities have challenged our previous understing of AI-generated media. The recently announced GPT-4o model demonstrates noteworthy abilities of interpreting images with high accuracy and recreating them with viral effects, such as that inspired by Studio Ghibli. It even masters text in AI-generated images, which has previously been difficult for AI. And now, it is launching two new models capable of dissecting images for cues to gather far more information that might even fail a human glance. OpenAI announced two new models earlier this week that take ChatGPT’s thinking abilities up a notch. Its new o3 model, which OpenAI calls its “most powerful reasoning model” improves on the existing interpretation and perception abilities, getting better at “coding, math, science, visual perception, and more,” the organization claims. Meanwhile, the o4-mini is a smaller and faster model for “cost-efficient reasoning” in the same avenues. The news follows OpenAI’s recent launch of the GPT-4.1 class of models, which brings faster processing and deeper context. Recommended Videos With improvements to their abilities to reason, both models can now incorporate images in their reasoning process, which makes them capable of “thinking with images,” OpenAI proclaims. With this change, both models can integrate images in their chain of thought. Going beyond basic analysis of images, the o3 and o4-mini models can investigate images more closely and even manipulate them through actions such as cropping, zooming, flipping, or enriching details to fetch any visual cues from the images that could potentially improve ChatGPT’s ability to provide solutions. With the announcement, it is said that the models blend visual and textual reasoning, which can be integrated with other ChatGPT features such as web search, data analysis, and code generation, and is expected to become the basis for a more advanced AI agents with multimodal analysis. Related Among other practical applications, you can expect to include pictures of a multitude of items, such flow charts or scribble from handwritten notes to images of real-world objects, and expect ChatGPT to have a deeper understanding for a better output, even without a descriptive text prompt. With this, OpenAI is inching closer to Google’s Gemini, which offers the impressive ability to interpret the real world through live video. Despite bold claims, OpenAI is limiting access only to paid members, presumably to prevent its GPUs from “melting” again, as it struggles to keep up the compute demand for new reasoning features. As of now, the o3, o4-mini, and o4-mini-high models will be exclusively available to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Team members while Enterprise and Education tier users get it in one week’s time. Meanwhile, Free users will be able to limited access to o4-mini when they select the “Think” button in the prompt bar. Editors’ Recommendations

Tesla is reducing Cybertruck production and reallocating some staff to Model Y lines, workers say. Tesla has delivered fewer than 50,000 Cybertrucks, according to a March 20 recall. Tesla first started moving some workers off Cybertruck production in December, BI previously reported. Tesla is scaling back Cybertruck production. The electric-car maker has dropped production targets for several Cybertruck lines over the past few months, two workers with knowledge of the targets told Business Insider. Some lines are running at a small fraction of their previous capacity, and the company has also thinned out a handful of Cybertruck production teams by more than half, these workers said.Since January, the carmaker has continued to move some workers from the Cybertruck line, which is made at its Gigafactory Texas location, to the Model Y line, four workers said."It feels a lot like they're filtering people out," one of the workers said. "The parking lot keeps getting emptier."A spokesperson for Tesla did not respond to a request for comment.During the first three months of 2025, Tesla sold 6,406 Cybertrucks — half that of the previous quarter, according to an estimate from Cox Automotive. Before the truck's release, Musk said Tesla had more than a million reservations for the vehicle. To date, it has delivered fewer than 50,000 Cybertrucks, according to a March 20 recall. In April, Tesla unveiled its cheapest version of the truck, a $69,990 rear-wheel-drive variant.Tesla sales more broadly have been trending downward. This year's first-quarter delivery results, which are seen as a proxy for sales, showed a 13% drop from the same period in 2024.The most recent Cybertruck production shift follows similar moves made in December 2024, when the carmaker notified workers it would change Cybertruck production schedules and surveyed workers on their preferred role. At the time, workers said they were told the company planned to scale back production targets for the electric pickup truck for the first quarter of 2025.Tesla's lackluster delivery numbers come at a time when the company is facing pressure from all fronts. Competitors are edging in to compete with Tesla's aging lineup, demonstrators are staging protests outside showrooms, and the company's stock is down around 40% year-to-date.Shares of the carmaker are still up more than 53% from this time last year.During a press conference at the White House last month, Tesla CEO Elon Musk promised to double the company's vehicle production rates in the US over the course of the next two years. In February, during the company's biannual performance reviews, Tesla asked managers to identify which roles on their teams were vital to the company, three current and former workers said. The company first added the query to employee reviews in February 2024. Workers were also ranked on a scale of one to five. The company eliminated a small percentage of staff during the reviews, two people said.Do you work for Tesla or have a tip? Raw, Refined, and Resilient: 14 Projects Showcasing Concrete Block as a Design Language
Once seen as purely utilitarian, bare concrete blocks have increasingly become part of an architectural transformation. In regions where warm climates make insulation unnecessary, this material can be left exposed, free of cladding, finishes, or embellishment. In doing so, texture, bond, and form can define the building's character and simplify construction while creating new opportunities for expression and identity. This also creates a platform to explore the concept of material honesty. Beyond its aesthetic value, using a material "as is" can significantly reduce construction costs and minimize maintenance during the building's lifespan.
