Many a developer has tried to translate a shooter video game into a board game. Among the best I’ve played was Fantasy Flight Games’ Tannhauser, now out of print, which used a subtly coded game board to communicate things like range and line of sight. It’s a challenge that the team at Steamforged Games recently tackled in the development of Helldivers 2: The Board Game. Their solution? Make a different kind of game entirely.When Helldivers 2 burst onto the scene in February 2024, its appeal came in large part from the four-player cooperative gameplay. Sure, the moment-to-moment gunplay was excellent, but the big laughs always arrived thanks to the communication — or lack thereof — between the players. For board game designers Derek Funkhouser (The Walking Dead: Something to Fear) and Nick Yu (Dungeons & Dragons: Onslaught, Adventure Tactics), it was imperative to keep that style of interaction in the final board game. To do that, they actually loaded up the original game and took it for a spin.The original Helldivers, published in 2015, is a third-person overhead action game — kind of like Diablo with guns. And that, it turns out, makes a great template for a board game. The final result is a tile-based exploration game, with players moving around freely from point to point and pulling new encounters from a deck of cards.“We wanted to see what can we make in the tabletop space that feels like Helldivers 2, but isn’t Helldivers 2,” Yu said in an interview with Polygon earlier this month. “We can do all the great things that feel good in Helldivers 2. We still kept it on the level of the players, [meaning] each individual player is still an individual Helldiver. And we kept in a lot of [other elements of that game, including] the cool moment-to-moment things about fighting, combat extraction, friendly fire, and most importantly stratagems.”Otherwise, it’s a bit of a different take, both visually and mechanically. But while players aren’t aiming down iron sights, they are still communicating, still exploring, and still getting into all manner of trouble in various corners of the map. They’re still playing Helldivers 2, just from a different perspective.Many elements of Helldivers 2 also served as a point of reference by inspiring gameplay elements in the board game. Among the most important? The game’s heads-up display.In Helldivers 2: The Board Game, players drop onto the map, all geared up and ready to roll. They’ll know lots of things from the start, including the major objective and the alien force they’ll be fighting against. But, just as in the video game, all they’ve got to go on in terms of guidance is the equivalent of glowing pips on the HUD — a series of breadcrumbs to follow into battle.“One of the cool things that came out of this was the fact that it really puts players in this difficult situation,” said Funkhouser. “OK, if we all spread out and explore by ourselves, we’re going to find the objective faster and do better this mission. But it also means we’re going to be left alone to fight. So do we go in pairs? Do I go by myself?”And, just as in the video game, splitting the party often leads to challenging and hilarious outcomes.“We know my best friend over here is never going to be a team player,” Funkhouser continued. “He’s going to run off and do his own thing, so he’s going to die. Then we’re going to have to call him back in, we’re going to complain, be like, What are you doing? You’re wasting our reinforcements! The Talos Principle: Reawakened came with a new expansion for players to dig their puzzle teeth into called In the Beginning, on top of everything else in the remaster. The 18 puzzles in the new expansion are some of the toughest in the entire Talos Principle series, which is a credit to developer Croteam and the Talos Principle community since 16 of those 18 puzzles were designed in collaboration with members of the game's community. This guide will walk you through completing the Flying Cubes puzzle in the Egypt section of the In the Beginning expansion in The Talos Principle: Reawakened. The Talos Principle: Reawakened - In the Beginning - Flying Cubes Puzzle Guide Flying Cubes is a fun puzzle until it's suddenly not, and you're stuck trying to fit the last piece of it together so you can walk out of the puzzle area with your tetromino in tow. 3/4 of the puzzle is relatively easy for any Talos Principle veteran to solve. It's that last bit that takes a little extra finagling you might not immediately think of. If you just want a hint, I'll say that crossing the beams is your friend here. If you want the solution, read on. Phase One As in many Talos Principle puzzles, you first need to acquire all the tools you need to solve the rest of the puzzle. After entering the puzzle area, look immediately to your left and climb the ladder, where you'll find a jammer and a pressure switch. Grab the jammer, step on the switch, and watch a cube fly through the air onto another pressure switch. Now you understand where the puzzle gets its name and the final objective. You need to get four boxes to fly through the air, land on the four pressure switches, and open the tetromino gate. Jammer in hand, walk off the ledge, fall back to the ground, and then head further into the rest of the puzzle area, where you'll see two blue barrier shields, one to your left and one in front of you. Use the jammer on the one to your left. Walk past the barrier you just jammed, and you'll see the other two items you need to solve the puzzle. One connector is just out in the open, and another is trapped behind a blue barrier shield. Use the connector out in the open to free the trapped one by connecting the blue beam with the blue node that turns off the barrier trapping the other connector. Once the shield is down, grab the connector. For simplicity, from here on, I'll be saying C1 for connector 1 and C2 for connector two. Place C1 on the pressure switch that sits immediately in front of the red laser and connect it to the red beam. Grab C2 and connect it to C1 and the other two red nodes in your immediate vicinity. One of those nodes will make your jammer redundant, as they keep the same shield barrier off. Now you can pick up the jammer and bring it to the other side of the barrier so that you have the jammer, C1, and C2 on the same side of the barrier. Phase Two All right, at this point, you have all the tools you need for the puzzle in one place. As you read through the rest of this guide, you'll see that you can do these next parts in whatever order you want, but the way I'm going to lay it out is that you'll do the most confusing part first, so you can breeze through everything else. You'll notice that the red nodes you have lasers connected to are both keeping shield barriers off. Take the jammer and walk it across the opposite side of the far shield barrier, the one that leads to a corner of the puzzle area, where you'll find two fans blocking your path to a box and a blue laser behind a window connecting to a blue node that keeps one of the fans operational. Use the jammer to redundantly keep the same shield barrier down that the red laser is already disabling. Make sure you're using it on the inside of the puzzle area with the fans and the box, so you can walk both C1 and C2 to where the jammer is, as you'll need them both for these next steps. Pick up C1, connect it to the far red node, and place it on the opposite side of the wall where it would directly clash with the blue beam keeping one of the fans on. Pick up C2 and connect it to where the blue beam is coming from and C1. When you put it down, you'll create a loop that cuts off the beam keeping one of the fans on. Grab the jammer, and jam the other fan so you can grab the box with both fans turned off. Use the jammer and both connectors to bring the box to the main puzzle area by going through the same steps you used to get to the box in the first place. Then use the jammer to turn off the shield barrier at the top of the stairs. Walk the box to the top of the stairs and place it directly in front of the fan before stepping on the pressure switch to the right of the fan to activate it. This will send the box flying, where it will land on one of the four pressure switches, which will open the gate to the tetromino. Phase Three Grabbing that box and getting it to its pressure switch final destination took me the longest to figure out and is the most confusing part of this puzzle. Everything from here on out is pretty simple and also pretty easy to spot now that you've been around the whole of the puzzle area. Use the jammer to disable the shield barrier on the left side of the main puzzle area, where you went to grab C1 and C2. You can leave the jammer as is the for the rest of the puzzle. The last two boxes are sitting on top of elevated towers, and they're already ready to be launched by fans activated by blue and red laser nodes. Grab C1 and connect it to the blue laser and the blue node on the far right side of the puzzle to launch the first box. Grab C1 and place it in front of the red beam on the pressure switch and connect C1 to the red laser. Grab C2 and connect it to C1 and the red node on the left side of the main puzzle area to launch the final box. Fans were hooked from the beginning, and now, three seasons in, the show is proving to be just as sharp and gripping as its predecessor, especially with the arrival of the third season in March 2025.

Japanese banking subsidiary SMBC Consumer Finance’s annual survey of financial awareness in the country’s 20- to 29-year-olds revealed some troubling findings about the demographic’s gaming habits, Automaton reports. For example, 18.8% of the 1,000 respondents admitted to have spending so much on in-game purchases that it affected their ability to cover living expenses. Men (22.8%) were more likely to prioritize investing in gacha rolls over, say, food and rent than women (14.8%). While almost one-quarter of those surveyed regretted spending money in video games, the amount of people who purchased microtransactions increased by almost 6% from 2024’s survey. Positive responses to the statements “I’m willing to pay to have an advantage in-game” and “I can’t enjoy the game if I don’t make in-game purchases” grew several percentage points among both men and women compared to last year, even if average monthly purchases fell slightly and the majority of folks in their twenties continue to avoid such purchases altogether. Video games with in-app purchases, especially mobile apps and those with gacha mechanics, continue to bring in big money worldwide. In March 2025, combined spending through Apple’s App Store and Google Play reached $6.79 billion, with Japan alone responsible for 14.3% of that revenue. Some of the biggest game include PUBG Mobile, Candy Crush Saga, and Pokémon Go, but for every well-known game bringing in a profit, there are two or three massively outperforming them with little to no coverage on sites like Polygon. You might be well acquainted with it, seeing as its latest image generation tools have recently gone viral.Putting both the ethics of AI art as well as its errors, quirks, and inconsistencies aside for a moment, you may have noticed some issues with ChatGPT's image generation, especially if you've been using a lot. Since each image is contained to the ChatGPT conversation in which it was generated, it's quite difficult to keep tabs on all your images, unless you're exporting and cataloging them somewhere else manually. OpenAI might not be able to solve the other issues with AI art yet, but it can offer a solution to the last point.Introducing ChatGPT's Image Library On Tuesday, OpenAI announced Image Library, a new section of ChatGPT. The Image Library automatically stores all images you generate with ChatGPT's 4o model across your various discussions. That way, you don't have to scroll through past threads in search of a particular image you made. It sort of acts like the default image library on your smartphone: Any photos you take or save throughout the day end up in one centralized database. This Tweet is currently unavailable. It might be loading or has been removed. All ChatGPT account types now have access to Image Library—including Free, Plus, and Pro—and you can access it from both the app as well as the web app. You'll find the option, "Library," in the side panel on the left, under "Explore GPTs." (While the web app should update on its own, you may need to update your ChatGPT app before the option appears, however.)The Library itself is relatively straightforward. When you open it, you'll see your previous image generations. It might not be all of your images, however: I was a bit confused to see two of my most recent generations, knowing I had definitely generated far more with ChatGPT in the past. However, OpenAI says legacy DALL-E images will not appear here. Only images generated with 4o are added to the library, so don't expect your entire generation history to pop up. That said, OpenAI says it is currently backfilling all images for the new Library feature, so more of your older images may appear in your Library over the next couple days. When you select one of your images in your Library, ChatGPT presents you with a series of options: Edit, Select, Save, and Share. You can choose "Edit" to launch a new chat along with the image, so you can prompt ChatGPT with the edits you want it to make. Similarly, "Select" lets you highlight a portion of the image you want to edit, so ChatGPT will only change that selection. You can choose "Save" to add the image to your device's personal library, while "Share" lets you export the image to any destination you want.I don't use ChatGPT for much, especially image generation, so I can only imagine this feature will be a convenience for those that do. However, one pain point I see is the lack of a "delete" option. If you want to remove an image from your ChatGPT Library, you have to find the thread you generated it in and delete it from there. While Library lets you open the thread where that image was generated, you won't be able to delete the image or the thread from here. Instead, you need to locate the thread from the conversation title in your sidebar, then delete the entire conversation to delete the image or images within. It's pretty complicated, and I'm not sure why OpenAI does it this way, so here's hoping it adds a simple "delete" button to each image in the Library sooner or later.
