WWW.BDONLINE.CO.UKPilbrow & Partners replaces Allies & Morrison on stalled Vauxhall towers scheme in 70-storey redesignNew owners of long-delayed Vauxhall Square development planning 20-storey height increase Aerial view of the site on the border of Nine Elms and Vauxhall The new owners of the stalled Vauxhall Square site in south London have replaced lead architect Allies & Morrison with Pilbrow & Partners and revealed plans to boost the scheme’s towers to 70 storeys. Development partners Bmor and Cedarstone Capital are working up a fresh planning application for the long-vacant site in Nine Elms which would make the scheme’s towers 20 storeys taller than the existing consent. Source: Vauxhall Square LimitedEarly sketch of how the new plans could look included in a public consultation. A more detailed design proposal will be unveiled later this spring The new scheme, which will be submitted to Lambeth council this summer, would consist of four towers of 16, 19, 41 and 70 storeys containing 1,200 homes, 600 student beds and 1,250 co-living units. It would also contain a 240-room hotel, 2,700 sq m of office space and 5,000 sq m of retail and leisure space with its buildings centred around a new 4,200 sq m landscaped park which is being billed as the “heart of a new centre for Vauxhall”. The development team and its backers Cheyne Capital Management and GFH Partners have already carried out two rounds of consultation with local residents and are preparing to reveal more detailed designs in the coming weeks. A full planning application will be submitted this summer. Under early plans shared with Lambeth council this month, the scheme’s largest building would be by far the tallest in the Nine Elms tower cluster and one of the tallest residential buildings in the country. A spokesperson for Vauxhall Square said: ”This is a significant opportunity to bring investment and new life to a long-vacant site in the heart of London, creating much-needed homes, including affordable housing, improved public green spaces, and a range of amenities for both local people and visitors.” The 1.46ha site, bounded by Parry Street to the north, Wandsworth Road to the west, Bondway to the east and the railway line to the east and south, has been inactive and hoarded for several years after passing through a succession of owners. The scheme’s redesign comes 12 years after Lambeth council approved Allies & Morrison’s original proposals, designed for property developer CLS Holdings, which consisted of a total of nine buildings including two 50-storey towers. Allies & Morrison’s plans for the site, which were approved in 2013 A portion of this site was later sold to student accommodation developer Urbanest, which appointed Glenn Howells Architects, now known as Howells, in 2014 to design a 32-storey tower containing 454 student beds which was completed in 2018. The rest of the site, one of the largest vacant sites in central South London, remained undeveloped with CLS carrying out minor works on the site in order to lawfully maintain its planning consent. The site was later bought by Chinese developer R&F, which sold it to Hong Kong rival Far East Consotrium for £95.7m in 2022. Cedarstone Capital Partners and Bmor purchased the site with financing from Cheyne Capital last year. The project team for the new scheme includes planning consultant DP9, project manager Trigon and transport consultant Velocity. Allies & Morrison has been contacted for comment.0 Комментарии 0 Поделились 64 Просмотры

WWW.ARCHITECTSJOURNAL.CO.UKNational Trust suspends engagement over Northern Ireland cable car proposalThe £44 million Mourne Gateway project in Newcastle, County Down, involves building a visitor centre at the disused Thomas Quarry on Slieve Donard, the highest mountain in Northern Ireland. The proposal, for Newry, Mourne and Down District Council, includes a 1km-long cable car running to Donard Park. London and Belfast-based AJ100 practice TODD Architects is also on the project team, led by Arup and also featuring Gleeds and design consultancy Tandem Design. But in a decision this month, the National Trust, which owns the quarry, said it was suspending its engagement with the proposals because it had not received enough information about its environmental impact, amid concerns over the impact of thousands of visitors to the site.Advertisement The trust said it had ‘consistently stated the need for robust and comprehensive environmental assessments' for the project and that, in the absence of such an assessment, it was 'pausing our engagement at this time’. A National Trust spokesperson argued that the habitat on Mourne Mountain was ‘exceptionally fragile’ and contained internationally scarce dry heath, blanket bog and specialised flora and fauna, which were devastated by wildfire in April 2021. She told the AJ: ‘Our strategy prioritises nature restoration and looking after wildlife, historic places, and landscapes, and, as a conservation charity, we need to prioritise where we use our resources towards our core conservation objectives.’ She added that the organisation remains open to engagement in future and had shared data about its efforts to restore habitats following the 2021 fire with Newry, Mourne and Down District Council. The move follows warnings first aired in 2023 over the environmental impact of the proposed £44 million tourism project, as the AJ reported at the time.Advertisement The council has now said that an environmental impact assessment (EIA) will be ready before the end of the year. A council spokesperson told the AJ that it ‘has shared with the National Trust all the environmental information that we hold, and acknowledge that the environmental concerns they have raised are shared by the council and are being fully considered, and will be addressed as part of the development of the EIA’. The spokesperson continued: ‘This is a considerable piece of work that involves seasonal environmental/ecology surveys and regular engagement with key stakeholders, which is encouraged, including with the National Trust.’ d-on architects was previously engaged to RIBA Stage 2. The project went out for consultation in March 2023 with Newry, Mourne and Down District Council aiming for its completion in 2029. Initial designs for the scheme, also known as the Mournes Gondola, were criticised by some, including a member of the Northern Ireland Assembly, who called it a ‘metal monstrosity’, and a resident who likened it to a ‘Bond villain base’. Nial O Neill of d-on architects called it a ‘modern intervention on the scarred landscape left by the process of industrial quarrying’.0 Комментарии 0 Поделились 57 Просмотры

TECHCRUNCH.COMSmashing, the reading curation app by Goodreads’ founder, shuts downBuilding an app dedicated to helping people aggregate and read news, articles and social media posts in one place is apparently a tough proposition these days. Smashing, an AI-powered app that lets users curate the news and posts they’d like to read, is shutting down, seemingly because of its inability to scale rapidly enough. “We simply didn’t grow fast enough to keep going. We weren’t able to scale it into a sustainable product,” the company said in an email to customers announcing its closure. GoodReads’ founder, Otis Chandler, launched Smashing last June, aiming to use AI and the community to curate news articles, blog posts, podcasts and social media posts from around the web. The app let users follow their interests, submit content, and vote on suggested content to indicate relevance. It also had AI-powered summaries and a bot that could answer questions. The company said in the email that it had seven employees working on the product. Smashing had raised $3.4 million in funding from True Ventures, Blockchange, Offline Ventures, Advancit Capital, Power of N Ventures, and several angel investors. Thankfully, there are plenty of startups working on the problem Smashing set out to address. We have AI-powered news readers like Bulletin and Particle, as well as feed aggregator apps like Feeeed, Tapestry and Reeder — to pick a few. Smashing’s closure comes after Instagram’s co-founders shut down their AI-powered news app Artifact last year and eventually sold the tech to Yahoo.0 Комментарии 0 Поделились 83 Просмотры

3DPRINTINGINDUSTRY.COMAmerica Makes $4.5M Project Targets Additive Manufacturing IntegrationAmerica Makes, the national additive manufacturing accelerator managed by the National Center for Defense Manufacturing and Machining (NCDMM), has issued a new open project call worth $4.5 million. Funded by the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering, Manufacturing Technology Office (OSD ManTech), the initiative is titled “Improvements in Manufacturing Productivity via Additive Capabilities and Techno-Economic Analysis 3.0” (IMPACT 3.0). The call focuses on demonstrating improvements in lead time, productivity, and yield for casting and forging operations using additive manufacturing technologies. Three project awards are expected. The IMPACT 3.0 request for proposal (RFP) includes two technical topic areas. The first, “AM in the Digital Foundry,” seeks to incorporate sensors and automation into metal foundries to increase production speed and flexibility. This includes the ability to support intermittent or low-volume orders, enabling more responsive manufacturing environments. The second topic, “Wire Arc DED Process Sensing and Control,” aims to establish tools and methods for monitoring and controlling wire-based Directed Energy Deposition (DED) processes. These methods are expected to improve confidence in using wire arc DED for military applications under oversight of Department of Defense technical authorities. John Martin, Additive Manufacturing Research Director at America Makes, emphasized the initiative’s relevance to national supply chain issues. “Additive and advanced manufacturing technologies are crucial for the castings and forgings industry and the Defense Industrial Base to overcome current national supply chain challenges,” he stated. “In partnership with our members, we invest in strategic initiatives to ensure warfighter readiness for essential military platforms, ultimately strengthening the Department of Defense’s supply chain and enhancing national defense resilience.” America Makes and the DoD launch IMPACT 3.0 to advance AM in casting and forging. Image via America Makes. Each project must begin within a mid-range maturity window, defined as Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 4–7 and Manufacturing Readiness Level (MRL) 4–7. The objective is to transition additive manufacturing from demonstration to deployment within metal casting and forging workflows, particularly for defense-relevant components and systems. Additive manufacturing positioned to support legacy systems and on-demand production America Makes supports AM adoption by coordinating research projects that serve both commercial and defense sectors. IMPACT 3.0 continues that trajectory, focusing on cast and forged parts—an area with high demand for reduced lead times and improved part availability. Additive technologies are increasingly used to replace or supplement legacy component production, where conventional manufacturing faces long procurement cycles and limited tooling availability. The current project call aligns with long-term Department of Defense goals to embed agile, digital-first manufacturing capabilities into its logistics and sustainment chains. The call for proposals opened on April 2, 2025. A kickoff webinar will be hosted on April 8 as part of the TRX event series. Technical questions must be submitted by April 16. Membership eligibility for participants closes on May 20. Final proposals must be submitted by 5:00 p.m. ET on June 2. Awards are expected to be announced by June 27. Full details, topic requirements, and eligibility criteria can be found in the official RFP posted on the America Makes website. America Makes logo. Image via America Makes. WWW.DIGITALTRENDS.COMChatGPT now interprets photos better than an art critic and an investigator combinedChatGPT’s recent image generation capabilities have challenged our previous understing of AI-generated media. The recently announced GPT-4o model demonstrates noteworthy abilities of interpreting images with high accuracy and recreating them with viral effects, such as that inspired by Studio Ghibli. It even masters text in AI-generated images, which has previously been difficult for AI. And now, it is launching two new models capable of dissecting images for cues to gather far more information that might even fail a human glance. OpenAI announced two new models earlier this week that take ChatGPT’s thinking abilities up a notch. Its new o3 model, which OpenAI calls its “most powerful reasoning model” improves on the existing interpretation and perception abilities, getting better at “coding, math, science, visual perception, and more,” the organization claims. Meanwhile, the o4-mini is a smaller and faster model for “cost-efficient reasoning” in the same avenues. The news follows OpenAI’s recent launch of the GPT-4.1 class of models, which brings faster processing and deeper context. Recommended Videos With improvements to their abilities to reason, both models can now incorporate images in their reasoning process, which makes them capable of “thinking with images,” OpenAI proclaims. With this change, both models can integrate images in their chain of thought. Going beyond basic analysis of images, the o3 and o4-mini models can investigate images more closely and even manipulate them through actions such as cropping, zooming, flipping, or enriching details to fetch any visual cues from the images that could potentially improve ChatGPT’s ability to provide solutions. With the announcement, it is said that the models blend visual and textual reasoning, which can be integrated with other ChatGPT features such as web search, data analysis, and code generation, and is expected to become the basis for a more advanced AI agents with multimodal analysis. Related Among other practical applications, you can expect to include pictures of a multitude of items, such flow charts or scribble from handwritten notes to images of real-world objects, and expect ChatGPT to have a deeper understanding for a better output, even without a descriptive text prompt. With this, OpenAI is inching closer to Google’s Gemini, which offers the impressive ability to interpret the real world through live video. Despite bold claims, OpenAI is limiting access only to paid members, presumably to prevent its GPUs from “melting” again, as it struggles to keep up the compute demand for new reasoning features. As of now, the o3, o4-mini, and o4-mini-high models will be exclusively available to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Team members while Enterprise and Education tier users get it in one week’s time. Meanwhile, Free users will be able to limited access to o4-mini when they select the “Think” button in the prompt bar. Editors’ Recommendations0 Комментарии 0 Поделились 54 Просмотры

Tesla is reducing Cybertruck production and reallocating some staff to Model Y lines, workers say. Tesla has delivered fewer than 50,000 Cybertrucks, according to a March 20 recall. Tesla first started moving some workers off Cybertruck production in December, BI previously reported. Tesla is scaling back Cybertruck production. The electric-car maker has dropped production targets for several Cybertruck lines over the past few months, two workers with knowledge of the targets told Business Insider. Some lines are running at a small fraction of their previous capacity, and the company has also thinned out a handful of Cybertruck production teams by more than half, these workers said.Since January, the carmaker has continued to move some workers from the Cybertruck line, which is made at its Gigafactory Texas location, to the Model Y line, four workers said."It feels a lot like they're filtering people out," one of the workers said. "The parking lot keeps getting emptier."A spokesperson for Tesla did not respond to a request for comment.During the first three months of 2025, Tesla sold 6,406 Cybertrucks — half that of the previous quarter, according to an estimate from Cox Automotive. Before the truck's release, Musk said Tesla had more than a million reservations for the vehicle. To date, it has delivered fewer than 50,000 Cybertrucks, according to a March 20 recall. In April, Tesla unveiled its cheapest version of the truck, a $69,990 rear-wheel-drive variant.Tesla sales more broadly have been trending downward. This year's first-quarter delivery results, which are seen as a proxy for sales, showed a 13% drop from the same period in 2024.The most recent Cybertruck production shift follows similar moves made in December 2024, when the carmaker notified workers it would change Cybertruck production schedules and surveyed workers on their preferred role. At the time, workers said they were told the company planned to scale back production targets for the electric pickup truck for the first quarter of 2025.Tesla's lackluster delivery numbers come at a time when the company is facing pressure from all fronts. Competitors are edging in to compete with Tesla's aging lineup, demonstrators are staging protests outside showrooms, and the company's stock is down around 40% year-to-date.Shares of the carmaker are still up more than 53% from this time last year.During a press conference at the White House last month, Tesla CEO Elon Musk promised to double the company's vehicle production rates in the US over the course of the next two years. In February, during the company's biannual performance reviews, Tesla asked managers to identify which roles on their teams were vital to the company, three current and former workers said. The company first added the query to employee reviews in February 2024. Workers were also ranked on a scale of one to five. The company eliminated a small percentage of staff during the reviews, two people said.Do you work for Tesla or have a tip?
