AI and the Environment: What We Gain, What We Risk?
AI and the Environment: What We Gain, What We Risk?3 min read·Just now--AI isn’t magic. It’s a tool that can either deepen our environmental problems or help us solve them. The difference comes down to the choices we make, every step of the way.AI promises to help us solve climate change, save endangered species, and make our cities smarter. But there’s a side we don’t talk about enough: the environmental price tag that comes with all this digital magic. So next time you hear about an AI breakthrough, ask- What’s the real cost? And what’s being done to make sure the planet doesn’t pay the price? The Hidden Cost of “Smart”Every time you ask a chatbot a question or let an algorithm recommend your next show, there’s an invisible engine running in the background. That engine is powered by data centers — vast buildings packed with servers, humming 24/7, hungry for electricity and water.Interacting with generative AI can require 10 to 30 times more electricity than a standard search engine query. For example, a typical Google search uses about 0.3 watt-hours, while a generative AI prompt can use up to 10 times that amount, and some estimates put it even highe. And it doesn’t stop there. Once a model is trained, it still needs energy every time it’s used — by millions of people, every day. Training OpenAI’s GPT-3, for instance, used about 1,287 megawatt hours — enough to power 120 average U.S. homes for a year(1).Data centers need a lot of it to keep from overheating. By 2027, AI systems could be using nearly half as much water as the entire UK does in a year. And when servers get old, they become e-waste — full of toxic metals that don’t just disappear. It’s easy to get swept up in the excitement of what AI can do, but the reality is: all this innovation comes at a real, physical cost to the planet.AI as an Environmental AllyHere’s where it gets interesting: AI is also one of our best tools for fighting the very problems it creates. In agriculture: AI helps farmers use less fertilizer and water by analyzing soil and weather data. It can spot pests before they become a problem, saving crops and reducing chemical use.In energy: AI predicts when buildings need heating or cooling, cutting energy waste. Google’s DeepMind used AI to slash energy use in its own data centersFor renewables: AI forecasts how much sun or wind we’ll get, making solar panels and wind turbines more reliable.Climate action: AI tracks emissions and weather patterns, helping governments and scientists make smarter decisions.Wildlife and disaster response: AI sorts through satellite images to find endangered animals or spot wildfires early, giving us a fighting chance to respond.Which Side Will Win?The truth is, it’s both — and which side wins depends on us.We can make AI less wasteful by:Designing smarter, more efficient algorithmsPowering data centers with renewablesRecycling water and hardwareBeing honest about the environmental costs, not just the benefits278We can also push for policies that hold tech companies accountable, so the burden doesn’t fall on the communities already hit hardest by pollution and climate changeResources1.Explained: Generative AI’s environmental impact

It's obvious why we didn't really get that in the game, but I think for the show you can easily show some of Tommy's activities in Seattle from his point of view. Also, if we're assuming they end if at the theater, I do wonder if there's a possibility that we do get the Abby vs Ellie fight already. Ending the season with Abby threatening to shoot Ellie is okay, but I think ending it with Tommy "dead" and Ellie & Dina beaten up could be a great way to end it too.  Mzo Member Nov 30, 2017 1,397 I'm interested to see if they decide to still go with towering wooden structures creating narrow bridges between skyscrapers. But does its second season live up to the GOAT status of the first? www.gq-magazine.co.uk GQ hyping the fuck out of Mark Mylod's episode, comparing it to a GoT Battle Episode (not really spoilers, but marked for anyone that wants to go in totally blind): Without crossing too many red spoiler lines, it is early in the season that Jackson finds itself under threat. What follows is an episode long extended set-piece in which the town is assaulted by the horde — towering bloaters, runners, clickers, you name it — evoking the biggest, most visceral and goriest battles from the peak of HBO's flagship fantasy series. Explosive barrels, flamethrowers, clicker-hungry dogs and enough ammunition to arm a small state are deployed in defence of the settlement; it's the sort of bicep-flexing episode you watch and think, "Ah, so this is where half of the budget went". Not that it's all about the flashy effects and violence. The episode has clear emotional stakes, and you care about the outcomes for almost all involved — even the peripheral characters we might've only momentarily glimpsed in prior scenes. The actors across the ensemble put in series-best work, with masterful direction from Succession's Mark Mylod, who deftly weaves together the episode's most emotional and action-heavy beats. Altogether, it's the certain Emmy play — sure to go down as a TV all-timer, and waxed poetic about in the same way as season one standout "Long, Long Time". TSMC Breaks Silence On Reports It Shipped Advanced AI Chips To China’s Huawei
Menu Home News Hardware Gaming Mobile Finance Deals Reviews How To Wccftech Finance TSMC Breaks Silence On Reports It Shipped Advanced AI Chips To China’s Huawei Ramish Zafar • Apr 19, 2025 at 04:19pm EDT This is not investment advice. The author has no position in any of the stocks mentioned. Wccftech.com has a disclosure and ethics policy. The Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) has responded to reports that it shipped artificial intelligence processors to Chinese technology giant Huawei. Huawei's Ascend processors have been the subject of a lot of debate, with one fresh report from Semi Analysis claiming that Huawei managed to acquire the processors from TSMC. The Taiwanese firm is prohibited by the US from shipping advanced chips to Huawei, and TSMC's statement asserts that it has not shipped any products to the Chinese company since September 2020. The US restricted sales to Huawei under the previous Trump Administration in May 2020, with a 120-day grace period allowing shipments until mid-September of that year. TSMC Asserts It Is Communicating With US Government To Root Out Suspicious Orders Chinese access to high-end AI chips came to the forefront of attention in January after startup DeepSeek's AI models managed to mimic their Western counterparts in performance. Multiple reports claimed that DeepSeek had access to NVIDIA's H20 AI GPUs, which are specialty variants made for China and have since been restricted for sale by the US government. Simultaneously, a report from the Center of Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) claimed that Huawei could produce more than half a million advanced Ascend AI chips. Another report from Semi Analysis, which surfaced last week, was quite explicit as well. It outlined that the US government and chip analysis firm Tech Insights had acquired Huawei's Ascend chips and determined that they had indeed been manufactured by Huawei. For its part, the CSIS report mentioned that Huawei had acquired the dies used to make these chips ahead of the US sanctions on Huawei implying that TSMC did not violate any American restrictions. The sanctions on Huawei were levied by the first Trump administration in May 2020. At the time, TSMC's leading-edge manufacturing technologies were the 7-nanometer and 7-nanometer+ nodes, which Huawei primarily used for its smartphone processors. They allowed a 120-day grace period, which enabled orders placed before May 15th to be shipped by September 14th. In its statement issued after Semi Analysis's report, TSMC asserts that it is complying with all applicable laws for its products. The latest AI chips require 7-nanometer and advanced manufacturing processes such as 5-nanometer for their production. TSMC's latest technology right now is the 3-nanometer process which is used for low power chips such as smartphone processors. According to TSMC, it stopped shipping orders to Huawei since September 2020. The firm adds that if it notices any suspicious orders, it will "take prompt action to ensure compliance," which includes conducting due diligence and informing relevant authorities. The firm also revealed that it has already communicated with the Commerce Department when it comes to suspicious orders and will continue to do so in the future. So an easy jog might have you in zone 2 for a whole workout, while a HIIT workout might have you bouncing between zones 1 and 5. Read on for a breakdown of what heart rate zones are, how to use them, and some of the caveats you should know when you're training this way. One quick thing before we dive in: heart rate zones are for cardio. Cardio means exercise that involves doing the same rhythmic movement over and over, like running or swimming or stair climbing. Heart rate zones mean nothing for strength training, even if you have an app or watch that reports them to you as if they matter. Don't worry too much about zones as a beginnerI'm going to start with a huge caveat. You may hear everybody talking about zone this and zone that, but if you're new to exercise or new to heart rate tracking, you're actually better off ignoring zones for a while. Pay more attention to how you feel. A workout that's meant to be easy should feel easy, regardless of what number is on your heart rate monitor. A workout that's meant to be hard should feel hard. Over time, if you watch your heart rate during exercise, you'll start to notice which numbers go with which feelings. Knowing that you see (for example) 140 on your watch when you're in the middle of an easy workout means a lot more than knowing that your device considers it to be "zone 2." Zone workouts are hard for beginners to follow, for a few reasons: Your zones may be hard to stay in, especially the lower zones like zone 2. If your heart rate skyrockets into zone 4 as soon as you start to jog, a zone 2 jog may just not be possible right now. Your zones may not be properly calibrated. You need an accurate max heart rate to set your zones properly (more on that below), and an age-based formula is not guaranteed to be correct. You have more important things to do than stick to zones! Your body needs to learn technique, pacing, and all kinds of physical and psychological skills. Every brain cell you spend on obsessing over zones is a brain cell that's not available for the more important tasks before you.Remember, the reason your watch tells you your heart rate is because that's something that is easy for the watch to measure and display—not because it's the most important thing for you to pay attention to. Know that zones are different from app to appThere isn't just one heart rate zone system! There are dozens, if not hundreds. Some have three zones, some four, some five, and some even more. Even when two apps or wearables use a five-zone system, they don't necessarily set the boundaries of the zones in the same places. For example, some systems will set "zone 2" at 60% to 70% of your max heart rate, while others will use 65% to 75%. The different systems also don't agree on what those percentages are of. Sometimes it's maximum heart rate, which we'll discuss below; sometimes it's heart rate reserve, which also takes your resting heart rate into account. Less commonly, you might find zones based around other metrics like lactate threshold. The most common five-zone systemI know you're not going to be happy until you see me set out a chart of numbers, so here goes. This is not the only zone system out there, but it's one that works decently well for most purposes, and you'll find it in several different apps and wearables. It's not the best, but it is perhaps the simplest. You'll need to know your maximum heart rate (MHR), and then you can take percentages of that to know your zones: Zone 1: 50% to 60% of your maximum heart rate (MHR), though some systems will go up to 65%Zone 2: 61% to 70% of MHR; some systems will go up to 75%Zone 3: 71% to 80%, or it might be more like 76% to 85%Zone 4: 80% to 90%, or sometimes 85% to 95%Zone 5: All the way up to 100%In these systems, zone 1 is for warmups or very easy recovery between intervals. Zone 2 is for easy aerobic training, like a light jog—something you could keep up for hours if you're reasonably fit. Zone 3 is for stuff that feels like a medium intensity, like a faster jog, something that would tire you out to do for more than an hour, but you can keep it up pretty steadily. Zone 4 is when things get intense, usually for just a few minutes at a time, and you’ll only bump in zone 5 for a few seconds during your hardest intervals. You can’t sustain work in zone 5 for much longer than that. If it’s a four-zone systemFour-zone systems cover the same general territory, but break it down into fewer, bigger chunks. Usually they do this by combining the first two zones, to give you something like this: Zone 1: anything below 70% (or 75%)Zone 2: 71% to 80% (or sometimes 76% to 85%)Zone 3: 81% to 90% (or 86% to 95%)Zone 4: Everything on up to 100%In these systems, easy-effort endurance work is generally done in zone 1 (instead of warming up in zone 1 and considering the workout itself to be zone 2). Zone 2 is for medium efforts, zone 3 for hard efforts, and zone 4 for absolutely killer, short intervals. How to find your maximum heart rateNow that you know the zones, you’re only missing one thing: your maximum heart rate, which forms the basis for them all. Commonly, these systems will recommend you subtract your age from the number 220 to find your max heart rate. Occasionally they’ll use another formula. But these formulas are often wrong, since they give a single number for everybody at the same age. We're supposed to believe all 43-year-olds have a max heart rate of 177, but in reality there are plenty of 43-year-olds with a max heart rate over 200, and it's not rare to find some 43-year-olds with a max heart rate in the 150s. (Similar caveats apply to any age.) The person with the 200 max will wonder why they're always in "zone 4" when they feel like they're in zone 2, and the person with the 150 max will wonder why they feel like they're dying when they're in "zone 3." So don't rely on a formula, especially if you're seeing zones that don't make sense for how a workout felt. Ideally you’ll do a max heart rate test as I described here, or make an educated guess by looking up the highest heart rate that your device recorded during one of your hardest workouts. What each heart rate zone should feel likeYou can do a little reality check on your zones by making sure they feel right. Here's what they should feel like: Zone 1 will feel very easy, barely like you’re exercising at all. In zone 2, you’ll start to feel hot and sweaty, but you can still easily carry on a conversation. In zone 3, your breathing will get a bit heavier. The lower end of zone 3 is still conversational, but toward the top of this zone you’ll only be able to say a few words at a time. In zone 4, you’re working hard and not in the mood to talk, but you probably feel like you could keep this effort up for a while—or a few more minutes at least. Zone 5 is your absolute top speed, and you can only stand it for a few grueling seconds. If you aren’t sure of your max heart rate, try using this effort-level guide for a while. When you actually do get to a workout that calls for zone 5, give it your all—then check your heart rate monitor to see what number it gave you. How do I stay in zone 2? I have more on zone 2 here, including what it is, how to do it, and why it might be just a teensy bit overrated. Zone 2 refers to an easy effort that you can carry on basically forever. If you're a beginner, walking might be a zone 2 workout. For an athlete, zone 2 might be a brisk jog that they could keep up for a few hours. The best marker of a zone 2 workout is that you stop because time is up, not because you're too tired to continue. There's nothing special about staying in zone 2, except that it's low-fatigue and so you can do a lot of it. If you find your heart rate inching up into zone 3, that's honestly totally fine for probably 99% of people. The more exercise you do, the more you have to pay attention to the intensity of it. Athletes who are exercising 10 hours every week need to make sure that some of those workouts are easy ones. But if you're getting in a few 30-minute jogs or exercises classes, any intensity is fine so long as you end most workouts feeling good and not totally exhausted.

A bunch of robots ran a half-marathon alongside humans and it was incredibly goofy
Beijing held what’s being called the world’s first half-marathon for robots, allowing bipedal bots to compete alongside human runners, and as one might expect, ridiculousness ensued. The robots, which had human operators running with them, for the most part struggled to make it through the course at all, let alone complete the full 13 miles within the four-hour cutoff time. “One fell at the starting line,” Bloomberg reports. “Another’s head fell off and rolled on the ground. And one collapsed and broke into pieces.” They may not be gold medalists just yet, but the videos sure are entertaining. The humanoid robot half-marathon in Beijing just started! pic.twitter.com/8vr2nXQwuR— The Humanoid Hub (@TheHumanoidHub) April 19, 2025 According to Bloomberg, 21 robots participated in the race, but the winner — X Humanoid’s five-foot-ten Tiangong Ultra — was one of only four to make it all the way to the end in the allotted time. And at two hours and 40 minutes, its finishing time was more than double that of the winning human runners. The teams were allowed to do battery swaps (Tiangong Ultra reportedly finished on its third battery) and even switch out their robots mid-race for substitutes, though doing that came with time penalties. Along with Tiangong Ultra, which ran at around five miles per hour, the robot runners included Noetix Robotics’ N2, a Gundam-inspired robot, a “female-looking” bot called Huan Huan, and the 30-inch-tall Little Giant robot made by local college students, Bloomberg reports. Many of them were wearing human running shoes. This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/ai/a-bunch-of-robots-ran-a-half-marathon-alongside-humans-and-it-was-incredibly-goofy-215134524.html?src=rss

Android XR smart glasses prototype looks like simple thick-rimmed spectacles
Although experiences like Apple’s spatial computing look impressive in demos, their practical use in daily life is hampered by one important consideration. No matter how lightweight you make them, headsets that wrap around your skull and block your vision will always be awkward, isolating, and even hazardous. Ideally, we’ll get our eXtended reality or XR fix through eyewear that doesn’t look any different from the ones you wear, presuming you wear prescription glasses, of course. Google might finally be changing that status quo with its renewed enthusiasm for AR, VR, MR, XR, and everything in between. Although Samsung’s Project Moohan headset was the focus of much attention when Google announced its new Android XR endeavor, the platform wasn’t meant to stop there. It will also be available in the regular smart glasses design, and Google finally reveals a little bit of what it was working on. Designer: Google In a TED 2025 talk, Google’s Shahram Izadi showed off a prototype Android XR device in action. While the demo itself was pretty impressive, especially for having no technical problems during the entire test, most are probably already used to the features that the AI-powered Android XR can bring to the table. What really caught people’s eyes, however, were the glasses used for that demonstration. They looked pretty discreet, at least as far as very thick glasses are concerned. Unlike specs from Xreal or VITURE, however, the lenses are completely clear and transparent. You can see the world in front of you clearly, and people can see your eyes unobstructed. Despite that simple and relatively slim design, the prototype still had room for a display to let you read text or notifications, though it will be in a small corner or side of your vision rather than in your face. The smart glasses naturally have cameras, as Gemini, which is the main point for user interaction on Android XR, needs to be able to see the world as you see it. It listens to your voice prompts, of course, but it needs to understand what you’re looking at in order to make sense of your requests. For example, it was able to remember where you last put down your keys, play music based on an album jacket you’re holding, or even explain a diagram from a book you have opened before you. This “rolling window” AI experience, while powerful, might also raise privacy concerns, seeing as it can remember things it saw even when the wearer wasn’t paying attention or intentionally looking at a thing. And then there’s the style of the glasses themselves, since not everyone will be happy with such thick frames, and it might be a while before we can actually have XR glasses that are really stylish and inconspicuous. The post Android XR smart glasses prototype looks like simple thick-rimmed spectacles first appeared on Yanko Design.
