Two of 2024’s most innovative horror movies are now on Hulu
Horror movies are constantly calling out for experimentation; it’s a whole genre based around rules that are just waiting to be bent, twisted, or broken into a brand-new shape. Which is exactly why it’s such a shame that so many new horror movies are just slight variations on the same old ideas. But just last year we got two truly original horror movies — Azrael and In a Violent Nature — that truly felt like bold new directions for the genre. And now that both movies are streaming on Hulu, you can finally check them out for yourself.  In a Violent Nature’s logline is simple: It’s a slasher where we follow the killer instead of the victims. It’s a brilliant idea on paper, but one that’s obviously harder to do in practice. After all, most of these monsters don’t really talk, and while their feats of violence are often truly remarkable, that usually only makes up a small portion of the overall movie. If you really think it through, a slasher where you follow the killer would probably mostly be a movie about walking. And that’s exactly what In a Violent Nature is: a beautiful, pastoral film about a big monster who quietly and methodically walks through forests and fields in search of the teens who disrupted his supernatural slumber. Of course, when he actually does catch up with those teens, they meet violent and horrible ends. But the time in between is so wonderfully peaceful, and it gives the movie a different feeling of time and pacing than any other slasher you’ve seen.  Azrael, on the other hand, is a little more apocalyptic. The film takes place after the rapture and follows a woman named Azrael (Samara Weaving) who escapes from her cult, which has taken a vow of silence because they believe speech kept them out of heaven. To say too much about this one would ruin some of its fun, but suffice it to say that the woods Azrael escapes into are teeming with strange demonic creatures, and the cult she ran away from was up to more than just keeping quiet.  The whole movie is absolutely thrilling, and gorgeously shot, but what really makes Azrael unique is the fact that it’s almost entirely free of dialogue. Even without words, the movie’s incredible world comes through loud and clear, and Weaving’s talent for big-eyed expression makes her the perfect on-screen cipher for this wordless post-apocalypse.  Both of these movies are fascinating on their own, but taken together, it’s hard not to hope that their releases last year could be a sign that more experimentation is on the way in the horror genre. But as we wait for more new and unique movies on the horizon, at least you can stream both In a Violent Nature and Azrael on Hulu for now.

This Healthcare Data Breach Compromised 5.5 Million Patients' Information
Data breaches targeting healthcare and compromising patient information seem to be coming fast and furious, the latest of which occurred at Yale New Haven Health (YNHHS), a massive nonprofit healthcare network in Connecticut. Hackers stole the data of more than 5.5 million individuals during an attack in March 2025. Other major cyber incidents revealed by healthcare organizations in recent weeks include Blue Shield of California's exposure of 4.7 million members' data to Google along with a breach at Maryland's Frederick Health Medical Group, which affected nearly a million patients. What happened at Yale New Haven Health? According to a public notice on the YNHHS website, the organization discovered "unusual activity" on its system on March 8, 2025, which was later identified as unauthorized third-party access that allowed bad actors to copy certain patient data. While the information stolen varies by individual, it may include the following: NameDate of birthAddressPhone numberEmail addressRaceEthnicitySocial Security numberPatient typeMedical record numberYNHHS says the breach did not include access to medical records, treatment information, or financial data (such as account and payment information). What to do if your records were affectedIf you've been a patient in the YNHHS network, your data may have been compromised. The organization began sending notices to those affected on April 14, so keep an eye out for a letter in the mail. YNHHS is providing complimentary credit monitoring and identity protection services to patients whose Social Security numbers were stolen, with directions for taking advantage of these services presumably included in the mailed notices. You can call the support line at 855-549-2678 Monday to Friday between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. ET if you have questions about the incident or how you may be affected. There are also class action lawsuits in the works seeking damages for individuals impacted by the breach, so you can keep an eye out for news on those filings. As always, you can't reclaim stolen data, but you can minimize the potential negative impact on your life. Freeze your credit, place a fraud alert, and request copies of your credit report regularly. Lock down your Social Security number to prevent identity theft. You should also review medical bills and statements from YNHHS and report any discrepancies immediately. Exercise good digital hygiene practices, such as avoiding clicking links in messages you receive.

OpenAI's Deep Research tool is coming to free accounts
OpenAI is giving free ChatGPT users limited access to its Deep Research tool without the need to pay for it. In addition, the company has expanded the tool's limits for all users by rolling out a lightweight version of it powered by its o4-mini model. It says the o4-mini Deep Research feature produces slightly shorter responses, but is "nearly as smart, more cost-efficient and delivers similarly high-quality results" as the original version. OpenAI previously released the tool for use by paying Pro, Plus, Team, Edu and Enterprise subscribers. But even they have a limited number of Deep Research queries per month.  The lightweight version of deep research is powered by a version of OpenAI o4-mini and is nearly as intelligent as the deep research people already know and love, while being significantly cheaper to serve.Responses will typically be shorter while maintaining the depth and… pic.twitter.com/H2UD5GThVj— OpenAI (@OpenAI) April 24, 2025 Plus users, for instance, only had access to 10 inquiries, whereas Pro subscribers paying $200 monthly had a limit of 125. Now, when users hit their limit on the original version, ChatGPT will switch over to the lightweight one. Plus and Team subscribers are now getting an extra 15 Deep Research inquiries a month on top of their 10, while Pro users are getting an additional 125 tasks powered by the lightweight version of the tool on top of their 125. Enterprise and Edu users are getting access to the lightweight tool next week and will get 15 more inquiries every month. As for free users, they can use the tool powered by o4-mini to get up to five answers monthly.  Deep Research has the capacity to analyze websites and various sources to create thorough reports with citations. The company says the tool is "fine-tuned on the OpenAI o3 reasoning model," but the lightweight version is "significantly cheaper to serve."This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/ai/openais-deep-research-tool-is-coming-to-free-accounts-123031773.html?src=rss

Apple plans to dodge tariff impact on iPhones with this major change, source says
Apple aims to make most of its iPhones sold in the United States at factories in India by the end of 2026, and is speeding up those plans to navigate potentially higher tariffs in China, its main manufacturing base, a source told Reuters. Apple is holding urgent talks with contract manufacturers Foxconn and Tata to achieve that goal, said the person, who declined to be named as the planning process is confidential. Apple, Tata and Foxconn did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Apple sells over 60 million iPhones in the U.S. annually with roughly 80% of them made in China. The tech giant is now looking to move the majority of that production to India, the source said. Apple has already stepped up production in India to beat U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariffs, shipping some 600 tons of iPhones worth $2 billion to the United States in March. The shipments from India marked a record for both its contractors Tata and Foxconn, with the latter alone accounting for smartphones worth $1.3 billion, Reuters reported last week. In April, the U.S. administration imposed 26% duties on imports from India, much lower than the more than 100% China was facing at the time. Washington has since paused most duties for three months, except for China. Trump’s administration has since signalled openness to de-escalating the trade war between the world’s two largest economies that has raised fears of recession. The Financial Times first reported about Apple’s plan on Friday. As Apple diversifies its manufacturing beyond China, it has positioned India for a critical role. Foxconn and Tata, its two main suppliers there, have three factories in all, with two more being built. —Munsif Vengattil, Akash Sriram, and Disha Mishra, Reuters

Creating the ultimate indoor garden is easier than ever thanks to innovative planter designs that cater to every lifestyle, space, and level of gardening experience. Whether you’re seeking the hands-off convenience of AI-powered systems, the elegance of designer planters, or the interactive fun of sustainable hydroponics, there’s a solution perfectly suited to your needs. Each of these ten planters offers a unique take on growing greenery indoors, helping you cultivate a lush, healthy environment while minimizing hassle and maximizing joy. From compact microgreen gardens to comprehensive vertical towers, these planters represent the future of indoor gardening, where technology, design, and sustainability work in harmony. 1. Plantaform For those seeking an eco-conscious and efficient way to grow plants indoors, the Plantaform smart indoor garden offers cutting-edge fogponics technology. Unlike traditional soil-based gardening or even hydroponics, fogponics delivers water and nutrients directly to plant roots as a fine mist, ensuring faster growth and more efficient resource use. Plantaform’s egg-shaped design is fully automated, featuring a custom LED system that mimics the full spectrum of sunlight to promote healthy growth in any season. Plant pods are soil-free, keeping things clean and simple, and the system uses only non-GMO, pesticide-free seeds. Integrated app connectivity assists users through every step, from setup to harvest, ensuring a seamless experience even for beginners. What we like Fogponics uses less water than other methods, making it environmentally friendly. Plants develop quickly and without soil, resulting in less mess and maintenance. What we dislike Specialized components may be harder to replace or repair compared to standard planters. The contemporary design may not suit every interior décor style. 2. LeafyPod Bringing the power of artificial intelligence into your home, the LeafyPod AI-Powered Indoor Planter is revolutionizing how we care for our indoor plants. For many would-be gardeners, the struggle lies in keeping track of watering schedules, monitoring soil health, and ensuring each plant’s needs are met. LeafyPod takes the guesswork out of plant care by using smart data and machine learning to understand the unique requirements of the plant you’ve chosen to grow. By analyzing data such as soil moisture, plant response, and environmental factors, LeafyPod automatically dispenses the right amount of water at the right time. All you need to do is refill the water reservoir every few weeks and follow occasional prompts from the device, like moving your plant into better light or replacing the filter. What we like LeafyPod automates watering and monitors soil conditions, making plant care accessible even for complete beginners. The AI adapts to the specific needs of different plants, ensuring optimal growth and health. What we dislike The high degree of automation may take away the enjoyment for those who appreciate hands-on gardening. Users must move the planter to suitable locations for adequate sunlight, as artificial lighting isn’t included. 3. Patella Crescenda For fans of microgreens, the Patella Crescenda self-watering planter is a compact, ingenious device that streamlines the process of growing nutrient-rich sprouts indoors. About the size of two cupped hands, this planter is designed with simplicity in mind. Its self-watering mechanism uses an air vacuum to gradually release water from a bulb into the base tray, keeping seeds moist without any effort from the user. The soil-free design relies on reusable stainless steel plates with slots for seeds, allowing roots to dip into the water below and sprout quickly, often within a week. Patella Crescenda is perfect for those who want a steady supply of fresh toppings for salads, sandwiches, or smoothies without any mess or daily maintenance. What we like Fits anywhere and requires minimal setup or maintenance for quick microgreen yields. Soil-free design keeps kitchens and countertops clean, with easy reuse for continuous harvesting. What we dislike Only suitable for microgreens and small quantities due to its compact size. Not versatile for growing larger plants or a wide variety of species. 4. LG Indoor Planters LG’s foray into indoor gardening blends style and substance, creating appliances that are as decorative as they are functional. The new LG indoor gardening range includes a tall, floor-standing lamp and a side-table-like planter, both designed to double as elegant lighting fixtures. These planters can accommodate up to 20 plants each and are equipped with adjustable-height lighting that ensures plants get the right amount of light throughout their growth cycle. The built-in 1.5-gallon water tank automates hydration, while the LG ThinQ app allows users to monitor and control every aspect of the garden from their smartphone. These planters are perfect for integrating greenery into living spaces where aesthetics matter, like lounges and relaxation areas. They provide both mood lighting at night and concentrated plant lighting during the day, enhancing ambiance and air quality simultaneously. What we like Functions as both a planter and a stylish lighting fixture, maximizing the use of space. Allows for precise monitoring and control via the LG ThinQ app, adding convenience. The focus on aesthetics and smart features leads to a higher cost than standard planters. Some users may find the app features overwhelming or unnecessary if they prefer manual operation. 5. Ecobloom The Ecobloom concept is designed to eliminate the common pain points of indoor gardening—overwatering, underwatering, and pest invasions. This compact, intelligent planter automates watering with moisture sensors and precision drippers, ensuring your plants always get just the right amount of hydration. Artificial grow lights mean you don’t need to worry about sunlight, and a unique built-in insect repellent system keeps your greens safe from unwanted pests without the use of harsh chemicals. The only manual task required is keeping the water tank full, making this pot exceptionally low-maintenance. Ecobloom’s innovative approach makes it suitable for beginner gardeners, busy professionals, or anyone who wants the joys of plants without the stress. What we like Moisture sensors and controlled drippers ensure perfect watering every time. Built-in insect repellent protects plants naturally and safely. What we dislike As a prototype, its final features and availability are not yet guaranteed. Designed for small plants or herbs, it may not accommodate larger indoor plants. 6. Gardyn If you’re looking to maximize your indoor gardening potential, the Gardyn is a game-changer. This innovative planter merges hydroponics with advanced artificial intelligence to create a vertical garden capable of growing up to 30 plants simultaneously, without any soil. The Gardyn system is equipped with two cameras that continuously monitor plant growth and health, feeding real-time data to its AI brain. The tower automatically adjusts water distribution and lighting, simulating day and night cycles with its built-in sunlight-mimicking LEDs. The result? An indoor garden that thrives with minimal user intervention—just fill the water reservoir, add seeds, and watch your kitchen garden flourish. Its sophisticated monitoring means fresh herbs, leafy greens, and even small vegetables can be harvested regularly. What we like It can grow up to 30 plants at once, making it ideal for avid home chefs or families. Watering, lighting, and plant health monitoring are all managed by AI, ensuring consistent results. What we dislike The vertical tower requires significant space, which may be challenging for compact apartments. The advanced technology and high yield come at a steep price point. 7. Totam Planter Introducing the Totam Planter—a modular, self-watering indoor garden designed to elevate your living space. With Totam, you have the freedom to customize your planter to suit your style and needs, making it a truly unique addition to your home. This innovative vertical gardening system allows you to proudly showcase and nurture your favorite plants, whether you prefer microgreens, succulents, edible herbs, flowers, or even small vegetables. The Totam Planter’s modular construction lets you mix and match different components to build your ideal indoor garden tower. You can easily expand upwards by stacking vertical modules, providing ample space for taller or trailing plants to thrive. This flexible approach ensures you can tailor your garden to any space, big or small. What we like Its compact design allows you to grow a variety of plants in a minimal countertop area. Adjustable lighting schedules are easily managed at the push of a button, supporting optimal plant growth. What we dislike Currently, the lighting system does not support Matter or HomeKit integration, limiting smart home compatibility. 8. Turf Hydroponic Planter The Turf Hydroponic System brings a fresh perspective to sustainable indoor gardening by integrating energy harvesting and environmentally friendly materials. This system allows you to grow plants hydroponically—without soil—in any indoor space, making it ideal for those in apartments or homes without outdoor access. Turf’s key feature is its ability to generate energy through sensors that respond to ambient noise and human touch, helping power the built-in LED grow lights. The entire kit is packaged with sustainability in mind, using biodegradable mushroom mycelium for the outer shell and water-soluble paper for seed packaging, all printed with soy-based inks. What we like Utilizes biodegradable and recyclable packaging, promoting sustainability from start to finish. Energy harvesting encourages unique engagement with your plants for a more dynamic gardening experience. What we dislike The interactive approach may not suit those who want a more traditional or hands-off system. Proprietary or specialty components could be harder to find if repairs are needed. 9. Noku Canvas Say hello to the Noku Canvas – a self-watering and modular greenwall system thoughtfully designed to bring the beauty of lush, thriving plants into the very heart of your home. Unlike traditional planters, the Noku Canvas transforms your favorite houseplants into a stunning vertical garden, allowing you to display greenery as living art on any wall. What makes it unique is its advanced self-watering technology. The system utilizes innovative wicking hydroponics, which ensures that your plants receive a steady and consistent supply of water without any effort on your part. This means you don’t have to worry about daily watering routines or the risk of overwatering and underwatering, as the Noku Canvas takes care of your plants’ hydration needs automatically. What we like The modular design allows for complete customization to suit your space and style preferences. Constructed from recycled plastic and natural cork, making it an eco-friendly choice. What we dislike Currently available only as a wall-mounted option, which limits placement flexibility. The range of designs and formats is somewhat limited at this time. 10.
