WWW.SCIENTIFICAMERICAN.COMAncient DNA Reveals Phoenicians’ Surprising AncestryApril 25, 20252 min readAncient DNA Reveals Phoenicians’ Surprising AncestryPhoenician civilization spread its culture and alphabet across the Mediterranean but not, evidently, its DNABy Ewen Callaway & Nature magazine A death mask from the third or second century bc found in the Phoenician trading city of Carthage in what is now Tunisia. Peter Horree/Alamy Stock PhotoAn ancient Middle Eastern civilization that developed an early alphabet spread its culture far and wide—but not its DNA, finds a 23 April Nature study of hundreds of ancient human genomes.Phoenician civilization emerged more than 3,000 years ago, centred around what is now Lebanon, before expanding across the Mediterranean Sea. Middle Eastern Phoenician city-states eventually fell to other groups, but the culture thrived farther west—most notably in Carthage, in what is now Tunisia, until its destruction in 146 BC.Phoenician city-states shared languages—recorded with an alphabet that was a precursor to Greek and Latin letters—religious practices and maritime trading economies. Many researchers have presumed that their inhabitants also shared ancestries connected to the culture’s Middle Eastern origins. On supporting science journalismIf you're enjoying this article, consider supporting our award-winning journalism by subscribing. Instead, Punic people shared an ancestry profile resembling those of ancient inhabitants of Greece and Sicily. Over time, North African ancestry entered the mix—reflecting the rise of Carthage after 500 BC.This unique mixture of ancestries is probably the result of a regular influx of diverse people connected by a “Mediterranean highway” maintained by trade between Phoenician outposts, says Ringbauer. The study identified related individuals found at distant archaeological sites, including a pair of possible second cousins, one from North Africa and one from Sicily. After the fall of Phoenician city-states in the Middle East, people with ancestry from this region might have been cut off from the Mediterranean highway, says Ringbauer. The absence of Middle Eastern ancestry in Punic people doesn’t surprise Pierre Zalloua, a geneticist at Khalifa University in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. “The Phoenicians were a culture of integration and assimilation,” he says. “They settled where they sailed.”Ringbauer would like to know why diverse Mediterranean people adopted Phoenician culture, instead of sticking to their existing practices. “How can there be such a disconnect?” he wonders. “Does this mean Phoenician culture was like a franchise that others could adopt? That’s one for the archaeologists.”This article is reproduced with permission and was first published on April 23, 2025.0 Комментарии 0 Поделились 17 Просмотры

WWW.VIDEOGAMER.COMNintendo Switch 2 predicted to be the biggest console launch in gaming historyYou can trust VideoGamer. Our team of gaming experts spend hours testing and reviewing the latest games, to ensure you're reading the most comprehensive guide possible. Rest assured, all imagery and advice is unique and original. Check out how we test and review games here While the Nintendo Switch 2 was revealed, the console was immediately met with online discourse surrounding its pricing. Despite the price of the console and—more pressingly—the price of software, the new Nintendo console is now expected to be the biggest console launch of all time. With the console’s demand in some regions “far exceeding” Nintendo’s expectations and the console’s hype causing accessories such as MicroSD Express cards to sell out worldwide, the console is now predicted to be the biggest console launch in gaming history. Nintendo Switch 2 is set to be the biggest console launch ever Via Bloomberg, Japan analyst firm Pelham Smithers Associates predicts that the new Nintendo Switch 2 handheld will sell 6.6 million pre-orders globally during its launch period. For comparison, the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 managed to sell 4.5 million units during their first two months of release. “As Japan accounts for a third of global Switch installation base, it implies 6.6 million pre-orders globally,” said Pelham Smithers. While the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2 is muddied due to the constantly changing United States tariff situation, the new Nintendo console is in a much stronger position for launch than the PS5. PlayStation 5 demand was high, but it’s release was hampered by the COVID-19 pandemic, a global chip shortage and a huge scalping problem. With Nintendo incorporating anti-scalping methods, it seems that the vast majority of demand for the console is organic. Despite the online complaints for the new console, it isn’t too surprising to see the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2 eclipse that of the PlayStation 5. "You wouldn't steal a car" anti-piracy ads may have used a stolen font | The anti-piracy campaign that failed its own background checkWTF?! In what must be the very definition of irony, one of the most infamous anti-piracy campaigns from two decades ago may have included a font that was, in essence, stolen. The "You Wouldn't Steal a Car" PSA is still remembered by many people old enough to recall its 2004 launch, but it seems the ad didn't heed its own warning. The ad first appeared in cinemas in 2004 as a joint production of the UK's Federation Against Copyright Theft (FACT) and the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), before expanding to DVDs and Blu-rays. The clip shows people stealing various items, such as a car, a massive CRT TV – which looks particularly awkward – and a DVD. It warns that while most viewers would never commit these crimes, they are comparable to downloading a pirated film. There was also another version that replaced the "downloading" teenager with two girls being offered bootleg discs by a street vendor. The ads only lasted until 2008, but they're remembered by many, especially as they were turned into the "You wouldn't download a car" meme, which some people started believing was the real slogan thanks to the Mandela effect. They were also parodied brilliantly in the magnificent UK show The IT crowd. Now, decades later, it appears that the font used in the commercials was itself stolen. TorrentFreak reports that the ads appear to use the FF Confidential font, which was created by Just Van Rossum – whose brother Guido Van Rossum created the Python programming language – in 1992. However, they really used a different, freely available font called XBand Rough from 1996 that is virtually identical. When journalist Melissa Lewis asked Van Rossum about the two, he said XBand Rough is an "illegal clone" of FF Confidential. // Related Stories "I knew my font was used for the campaign and that a pirated clone named XBand-Rough existed. I did not know that the campaign used XBand-Rough and not FF Confidential, though. So, this fact is new to me, and I find it hilarious," Van Rossum told the publication. By using FontForge on a PDF from the website for the campaign (web.archive.org/web/20051223...); I can confirm that they are indeed using the illegal clone version of the font, rather than the licensed one! [image or embed] – Rib (@rib.gay) April 23, 2025 at 5:13 PM A Bluesky user called Rib used the Wayback Machine to confirm that the XBand Rough font is embedded in a 2005 PDF file hosted on the official anti-piracy campaign website. Van Rossum is no longer the font's official distributor, so he has no intention of pursuing the matter. The licensing is currently handled by Monotype. WWW.NINTENDOLIFE.COMRandom: Masahiro Sakurai Finds Success In Switch 2 LotteryImage: Nintendo LifeIf you've entered the lottery to get a Switch 2 in Japan, then you may well be hearing back from Nintendo relatively soon. Many have been receiving emails from Nintendo to confirm that they've been successful in securing a Switch 2 pre-order over the past day, with one of the successes coming from none other than Smash and Kirby creator Masahiro Sakurai. Highlighted to us by friend of the site and NL contributor Andrew J. Rue, Sakurai tweeted just under three weeks ago that he'd entered the lottery to try and get a new console on launch day, 5th June 2025. And in a follow-up yesterday, he confirmed that he was one of the winners.Subscribe to Nintendo Life on YouTube810kWatch on YouTube Sakurai's surprise is evident on social media, as translated by Rue: "I-I-I…I what…? I won the lottery!!" Rue pointed out to us that Sakurai's success likely comes from the fact that he's pre-ordered the multi-language system, which is the more expensive version of the console in Japan, costing 69,980 yen. There is a cheaper Switch 2 available for 49,980 yen, but this is a Japanese language-only system. Yes, despite being the director of one of the big Nintendo Switch 2 exclusives in Kirby Air Riders, Sakurai has had to join the rest of us in lining up for the new console. No perks there! Although he likely has a dev kit somewhere... Anyway, congrats to those of you who've managed to secure a lottery win in Japan! There's been a bit of chaos surrounding the system over the past 48 hours, with Nintendo warning fans about phishing emails and the My Nintendo Store going down as the lottery opened. TECHCRUNCH.COMGoogle’s AI search numbers are growing, and that’s by designGoogle started testing AI-summarized results in Google Search, AI Overviews, two years ago, and continues to expand the feature to new regions and languages. By the company’s estimation, it’s been a big success. AI Overviews is now used by more than 1.5 billion users monthly across over 100 countries. AI Overviews compiles results from around the web to answer certain questions. When you search for something like “What is generative AI?” AI Overviews will show AI-generated text at the top of the Google Search results page. While the feature has dampened traffic to some publishers, Google sees it and other AI-powered search capabilities as potentially meaningful revenue drivers and ways to boost engagement on Search. Last October, the company launched ads in AI Overviews. More recently, it started testing AI Mode, which lets users ask complex questions and follow-ups in the flow of Google Search. The latter is Google’s attempt to take on chat-based search interfaces like ChatGPT search and Perplexity. During its Q1 2025 earnings call on Thursday, Google highlighted the growth of its other AI-based search products as well, including Circle to Search. Circle to Search, which lets you highlight something on your smartphone’s screen and ask questions about it, is now available on more than 250 million devices, Google said — up from around 200 million devices as of late last year. Circle to Search usage rose close to 40% quarter-over-quarter, according to the company. Google also noted in its call that visual searches on its platforms are growing at a steady clip. According to CEO Sundar Pichai, searches through Google Lens, Google’s multimodal AI-powered search technology, have increased by 5 billion since October. The number of people shopping on Lens was up over 10% in Q1, meanwhile. The growth comes amid intense regulatory scrutiny of Google’s search practices. The U.S. Department of Justice has been pressuring Google to spin off Chrome after the court found that the tech giant had an illegal online search monopoly. A federal judge has also ruled that Google has an adtech monopoly, opening the door to a potential breakup.0 Комментарии 0 Поделились 27 Просмотры
