  • Marvels Old Wolverine fixation fixed the Hugh Jackman casting complaint
    www.polygon.com
Cover art, Old Man Wolverine #50Deadpool & Wolverine co-lead Hugh Jackman is 55 years old, and over the course of his acting career, hes aged like any normal man who happens to be stunningly handsome and absurdly wealthy. That wouldnt be a problem if he was playing virtually any other comic book character in existence. But hes spent nearly 25 years now as Wolverine, the guy whose most notable talents (aside from the whole claws thing) are aging slowly and healing quickly. Jackmans entirely normal age progression has been a sticking point for some fans, whove vocally proclaimed that hes too old to be a plausible Wolverine.Luckily for Jackman and his seemingly eternal passion for this role, Marvel Comics has given him an out. For the past 15 years, the publisher has been obsessed with the idea of an old Wolverine.Jackman, who has played the role since the initial X-Men film in 2000, is probably Marvels most loyal live-action asset. Hes gamely grunted and slashed his way from the franchises early-2000s boom period under 20th Century Fox up through Wolverines latest screen outing, now under Disney. By the end of Deadpool & Wolverine, he and his wisecracking frenemy Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) have more or less entered the far-flung multiverse version of the MCU, meaning theres a chance hell pop up in the next big Marvel Studios crossover event. Avengers: Secret Wars is a definite candidate for a Wolverine cameo even though that film is planned for a 2027 release, a full 10 years after Jackman originally hung up his claws and retired from the role. But Logan a film about saying goodbye to Jackmans Wolverine made it perfectly all right for Jackman to proudly sport some salt and pepper in his mutton chops. The film takes a lot of its notes from one of the most famous Wolverine comics of the last 40 years, Old Man Logan, a self-contained 2008-2009 arc in the pages of the Wolverine comic. In that story, set in an alternate universe in the far future, Wolverine/Logan is retired in a miserable apocalyptic wasteland. The world is ruled by elderly, deranged supervillains. Most of the hero population, including the X-Men, have been wiped out.Its later revealed that Logan killed his fellow teammates while Mysterio was deceiving him with an illusion, a fact that totally dissolved what little faith he had in heroism. So when hes called back into action, hes so emotionally traumatized that, for a while, he refrains from even unsheathing his claws.Though the movie Logan shaves off a lot of Old Man Logans wider Marvel setting details (and cites Charles Xavier as the culprit behind the X-Mens deaths), Logan is faithful to most of the comic arcs pathos. Wolverine has a bottomless backstory in the comics, primarily because his powers allow him to live or have already lived as long as the writers want. But by leaving him at the mercy of his inner turmoil and by slowing down his healing factor, Old Man Logan gets to truly grapple with Wolverines biggest, most recurring issues: his purpose and identity. Is he a killing machine? A teacher? A father figure to a found family? A lost soul doomed to straddle the line between vengeance and mercy? With death coming a little closer to knocking at his door, both Old Man Logan and Logan provide him with a crash-course experience in grappling with these questions, and reaching a conclusion: Though he will likely never see himself as fully good, his purpose ultimately lies in goodness.Old Man Logan writer Mark Millar and artist Steve McNiven didnt invent the idea of aging up a superhero to facilitate a deep dive into the poignancy of their existence: Frank Millers iconic The Dark Knight Returns did the same thing with Batman in 1986. Mark Waid and Alex Ross Kingdom Come offered up an entire aged DC Universe in 1996, and writer-artist Kaare Andrews gave Spider-Man a grim future in the 2006-2007 arc Spider-Man: Reign. But while continuations of the Dark Knight Returns universe are mostly limited to whatever Frank Miller feels like doing with it in his own corner of DC Comics, Old Man Logan wasnt allowed to stay as an alternate-universe look at Wolverines future. Like Wolverine in Deadpool & Wolverine, he was thrust into something much bigger. The comic book Wolverine of Earth-616 (regarded as the central continuity of Marvel Comics and the MCU, most of the time) spent a lot of the 2010s dead. He lost his healing factor to a virus in Charles Soule and Steve McNivens Death of Wolverine series, tracked down the mad Weapon X doctor who created him, then died after the fight. His super-peers did not handle this very well, and X-23 (the Wolverine clone who also appears in Logan and Deadpool & Wolverine) took up his mantle for a bit. But thanks to some multiverse shenanigans in the 2015 rendition of Secret Wars (another Marvel crossover/continuity clean-up effort), a version of Old Man Logan from a slightly different timeline got thrown into Earth-616. There, he wore his cool brown jacket, teamed up with the X-Men, and tried to prevent the terrible future of his own original continuity. This was no brief sojourn. Old Man Logan dropped into various other mutant-themed titles, and his return extended through multiple volumes of the Old Man Logan comic. Volume I ran for five issues, as Brian Michael Bendis took him through the trials of the Battleworld in Secret Wars. A 50-issue Volume II followed, the first half penned by Canadian wunderkind Jeff Lemire, the second by Ed Brisson. Then he took his (for now) final bow in Brissons 12-issue arc Dead Man Logan. And thats not even counting the additional volume of Declan Shalvey and Mike Hendersons Deadpool vs. Old Man Logan, which affirmed that no matter what universe Deadpool and Wolverine come from, theyre pretty much destined to argue, fight, then sorta get along in the end. Far from being a one-off, Old Man Logans new adventure spanned the latter half of the 2010s. Dead Man Logan #6 even features a freshly resurrected Earth-616 Wolverine seeking a bit of advice from his more grizzled counterpart, affirming the latters importance even in the face of the real version.Wolverines Marvel pals didnt seem to regard Old Man Logans run on Earth-616 as much of an oddity. They were pretty quick to embrace him as the real deal, especially since he was able to tamp down some of the angst that made the real Wolverine so consistently prickly. Thats pretty much where we leave the old, but not Old Man Logan old version of Logan at the end of Deadpool & Wolverine: Hes faced some of his trauma and his conviction that hes a bereaved outcast, and hes joined a new found family. The comics made it clear that no one was worried about Logans age in whatever continuity he lands in, and the MCU seems to have followed suit with Hugh Jackman. Both characters become the same thing: a grizzled partner/mentor to a modern set of heroes, one who brings with him a lesson in facing trauma and discovering rebirth. Thats handy to have around in any medium. In short, both the comics and the movies have decided that its fine to just let Logan be Old Man Logan.Jackmans tenure in the role wont last forever. Many of the current crossovers (including Patrick Stewarts Professor X showing up in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Kelsey Grammers Beast popping into The Marvels mid-credits scene) find Disney grappling with the 20th Century Studios-produced Marvel movies that are now under its umbrella, and attempting to retrofit mutants into their gargantuan franchising plans. All signs point to the company eventually wanting an X-Men series of its own to mold, rather than a legacy set of famous characters from a previous corporation. Even in bringing prior Spider-Men to the MCU in Spider-Man: No Way Home, Disney took a second to affirm that Tom Holland, the MCU-specific Spider-Man, is Peter 1.But thanks to precedent comics and Jackmans aggressive portrayal of the character in Deadpool & Wolverine, his age initially the cause of a thousand fan recasting discussions seems to have been tabled as a topic. We dont need a new Wolverine yet at least not because the current one has aged out. Old Man Logan is just as valid a character as any other variation on the guy and can offer emotional perspectives that a younger, reboot-friendly model cant. A few more wrinkles in his brow as he huffs around his fellow Marvel characters arent a cause for panic. If Jackman wants to hop on the Smith machine and wear yellow spandex for a few more years, we dont need to worry about him not living up to some ideal of Marvel youth. Hes as comic-book-friendly a rendition of Wolverine as were ever likely to get.

  • SteamOS Is Coming to Non-Steam Deck Handhelds
    lifehacker.com
PC gaming handhelds are everywhere these days, but none have managed to unseat the Steam Deck. Some, like the Ayaneo Air, are smaller, while others, like the Lenovo Legion Go, are more configurable. Then theres the Asus ROG Ally, probably the closest competitor to the Steam Deck thanks to its smaller form factor and its considerable power bump. Name recognition and aggressive pricing have no doubt contributed to the Steam Decks success despite its generally weaker specs, but its also held a serious advantage in conveniencebut that's changing.Aside from power or build, the chief difference so far between the Steam Deck and competitors has been their operating systems. While most competitors use Windows, Valves system uses SteamOS, a version of Linux that is purpose-built for handheld gaming. It has some downsides when it comes to game compatibility, but it has still given the Steam Deck a serious out-of-the-box edge.Thats why it's surprising to hear that Valve confirmed to The Verge yesterday that its working on supporting SteamOS on competing devices. Referencing a note from SteamOS latest patch, Valve designer Lawrence Yang said, The note about ROG Ally keys is related to third-party device support for SteamOS. The team is continuing to work on adding support for additional handhelds on SteamOS.This is huge news for PC gaming. Its not the first time Valve has mentioned bringing SteamOS to other handhelds, but it is the first confirmation we've seen from the company in a while. Why SteamOS compatability is a big dealWhy the fuss over an operating system? Well, as much as Ive been tempted in recent years to switch from my Steam Deck, urged on by promises of higher resolutions or better frame rates, Ive been unwilling to leave SteamOS behind. Its just that good.Unlike Windows, SteamOS boots directly to your Steam Game library, meaning launching a title is only a tap or two away. It also comes with a convenient quick settings panel built right into the operating system, allowing you to adjust anything from power draw to fan speed without diving through system settings menus. And its smooth as butter to navigate with a controller. It does have its downsides compared to Windowsgames that require anti-cheat arent playable on SteamOS, and some other games might have compatibility issues on a per-title basis (although in my experience, I can pretty much run anything I want, even if the Steam Deck says its not supported). It also has fewer uses as a general computer, even when swapped over to desktop mode, although fan-made utilities have done a lot to bridge that gap.To me, SteamOS a much better handheld experience than Windows, which is difficult to navigate with a controller and usually requires sifting through too many menus and doing more debugging. Quick settings panels are also mixed on Windows, since youre usually at the mercy of whatever proprietary solution your handhelds manufacturer has developed, rather than something built into the operating system. Its unclear when exactly Steam Deck will make its way to rival handhelds, as Yang simply told the Verge the company is making steady progress, but that it isnt ready to run out of the box yet.It makes sense that this isnt a priority for Valve, since SteamOS is one of the bigger draws to its own devices. But at the same time, the company is a storefront first, so its likewise no surprise it would want more people using a Steam-centric OS, regardless of where they play. While you can use SteamOS to play non-Steam games, its certainly less convenient. Having non-Steam Deck owners using SteamOS could improve Steam sales overall. That said, not all of this is so transparently about boosting sales: Yang also told The Verge that Valve is working on implementing dual-booting on its Steam Deck OLED models, allowing you to swap between Windows and SteamOS at will for those times when SteamOS cant run a certain game. Theres no update on the timing for dual boot support, Yang said. Its still a priority, but we havent been able to get to it just yet. That also holds true for the general release of Steam OS 3, which would work not just on handheld machines, but also desktop computers.Note that outside of Steam Decks, its unlikely any devices will ship with SteamOS as the out-of-the-box standard. But for people willing to spend an evening on the install, swapping to SteamOS could make the rest of their playtime a lot smoother.

  • CIA brainwashing experiments helped make Outlast an iconic horror series
    www.engadget.com
The Sleep Room in The Outlast Trials is named after a real-life space at McGill Universitys Allan Memorial Institute in Montreal, where from 1957 to 1964, doctors conducted mind-control experiments on patients as part of the CIAs MK-Ultra initiative. Led by Dr. Donald Ewen Cameron, these tests included electroshock therapy, sensory deprivation and heavy doses of psychedelic drugs. One patient, Linda MacDonald, went to McGill seeking help for symptoms of postpartum depression after giving birth to her fifth child. She was placed in a drug-induced coma for 86 days in the Sleep Room, and records show she was treated with 109 rounds of shock therapy. MacDonald lost her identity, memories and motor skills; she had to be toilet trained all over again.Another patient, Robert Logie, was 18 years old when he went to McGill with leg pain. He ended up in the Sleep Room, where he was injected with LSD every other day for weeks, his syringe sometimes spiked with sodium amytal truth serum and other drugs. A speaker positioned under his pillow played the phrase, You killed your mother, on a constant loop for 23 days. Meanwhile, his mom was alive and well. Logie left McGill with amnesia, insomnia and a painful leg.The old McGill hospital is just two miles away from the Red Barrels offices, where the Outlast games are made. The name of the Sleep Room in Outlast Trials, we took that from McGill hospital, Outlast series writer JT Petty said. In the 1960s, they had the Sleep Room where they would treat trauma with LSD and induced comas. It was insane. And the people who came out of that came out severely damaged, in worse shape than they were before. There are still active lawsuits going on because of these events, Red Barrels co-founder Philippe Morin added. (And hes correct.)Like all of Red Barrels games, The Outlast Trials draws from dark and true stories of government-backed inhumanity, religious manipulation and capitalistic greed, particularly during the 20th century. Trials is a cooperative four-player horror experience where participants, called Reagents, are trapped in the secret Sinyala Facility run by the Murkoff Corporation. The goal is to graduate therapy by completing objectives and surviving monstrous villains in various maps, including an orphanage, courthouse, police station and toy factory. As in the other Outlast titles, gameplay mainly involves running and hiding from prowling, deranged sadists, though this time youre not alone. The first Outlast, it goes back to the oldest games, you're playing hide and seek, Morin said. In Outlast Trials, it's like you're stuck in a haunted house with friends. And its, how do we get out of here? That was the initial premise.Red BarrelsTrials exists in a world familiar to Outlast fans. Its a prequel to the original Outlast, which came out in 2013, and Outlast 2, which landed in 2017. Trials replaces the series camcorder with a pair of night-vision goggles, and the Sleep Room is the games lobby. Here, players can purchase prescriptions for upgrades, arm wrestle other Reagents, customize their cell and prepare for the missions ahead. Bulbous black-and-white TVs are mounted in one corner of each cell, displaying messages like, no religion, and, free yourself, in a jarring rhythm.Trials entered early access in May 2023, went fully live in March 2024 and received its first major DLC drop in July, introducing the docks and a new baddie named Franco Il Bambino Barbi. Franco is a New Orleans mafia nepo baby with a degradation kink and a gun obsession, plus he has a habit of murdering his sexual partners. Hes eager to do the same to the Reagents trapped in Sinyala.Franco joins two other Prime Assets, or bosses, in The Outlast Trials. Theres Mother Gooseberry, a deranged former childrens-show host who carries a duck puppet with a giant dental drill inside its beak, and Leland Coyle, a white supremacist and corrupt police officer with an insatiable desire to torture and kill people with his stun rod. Every enemy in the Outlast series employs a unique brand of violent cruelty, their favored forms of torture shaped by generational traumas and dangerous societal norms. We do a lot of work trying to make the characters kind of iconic and human despite being monsters, and that kind of love for horror characters I feel like you know when youre doing it right, Petty said. I'm a 1980s kid, I grew up on Freddy and Jason and all those guys and it's, I think comfort is the right word. Its easy to see the demented priests, sadistic doctors, demonic cult leaders and free-swinging penises in the Outlast games and write it all off as edgelord shit, nothing more. But especially with McGill hospital looming just beyond Red Barrels front door, the commentary is clear, and this brand of gruesome social analysis was the plan from the start. All the games are about extremists, Morin said. People who take something and just go too far with it, whether it's religion, science, money, weapons, whatever it is.Outlast 2 tells a story about cult members who believe the antichrist is about to be born, resulting in a wave of ritual sacrifice, abuse and mass murder in the Arizona desert. The original Outlast takes place inside Mount Massive Asylum, an even-more-twisted stand-in for the McGill hospital. In the first Outlast, there's a lot about the archetypes of 20th century history, Petty said. Theres a character whos a soldier, theres a character whos a businessman, theres a character who's a priest, representing these big, cultural moments of the 20th century. I dont want to get too grand with it, but there is the notion that everybody's so apocalyptic right now. Like, how did we end up here? I feel like that's the subtext of what Outlast is always about. Who made money getting us here? The original Outlast was a cult hit in 2013.Red BarrelsAs the main writer for all Outlast games, Pettys job is to take the teams wildest, most potentially offensive ideas and make them palatable for a horror audience. He works with motifs of murder, torture, neglect, mental illness, sexual violence, bigotry and religion, and through comedy and hyperbole, transforms them into caricatures of greed, ego and oppression. Theres an undercurrent of humor in the Outlast games, strategically deployed to further highlight the terror. We have to come up with the worst, most horrible, most perverse thing that could possibly happen to you, Petty said. And then like two months later, it feels like, come up with something slightly worse and more horrible. You know, for kids! Morin joked. Later in the conversation he said, The reality is, we know we're not surgeons operating on brains. Were creating entertainment. You need to have fun with it.There are no hard boundaries when the Red Barrels team is brainstorming new characters or themes, but Petty and Morin adhere to the same general wisdom when approaching sensitive topics: Dont punch down.We don't want to victimize people who are already victims, Petty said. We're dealing with a lot of sensitive issues mental illness, sexuality and violence, all of this stuff. And I just want to make sure we're always sympathetic.Red BarrelsThis approach to extremism has resonated with millions of players, allowing Red Barrels to turn Outlast into an enduring horror franchise encompassing single-player narrative games, a multiplayer live-service experience and a graphic novel series over the past 11 years. The first two Outlast games sold a combined 15 million units and pulled in $45 million for Red Barrels, while The Outlast Trials has been purchased by more than 1 million players already. Theres a healthy community of content creators playing and dissecting the games on Twitch and YouTube, too.Supporting The Outlast Trials is a lot of work, especially for such a small team. The prototype alone took two years of conceptualizing and coding, and the project spent six years in development before going live in early access in 2023. As a living game, Red Barrels not only has to maintain the experience they shipped with The Outlast Trials, but players now expect new content, monsters, missions and mechanics on a regular basis. Most online multiplayer experiences that look like The Outlast Trials meaning AAA-level games have teams of hundreds of developers, and many are backed by companies worth billions. Red Barrels has just 65 employees, and 20 of them joined just in the past year. We're now in a war of content creation, Morin said. We have to ship content as quickly and efficiently as possible. And to be honest, were still learning how to do that because a lot of us are used to, once you ship a game, you get a big downtime, conception phase and all that. But there's none of that right now.Red BarrelsRed Barrels is only now expanding because they need people with expertise in multiplayer and live-service design. Morin and Red Barrels co-founders David Chateauneuf and Hugo Dallaire worked at EA and Ubisoft for years before going indie, managing large teams as senior developers. They founded Red Barrels because they wanted to get hands-on with game development again, ideally with a small crew of passionate horror fiends. (Also, Ubisoft turned down all their horror pitches. Thankfully can you imagine if Ubisoft had greenlit the original Outlast? It probably wouldve been called something like Dr. Murkoffs Manifesto and the gore wouldve been dialed way, way down. It mightve given Miles a gun. Maybe, instead of sadistic psychiatric staff, its enemies wouldve been animatronic Rabbids. It couldve gotten aJust Dance tie-in. Truly, the horror.)Nowadays, Morin is doing less and less design as his studio becomes more complex, but hes still involved in the creative process. Red Barrels just recently hired another writer, Jonathan Morrel, meaning Petty is no longer the entirety of the narrative department. The studio has a flat internal structure, where there arent harsh distinctions between roles like level designer and game designer. Were just all designers, Morin said. Its hard to overstate just how small Red Barrels is, particularly considering the AAA quality of the Outlast series.I do remember the moment where, for IT support, I stopped going to one of the company's founders, Petty said. Hugo used to basically be IT for the company, as well as art director, co-founder. And it was pretty recent, right? It was like eight years into Red Barrels where he stopped being the IT guy.Morin added, He just didnt want anybody else to do it.Morin said that larger studios are always sniffing around Red Barrels, looking to acquire its talent and IP, but none of their pitches have looked better than independence so far. Red Barrels ended up creating the original Outlast with personal savings, loans and a $1 million investment from the Canada Media Fund. Even back then, there was an offer on the table from a major company that would have resulted in a few extra months of production time.Red BarrelsBut at that point, we had been working so hard to try to make this game on our own and didn't want to give up our independence, Morin said. We were not ready to do that, we were so close to shipping the game. So we just doubled down and worked our asses off to be able to ship the game without needing extra money. But there were options. So I think it's, Never say never, but up until now, no. We never felt the need to go get more financing to be able to make the games we wanted to make on our own. We'll see if we can keep on doing that. For Red Barrels, the focus right now is The Outlast Trials. There isnt time for anything else but maybe there will be in the future.Ultimately, our goal would be to have two IPs, two projects in parallel, and have them be different enough so that people who need a change of scenery can go from one to another, Morin said. I mean, I love the world of Outlast and the reality is that you could narratively make [the second project] fit inside the same world and just do a different kind of gameplay experience. That could always be done as well. But I think creating an IP is a very hard thing, and so when you have success, you don't want to waste it.The Outlast Trials is available now on PC, PlayStation 4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S.This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/gaming/cia-brainwashing-experiments-helped-make-outlast-an-iconic-horror-series-195055899.html?src=rss
