The latest products released int he second half of 2024 are all Built for Apple Intelligence and every one of the ads for the new iPhones focuses entirely on it. But if you got an iPhone 16 in September, you had to wait for an iOS update to get the first Apple Intelligence features. And even if you got one in December after the iOS 18.1 and 18.2 updates, if you werent paying attention to the new feature cards that pop up after the update, Apple Intelligence isnt running on your iPhones.So if youre wondering why Apple Intelligence is missing from your iPhone, heres how you turn it on.Apple Intelligence: What you needFor starters, youll need a compatible iPhone. Apple Intelligence only works on an iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 15 Pro Max, or any iPhone 16 model.Youll also need iOS 18.1 or laterApple Intelligence features are being released in stages, with even more features coming in later iOS updates throughout 2025. Heres a broad schedule of Apple Intelligence features and when youll get them.Apple Intelligence is also available on any Apple silicon-based Mac or iPad as well as the A17 Pro iPad mini with macOS 15.1 or iPadOS 18.1 or later.Finally, you also need both your system settings and Siri language to be set to a supported language. Right now those are: English (Australia), English (Canada), English (Ireland), English (New Zealand), English (South Africa), English (UK), and English (US). You can also drag a photo of a person to turn them into an illustration.Genmoji: On the emoji keyboard, youll find a new button to the right of the search bar. Tap it and youll enter Apples Genmoji creator, which allows you to make any emoji you want (with some obvious restrictions) and use it just as you would a regular emoji. Once created, itll appear in the emoji list on all of your devices.Image Wand: When in Notes, theres a new tool called Image Wand. When sketching a picture, click the new wand tool next to the ruler and youll be able to turn it into a professional sketch by describing what you want it to be.Visual Intelligence: This ones solely for the new iPhone 16 models. When you click and hold the Camera Control button for a second, youll enter Visual Intelligence, which will let you interact with what the camera sees, whether its a street sign in a foreign language, a restaurant, or a pair of sneakers you want to buy.

    Five big events shaped Microsofts 2024
    This was an important year for Microsoft:it added approximately a half-trillion dollars to its market valuationand cemented its lead as the worlds leading generative AI (genAI) company. But 2024 has also been a transitional one for the company, as the US government increasingly turns its focus on reining in Big Tech.As always, Microsoft was in and out of the news throughout the year (sometimes for good, sometimes not). These are the five most important hits and misses the company faced.Microsoft goes all in on Copilot for Microsoft 365Microsoft became more than a $3 trillion company this year, thanks not to Windows or the cloud its valuation soared because its now an all-out genAI company.This past year, it completed the integration of its core genAI product Copilot into Microsoft 365 (for additional user subscription fees, of course). A rollout that began in late 2023 to larger enterprises continued in early January, whenMicrosoft released versions for businesses of all sizes and for individuals.The results were mixed.I found the technology useful for creating first drafts in Word and PowerPointand a potential big time-saver, although the quality of its writing often left something to be desired. I also found it Copilot had a tendency to hallucinate that is, make things up meaning its output needed to be double-checked. While adept at summarizing conversation threads in Outlook, it wasnt particularly useful in Excel.Presumably, Copilots quality will improve, because so much money is at stake. Think of it this way: at the start of 2024, Microsoft had 400 million subscribers to Microsoft 365. If only 10% of thoseusers subscribe to Copilot, Microsoft could rake in an additional $12 billion a year in revenue.Though Microsoft hasnt released information about the total number of Copilot for Microsoft 365 subscribers, its clear it could become one of the companys biggest cash cows and portends financial good times to come.Blistering security criticism burns Microsoft againThe year brought another serious round of criticism of Microsofts lax approach to security. In April, the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) excoriated sloppy security practices thatallowed Chinese spies to hack into the accounts of high-level government officials in charge of the countrys relationship with China. Among the officials who got burned: US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo, Ambassador to China Nicholas Burns, and Rep. Don Bacon (R-NE).Ablistering 29-page DHS report detailed the companys security failures, and pointed to the cascade of Microsofts avoidable errors that allowed this intrusion to succeed. The report said Microsofts security infrastructure is so weak that it failed to detect the compromise of its cryptographic crown jewels on its own, relying instead on a customer to reach out to identify anomalies the customer had observed.The reports conclusion: Microsofts security is inadequate and requires an overhaul.Microsoft promised it would change. But weve been through this before, and the government hasnt done anything about it in the past. I dont expect this time to be different.Thumbs down on Copilot+ PCsfor nowIn an genAI-driven world, you need a PC built from the ground up to get the most from the technology. Orso Microsoft argued when it unveiled the Copilot+ PC line mid-year. The company might well have a point, but it has yet to prove it.The first wave of Copilot+ PCs were underwhelming and overpriced. Although they had AI coprocessors onboard, its not clear why, because Copilot+ PCs were launched without what the company claimed was the best reason for buying them the Recall feature that was supposed to let you find any file, email, or web site you visited in a snap. That feature was so insecure that Microsoft pulled it before Copilot+ PCs were released.Jeff Pollard, vice president and principal analyst at Forrester,toldComputerworld,I think a built-in keylogger and screen-shotter that perfectly captures everything you do on the machine within a certain time frame is a tremendous privacy nightmare for users. Hes right. Since then, though, Microsoft has reworked the feature, andhas begun offering a public preview of it.Even more confounding:the AI technology on Copilot+ PCs is less powerful than the one on regular PCs, unable to do some basic Windows tasks for you, such as turning dark mode on or off.Microsoft is right that PCs with AI coprocessors are better suited for then rapidly advancing technology than PCs without them. But Copilot+ PCs arent those machines. One day, every PC shipped will likely have onboard AI coprocessor. But were not there yet.The Feds target Microsoft for antitrust violationsUntil November, Microsoft had managed to avoidthe antitrust investigations and prosecutions targeting much of Big Tech. Amazon, Meta, Google and Apple were all slapped with serious actions that threaten the core of their respective businesses. Google, for example, might be split up after the US Federal Trade Commission won alawsuit claiming the company violated antitrust lawby actions it took to protect its search business.Microsoft might get whacked, as well. In late November,the FTC launched a wide-ranging investigation into the companys AI, cloud computing, security and Teams products. The agency is focusing on ways in which Microsoft bundles cloud computing products and Teams with its office and security products, as well as whether its gaining too much market dominance in AI.Its not clear yet whether the FTC will eventually prosecute Microsoft, and whether any action against the company would be allowed to proceed once Donald Trump takes over as president in January. (See below for more about Trump and Microsoft.) But if the prosecution does move forward, it could be as problematic for the company as the Department of Justices Windows antitrust suit in 1998 that sent the company into a 15-year tailspin.Trump wins the presidential electionThe biggest wildcard for Microsoft came late in the year with Trumps election, which has potential long-rangeconsequences for its AI plans, as well as the cloud, Teams, and more. Trump could squashantitrust actions against Microsoft or double-down on them. He could award billions of dollars in government contracts to the company or rescind them. He could use the power of the bully pulpit to badmouth Microsoft or praise it.Theres no way to know what the president-elect might do; Trump himself often doesnt seem to know. With him, everything is personal. Stroke his ego and good things happen. Criticize him and hell loose the power of the government against you.Since his election,most of Big Tech has been busy doing the former. Meta, AI and OpenAIs CEO Sam Altman have all given $1 million donations for his inauguration. Google CEO Sundar Pichai, Google founder Sergey Brin and Apple honcho Tim Cook have had dinners with him. Jeff Bezos has plans to do so soon, and also killed aWashington Postendorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris in the run-up to the election.So far, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has kept Trump at arms length. All the better for him, and for Microsofts culture and values. Doing that has been one of the best things hes done all year. Well have to see whether there will be consequences for it in 2025, or whether Nadella gives in.

    This international surveillance project aims to protect wheat from deadly diseases
    When Dave Hodson walked through wheat fields in Ethiopia in 2010, it seemed as if everything had been painted yellow. A rust fungus was in the process of infecting about one-third of the countrys wheat, and winds had carried its spores far and wide, coating everything in their path. The fields were completely yellow. Youd walk through them and your clothes were just bright yellow, he says.Hodson, who was then at the UNs Food and Agriculture Organization in Rome, had flown down to Ethiopia with colleagues to investigate the epidemic. But there was little that could be done: Though the authorities had some fungicides, by the time they realized what was happening, it was too late. Ethiopia, the biggest wheat-producing nation in sub-Saharan Africa, lost between 15% and 20% of its harvest that year. Talking with farmersthey were just losing everything, Hodson told MIT Technology Review. And its just like, Well, we should have been able to do more to help you.Hodson, now aprincipal scientist at the international nonprofit CIMMYT, has since been working with colleagues on a plan to stop such losses in the future. Together with Maricelis Acevedo at Cornell Universitys College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, he co-leads the Wheat Disease Early Warning Advisory System, known as Wheat DEWAS, an international initiative that brings together scientists from 23 organizations around the world.The idea is to scale up a system to track wheat diseases and forecast potential outbreaks to governments and farmers in close to real time. In doing so, they hope to protect a crop that supplies about one-fifth of the worlds calories.The effort could not be more timely. For as long as theres been domesticated wheat (about 8,000 years), there has been harvest-devastating rust. Breeding efforts in the mid-20th century led to rust-resistant wheat strains that boosted crop yields, and rust epidemics receded in much of the world. But now, after decades, rusts are considered a reemerging disease in Europe. Thats due partly to climate change, because warmer conditions are more conducive to infection. Vulnerable regions including South Asia and Africa are also under threat.Wheat DEWAS officially launched in 2023 with $7.3 million from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (now called the Gates Foundation) and the UKs Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office. But an earlier incarnation of the system averted disaster in 2021, when another epidemic threatened Ethiopias wheat fields. Early field surveys by a local agricultural research team had picked up a new strain of yellow rust. The weather conditions were super optimal for the development of rust in the field, Hodson says, but the teams early warning system meant that action was taken in good timethe government deployed fungicides quickly, and the farmers had a bumper wheat harvest.Wheat DEWAS works by scaling up and coordinating efforts and technologies across continents. At the ground level is surveillanceteams of local pathologistswho survey wheat fields, inputting data on smartphones. They gather information on which wheat varieties are growing and take photos and samples. The project is now developing a couple of apps, one of which will use AI to help identify diseases by analyzing photos.Another arm of the system, based at the John Innes Centre in the UK, focuses on diagnostics. The group there, working with researchers at CIMMYT and the Ethiopian Institute of Agricultural Research, developed MARPLE (a loose acronym for mobile and real-time plant disease), which Hodson describes as a mini gene sequencer about the size of a cell phone. It can test wheat samples for the rust fungus locally and provide a result within two to three days, whereas conventional diagnostics need months.The beauty of it is you could pick up something new very quickly, says Hodson. And its often the new things that give the biggest problems.The data from the field is sent directly to a team at the Global Rust Reference Center at Aarhus University in Denmark, which combines everything into one huge database. Enabling nations and globally scattered groups to share an infrastructure is key, says Aarhuss Jens Grnbech Hansen, who leads the data management package for Wheat DEWAS. Without collaborating and harmonizing data, he says, technology wont solve these problems all on its own.We build up trust so that by combining the data, we can benefit from a bigger picture and see patterns we couldnt see when it was all fragmented, Hansen says.Their automated system sends data to Chris Gilligan, who leads the modeling arm of Wheat DEWAS at the University of Cambridge. With his team, he works with the UKs Met Office, using their supercomputer to model how the fungal spores at a given site might spread under specific weather conditions and what the risk is of their landing, germinating, and infecting other areas. The team drew on previous models, including work on the ash plume from the eruption of the Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajkull, which caused havoc in Europe in 2010.Each day, a downloadable bulletin is posted online with a seven-day forecast. Additional alerts or advisories are also sent out. Information is then disseminated from governments or national authorities to farmers. For example, in Ethiopia, immediate risks are conveyed to farmers by SMS text messaging. Crucially, if theres likely to be a problem, the alerts offer time to respond. Youve got, in effect, three weeks grace, says Gilligan. That is, growers may know of the risk up to a week ahead of time, enabling them to take action as the spores are landing and causing infections.The project is currently focused on eight countries: Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, and Zambia in Africa and Nepal, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Bhutan in Asia. But the researchers hope they will get additional funding to carry the project on beyond 2026 and, ideally, to extend it in a variety of ways, including the addition of more countries.Gilligan says the technology may be potentially transferable to other wheat diseases, and other cropslike ricethat are also affected by weather-dispersed pathogens.Dagmar Hanold, a plant pathologist at the University of Adelaide who is not involved in the project, describes it as vital work for global agriculture.Cereals, including wheat, are vital staples for people and animals worldwide, Hanold says. Although programs have been set up to breed more pathogen-resistant crops, new pathogen strains emerge frequently. It is possible to keep using the sculpting tools to refine the resulting normal map.The update also introduces a new Curvature Surface Influence brush system, which can be used on both high-poly meshes and normal maps.New combined scene exporter unifies meshes and texturesFor exporting assets, Uniform introduces a new combined scene exporter.It can take a scene with multiple objects, UVs and textures at different resolutions, and merge them into a single mesh and texture set with a fixed texel density.Updated 26 December 2024: Sparseal has released Uniform 1.3.The update overhauls the softwares user interface, making it possible to customize it completely by dragging tools and panels around on-screen, as shown in the video above.For previewing assets, the release also introduces a new deferred viewport renderer with path-traced global illumination.New procedural object framework and support for projection paintingThere are also some significant new features for creating assets, including a new system for creating procedural objects.As well as procedural modeling, it can be used for instancing and scattering, making it possible to create motion-graphics-style effects like the scene shown in this video.There is also a new projection painting system, making it possible to paint a texture image onto the surface of a model in a way that will be familiar to users of tools like ZBrush.Other new features include a Manifold solver for trimming meshes, a new Symmetrize node tool, and support for layer visibility.You can find a full list of changes via the link at the foot of the story.Price and system requirementsUniform is compatible with iPadOS 18.0+. Tabourets proposal beat over 100 different submissions in a national competition. Contemporary renovations like this one have been added to Notre-Dame throughout its nearly 900-year history. Voillet-le-Duc himself was responsible for major updates and changes to the cathedral during his time. After the French Ministry of Culture first announced its plans to update the stained glass, over 240,000 people signed a petition against the idea.France National Heritage Commission has argued that replacing the historic windows goes against international heritage guidelines. The 1964 Venice Charter calls for the preservation of original work unless absolutely necessary, and Viollet-le-Ducs original windows have been successfully cleaned and restored since the fire.Ive read about the different opinions of people because I want to understand their arguments and also to take an approach that is open and two-way, Tabouret tells the Agence France Presse. I find it a fascinating debate.Notre-Dame recently reopened this month. Although Viollet-le-Ducs windows will go, most of the historic stained glass windows are back on display, including the iconicrose window.To create the new stained glass, Tabouret is collaborating with Simon-Marq, a historic glassmaker in Reims. Founded in 1650, the studio has restored stained glass at Notre-Dame de Reims following World War II and has collaborated on contemporary works with renowned artists like Marc Chagall and Joan Mir.For her part, Tabouret is excited to leave her mark on history and bring her designs to life.My work had been dedicated to figurative painting and personal subjects, Tabouret tells Artnets Sarah Cascone.
