• Largest Known Private Bathhouse Likely Wowed House Guests in Ancient Pompeii
    www.discovermagazine.com
Before the ash of Mount Vesuvius buried the city of Pompeii in 79 C.E., some of the citys elites would host parties in their own private bathhouse.Researchers from the Archeological Park of Pompeii Parco Archeologico di Pompei announced the discovery of an elaborate bathhouse inside a private home (domus). According to the Archeological Park of Pompeii, this may be the largest bathhouse ever found at the site. The new finding sheds more light on the lives of Pompeiis citizens up until their final moments.Private Bathhouse in Ancient PompeiiArcheologists have been working on this site, which is part of Region IX, for around two years. So far, this region has yielded a bakery, a sacrarium, and a unique black-walled dining room with murals of mythological characters on them, which is believed to portray a Grecian experience. Archeologists also noted that the rooms throughout the house were all painted in elaborate styles, including Second and Third styles, which were popular in Ancient Rome.Connected to the dining room called the black room/hall was the bathhouse. It was likely designed that way so that after guests had been wined and dined, they could then relax in the private spa.As guests entered the bathhouse, it would have been a site to behold. It consisted of several smaller rooms, including a changing room and a hot, warm, and cold room. The pool in the cold room was impressive. It was large enough to accommodate about 30 people and was surrounded by a beautiful peristyle and a porticoed courtyard. This layout resembles the classic Satyricon, a notable Roman work from Gaius Petronius, in which, before a lavish dinner party, the characters bathe in a communal bath.A Grecian SpectacleFrom the style of the house, its clear that the owner was very wealthy; however, archeologists believe that they may have also been prominent members of society. They may have hosted friends and family in this place as a way to show off their status, or perhaps they were part of the local government and used this place for political meetings.Either way, after examining the artifacts left behind, archeologists believe that the owner was likely all about spectacle.Everything was functional to the staging of a 'spectacle,' at the center of which was the owner himself, said Gabriel Zuchtriegel, the archeological director of the Archeological Park of Pompeii, in a press release. The paintings in the Third Style with subjects of the Trojan War, the athletes in the peristyle, everything was meant to give the spaces an atmosphere of Greekness that is, of culture, erudition as well as of idleness.More to DiscoverArcheologists have been excavating Pompeii since the 1700s and are discovering more and more each year. This recent announcement is part of a series of discoveries to come from this region. The BBC reports that within this house, two bodies were also uncovered. One was the body of a younger man, and the other was the body of a middle-aged woman.Archeologists found the man with a set of keys, while the woman was found holding gold coins and with gold and pearl earrings. Each discovery helps tell more of Pompeiis story, as tragic as it may have been. • Cigarettes with less nicotine may help some smokers quit

NewsHealth & MedicineCigarettes with less nicotine may help some smokers quitA new proposal seeks to limit the amount of nicotine in certain combusted tobacco products The U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a rule in January to drastically reduce the amount of nicotine in cigarettes and certain other combusted tobacco products in order to help people stop smoking.SimpleImages/Moment/Getty ImagesBy Aimee Cunningham9 minutes agoIf cigarettes contained very little of the chemical that keeps people smoking, it could help smokers move away from these deadly products.Thats the rationale behind a new rule proposed on January 15 by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which seeks to limit the amount of the addictive chemical nicotine in cigarettes. The reduced-nicotine cigarettes would have less than 5 percent of the amount of nicotine thats generally found in regular cigarettes. The rule would also cap the nicotine in certain other products in which the tobacco leaves are burned.

  • Assassin's Creed Shadows Is Getting Several New Open-World Activities
    www.gamespot.com
Assassin's Creed games usually include a large open world, and Assassin's Creed Shadows is no exception. While there are familiar elements to the travel and exploration abilities in this game, Shadows is also going to allow its two leading characters, Naoe and Yasuke, to take some time to appreciate the beauty of nature by creating art.Ubisoft unveiled this feature during an extended explanation about how the game's exploration mechanics will work. Letting Naoe or Yasuke create art may not give them an edge in battle, but it's an activity that they find rewarding. Yasuke and Naoe will also have their own character-specific activities that they can do outside of quests and missions. For example, Yasuke can find experts who can teach him more about how to use his Kata, which gives his character special attack movies. On the other hand, Naoe's Kuji-kiri meditation will open up more of her backstory.Continue Reading at GameSpot

As their trip wears on, the two are forced to confront the ways theyve grown apart from one another and remember their respective importance in each others lives. From ourreview:The movies comparatively low stakes mostly keep it grounded to a story of two disconnected cousins who both so clearly miss the friendship they had when they were kids, and want to get back to it. David cant understand why Benji isnt growing up in all the ways that David has. Benji cant admit that he feels left behind. All this is set against the backdrop of an effective and delicately handled Holocaust tour that causes everyone in the tour group to react in different, profound, and difficult ways.New on MaxA Different ManWhere to watch: Available to stream on MaxGenre:Psychological thrillerRun time:1h 52mDirector:Aaron SchimbergCast:Sebastian Stan, Adam Pearson, Renate ReinsveSebastian Stan (Captain America: The Winter Soldier) stars inA Different Manas Edward, an aspiring actor wracked with insecurity over his neurofibromatosis. After befriending Clmentine (Laurie Babin), an overzealous fan of Chevalier who wholly believes in his innocence, Kelly-Annes own fascination with the case takes an exceedingly darker and more sinister turn.As Polygons Tasha Robinson writes,Whats fascinating about Kelly-Anne throughout the trial, and her increasingly calm but unnerving behavior whenever she leaves the courthouse, is how little she fits into any of the expected tropes or profiles for a character in her position.Red Rooms biggest mystery isnt whether Ludovic is guilty (though Plante keeps that question for the end as well), its who Kelly-Anne really is and what she wants. Does she have a personal connection to one of the victims, or to Ludovic? Is she just one of those unfortunategroupies who flock to serial killers? Given her clear technological prowess, is she planning (or has she already committed) similar crimes herself? The deliberate, clinical procedural aspects ofRed Roomsleaves conscious space for viewers to speculate about where its all going, right up to a moment of mesmerizing shock.New to rentQueerWhere to watch: Available to rent on Amazon, Apple, and VuduGenre: Period romantic dramaRun time: 2h 16mDirector: Luca GuadagninoCast: Daniel Craig, Drew Starkey, Jason SchwartzmanBased on William S. Burroughs 1985 novella, Queer stars Daniel Craig as American expatriate William Lee a pen name for Burroughs living in Mexico City. After meeting Eugene Allerton (Drew Starkey), a GI turned expatriate, William becomes infatuated with his new acquaintance, sparking a relationship that proves exhilarating, beautiful, and ultimately destructive.Kraven the HunterWhere to watch: Available to rent on Amazon, Apple, and VuduGenre: Superhero actionRun time: 2h 7mDirector: J.C. ChandorCast: Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ariana DeBose, Fred HechingerFollowing in the footsteps ofMorbius andMadame Web, Kraven the Hunter is yet another Sony Spider-Man movie without Spider-Man in it. (And who knows? Thismight actually be the last one!) Aaron Taylor-Johnson stars as Kraven, who in this version gets some animal-like powers after being injected with a serum. Hes also aconservationist and animal lover, instead of a poacher who just wants to go after themost dangerous game. An antihero! From our review:Its a largely joyless affair, and Chandor cant seem to decide on a dramatic or comedic tone, let alone a blend of the two. Taylor-Johnson often stands around delivering lines that seem intended to be catchphrases, but he does so with all the determination of someone who loathes the material. A quipper-hero Kraven is not, and neither is Taylor-Johnson. But then, practically every actor in the cast is entirely checked out. Rarely has a superhero movie featured this many talented performers phoning it in. But with such bland material, can you blame them?Bloody Axe WoundWhere to watch: Available to rent on Amazon, Apple, and VuduGenre: Horror comedyRun time: 1h 23mDirector: Matthew John LawrenceCast: Molly Brown, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Billy BurkeThis irreverent horror comedy centers on Abbie Bladecut (Molly Brown), the daughter of an infamous serial killer who is tasked with completing her first kill as a rite of passage into adulthood. Things become complicated when Abbie befriends her intended target, eventually forcing her to choose between her fathers way of life and her own.Ghost Cat AnzuWhere to watch: Available to rent on Amazon, Apple, and VuduGenre: DramaRun time: 1h 37mDirectors: Yko Kuno, Nobuhiro YamashitaCast: Munetaka Aoki, Mirai Moriyama, Noa GotIf Totoro was a massage therapist with a gambling problem, youd get Anzu. The 37-year-old ghost cat was once a regular house cat who just continued to age and somehow transformed into an anthropomorphic cat. Anzu finds himself in charge of 11-year-old Karin, a surly preteen who doesnotwant to be spending the summer with her grandfather and his weird adult human cat. The two clash, but eventually embark on an adventure into the underworld to break out Karins mother.Ghost Cat Anzu sparkles with wonderful animation, particularly when it comes to the character expression and design. From our review:Ghost Cat Anzuworks best when the mix of the mundane and the mythical is balanced. For instance,Anzu inviting a host of forest spiritsto his temple for a party is a hilarious setup that gives Karin a chance to relate her feelings to the ragtag group. But the eventual journey to the land of the dead ends up dragging and muddling the movies message.
