Big AWS customers, including Stripe and Toyota, are hounding the cloud giant for access to DeepSeek AI models
DeepSeek's AI models have taken the tech industry by storm in recent days.More than 20 big AWS customers have asked Amazon for access to DeepSeek models: internal document.AWS's strategy focuses on offering diverse AI models, unlike competitors that prioritize their own.Big Amazon cloud customers have been pressing the tech giant to give them access to DeepSeek's AI models, the latest sign of the Chinese startup taking the tech world by storm. More than 20 key clients of Amazon Web Services asked the company to make DeepSeek models available through Amazon's Bedrock AI development tool this weekend, according to an internal document obtained by Business Insider. Toyota, Stripe, Cisco, Yelp, and Workday were among AWS customers asking for this access, with many wanting to test and evaluate DeepSeek's AI capabilities internally. Other companies that made similar requests include Mercado Libre and Kellogg, the document showed. An Amazon spokesperson wasn't immediately available for comment on Monday. Spokespeople for Stripe, Cisco, Yelp, Workday, Toyota, Mercado Libre, and Kellogg didn't respond to requests for comment.DeepSeek recently rolled out AI models that are on par with, or better than, some of Silicon Valley's top offerings at a fraction of the cost. Its cheap pricing, strong performance, and compute-efficiency have raised questions about US tech companies' massive spending on competing products.Tech stocks, including Nvidia, Broadcom, and TSMC, plunged on Monday as investors tried to assess the long-term implications of DeepSeek's initial success.Amazon shares dropped early on Monday trading, but rallied during the day to end up 0.2%. The moves highlight Amazon's strategic advantage in the generative AI race. From early on, AWS focused on providing customers with as many AI models as possible through Bedrock, believing that no one model would dominate the market. That's a contrast to other tech companies, such as OpenAI and Google, which have spent heavily on building their own frontier AI models. AWS still has an internal AGI team developing its own AI models, and the company unveiled the latest version, Nova, in December. However, Amazon has mostly prioritized offering a range of other AI models through the cloud. Amazon often makes decisions based on customer feedback, and the company is likely considering making DeepSeek's models available through Bedrock after such a flood of client requests, according to a person familiar with the matter. One AWS employee told BI that the company is not in "panic" mode over DeepSeek like some other tech companies. If DeepSeek's models are good, "we'll just host it on Bedrock," this person said. They asked not to be identified discussing private matters.Do you work at Amazon? What is DeepSeek? Get to know the Chinese startup that shocked the AI industry
DeepSeek is a Chinese AI company whose newest chatbot shocked the tech industry.DeepSeek says its AI model rivals top competitors, like ChatGPT's o1, at a fraction of the cost.DeepSeek's rise has impacted tech stocks and led to scrutiny of Big Tech's massive AI investments. An artificial intelligence company based in China has rattled the AI industry, sending some US tech stocks plungingand raising questions about whether the United States' lead in AI has evaporated. The Chinese startup, DeepSeek, unveiled a new AI model last week that the company says is significantly cheaper to run than top alternatives from major US tech companies like OpenAI, Google, and Meta. Here's everything you need to know about the hot new company. What is DeepSeek?DeepSeek is a Chinese artificial intelligence startup founded in 2023.It's been the talk of the tech industry since it unveiled a new flagship AI model last week called R1 on January 20 with a reasoning capacity that DeepSeek says is comparable to OpenAI's o1 model but at a fraction of the cost.DeepSeek made the latest version of its AI assistant available on its mobile app last week and it has since skyrocketed to become the top free app on Apple's App Store, edging out ChatGPT.Who is behind DeepSeek?DeepSeek started as an AI side project of Chinese entrepreneur Liang Wenfeng, who in 2015 cofounded a quantitative hedge fund called High-Flyer that used AI and algorithms to calculate investments. After buying thousands of Nvidia chips, Wenfeng started DeepSeek in 2023 with funding from High-Flyer.The AI chatbot can be accessed using a free account via the web, mobile app, or API.Why are investors worried about DeepSeek?DeepSeek's R1 model is built on its V3 base model. The company has said the V3 model was trained on around 2,000 Nvidia H800 chips at an overall cost of roughly $5.6 million. And though the training costs are only one part of the equation, that's still a fraction of what other top companies are spending to develop their own foundational AI models. Mark Zuckerberg, for example, announced that Meta plans to spend over $60 billion in capital expenditures this year as it doubles down on AI.According to Bernstein analysts, DeepSeek's model is estimated to be 20 to 40 times cheaper to run than similar models from OpenAI.The relatively low stated cost of DeepSeek's latest model combined with its impressive capability has raised questions about the Silicon Valley strategy of investing billions into data centers and AI infrastructure to train up new models with the latest chips.Nvidia, a company that produces the high-powered chips crucial to powering AI models, saw its stock close on Monday down nearly 17% on Monday, wiping hundreds of billions from its market cap. Other Big Tech companies have also been impacted.DeepSeek has also said its models were largely trained on less advanced, cheaper versions of Nvidia chips and since DeepSeek appears to perform just as well as the competition, that could spell bad news for Nvidia if other tech giants choose to lessen their reliance on the company's most advanced chips. What are tech leaders saying about DeepSeek?DeepSeek's success is also getting top tech leaders talking.Meta's chief AI scientist, Yann LeCun, looked to temper some people's panic over DeepSeek's rise in a post on Threads over the weekend.LeCun said it's not so much that China's AI advancements are leapfrogging ahead of the US, it's more that "open source models are surpassing proprietary ones."Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella also weighed in on X."Jevons paradox strikes again!" Nadella posted Monday morning, referencing the idea that innovation breeds demand. "As AI gets more efficient and accessible, we will see its use skyrocket, turning it into a commodity we just can't get enough of."Marc Andreessen, the cofounder of Silicon Valley venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz said in a social media post that "Deepseek R1 is AI's Sputnik moment," referencing the Soviet Union's satellite that shocked the US and helped launch the space race. How does DeepSeek compare to ChatGPT and what are its shortcomings?DeepSeek says that its R1 model rivals OpenAI's o1, the company's reasoning model unveiled in September.Like o1, DeepSeek's R1 takes complex questions and breaks them down into more manageable tasks.R1's proficiency in math, code, and reasoning tasks is possible thanks to its use of "pure reinforcement learning," a technique that allows an AI model to learn to make its own decisions based on the environment and incentives. Similar to ChatGPT, DeepSeek's R1 has a "DeepThink" mode that shows users the machine's reasoning or chain of thought behind its output.Business Insider's Tom Carter tested out DeepSeek's R1 and found that it appeared capable of doing much of what ChatGPT can. The app looks similar to that of ChatGPT, with a sparse interface dominated by a text box.One of the few things R1 is less adept at, however, is answering questions related to sensitive issues in China. For example, when Carter asked DeepSeek about the status of Taiwan, the chatbot tried to steer the topic back to "math, coding, and logic problems," or suggested that Taiwan has been an "integral part of China" for centuries.

Jurassic World Rebirths Writer Insists Dinosaurs Are Still Fun
Another Jurassic film seemed unlikely before Jurassic World Dominion actually hit theaters in June 2022; it was the third film in the Jurassic World series, following the three in the Jurassic Park series, and felt like an expected stopping point. But Dominion was not good (io9s review called it colossally terrible). Now, the (mostly) beloved dinosaur franchise is getting another chance with this summers Jurassic World Rebirth, directed by Gareth Edwards (Godzilla, Rogue One, The Creator), and written by original Jurassic Park adapter David Koepp. In a new interview with Variety, Koeppwho penned Steven Soderberghs haunted-house drama Presence, which just hit theatersspoke about his return to the Jurassic series after writing 1993s Jurassic Park and 1997s The Lost World: Jurassic Park, both for director Steven Spielberg. The first two movies were two of my favorite experiences ever, the busy screenwriter remembered. And Steven [Spielberg] said, What about starting over? Lets try something all new. I said, Oh, thats a cool idea and then I threw an idea back. Thats it. It caught. You do that all the time with your friends and collaborators: throw ideas back and forth. And sometimes they catch, usually they dont. There is pressure because its going to cost a lot of money and there are going to be big expectations and blah, blah, blah. But there was no pressure at first just the pursuit of our ideas. Though Jurassic World Rebirth is based on an original idea this time, Koepp did go back to his original source materialMichael Crichtons Jurassic Park and The Lost World novelsfor inspiration. I reread the two novels to get myself back in that mode we did take some things from them, he said. There was a sequence from the first novel that wed always wanted in the original movie, but didnt have room for. We were like, Hey, we get to use that now. But just to get back in that head space 30 years lateris it still fun? And the answer is yes, it still really is. Dinosaurs are still fun. Jurassic World Rebirth stars Scarlett Johansson, Mahershala Ali, Jonathan Bailey, Rupert Friend, and presumably dinos galore; it picks up five years after the events of Dominion, and hits theaters July 2. DeepSeek Delivers Mixed Bag of Benefits, Concerns to AI Industry
When talking about technology, pundits often use the word disruptive as a compliment. In the case of DeepSeek, a large language model that is now challenging ChatGPT for AI supremacy, the term carries a mixed message.Financial news about the Chinese LLM delivered a blow to tech stocks for a few reasons. First, the program appears to require less computer processing power than its competitors. Companies like Nvidia had seen their stock prices soar in recent months, because the conventional wisdom said that fueling the AI revolution would require lots and lots of specialized chips like the one the company manufactures. Such stocks tumbled when performance data about DeepSeek was published. It is also being offered for now at least as a less expensive option for users. That could contribute to driving down stock prices of companies like Meta and Alphabet, who are counting on financial returns for their AI investments.Open Source for GoodMohamed Abazeed, a professor at Northwestern University, mostly sees DeepSeeks disruption as a force for good unless youre a stockholder of a company like Nvidia. The main positive, he says, is that DeepSeek is open source, meaning others can play with its code and adapt it to their own specialized needs. It will allow developers to access, modify, and implement the model freely, Abazeed says. This openness is a distinguishing factor from other AI models.Potential Security Risk?Daniel Khashabi, a computer science professor and AI expert at Johns Hopkins University, is less sanguine. He agrees that it grabbed headlines due to its speed and accuracy. But he is suspicious of its Chinese origins. While the model may appear competent based on performance in a few popular benchmarks, it may exhibit various biases and even adversarial behaviors that may not be immediately obvious to most users, Khashabi says. There is a clear security threat here.Khashabi recommends that developers who opt to work with DeepSeek "use significant caution and care." They should closely monitor its output to see that it is following their intended behavior. This is good advice not just for DeepSeek, he says, but for any software developed by a different country that has minimal to no documentation.Article SourcesOur writers at Discovermagazine.com use peer-reviewed studies and high-quality sources for our articles, and our editors review for scientific accuracy and editorial standards. Why We Get Dark Circles Under Our Eyes and How to Treat Them
Having dark circles under your eyes could be a tell-tale sign of several things. They usually appear if youre tired but can also be genetic, or a sign of stress, among others. Dark circles can happen to almost anyone of any age and gender, and there are several ways to lighten their appearance and help them fade. What Causes Dark Circles Under Eyes?Whether youve had a long and stressful week at work or pulled an all-nighter studying for an exam, youve likely experienced dark under your eyes. Dark circles under the eyes usually appear purple, blue, brown, or black, similar to a bruise. While there are several reasons as to why they appear, oftentimes, its associated with being tired. However, according to health professionals at UCLA, besides being an indicator of tiredness, the dark circles under your eyes can also be genetic, a sign of stress, a symptom of a different health condition, or a sign of excessive drinking and smoking.Health conditions that can lead to dark under-eye circles include skin conditions, such as eczema and hyperpigmentation, and respiratory conditions, such as asthma and severe allergies. Poor circulation is another cause. With many of these conditions, the skin is pale, causing the blood vessels around the eyes to appear easier. Then, if you itch your eyes, that can cause the blood vessels to swell or even break under the eyes, giving off a bruised appearance. With hyperpigmentation a condition where patches of skin are darker than others sun exposure can lead to dark circles.Another main cause is aging. As our bodies age, our skin can lose its elasticity and thin out, which causes the blood vessels to appear easier. How to Treat Dark CirclesDepending on the cause of the dark circles, there are several ways to treat or prevent them. Getting enough sleep and staying hydrated is a great start. Those with hyperpigmentation should wear sunscreen daily and sunglasses outside to help prevent darker circles under the eyes. Another treatment for hyperpigmentation could be retinoid creams.Cold compresses or even cold tea bags can also help reduce inflamed blood vessels and puffy eyes. The cold tea bags, which contain caffeine and other antioxidants, can help increase blood circulation. Facials can treat dark under eyes, since they are relaxing and also improve circulation. For a quick cosmetic fix, you can cover the dark circles with makeup to reduce the look of them.If the dark under-eye circles are more prominent, there are other medical procedures such as chemical peels, tissue fillers, and laser therapy, among others. If youre concerned about your dark under-eye circles, ask your doctor or medical professional for advice. Stained Glass Material With Procedural Damage For Castlevania IIIs Environment Remaster
Peter MaiReleased in the early 90s, Castlevania III: Draculas Curse was one of Peter Mais favorite childhood video games on the NES. The opening scene, where Trevor Belmont stands before the abandoned church, left a strong visual impression on the artist. Inspired by the growing trend of video game remasters, he decided to create his own interpretation of this iconic environment. For Peter, this project serves as an opportunity to adapt the workflow of an environment artist for games and gain more experience in concept look development, building asset kits, optimizing model topology, and refining texture procedural workflows in Unreal Engine 5.Peter has finished building the scene and is now focused on texturing, showcasing a newly created stained glass material with procedural damage controls for the windows. He crafted the design using Substance 3D Designer and Photoshop for the decal artwork, with the final material featuring adjustable glass damage built and refined directly in the engine.Peter MaiPeter MaiHere are the concepts of the location made by Peter to help you better understand both the original look and the creative direction behind his interpretation:Peter MaiPeter MaiMore progress on this project with some amazing materials:Peter MaiPeter MaiPeter MaiFind out more about the stained glass window material here, and read up on Peter Mais Castlevania III: Draculas Curse remaster by clicking here. Also, join our80 Level Talent platformand ournew Discord server, follow us on Instagram,Twitter,LinkedIn,Telegram,TikTok, andThreads, where we share breakdowns, the latest news, and awesome artworks.Source link The post Stained Glass Material With Procedural Damage For Castlevania IIIs Environment Remaster appeared first on CG SHARES.
