• Metal Gear Solid Delta trailer leak confirms PS5 State of Play is soon
    metro.co.uk
Fans of the original game are going bananas (Konami)Sony has accidentally shared new details for the Metal Gear Solid 3 remake early, confirming a release date and the inclusion of a fan favourite mini-game.With Microsoft having held its first Xbox showcase of 2025 last month, its looking increasingly likely Sony will soon follow suit with one of its own State of Play presentations.Aside from the fact that Sony typically has one within the first few months of the year, one reliable insider has already claimed it will be taking place as early as next week possibly on Valentines Day (aka Friday).Earlier today though, Sony accidentally shared a new trailer for Konamis Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, which not only confirmed a couple of key details but was clearly being saved for a bigger showcase.Said trailer was uploaded to the games PlayStation Store page alongside an updated description, revealing an exact release date for the long-awaited remake: August 25.The trailer has since been removed and the page now only lists a vague 2025 release window, but you should be able to easily find a re-upload if you know where to look.In addition, Sonys leak gave away that the remake will retain the original Snake Eaters Snake vs. Monkey mode, which served as a crossover with Sonys Ape Escape series where Snake has to hunt down and capture the titular apes. Relax, its not a real gun (Konami)While a welcome surprise for fans of both series, we expect this mode to be exclusive to the PlayStation 5 version of Metal Gear Solid Delta. After all, Ape Escape is a PlayStation franchise and when the original game was ported to Xbox 360 the Snake vs. Monkey mode was removed.More TrendingThe Snake vs. Monkey mode was also omitted from the Nintendo 3DS remake and subsequent multiplatform re-releases of Metal Gear Solid 3. No doubt because Sony didnt want its Ape Escape characters featured on rival platforms.Between the trailers removal, and that it was specifically tied to the PlayStation platform, this certainly suggests that it was intended to debut at an upcoming State of Play. Its not the only bit of recent evidence either. Earlier today, people spotted a new listing for PlayStation 5 exclusive Death Stranding 2 on the South Korean age ratings board, which should mean developer Kojima Productions is gearing up for a release. On top of that, Hideo Kojima himself took to his X account yesterday to tease he was putting together a new trailer for something. While it could very well be for one of his other projects, like Xbox title OD, Death Stranding 2 is the most likely candidate, since its meant to be coming out this year. With Metal Gear locked in, what else has Sony planned for its next State of Play? • An Update to Old ICE Press Releases Makes Ancient Busts Look Brand New to Google
    gizmodo.com
By Matthew Gault Published February 6, 2025 | Comments (1) | The New York City Fugitive Operations Team, joined by DHS Secretary Kristi Noem, conducted targeted enforcement operations on January 28, 2025, resulting in the arrest of an illegal Dominican national. ICE photo. A search for ICE operations or ICE raids on Google gives back a staggering amount of returns. While its true that ICE has been busy since Trump took office, Google would have you believe that it did more than 300 busts on January 24, 2025, just four days after Trump took office. However, clicking through to the release itself often reveals a raid that took place years ago, some as far back as 2008. The results are most striking when you search for a specific state. Looking at Texas, Google tells me that ICE executes federal criminal search warrant in North Texas on January 24. Click through and the story is from 2019. Another, also dated in January, tells me that South Carolina will be getting additional benefits and support from ICE. Click through and its from 2011. Looking for raids in Nebraska, Google tells me that ICE published a press release about the arrest of 44 people it swept up in an operation on January 24, 2025. It happened in 2008. As first reported by The Guardian these old stories have been pushed to the top of Google search results, mixing with the very real stories of recent ICE raids and operations across the country. A closer look at the old ICE press releases shows that each got a small update around the 24th of January. Sometime on that date, each story got a red-tinged banner at the top indicating it had been archived. In an effort to keep ICE.gov current, the archive contains content from a previous administration or is otherwise outdated, the banner says. This information is archived and not reflective of current practice. Theres also a small note at the bottom of each page that says it was updated on January 24, 2025. Looking at the archived version of the stories on the Wayback Machine reveals that the banner and date werent present on the press releases on January 23rd. Thats all well and good, websites mark old stories all the time to indicate that theyre old. Attached to the new banner is also a new bit of HTML on each old release. Updated: <time datetime=2025-01-24T15:28:00-05:00 title=01/24/2025>01/24/2025</time>, which would make Google see the stories as recently changed. Google weighs recency when it ranks stories in search results, but its not the only factor nor the determining one. However, its confusing to search for information about current ICE raids and see old press releases dated January 24, 2025, in a Google result, with no indication its an old story. At first blush, it looks like ICE is juicing public perception by updating old stories with new HTML. The truth is probably stupider. Looking at the HTML for these stories in the Wayback Machine shows that theyve been edited before in the same way, on November 18, 2024. Also, this happened to every single ICE press release, not just those about arrests. Stories about ICE-related COVID-19 protections, I-9 policies, and responses to old Washington Post stories are mixed in.I went back through the HTML of old press releases from other government websites, those that still exist. Old releases from the Department of Defense havent been updated at all. Old Department of Labor press releases do have a banner marked January 20 that indicates they may contain outdated information but theres no timestamp in the HTML, not even one from when they were first published. Department of Agriculture press releases, like those for the Pentagon, havent been altered in any way. A site specific search of www.ice.gov for Updated: 01/24/2025 returns more than 300 results. Many of these are old raids, some decades old, and now theyre mixed in with the very real news of the current arrests and dated in Google search as if they happened four days after Trumps inauguration. In some cases, these results are buried deep beneath the churn of local news. In other cases, theyre the first result at the top of the page. Its confusing. The mix of old and new information, free of context, contributes to the breakdown of the information space were all experiencing. As Musk roots through the federal government and Trump suggests even more grand and bizarre policies, its important to be able to reliably hunt for current news. ICE, and Googles systems, have made it hard to do that. The explanation here is very straightforward: the website in question added an archived content bar to many of its press releases from 2024 and before (on a variety of topics), which is why the dates were updated in Search, as they were on other search engines as well. Our systems are not designed to boost a pages ranking simply because a timestamp is updated, and when people do these Searches on Google, they find a range of sources including recent news articles, a Google spokesperson told Gizmodo.Daily NewsletterYou May Also Like By Passant Rabie Published February 6, 2025 By Matt Novak Published February 6, 2025 By Lucas Ropek Published February 5, 2025 By AJ Dellinger Published February 5, 2025 By Matt Novak Published February 5, 2025 By Passant Rabie Published February 5, 2025

  • Caligulas Secret Garden Found: A Glimpse into the Roman Emperors Extravagance
    www.discovermagazine.com
Deep beneath the streets of Rome near the Vatican, overlooking the banks of the Tiber River, Italian archaeologists have uncovered a hidden gem of Roman history Caligulas secret garden. This 2,000-year-old marvel, buried for centuries, offers a rare glimpse into one of Rome's most infamous rulers. Known for his excesses and controversial reign, the discovery of Caligulas Garden not only illuminates his world but also sheds light on the opulence of ancient Roman life.Read More: 5 of the Most Ruthless Rulers in Ancient HistoryWho Was Caligula?Born Gaius Julius Caesar Augustus Germanicus in A.D. 12, Caligula rose to power in A.D. 37 as the third Roman emperor. Nicknamed Caligula, meaning little boots, after the miniature soldier footwear he wore as a child, he is one of the most debated figures in Roman history. Early accounts describe his early rule as promising, but his reign quickly turned notorious. Stories of tyranny, extravagant spending, and bizarre behavior have cemented his legacy as a symbol of decadence and madness. He is said to have declared himself a living god, squandered the empires wealth on lavish projects, and engaged in acts of cruelty and debauchery. Strange anecdotes, like appointing his horse Incitatus as a priest or consul, further reveal the extent of his eccentricity. However, some historians argue that these tales may have been exaggerated by political enemies, particularly after his death.Incitatus (Credit: Sammy33/Shutterstock)The Discovery of Caligulas GardenNestled near the foundations of what is now the Vatican, the discovery of Caligulas garden represents an important find for archaeologists. The site was part of a pleasure garden complex thought to be owned by the emperor, which is supported by the writings of Philo of Alexandria. He tells of how he and his delegation were received by Caligula in A.D. 40 at a vast garden overlooking the Tiber River. The similarity between the remains found and the description of the Alexandrian historian suggest that the recently excavated garden is the site of the meeting, according to a statement from the Italian Ministry of Culture. The ruins, which were unearthed by construction crews working on a new overpass at Piazza Pia in Rome, include a travertine wall, the foundations of a colonnaded portico, and a large open garden area. The archaeologists also uncovered a lead water pipe with the inscription: C(ai) Csaris Aug(usti) Germanici, which researchers determined the translation to Gaius Caesar Augustus Germanicus, or Caligula. In addition to the structures and the lead water pipe, archaeologists unearthed slabs of Roman-era pottery and terracotta plates depicting mythological scenes, which likely adorned rooftops or garden structures. Read More: The Hierarchy of the 1,200-Year-Long Roman EmpireThe Importance of Caligulas GardenThe unearthing of this garden sheds a bit of light on the personal life of a ruler often remembered for his darker deeds. It also demonstrates his and the Romans deep appreciation for nature and aesthetics. The garden likely wasnt only a display of wealth it was a place of respite. However, lavish gardens like these were also regularly used to project power and divine favor, possibly reinforcing the emperors self-image of a god-like figure. How Did Caligula Die?Caligulas reign came to an abrupt end on January 24 in A.D. 41, when he was assassinated by members of the Praetorian Guard. Troubled and concerned by his erratic behavior, financial mismanagement, and disregard for traditional Roman values are thought to have fueled the plot against him. By some reports, he was killed alongside his wife and baby daughter. What the Garden Tells Us About Roman SocietyThe discovery of Caligulas Garden offers a fascinating glimpse into the lives of Romes elite. These gardens werent just places to admire exotic plants they were centers of power, entertainment, and social gatherings. Emperors and aristocrats used them to display their wealth, host lavish events and even conduct political business in locations that showcased their status and power. By studying the remnants of spaces like this, archaeologists can gain deeper insight into the cultural and social priorities of the ancient Roman elite, revealing how luxury and influence were intertwined in their daily lives.Article SourcesOur writers at Discovermagazine.com use peer-reviewed studies and high-quality sources for our articles, and our editors review for scientific accuracy and editorial standards. • Border collies out-sniff some hunting dogs in scientific smell competition
    www.popsci.com
Dogs are well-known for their keen sense of smell, but how does this sniffing ability differ between various breeds? In some new research, border colliesa herding breedactually outperformed some types of hunting dogs in scent detection. The findings are detailed in a study recently published in the journal Scientific Reports.Dogs devote a lot of brain power to sniffing out and interpreting smells. They have over 100 million sensory receptor sites in their nasal cavity and bloodhounds even have 300 million. By comparison, humans only have six million. The region of the canine brain that is devoted to analyzing odors is roughly 40 times larger than the comparable part in our brains. Some scientists estimate dogs can smell anywhere from 1,000 to 10,000 times better than humans. For this new study, a team of ethologistswho study animal behaviorfrom Etvs Lornd University in Budapest, Hungary was looking for a more comprehensive understanding of dogs scent detection capabilities. They also were also curious whether breed group, breed, training level, and dog personality influences their performance. They recruited 551 dogs (524 family dogs and 27 explosive detection dogs). To test the dogs, the authors used the Natural Detection Taska search test that had previously developed for use in wolves. The dogs had to find a dog treat that was hidden in a line of pots. No special training was necessary, since this test works by leveraging the dogs natural motivation to get to food. The team used three tasks of various difficulty. The first level was a pre-test to ensure that they understood the task, were motivated by food, and did not rely on other problem solving methods like digging. The containers all had an open top with no lid and served as a control. In the second level, the containers were covered with lids that had five tiny holes. The third level used containers that were completely covered without any holes. Earlier studies suggested that those containers were not exactly airtight and some smells would get out.During the test, a team member who was unaware of the location of the hidden food observed if the dog spontaneously indicated a pot by licking it, placing a paw on it, or poking at the pot with their nose. The dogs choice was considered correct if it indicated the baited pot within the allotted amount of time. They found that border collies were more successful than golden retrievers, Hungarian/German vizslas, and basset/bloodhounds. Traditionally, these breeds have been chosen for hunting which requires that dogs use their sense of smell to find various targets. However, beagles found the hidden food quicker than border collies, basset/bloodhounds, golden retrievers, Labradors, and cocker spaniels.[ Related: Dogs sniff out two new species of truffle. ]The findings revealed that different breeds exhibited varying levels of olfactory success, study co-author and ethologist Attila Salamon said in a statement.According to Salamon, breed-specific traits appear to be more influential than characteristics of groupingsor breeds that are selected to perform a specific task, like hunting or herding, or cooperation. Dogs with higher responsiveness-to-training personality scores were also more successful, regardless of breed. Surprisingly, the dogs with more advanced training were not more successful and completed the successful searches at a slower pace.We revealed that, in addition to a dogs olfactory ability, what genetic and environmental factors, and their possible interactions, affect dogs success in even such a simple task, study co-author and ethologist Mrta Gcsi said in a statement. This study may help to better understand the role of these factors and confirms that the Natural Detection Task is a useful tool for selecting young or inexperienced dogs for search work. The post Border collies out-sniff some hunting dogs in scientific smell competition appeared first on Popular Science.

  • Sleeping pills may have unexpected effects on the snoozing brain
    www.sciencenews.org
So many of us struggle to fall asleep and stay there through the night. About a third of U.S. adults arent sleeping enough. Teenagers sleep is even worse; 8 in 10 teens are sleep deprived. Our collective exhaustion isnt good for us. Lack of sleep can come with a range of health problems. Our immune systems, hormones, hearts maybe all the bodys major systems are influenced by sleep. In the brain, our memory, creativity and ability to learn are, too.But for something thats so entwined with our health, the actual jobs of sleep are still, in many ways, a mystery. Scientists have tons of ideas: Perhaps sleep is for rifling through memories, picking out the important ones. Or maybe its a quiet, still time for growing bones in children. Or maybe its a time to let the brain loose on whatever problem vexed you that day. (One delightfully myopic theory posits that sleep, especially the rapid eye movement stage, is for squeezing fluid around the eye to keep it lubricated.)Figuring out why we sleep has puzzled scientists for as long as the question has existed. Its like following hundreds of disappearing breadcrumbs on paths through a forest of trees that keep shifting spots, only to realize youre standing alone in only your underwear. Oh, and you forgot to study for the test.Given this hazy scientific landscape, its no surprise that efforts to help the sleep-deprived catch some zs might fall short or have unintended consequences. Thats clear from a new study of the sleep medicine zolpidem.Zolpidem, sold as Ambien, messes with yet another possible job of sleep housekeeping. Every 20 seconds or so, a wave of cerebrospinal fluid pulses through a persons sleeping brain. Scientists suspect that these rhythmic pulses clear out waste products, including the sticky proteins that accumulate in Alzheimers disease. This brain wash is sort of like running the dishwasher overnight, says neuroscientist Maiken Nedergaard, who helped discover the system. Washing up isnt a flashy job, but an important one that hasnt been fully appreciated. The whole housekeeping function of sleep has been ignored for many, many years, she says.Mice on zolpidem fell asleep faster and slept deeper than naturally sleeping mice, says Nedergaard, of the University of Rochester in New York and the University of Copenhagen. But they had less power washing, her team reports in the Feb. 6 Cell.Scientists dont yet know if this also happens in humans, or what the consequences of this weaker wash cycle might be. But the results point out potential pitfalls in our attempts to kick-start sleep.Zolpidem targets GABA, a chemical messenger that sends hush signals. That means its shutting down everything in your brain, says sleep scientist Robert Stickgold of MIT. Its a powerful, blunt-force tool that doesnt need to know why you cant sleep. Pain, stress, restless legs these can all lead to insomnia. Ambien doesnt care, Stickgold says. Ambien is just going to hit you in the back of the head with a sledgehammer.Ambien-assisted sleep may be justified for short stretches, Nedergaard says. But long-term use brings considerable side effects. The brain-cleaning disruption may be one. We need a new sleep aid that gets people to sleep but preserves these oscillations, she says. But for people in dire sleep straits, blunt force sleeping pills are better than no sleep at all. I tell people sleeping meds are terrible things, Stickgold deadpans. You should never take them. Unless you cant sleep well without them.Sponsor MessageScientists arent just trying to help people sleep better. Theyre also pushing the limits of what sleeping brains can accomplish. Researchers can instruct a sleeping person to dream about particular objects like trees, sharpen their piano playing skills and maybe even learn a new language. These feats are impressive but they may involve trade-offs, Stickgold warns. If youre forcing the sleeping brain to do something specific, then youre getting less of something else, he says. We have to assume that something else is there for a reason.Humility is the way forward to understanding and tinkering with a system as complex as the sleeping brain. It is arguably impossible for us to know everything, Stickgold says.So maybe we should not expect one simple answer to the question of why we sleep. It could be for growing bones, sharpening memories, cleaning the brain and many more tasks. In the years to come, we will no doubt find new clues about how sleep keeps our bodies and minds healthy. And these scientific breadcrumbs may lead us to yet more mysteries.
