Source:Richard H. Driehaus PrizeLiam OConnorArchitect Liam OConnor has been named the 2025 winner of the Richard H. Driehaus Prize at the University of Notre Dame. The prize, established in 2003, is awarded annually to an architect whose work is considered to embody classical and traditional principles in contemporary practice.OConnor is known for his work on national memorials in the UK and abroad. His best-known projects include the RAF Bomber Command Memorial at Hyde Park Corner, the British Normandy Memorial in France, and the Armed Forces Memorial at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire. The British Normandy Memorial, inaugurated on 6 June 2021, overlooks Gold Beach, one of the five D-Day landing sites of the Second World War. The project commemorates 22,442 British service personnel who lost their lives during the campaign to liberate Europe. The site includes 160 limestone Doric columns inscribed with the names of the fallen, with the wider masterplan set across 60 acres. The masterplan envisages future planned structures to be built using 3,500 tonnes of Burgundy limestone and hundreds of sustainably felled oak trees.Source: ShutterstockBritish Normandy MemorialThe RAF Bomber Command Memorial incorporates riveted metal from downed aircraft into the roof of its Doric pavilion, an approach the jury citation states is intended to memorialise the aircraft central to the history of the pilots it commemorates. The memorial, unveiled in 2012, has been the subject of controversy due to the role of Bomber Command in the strategic bombing campaigns of the Second World War, which resulted in significant civilian casualties in German cities.Source: ShutterstockRAF Bomber Command MemorialThe ethical debates surrounding these operations contributed to delays in establishing a dedicated memorial, with public and governmental reluctance to fund the project. Since its inauguration, the memorial has been vandalised on several occasions, reflecting the continuing sensitivities around Bomber Commands legacy. Some have also noted the extensive destruction of European architecture during the war as a result of these bombing campaigns.OConnor was also the architect of the Memorial Gates on Constitution Hill, which commemorate the service of Commonwealth soldiers, and the Victoria Cross and George Cross Memorial at the Ministry of Defence building in London.Alongside his work on public memorials, OConnor has designed private and commercial buildings, often in classical styles. He worked on the Orangery New Building at Kensington Palace, a Portland stone and brick extension to the Grade I-listed Orangery attributed to Vanbrugh and Hawksmoor. He was also involved in the restoration and extension of the Magazine Building in Hyde Park Gardens, which was converted into an exhibition facility for the Serpentine Gallery in collaboration with Zaha Hadid Architects. His residential projects include a recently completed house in Belgravia, reportedly one of the largest new houses built on the Grosvenor Estate in a century.OConnor established his practice, Liam OConnor Architects and Planning Consultants, in 1989. His early work included competition-winning schemes for urban masterplans in Brussels and Warsaw. Between 1995 and 1997, he served as a special adviser for architecture and urban design to the then Secretary of State for the Environment, John Gummer. The Richard H. Driehaus Prize has beenawarded annually since 2003. Past winners include Robert A.M. Stern (2011) and Michael Graves (2012), whose work is associated with American postmodernism and neoclassical architecture.Demetri Porphyrios (2004) and Quinlan Terry (2005) are among the British architects to have received the prize, both known for their focus on contemporary classicism.More recent recipients include Robert Adam (2017), Ben Pentreath (2023) and Peter Pennoyer (2024), both known for their work in classical and vernacular architecture. Rob Krier (2022) was cited for his work on urban theory and traditional urbanism, while Sebastian Treese (2021) has focused on classical and sustainable residential design in Germany.Other winners include Ong-ard Satrabhandhu (2020), known for his work in Thai traditional architecture, and Abdel-Wahed El-Wakil (2009), whose practice has focused on Islamic architecture and the revival of traditional building techniques in the Arab world. The Driehaus Prize will be formally presented at a ceremony in Chicago later this year.>> Also read:Aga Khan dies aged 88: champion of Islamic architecture and cultural heritage

  • BDP leads urgent call to government over visa salary thresholds
    www.architectsjournal.co.uk
In a letter to the Department for Education, the practice says the hike in the required minimum salary introduced last year creates insurmountable challenges for [many international] graduates to progress professionally and qualify as architects. The letter is backed by architects from firms including Allies and Morrison, Hawkins\Brown, HTA and Chapman Taylor.BDP insists that the 45,900 salary threshold is unattainable for many aspiring architects, and risks undermining the diversity, innovation and global reputation of the UKs architectural profession.AdvertisementThe letter, sent yesterday (6 February), is addressed to Seema Malhotra, the minister for citizenship and migration at the Home Office and minister for equalities at the Department for Education. It was signed off by BDPs global head of education, Sue Emms. Its 17 other signatories include Rachel Haugh, founding partner at SimpsonHaugh, Claire Hodder, managing director at Hodder+Partners, Ross Ogilvie, director at Cartwright Pickard Architects, Jo Bacon, managing partner at Allies and Morrison, Carol Lees, partner at Hawkins\Brown, Caroline Dove, partner at HTA and Catalina Ionita, senior architect at Chapman Taylor.Changes to the skilled worker visa requirements nearly doubled the minimum salary requirement for foreign workers when they were introduced last April from 26,200 to 38,700.The minimum salary threshold for architects increased to 45,900, and architecture was removed from the Immigration Salary List, a list designed to combat occupational shortages which had previously allowed firms to hire foreign workers on salaries 20 per cent less than the going rate.BDP says the hikes have scuppered the aspirations of many of the international students employed in the UK as architectural assistants [who] have made significant sacrifices to study and work here, often leaving behind established lives and careers in their home countries.AdvertisementThe practice pointed out that the average salary for newly qualified architects, as set out in the RIBA Salary Guide, is 36,500 well below the 45,900 threshold and that lower quartile salaries are around 33,000.The letter argues: Even in London, where salaries are typically 10 per cent higher than the national average (38,000), many architects only reach the new threshold after five years or more of post-qualification experience. Outside London, it is often unattainable, even for associate-level roles.BDP said this disconnect between visa salary thresholds and industry realities is having a direct impact on students and practices, creating a systemic issue that risks excluding talented individuals from pursuing a prosperous career, and diminishing the UKs ability to attract and retain global talent. The practice told the AJ that, as the UKs largest employer of architects, it had a number of staff that had been affected by the changes. An anonymous BDP employee, told the AJ that, despite sitting most of his Part 3 exams, he couldn't finish the qualification and become an architect due to the salary threshold hike. The employee said he was really shocked and sad about the change, adding: I was hoping that, all being well, by the time I started doing my Part 3 and needed to switch my visa [to a skilled worker visa], I would be able to comfortably do it based on the previous salary threshold. He said that in order to stay in the UK and work in architecture, he would need to remain as an architectural assistant for four years, after which point he could apply for indefinite leave to remain. He added: I'm going to potentially see generations of people of people coming into the office, doing their Part 3. And he said that, in lieu of qualifying, he was anxious to explore opportunities for interesting projects, to help him to not feel like I'm stuck, or like Im not progressing.BDP is urging the government to take action by reinstating architecture on the Immigration Salary List. This would recognise it as a profession essential to the UKs global competitiveness and creative industries by reducing the salary threshold for architects to align with actual market rates as outlined by professional bodies such as RIBA, and by establishing transitional protections for international graduates already in the UK and affected by the rules, to allow them to qualify.2025-02-07Anna Highfieldcomment and share

  • Map Your Hikes, Running Routes and More With This iOS Feature on iPhone
    www.cnet.com
Apple released iOS 18.3 in January, and that update brought a few bug fixes and improvements to your iPhone. But when Apple releasediOS 18in September, that update made some improvements in its Maps app, which now lets you plan a walking, running or hiking route.Creating a custom route is great for planning a hike or other outdoor activities, and it can keep you on track so you don't get lost. This feature can also tell you how far a custom route is, as well as what your elevation is throughout your route. If you're in Denver, I imagine it just says, "Up there."Read more: Everything You Need to Know About iOS 18Here's how to create your own custom route in Apple Maps on your iPhone.Make a custom route on Apple Maps1. Open Maps.2. Long press where you want to start your route to drop a pin.3. Tap More.4. Tap Create a Custom Route. From here you have to plot your route by tapping around your map. You can tap intersections and landmarks like restaurants and shops and the app will start mapping your route. You can also tap intersections and unmarked locations on your map for a more granular approach to creating your route. You don't have to tap a location near your last route point, either. After you tap Create a Custom Route, you can tap a location miles away and Maps will create a route for you. It's important to note that if you tap a location miles away from where you start your route, Maps will find a path that doesn't involve busting through walls like the Kool-Aid man. In that regard, creating a route is just like getting driving directions on Maps. Apple/CNETWhile creating your route, Maps will also give you three route options: Reverse, Out & Back and Close Loop. Reverse flips your route so where you initially started is now where your route ends. Out & Back maps your route on top of itself so you start and end where you began in a single path. Close Loop also ends your route where you started but for routes that are circular.Once you've created your route, tap Save and you'll be asked to name your route. Then tap Done. Maps will also download your custom route to your iPhone, so you won't have to worry about losing reception, especially if you're hiking out in the wilderness.Where to find your custom routeAfter you've saved your custom route, it will be moved to your Library in Maps. Here's how to access it. Tap this to find your saved routes. Apple/CNET1. Open Maps.2. Tap Places, Guides and Routes beneath the search bar in Maps.3. Tap Routes.4. Plans for a Magic: The Gathering movie and TV series are already afoot, Deadline reported, though details for now remain thin on the ground. "This is an exciting and complementary partnership, uniting one of the world's most iconic brands with a powerful and proven steward," said Hasbro film boss Zev Foreman. "Magic: The Gathering has inspired decades of epic world-building and creative storytelling. It is a perfect match for Legendary's diversified approach to marquee IP, and we are excited to work together to build a whole new Magic: The Gathering universe."Legendary is no stranger to video game adaptations, having previously been involved in the Warcraft movie and Pokmon: Detective Pikachu, as well as the upcoming A Minecraft Movie."We pride ourselves on being thoughtful caretakers of singular, beloved IP, and no property better fits that description than Magic: The Gathering," Legendary chairman of worldwide production Mary Parent added. "Alongside the fantastic Hasbro team, we look forward to creating a multimedia universe that thrills longstanding fans and creates a broad wave of new ones."When exactly we'll see anything from the Magic Cinematic Universe release is another question, however. And what about Magic's own big crossovers, which have seen everything from Fortnite to Fallout and Doctor Who turn up as collectible trading cards? Could some of those turn up also?

  • Keep Driving: what's a roguelike if not a junky old car with a decent FM radio?
    www.eurogamer.net
Keep Driving: what's a roguelike if not a junky old car with a decent FM radio?Cardigan, but thanks for asking!Image credit: YCJY Games Feature by Christian Donlan Contributing Editor Published on Feb. 7, 2025 When I was younger, platformers were the dominant genre, so whenever an idea came along that needed turning into a game, platformers were co-opted to help. Nowadays it's often roguelikes. And sometimes it really fits. Taking a long, wayward journey in a junky car? Turns out that really is a roguelike.Keep DrivingDeveloper: YCJY GamesPublisher: YCJY GamesPlatform: Played on PCAvailability: Out now on PC (Steam) This is the idea behind Keep Driving, a game my brain keeps calling Free Driving, probably because of the sense of unbounded potential it allows for. In Keep Driving you fill your crappy car up with stuff you'll need for the next few days and then head out on the road, picking up hitchhikers - or ignoring them - and engaging in battles with very ordinary road-based problems, like being stuck behind a lorry or dealing with a bad road surface. Because it's a roguelike you have to manage a handful of resources, including fuel and the general state of your car. You need to keep your energy up and you need to keep moving. It's all seen from the side-on perspective and it really feels like you're hitting the open road.Battles play upon those resources, by the way. Whatever you're faced with, they will project little lines of resource points onto the screen and you need to use your own abilities (which hang from the rear-view mirror like air fresheners) to match those specific points and cancel them out. Leave the points in play too long and you take damage to that resource (I think). Cancel them out and the challenge is over, and you're off to the next bit of business. Here's the trailer for Keep Driving.Watch on YouTubeI'm still early on, but I already love the game's ability to conjure memorable journeys. My parents met when my dad was hitchhiking, so I always feel duty bound to pick up everyone I see by the road in-game. First time out, it was a woman in a wedding dress who had a useful skill I could use in battle. Second time out, it was someone who the game openly told me was a bit of a useless idiot. I plonked them in the back seat.Yes! You can choose where people sit, just as you can rearrange what's in the trunk or the wheel well using a form of inventory Tetris. You can put helpful snacks in the glove compartment - chocolate that gives you a burst of stats when you're getting low, say, or duct tape which helps out the car in some way. You can upgrade everything at garages, fill up at petrol stations, and buy stuff you might need at roadside convenience stores. This is all lovely, and at times the game feels like a playable version of that Jack Reacher book where he hitches a lift with the wrong crew and spends a lot of time planning his escape at drive-thru McDonalds branches. But what I really love is the way this game feels like it's rocketed straight out of someone's memory of a gloriously wasted summer when they found themselves with an unreliable old Volvo and nowhere in particular they needed to be. A summer when their best friend was the FM radio and some weirdo they picked up by the side of the road. Sounds great, to be honest.

This update added leaderboards and more, and it was the first step in releasing new content planned as part of the February 2025 roadmap. While most of the changes and additions have been received well by the TFD community, a lot of The First Descendant fans are not happy with a secret nerf to Ines Raya, as players dub it a serious downgrade nobody wanted. The First Descendant secret Ines Raya nerfFollowing the release of update 1.2.6, The First Descendant fans have noticed changes to the look of Ines Raya. These have been branded a nerf by the community as fans preferred her original appearance compared to the new.As for whats exactly different, players on Reddit have discovered that Nexon secretly altered Ines Rayas default outfit. Instead of the shiny and glossy original dark black, Ines Rayas default outfit color has slightly changed to a dull grey. What makes this even worse is that Ines Rayas default black isnt in the game as a dye, so its not possible to simply repaint the skin. Save Up to $1,200 on the Samsung Galaxy S25! Pre-order now and save big with trade-in and Samsung credit. Limited time only! *Includes trade-in value + $300 Samsung credit. In addition to the color changes, eagle eyed fans have noticed a difference regarding Ines Rayas body proportions. Per the community, Ines Rayas glutes have received a serious downgrade, and this is the most devastating nerf delivered by Nexon. While its possible the size of Ines Rayas glutes have been decreased, the most likely explanation is that its an illusion caused by the color change and lighting.Responding to the nerf on Reddit, a lot of players are not happy. There are many comments such as, Terrible decision. It should be reverted, as well as fans calling it a serious downgrade from the concept art. Others have pointed out that its also probably why her butt looked off when I was playing as her today. Must-Listen: Publishing Manor Lords w/ Joe Robinson VideoGamer Podcast Listen Now Everyone agrees its a baffling change that doesnt look better than the original. It wasnt included in the 1.2.6 patch notes, and Nexon hasnt provided an explanation as for why they altered the color. One user tried to rationalize it as the original black outfit possibly not having any contrast with any other accents on the skin, but, even if thats the reason, the original look was still much better.Others are more sceptical with their reasoning. There are accusations that Nexon changed the outfit so players purchase black dye to get as close to the original glossy look as possible, seeing as the color isnt available as a dye.Regardless of Nexons reason, fans are encouraging players to ask the developer to revert the change during the livestream scheduled for February 13th. Theres no guarantee Nexon will respond to the request, but hopefully they do as they have been very flexible and accommodating to fans in the past. For more The First Descendant, check outeverything we know about Season 3including release date, new character, next Fellow, new features, and more. The First DescendantPlatform(s):PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S, Xbox Series XGenre(s):Action, Adventure, RPG5VideoGamerRelated TopicsThe First Descendant Subscribe to our newsletters!By subscribing, you agree to our Privacy Policy and may receive occasional deal communications; you can unsubscribe anytime.Share

Knocked OutFootball Manager 25 has been cancelled, so make sure to hug a lad in your life today as they cry into their big file of teenagers who can execute a flawless rabonaDon't worry, Toesphere Overseer 26 is still a thing, and will be Sports Interactive's big focus going forwards.Image credit: Sports Interactive News by Mark Warren Senior Staff Writer Published on Feb. 7, 2025 Sorry, season ticket holders the world over. Football Manager 25 has officially been cancelled, SEGA and Sports Interactive have announced. It's ok, though, take a minute to dry your tears on a corner flag, because Footy Manager 26 is still coming and will be the developer's main focus going forwards. As you may well be aware, FM25 had lived a troubled life prior to today's news, with a couple of delays leaving it pretty out of position in a way that'd probably get you yelled at by a middle-aged man that you refer to as 'gaffer'.To see this content please enable targeting cookies. Now, it's been put out of its misery. "Sports Interactive regret to inform that, following extensive internal discussion and careful consideration with SEGA, we have made the difficult decision to cancel Football Manager 25 and shift our focus to the next release," the developer wrote in a statement."For the large numbers of you who pre-ordered FM25," it continued, "we thank you enormously for your trust and support were very sorry to have let you down. To see this content please enable targeting cookies."We know this will come as a huge disappointment, especially given that the release date has already moved twice, and you have been eagerly anticipating the first gameplay reveal. We can only apologise for the time it has taken to communicate this decision. Due to stakeholder compliance, including legal and financial regulations, today was the earliest date that we could issue this statement."It explained that "whilst many areas of the game have hit our targets, the overarching player experience and interface is not where we need it to be", and that this made simply releasing FM25 as is and fixing issues post-launch was "not the right thing to do" in the developer's eyes."Through the cancellation, every effort is now focused on ensuring that our next release achieves our goal and hits the quality level we all expect," it finished, "We will update you on how we are progressing with that as soon as we are able to do so."There's a Q & A section on the same page as the statement that'll provide guidance if you're one of those FM25 pre-orderers, and it also re-iterates that FM24 won't be getting an extra squad update due to this cancellation, as "this is a substantial undertaking and would divert critical resources away from the development of the next release which requires our full focus".
