  • Ancient Egyptian Mummies Smell Spicy and Sweet Instead of Musty or Moldy
    www.discovermagazine.com
One would expect a mummy to smell moldy, musty, and mildewy. But the first study to systematically sniff the wrapped human remains report much more pleasant scents, describing whiffs as "woody," "spicy," and "sweet," according to a report in in Journal of the American Chemical Society. The smell of mummified bodies has for years attracted significant interest from experts and the general public, but no combined chemical and perceptual scientific study has been conducted until now, lead author, Matija Strli, a UCL scientist and author of the paper, said in a press release.Unwrapping the Scent of a MummyResearchers from the University College London and University of Ljubljana, working with conservators and curators at the Egyptian Museum in Cairo, deployed a variety of techniques to explore mummies scent spectrum, including a variety of instruments, nine human sniffers, and an electronic nose. The study provides insight into the materials used for mummification, how preservation practices changed over time, and the effects of museum storage. It could lead to better mummy conservation. This ground-breaking research really helps us better plan conservation and understand the ancient embalming materials. It adds another layer of data to enrich the museum exhibition of mummified bodies, said Strli in the release.Analyzing Odor Molecules Odors are essentially molecules in the air emitted by substances. So it made sense that the researchers deployed analytical chemistry tools to suss out the scents. They were especially interested in the origin of each smell. They intended to pinpoint scents resulting from the original mummification process, pesticides that may have been added later, and the result of decay caused by a variety of microorganisms. There is a certain internal logic to making mummies smell good. Their creators didnt want the dearly departed to carry their funk into the afterlife. To the ancient Egyptians, mummification was an important mortuary practice aimed at preserving the body and soul for the afterlife through a detailed ritual of embalming of the deceased using oils, waxes and balms, Ali Abdelhalim, an author of the paper and director of the Egyptian Museum in Cairo, said in the release. The practice evolved over time, and identifying different techniques and materials used offers insights into the era, location and socioeconomic status of the individual being mummified. The Importance of ScentScent was an important aspect of ancient Egyptian culture. Pleasant smells were associated with deities, while foul ones indicated corruption and decay associated with mortality. The researchers determined that the mummies perfume came from a complex mix of sources. They included oils from pine, cedar, and juniper trees, resins like frankincense and myrrh, and a variety of waxes.Eventually, those scents could be sniffed by the general public. Now that mummies bouquets have been parsed, museums may recreate them. Such mummy smellscapes might be a coming soon to a museum near you. • Jumping Exercises May Keep Astronauts' Cartilage Strong For Spacewalks
    www.discovermagazine.com
Space missions take a toll on astronauts bodies, especially when it comes to bone and joint health, but jumping exercises may mitigate damage and even improve physical conditioning. A recent study showed that knee cartilage was strengthened in mice that engaged in jumping workouts, a benefit that scientists think could possibly extend to humans. This type of training could become a crucial preventative measure for astronauts, who often experience weakening of cartilage due to low gravity in space. The study, published in the journal npj Microgravity, offers an exciting possibility to keep astronauts healthy as they embark on space missions that entail physically demanding tasks. Researchers are confident that the successful results of jumping workouts in mice could be applied to humans, with the potential to prevent cartilage degradation in space.Keeping Astronauts HealthyCartilage, a connective, flexible tissue, is a critical component of the human body, facilitating the smooth movement of joints by reducing friction and keeping bones from rubbing against each other. Despite the vital role of cartilage, it heals slowly and can lose integrity during long periods of inactivity.Cartilage health is a particular concern for astronauts, as low gravity and space radiation have been shown to cause cartilage degradation in those who spend long periods of time in space. Astronauts usually exercise an average of around two hours a day while in space to maintain physical fitness, as they need a healthy body for tasks like spacewalks and equipment repairs. With space missions becoming more ambitious by the year, envisioning destinations like the far side of the Moon and Mars, astronauts' health will need to be prioritized more than ever.Think about sending somebody on a trip to Mars; they get there, and they can't walk because they developed osteoarthritis of the knees or the hips, and their joints don't function, said study author Marco Chiaberge, an astrophysicist at Johns Hopkins University, the Space Telescope Science Institute, and the European Space Agency, in a statement. Astronauts also perform spacewalks often. They serviced the Hubble Space Telescope five times, and in the future, they will need to spend more time in space and the Moon, where we will build larger telescopes to explore the universe and where they will need to stay as healthy as possible.Read More: Back Pain is Highly Common Among AstronautsStrengthening Cartilage The new study has shown that jumping exercises could reverse the trend of cartilage breakdown and create more durable cartilage in the process. Researchers observed this promising outcome in a group of mice that were put through jump training sessions three times a week; another group of mice, meanwhile, went through a nine-week period of reduced movement. They found that the mice in the reduced movement group experienced a 14 percent reduction in cartilage thickness. In contrast, the mice in the jump-training group experienced a 26 percent increase compared to the control group and had 110 percent thicker cartilage than the reduced movement group.Jumping not only fortified cartilage but also enhanced bone health; the shin bones in the jumping mice saw a 15 percent boost in mineral density. In particular, trabecular bone porous bone tissue that acts like a shock absorber had become significantly thicker.A New Exercise RegimenThe researchers note that more studies need to be conducted to see if these benefits are truly applicable to humans. Jumping exercises if they indeed affect cartilage the same way in humans could be implemented in pre-flight routines, and specially designed exercise machines could help guide these kinds of workouts in space. Future studies will also work to understand whether the exercise could recover cartilage damage in astronauts who have returned from a space mission.Based on the study's results, jump training may also have other applications in supporting arthritis patients and improving athletes performance. Knowing that jumping workouts may have the potential to reinforce cartilage in the knee, scientists are now determined to figure out how else physical activity can promote cartilage health for both astronauts and those who remain here on Earth. • What do Egyptian mummies smell like? Surprisingly pleasant.

Credit: Emma PaolinShareMost people know what an ancient Egyptian mummy looks like, but they probably cant tell you about how they smell. You dont have to wait to get up-close-and-personal to one in a museum to find out, though. Researchers at the University College London collaborated with the Egyptian Museum in Cairo to scientifically analyze those very scentsand the answer is a mostly pleasant mix of earthy waxes, oils, and resins. But learning a mummys olfactory details wasnt just for curiositys sakethe teams results, published February 13 in the Journal of the American Chemical Society, could help preserve the relics.Ancient Egyptian mummification techniques almost always focused on ensuring the best preservation possible. These methods developed over hundreds of years, and reflected different societal factors at those points in time.Active sampling with sorbent tubes of the air surrounding a mummified body from the New Kingdom at the exhibition area of the Egyptian museum in Cairo.Credit: Emma Paolin Mummification was an important mortuary practice aimed at preserving the body and soul for the afterlife through a detailed ritual of embalming of the deceased using oils, waxes and balms, Ali Abdelhalim, director of the Egyptian Museum in Cairo and study co-author, explained in an accompanying statement on Thursday. The practice evolved over time, and identifying different techniques and materials used offers insights into the era, location and socioeconomic status of the individual being mummified. But apart from preservation itself, scent was also a major part of mummification. Ancient Egyptians associated pleasant odors not only with cleanliness and purity, but the bodies of deities themselves. Much like today, noxious smells were also reminders of bodily decay. This combination of olfactory focus and advanced mummification processes was so strong that, even today, a mummys aromas can recall the past. Their approach merged both traditional human sensory experience and scientific analysis. In one phase, a panel of trained human sniffers applied their keen olfactory abilities to help describe mummy aromas based on intensity, quality, and pleasantness. In another step, researchers used a gas chromatograph and a mass spectrometer to identify the origins of each scent.Emma Paolin, PhD researcher at University of Ljubljana (in the back) and Dr. Cecilia Bembibre, lecturer at the University College London (in the front) taking swab samples for the purpose of microbiological analysis at the Krakow University of Economics. Credit: Abdelrazek Elnaggar While some come from the bodies themselves, many other chemical molecules arose from archeological objects like the sarcophaguses and mummification fabric. Others stemmed from more modern additions like pesticides and other conservation products. Once categorized, the team was then able to describe the smell of each mummy in detail.Even around 5,000 years after their embalming, Strli and collaborators described the bodies as smelling pleasant. This is largely thanks to the materials applied to the mummies, which included scented waxes, coniferous resins and oils made from pine, cedar, and juniper, as well as gum resins such as frankincense and myrrh.Strli added that in addition to expanding our knowledge of ancient Egyptian embalming processes, the findings may help improve conservation techniques to guard the mummifies against further deterioration or damage. Looking towards the future, the information may also help with the creation of new museum exhibit opportunities around the world through the use of smellscapes in addition to the millennia-old visual components.
