• The Most Exciting Details and Easter Eggs We Noticed in Snow Whites Music Videos
    gizmodo.com
Finally there are more looks at Disneys live-action Snow Whitecourtesy of the stunning music video for Waiting on a Wish and its unplugged version, both sung by Rachel Zegler. And its a feast for Disney Princess fans as we get glimpses at elements of the story we know from Walt Disney Animations first animated feature, Gal Gadot mean mugging as the Evil Queen, the dwarfs, and the prince-to-be (Andrew Burnap), who might not be the type of prince who already has a crown. Here are our favorite gems and Easter eggs from the new visuals. Snow Whites Origin Story Disney If Batman can get his origin story explored over and over, its only fair we get the same for Snow White. This one is particularly exciting as it combines the known fairytale lore of her namesake with her surviving a dangerous winter snow. If youve had a baby survive the NICU this is particularly touching to see. And the lyrics from Waiting on a Wish really hit: My father told me long ago, I braved a bitter storm of snow, Is that a girl Ill ever know again? Yes, Snow, you can overcome anything. Magic Mirror Disney Snow White has the Evil Queen so pressed every time the magic mirror says her step-daughter is the fairest one of all, we wouldnt be surprised if Snows bad haircut was her idea. The costuming is immaculate and that stained glass crown is a nice touch. Wishing Well Disney The visuals confirm that Waiting on a Wish is this movies version of the animated Snow Whites Im Wishing. Its a fitting addition and in an earlier trailer we heard Zegler sing the high-note vocal progression from the original animated film, which we hope theres more of. Prince or Pauper? Disney The love interest is thankfully not a weird royal lurking about Snow Whites kingdom. Here he is apprehended for what we can imagine might be breaking into the castle in the search of food, since the next frame is Snow White handing him bread. Were thinking hes from her kingdom and might later become a prince through his relationship with Snow White.Snow Whites Family Heirloom Disney In a scene we believe is connected to the passing of Snow Whites mother, the young princess is given a necklace with the reminder to be fearless, fair, brave, and truewhich is where we suspect the Evil Queens comprehension goes out the window. Snow White will always be more fair (as in just) and fair (as in prettier) than her. We already love this new Snow White canon accessory and you can already find it to get those cosplays ready at RockLove, fandom fashion jewelry purveyors. The Seven Dwarfs Disney Disney is sticking to the original cartoony design for the fairytale folk version of the dwarfs, similar to other magical creatures already seen in Disneys live-action canon such as the Fairy Godmothers in the Maleficent franchise.Snow Whites Scary Adventures Disney The frightening as hell trees are back! Were glad that this sequence and design will bring more horror elements into the film. It reminds us of the old version of the Disneyland ride. Animation Cottage-Core Homage Disney Who are the Seven Dwarfs interior designers? We need to know. But really, its so neat to see how the set design was inspired by the animated classic. Thats One Very Unappetizingly Scary Poison Apple Disney Ew, it looks like the crypt keeper. The poison apple does look perfectly freaky and we imagine it goes right back to looking quite appetizing in a flash. And Gadot truly brings out the ugliness in the the old hags grotesque makeup design. What a seamless transformation; we cant wait to see it continue to unfold.True Loves Kiss Disney When does it happen? We like the idea that its set up to almost happen before she bites the apple, but they get interrupted or he misses his shot. Maybe she encourages him to not miss next time, but by then its too late. This scene might also take place after she wakes up. Wait, who are those two normal people behind them? Huh, interesting. They Did the Thing! Disney Okay, obviously theres going to be 1:1 comparison shots but were glad our boy Dopeys diamond eyes made the cut.Snow White of the People Disney This definitely teases a less reactive princess who just lets things happen to her like in the original animated film. We love that this Snow Whites power is her kindness towards every living being and standing up for them. Its ambiguous if this is right before shes told to go to the forest or the end, in which case the finale we know might be quite different. Well find out March 21 when Snow White opens in theaters. • The Films of the Russo Brothers, Ranked
    gizmodo.com
What does it take for a movie to gross over $2 billion? A lot of butts in seats, of course. And that happens with global anticipation, great reviews, and a story people want to watch over and over again. Its a rare occurrence, having happened only six times in live-action history. Three of those were from James Cameron, one is from J.J. Abrams, and the other two are from Joe and Anthony Russo. The Russo brothers directed Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, two of the most technically complicated and narratively ambitious films in history. Each continued the story from two other Russo films, Captain America: The Winter Solider and Captain America: Civil War, Marvel movies that helped solidify and define the Marvel Cinematic Universe going into that epic two-part finale. It was quite the five-year run for the Russos, but only one chapter in their careers. Many probably dont realize it, but while the Russos made names for themselves on TV directing shows like Community and Arrested Development, they directed three movies before their Marvel run and three others after it. And now, of course, theyre going back to Marvel for two more massive Avengers movies, 2026s Doomsday and 2027s Secret Wars. So where do all these movies fall on a ranked list? With their latest film, Netflixs The Electric State, out next week, we decided to put the films of Joe and Anthony Russo on a list. Whats best? Whats the worst? Read on to find out. 9. You, Me and Dupree (2006) Owen Wilson, Kate Hudson, and Matt Dillon star in this comedy about a guy who crashes with his newly married friends only to overstay his welcome. In the years that followed big comedy hits Theres Something About Mary and Meet the Parents, we got a lot of half-funny imitators trying to capture that true-to-life raunchy tone. You, Me and Dupree is one of the more forgettable films of the era. Not a total disaster but nothing special.8. Welcome to Collinwood (2002) This crime caper starring William H. Macy, Sam Rockwell, Patricia Clarkson, and many more has its moments, but it feels more formulaic than not, especially released in an era dominated by another pair of filmmaking brothers, Joel and Ethan Coen. 7. Cherry (2021) The Russos first post-Marvel film was on the total other side of the spectrum. Tom Holland stars as a military veteran who turns to a life of crime to bolster a drug addiction. Tonally and narratively, its all over the place, but in the end is worth watching for Hollands commitment to the complex role. A big swing that didnt quite clear the fence. The Electric State Netflix 6. The Electric State (2025) The Electric State re-teams the directors with their Captain America and Avengers writing partners, Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. Based on a book by Simon Stlenhag, it follows a young woman (Millie Bobby Brown) who with the help of a scoundrel type (Chris Pratt) has to navigate a world decimated by a robot-human war to find her missing brother. The film is suitably entertaining with incredible visual effects and a killer cast, but about as predictable as movies come. 5. The Gray Man (2022) Call me crazy, and maybe you will, but I was fully entertained by The Gray Man. Chris Evans and Ryan Gosling star as dueling secret agents in a film that is so big and so over the top it feels like the Russos were given the keys to the Fast and Furious franchise, and brought along their own A-list stars. Its disposable but in a fun way. 4. Captain America: Civil War (2016) Look, I love Captain America: Civil War. I really do. But I really love all of the Russo brothers Marvel movies and if I have to look for something, anything, to distinguish between them, its this. Captain America: Civil War feels more like a Civil War movie than a Captain America movie. Its still great though.Remember when the Russos and Marvel faked us out with this scene? Legendary. Image: Marvel 3. Avengers: Infinity War (2018) Youll sense a running theme in these final four films. I think theyre all fantastic. Take Avengers: Infinity War, which is an ambitious, audacious superhero delight. A film that can be as big and bold as it wants to be because it hangs its hat on a decade of excellent storytelling. Without that, you couldnt end a movie killing half the characters and then rolling the credits. But Infinity War gives you all manner of spectacle and then a fabulous gut punch on top. 2. Avengers: Endgame (2019) Its weird to consider Avengers: Endgame one movie. Of course, it is one movie. A long movie but singular nevertheless. However, it only works as well as it does because its the rousing, epic conclusion to a decade-long saga. The Russos found themselves as conductors of some of the largest set pieces in film history as well as some of the most exciting and emotionally satisfying. Its an awesome movie from top to bottom and truly a landmark of film history. And yet, were talking Russos. So 1. Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014) Theres no denying that the Russos other three Marvel movies are spectacular. But it was their first crack at the genre, the smaller one, that really shines through. The Winter Soldier certainly leaned on earlier films. It had to. But it also built upon them in new and intriguing ways that helped set it apart. The movie finds that perfect balance of superhero style, political intrigue, and complex character-building. Thats why we think its the best Russo brothers movie to date. NA. Pieces (1997) To be honest, while weve seen all of the Russo movies mentioned above, there is one were missing. Its their 1997 directorial debut, Pieces, which premiered at the Slamdance Film Festival but never got picked up for distribution. One person who did see it though was Steven Soderbergh and his adoration for the film helped kick-start the careers of the brothers. So, in a way, none of these would exist without Pieces. When one thinks of a school, an immediate picture of a space brimming with energy and life is conjured in the mind. Rows of classrooms stacked one atop the other, with long endless corridors, is a bygone. A school is a space to nurture, to encourage curiosity and child-like wonder, and a space that is safe both physically and psychologically. The idea is not to be constrained in one space and be made to listen but rather to encourage freedom and playfulness.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture!Millenium World School is located on the outskirts of Hassan. The south-facing site is surrounded by agricultural fields and has a spectacular view of a lake and hills towards the northwest. The built mass is placed linearly along the north-south axis. It houses children from kindergarten to class 12. There are 3 distinct zones, segregated by age group and floor. An army of tall coconut trees that previously existed on site greets the visitors. The entry plaza consists of a lawn dotted with cobblestones, a large koi pond, and ledges around the coconut trees. It is also utilized as a waiting area by parents and children.Save this picture! Two east-facing triple-height courtyards form epicenters around which the entire built mass revolves. The first is a play court surrounded by kindergarten classrooms, also used as an outdoor learning space. The second larger courtyard with stepped seating forms a nexus in the school: a multifunctional space where morning assemblies are held, lunch breaks are taken, events are conducted, and classes are taught. As one climbs up the steps, a long ribbon window reveals the picturesque landscape with trees, hills, and a lake. Activities like dancing, singing, and yoga are conducted, transforming the school from a space of formal learning to a socio-cultural hub.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture!Corridors of the school are punctured with planter boxes throughout its expanse, cutting through the linearity and adding contrast between the rigid built mass and the softer landscape. The built structure is designed with the taller mass to the west, housing activity rooms and labs. The shorter mass with classrooms and courtyards is zoned to the east, ensuring mutual shading. Both zones have deep-set windows to protect from harsh sun and torrential rains. The southern faade features angled Corten steel fins that, as they weather, create a layer of rust, adding an evolving element to the building's appearance. These fins, along with the trees in the entry plaza, act as sunshades, protecting the interior from the intense southern sunlight.Save this picture! Most classrooms are zoned in the north, overlook the playground, and bring in diffused light. • Brain Imaging During Critical Midlife Window Could Catch Cognitive Decline
    www.discovermagazine.com
By the time we notice signs of cognitive decline due to aging, its often too late to effectively treat it. But taking a look at the brain during the critical window between the ages of 40 and 59 could provide a chance to prevent or slow conditions like Alzheimers disease, according to a study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The study suggests that patients in that window undergo functional MRI (fMRI) and electroencephalography (EEG). Those imaging tests can reveal biomarkers associated with cognitive decline while still providing enough time for effective treatment. An Insight into NeurodegenerationAnticipating the brains decline is tricky since it appears to follow an s-shaped curve rather than a straight line over time. In the study, an international team of neuroscientists detail that curve and identify critical points. They used neuroimaging techniques on more than 19,300 people to define those points. The study shows that the first signs of decline emerge at around age 44, with neurodegeneration hitting peak acceleration at age 67, then plateauing at age 90.Understanding exactly when and how brain aging accelerates gives us strategic time points for intervention, Lilianne R. Mujica-Parodi, a State University of New York, Stony Brook neuroscientist and author of the study, said in a press release. Weve identified a critical midlife window where the brain begins to experience declining access to energy but before irreversible damage occurs, essentially the bend before the break.Identifying Neuronal StressThe researchers have also identified a mechanism: neuronal stress due to not enough fuel. This stress happens to neurons in midlife. Theyre struggling, but theyre still viable, Parodi said. Therefore, providing an alternative fuel during this critical window can help restore function.Besides mapping the brains aging trajectory, the researchers also identified neuronal insulin resistance as one of its key drivers. They saw changes in genes that play a role in metabolism precede shifts in vascular and inflammatory indicators.Food for ThoughtsThe good news? That gap between changes in brain metabolism and those more permanent shifts that could physically impair the brain represents an opportunity for treatment. They also identified an alternative food for neurons that could stave off impairment. They used that food, something called a ketone transporter, in 101 study participants on different points of the brain aging curve. The effects were striking, with the treatment most benefiting participants in the 40-59-year-old group.Rather than waiting to slide down the cognitive decline curve, people might consider tinkering with their metabolism to stave off their brains aging process or consider other strategies to combat cognitive decline. Ketogenic diets or supplements might offer one path forward. If theyre not sure of the state of their mind, they might consider checking their head via brain imaging.Read More: Combat Cognitive Decline With These 5 ActivitiesArticle SourcesOur writers at Discovermagazine.com use peer-reviewed studies and high-quality sources for our articles, and our editors review for scientific accuracy and editorial standards. • Hominins Made Bone Tools 1.5 Million Years Ago, Hinting At Abstract Thought
    www.discovermagazine.com
Archaeologists have dug up a collection of mass-produced bone tools, the earliest ever discovered, suggesting that hominins systematically made tools out of bone around 1 million years earlier than previously thought. Described in a Nature study, the collection contains 27 fossilized tools that were fashioned around 1.5 million years ago. According to the archaeologists, this tool factory indicates that hominins exhibited advanced abstract thought early on in their history. The tools show evidence that their creators carefully worked the bones, chipping off flakes to create useful shapes, said Renata F. Peters, an archaeologist at University College London who was involved in the discovery, according to a press release. We were excited to find these bone tools from such an early timeframe. It means that human ancestors were capable of transferring skills from stone to bone, a level of complex cognition that we havent seen elsewhere for another million years.Pushing Back the Mass Production of Bone ToolsHominins, the taxonomic tribe that includes humans and human ancestors who walked upright, have been making tools out of stone for several million years. But their techniques havent stayed the same throughout that time. While hominins used simple methods to chip a few flakes off of stones at the start of the Oldowan age, around 2.7 million years ago, they used complex methods to chip many flakes off of stones at the beginning of the Acheulean age, around 1.7 million years ago. This more complex method of toolmaking from the start of the Acheulean, known as knapping, allowed hominins to mass-produce sharp, standardized tools from stone. But, apparently, it also allowed them to mass-produce sharp, standardized tools from bone, too. Unearthing a set of 27 bone tools at the important archaeological site of Olduvai Gorge in Tanzania, archaeologists have shown that the Acheuleans more complex methods were used to mass-produce bone tools around 1.5 million years ago approximately 1 million years earlier than previously thought. Indeed, bone tools are relatively rare and isolated in the archaeological record until around 500,000 years ago, when the systematic production of these tools was previously thought to start. This discovery leads us to assume that early humans significantly expanded their technological options, which until then were limited to the production of stone tools and now allowed new raw materials to be incorporated into the repertoire of potential artifacts, said Ignacio de la Torre, another paper author and an archaeologist at the Instituto de Historia of the CSIC-Spanish National Research Council, according to the release. Handy HomininsFashioned from the limb bones of large mammals, mainly elephants and hippos, the tools were strong and sturdy possibly suited for the processing of animal carcasses into food. According to the archaeologists, the transition from stone to bone was a feat of abstract thinking, requiring an aptitude in toolmaking and an appreciation that the knapping techniques that worked on one material would also work on another. This expansion of technological potential indicates advances in the cognitive abilities and mental structures of these hominins, who knew how to incorporate technical innovations by adapting their knowledge of stone work to the manipulation of bone remains, said de la Torre, according to the release.Though it isnt clear which hominin created the tools, as hominin remains weren't found nearby, at least two species of human ancestor inhabited the region around 1.5 million years ago, including one species of Australopithecus and one species of Homo, the latter being Homo erectus. Whoever the toolmakers were, however, the archaeologists say that the hominin inhabitants of the area were a bit handier a bit earlier than previously believed, at least when it came to bone tools.
