    www.architectsjournal.co.uk
The AJ100 practices designs for Phoenix Yard, on a site opposite SBS Architects Digbeth coach station, have been drawn-up for car dealer turned-property developer Hartwell.AHMM says the project, named after the former Phoenix ironworks on the site, will create a new gateway to Digbeth by revitalising what is an underused brownfield site used as carparking. The proposal includes 240 homes, shops and new public realm, including landscaped areas bounded by Coventry Street, Oxford Street, Meriden Street and Digbeth High Street.AdvertisementThe scheme will also deliver 24,200m2 of media and educational workspace to support the under-construction future home of the BBC in the West Midlands. This is being built at the nearby former Typhoo Tea factory in Digbeth, designed by Howells. The project team says the scheme will contribute to emerging development in the east side of Birmingham, including Lendleases 1.9 billion Smithfield masterplan and Grimshaws under-construction HS2 station at Curzon Street.Hartwell and AHMM say the development is targeting BREEAM Excellent, WELL certification, WiredScore Platinum, SmartScore, NABERS and a minimum 10 per cent biodiversity net gain.A public consultation on the proposals runs until 31 March while aplanning application is due to be submitted in May.Current site viewAdvertisement

Insomniac's delisted VR games return to the Meta StoreEye, eye, Cap'n!Image credit: Insomniac News by Victoria Kennedy News Reporter Published on March 10, 2025 After its VR catalogue was removed from the Meta Store earlier this year, Insomniac has announced the affected games are now making a return. At the time of writing, three of the four previoulsy delisted games are again available on the Meta Store. These are Edge of Nowhere, Stormland, and Feral Rites.Meanwhile, Insomniac is still "actively" working on getting the fourth of its Meta VR titles - The Unspoken - back on the store front. "VR players, we appreciate your patience while we work with Meta [to] restore access to these games," Insomniac wrote on social media.Stormland VR Feels Like A Sci-Fi Far Cry - Ian's VR Corner. Watch on YouTubeAll four of the affected games were developed with funding by Meta. While no reason was given for their removal from the store, the general consensus was that it was due to the certification process. A similar thing happened back in 2022, as well. While the four games had seemingly been absent from the store for several months now, their removal was recently highlighted by freelance journalist Dominic Tarason on Bluesky."I thankfully picked up Stormland (their best-known game) and can still access it, but the others are so thoroughly vanished that not even pirate and torrent sites seem to have the rest anymore," Tarason wrote at the start of the month. The Unspoken? • New Diablo 4 seasons will be much harder as Blizzard reworks pretty much everything

You can trust VideoGamer. Our team of gaming experts spend hours testing and reviewing the latest games, to ensure you're reading the most comprehensive guide possible. Rest assured, all imagery and advice is unique and original. Check out how we test and review games hereThe next season of Diablo 4 will revert to a more classic style of ARPG difficulty following the success of Season of Witchcraft. As Blizzard continues to move forward with the popular live-service game, dedicated players will be met with a more substantial challenge. With Blizzard also looking to scrap battle passes in the near future, the studio is planning a huge rework of Diablo 4. Considering the massive success of rival ARPG Path of Exile 2, its clear that Blizzard is keen to stay competitive.Diablo 4 will increase in difficultyRevealed in a recent Campfire Chat, Blizzard confirmed its plan to change the progression of the newest Diablo game to become slower and more challenging. While D4 was slower and harder at launch, updates tuned the games progression to be more like Diablo 3.The first 25 levels of a new character will now be harder and more meaningful as players spend time growing their heroes. Following series lead Rod Fergussons comments about blasters who rush through seasons, Blizzard is responding with a harder game to fight through.Diablo 4 design director Colin Finer explained that the game will feel more rewarding and satisfying as you go through these levels as the studio also improves itemisation of dropped loot. Legendary items will drop less frequently and more common items will increase in power.Additionally, endgame content such as Torment levels and bosses will be made substantially more difficult. Every difficulty level will be a more noticeable shift and bosses will be a real challenge with better loot to earn as a result.Season of Witchcraft was a noticeably more difficult season than usual, and many players responded positively to the added challenge. In response, Blizzard is focusing on that success, hopefully turning the game into more of a Diablo 2 experience as time goes on. After all, we already have Runewords. For more Diablo coverage, listen to our interview with series creator David Brevik or read about his original plans for the third game in the franchise.Diablo 4Platform(s):PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S/XGenre(s):Action, Action RPG, RPGSubscribe to our newsletters!By subscribing, you agree to our Privacy Policy and may receive occasional deal communications; you can unsubscribe anytime.Share

  • Diablo 4's next season will see Blizzard turn endgame boss encounters on their heads and give you their beefy powers
    www.vg247.com
Boss 'Em AroundDiablo 4's next season will see Blizzard turn endgame boss encounters on their heads and give you their beefy powersYou've heard of using other classes' powers, and using the powers of enemies in Diablo 4. Soon, you'll be able to do a lot more.Image credit: Blizzard Entertainment. News by Sherif Saed Contributing Editor Published on March 10, 2025 Blizzard has officially detailed what we can expect from Diablo 4s next season. More specifically, what all players will be able to enjoy when patch 2.2.0 arrives, and what you can expect to see in the upcoming Public Test Realm (PTR).Firstly, PTR will be available March 11-18. Just like with past PTRs, this one is also limited to just PC on Battlenet. This means it wont be available on Steam, but Game Pass subscribers on PC will be able to play it.You can expect similar functionality in this test, too, such as the PTR boost and account copy features. All of which will be available from within the game after you log in. The exciting part, of course, is what youre actually going to be testing. To see this content please enable targeting cookies. The big new feature in patch 2.2.0 is the ability to make use of Boss Powers. Youll be able to capture these powers from defeated World, Event, and Endgame Bosses. 24 of those exist (one from each boss), and each one comes with two effects: Main and Modifier. The patch will introduce the new Power Slot, which is where youre going to slot these powers to enhance your build. The even more interesting news is that youll be able to mix and match, such as having one Main and three Modifiers active from different bosses at the same time.Similar to the Spirit Powers used by the Spiritborn class, the Main Boss Power you have equipped will dictate how your character plays, whereas the Modifiers will boost whats already there. Some powers are available to equip at any level, while others are limited to Torment difficulty levels. The throughline this season will culminate with the new rotating event: Apparition Incursion. As the name might suggest, this is the work of Belial, whose illusion magic has caused enemies to rise across Sanctuary. Bosses defeated within Apparition Incursions will too provide their powers to whomever defeats them. Dirty power. | Image credit: Blizzard Entertainment.Alongside that, Blizzard has also revamped the way Lair Bosses (now Endgame Bosses) work. Theyve been broken into three tiers: Initiate, Greater, and Exalted. This denotes difficulty, as well as rewards.Initiates are Beast in the Ice, Grigoire, Lord Zir, Varshan, and Urivar. Greaters are Andariel, Duriel, and Harbringer of Hatred. The only current Exalted is Belial, Lord of Lies. Regardless of the boss tier, youll need to be Torment difficulty to fight any of them.As part of this overhaul, youll no longer need materials to summon the bosses. However, the reward you receive from defeating them wont be what it used to be. Instead, when a boss dies, theyre going to spawn a chest, which youre to need the aforementioned materials to open.Boss materials, however, have been simplified. Each boss now requires a Lair Boss Key to unlock their chest (called Hoard). Instead of mixing several items to create a lure, you just need the one. Finally, Boss Lairs now have unique map icons, which you can use to directly teleport to the fight after youve discovered them.Catch up on all the Boss Powers you can siphon, as well as all the new Legendary Aspects and Unique Aspects coming to the game with patch 2.2.0 on the official blog.

  • Breakthrough hybrid prosthetic hand now features human touch via sensors
    3dprintingindustry.com
Researchers from Johns Hopkins University (JHU), Florida Atlantic University (FAU) and the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC), have developed a prosthetic hand designed to mimic the human touch.Led by JHU biomedical engineering professor Nitish Thakor, and biomedical engineer Sriramana Sankar, this development could improve prosthetic solutions for individuals with hand loss and refine how robotic arms interact with physical environments. The work was supported by funding from the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) through the Orthotics and Prosthetics Outcomes Research Program and the National Science Foundation (NSF).The goal from the beginning has been to create a prosthetic hand that we model based on the human hands physical and sensing capabilitiesa more natural prosthetic that functions and feels like a lost limb, said Sankar. We want to give people with upper-limb loss the ability to safely and freely interact with their environment, to feel and hold their loved ones without concern of hurting them.Hybrid robotic hand with neuromorphic tactile sensing inspired by the human hand. Image via JHU.A hybrid prosthetic hand with human-like sensingUnlike traditional robotic hands that tend to be either too rigid or too soft, this system balances both elements. This results in a grip that is firm enough to securely hold a water bottle yet delicate enough to pick up a fragile plastic cup without damaging it.To achieve this, the prosthetic hand uniquely combines the flexibility of soft robotics with the strength of traditional rigid robotics, allowing it to grasp and handle various everyday items more naturally. Additionally, the hands fingertips feature three tactile sensor layers, each inspired by the human skins sensory receptors. These include piezoresistive layers sensitive to light touch and deformation, as well as a piezoelectric layer designed to detect subtle vibrations, mirroring the sophisticated sensory experience of human fingers. The hybrid robotic finger incorporates three independently actuated soft joints made from chemical manufacturing firm Smooth-Ons Dragon Skin 10 silicone, supported by 3D printed polylactic acid (PLA) rigid skeletal structures.Finite element analysis and practical tests showed the hybrid finger could achieve significant flexibility, 130 curvature and a flexion angle of 208, at an actuation pressure of just 7 psi. This is notably more efficient compared to purely soft robotic fingers, which typically require much higher pressures. If youre holding a cup of coffee, how do you know youre about to drop it? Your palm and fingertips send signals to your brain that the cup is slipping, Thakor said. Our system is neurally inspiredit models the hands touch receptors to produce nervelike messages so the prosthetics brain, or its computer, understands if something is hot or cold, soft or hard, or slipping from the grip.During lab tests, the hybrid finger demonstrated over three times the grasping force of fully soft robotic alternatives. The embedded multilayered tactile sensors proved highly effective in distinguishing between 26 diverse textures, achieving a notable average accuracy of 98.38%, compared to roughly 83% accuracy from standard soft and rigid prosthetic fingers. To process tactile signals efficiently, the team used neuromorphic encoding, a method inspired by natural nerve communication. This approach significantly enhanced the hands capability to discriminate textures.Practical demonstrations further highlighted the hands utility, with successful electromyography (EMG) controlled experiments involving the grasping of various objects from the Southampton Hand Assessment Procedure (SHAP), ranging from delicate to heavier items.Remarkably, the hybrid robotic hand achieved a 99.69% accuracy rate when identifying and differentiating 15 common everyday objects during grasping tasks. Items tested included objects of varying shapes, textures, and levels of softness, showcasing the prosthetic hands adaptability and precision.Having termed the research a breakthrough, the researchers still see room for improvement, like adding rigid joints to boost gripping strength and extending sensory coverage beyond the fingertips. They also suggested exploring nerve stimulation to provide users with a more natural, lifelike sense of touch.Hybrid finger with multilayered neuromorphic tactile sensing. Image via JHU.Improving grasp and artificial touch in prostheticsIn a similar vein, other teams have also been exploring prosthetic solutions aimed at enhancing practical usability. For instance, prosthetic 3D printing firm Open Bionics delivered its advanced Hero Arm prostheses to a medical facility in Germany, aiding Ukrainian soldiers injured by landmine explosions. Equipped with forearm-activated sensors, the Hero Arm allowed precise control over its movable thumb and fingers, providing significantly better grasping capability than traditional prosthetics. One of the recipients, Vitalii Ivashchuk, described feeling pleasantly surprised by how functional and natural the prosthesis felt, noting it exceeded his expectations. Coordinated by Ukraines Superhumans Foundation with support from Mastercard, this initiative aimed to expand prosthetic and rehabilitation services in Ukraine.Scientists at the University of Bristol developed an artificial fingertip, called TacTip, enabling prosthetic limbs to feel objects. Created using 3D printed structures mimicking human skins papillae, this device sensed object shapes and transmitted artificial nerve signals resembling natural tactile responses.During testing, TacTip accurately responded to pressure similar to human skin but showed slightly lower sensitivity in detecting object orientations due to its thicker artificial skin. Despite this, researchers observed significant similarities between artificial and natural sensory responses. The team suggested that with further refinement, TacTip could significantly improve robotic dexterity, enabling robots to automate sensitive tasks like fruit picking or offering enhanced tactile sensations in prosthetic hands.What3D printing trendsshould you watch out for in 2025?How is thefuture of 3D printingshaping up?To stay up to date with the latest 3D printing news, dont forget to subscribe to the 3D Printing Industry newsletter or follow us on Twitter, or like our page on Facebook. While youre here, why not subscribe to our Youtube channel? From what the artist (previously) describes as a mysterious and ambiguous material, botanicals appear to float in frozen cubes of water.Sasaki employs glass to document and preserve the nature of the present. Works like Subtle Intimacy respond to places and experiences where she feels present. It is vital for me to connect who I am and where I am, especially when I am in unfamiliar spaces, the artist tells Colossal. She likens intimacy to nostalgia, exploring the depth of feeling associated with memories, comfort, and security.Subtle Intimacy 2012-2023 (2023), glass, plants, LED, and aluminum, 253.5 x 310 x 332 centimeters. Collection of 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa. Photo by Nik van der GiesenSasaki traces her fascination with the medium to childhood, specifically to its visual similarities to the surfaces of ponds or lakes. I was always wondering how I could make something out of water, she says. When I saw molten glass at a glassblowing studio during a summer family trip in Okinawa, I fell in love with it.When Sasaki moved to the U.S. from Japan in 2007, she began incorporating plants into her work as a way to recover my senses from my loss of intimacy and home in my mother country, she says. When she returned to Japan five years later, she continued to hone her focus on botanicals.Enchanted by how plants can express experiences of her surroundings, Sasaki portrays individual botanicals in sculptures ranging in size from a few feet wide to room-size installations. She says:Collecting plants is the most important aspect of the work. I use all my five senses in gathering plants. That helps me to recall my past memories, especially in my childhood, and to connect my feelings of intimacy towards my country, Japan.Sasaki places collected specimens between two sheets of glass and fires the piece in a kiln. The plant turns to white ash, leaving the impression of petals, leaves, and veins. Air bubbles that naturally emerge in the heat are also preserved in what the artist likes to a time capsule. The original form of the plant no longer exists but its impression endures.Detail of Subtle Intimacy 2012-2023 (2023).
