• Implementing Text-to-Speech TTS with BARK Using Hugging Faces Transformers library in a Google Colab environment
    www.marktechpost.com
Text-to-Speech (TTS) technology has evolved dramatically in recent years, from robotic-sounding voices to highly natural speech synthesis. BARK is an impressive open-source TTS model developed by Suno that can generate remarkably human-like speech in multiple languages, complete with non-verbal sounds like laughing, sighing, and crying. In this tutorial, well implement BARK using Hugging Faces Transformers library in a Google Colab environment. By the end, youll be able to:Set up and run BARK in ColabGenerate speech from text inputExperiment with different voices and speaking stylesCreate practical TTS applicationsBARK is fascinating because its a fully generative text-to-audio model that can produce natural-sounding speech, music, background noise, and simple sound effects. Unlike many other TTS systems that rely on extensive audio preprocessing and voice cloning, BARK can generate diverse voices without speaker-specific training.Lets get started!Implementation StepsStep 1: Setting Up the EnvironmentFirst, we need to install the necessary libraries. BARK requires the Transformers library from Hugging Face, along with a few other dependencies:# Install the required libraries!pip install transformers==4.31.0!pip install accelerate!pip install scipy!pip install torch!pip install torchaudioNext, well import the libraries well be using:import torchimport numpy as npimport IPython.display as ipdfrom transformers import BarkModel, BarkProcessor# Check if GPU is availabledevice = "cuda" if torch.cuda.is_available() else "cpu"print(f"Using device: {device}")Step 2: Loading the BARK ModelNow, lets load the BARK model and processor from Hugging Face:# Load the model and processormodel = BarkModel.from_pretrained("suno/bark")processor = BarkProcessor.from_pretrained("suno/bark")# Move model to GPU if availablemodel = model.to(device)BARK is a relatively large model, so this step might take a minute or two to complete as it downloads the model weights.Step 3: Generating Basic SpeechLets start with a simple example to generate speech from text:# Define text inputtext = "Hello! My name is BARK. I'm an AI text to speech model. It's nice to meet you!"# Preprocess textinputs = processor(text, return_tensors="pt").to(device)# Generate speechspeech_output = model.generate(**inputs)# Convert to audiosampling_rate = model.generation_config.sample_rateaudio_array = speech_output.cpu().numpy().squeeze()# Play the audioipd.display(ipd.Audio(audio_array, rate=sampling_rate))# Save the audio filefrom scipy.io.wavfile import writewrite("basic_speech.wav", sampling_rate, audio_array)print("Audio saved to basic_speech.wav")Output: To listen to the audio kindly refer to the notebook (please find the attached link at the endStep 4: Using Different Speaker PresetsBARK comes with several predefined speaker presets in different languages. Lets explore how to use them:# List available English speaker presetsenglish_speakers = [ "v2/en_speaker_0", "v2/en_speaker_1", "v2/en_speaker_2", "v2/en_speaker_3", "v2/en_speaker_4", "v2/en_speaker_5", "v2/en_speaker_6", "v2/en_speaker_7", "v2/en_speaker_8", "v2/en_speaker_9"]# Choose a speaker presetspeaker = english_speakers[3] # Using the fourth English speaker preset# Define text inputtext = "BARK can generate speech in different voices. This is an example of a different speaker preset."# Add speaker preset to the inputinputs = processor(text, return_tensors="pt", voice_preset=speaker).to(device)# Generate speechspeech_output = model.generate(**inputs)# Convert to audioaudio_array = speech_output.cpu().numpy().squeeze()# Play the audioipd.display(ipd.Audio(audio_array, rate=sampling_rate))Step 5: Generating Multilingual SpeechBARK supports several languages out of the box. Lets generate speech in different languages:# Define texts in different languagestexts = { "English": "Hello, how are you doing today?", "Spanish": "Hola! Cmo ests hoy?", "French": "Bonjour! Comment allez-vous aujourd'hui?", "German": "Hallo! Wie geht es Ihnen heute?", "Chinese": "", "Japanese": ""}# Generate speech for each languagefor language, text in texts.items(): print(f"\nGenerating speech in {language}...") # Choose appropriate voice preset if available voice_preset = None if language == "English": voice_preset = "v2/en_speaker_1" elif language == "Spanish": voice_preset = "v2/es_speaker_1" elif language == "German": voice_preset = "v2/de_speaker_1" elif language == "French": voice_preset = "v2/fr_speaker_1" elif language == "Chinese": voice_preset = "v2/zh_speaker_1" elif language == "Japanese": voice_preset = "v2/ja_speaker_1" # Process text with language-specific voice preset if available if voice_preset: inputs = processor(text, return_tensors="pt", voice_preset=voice_preset).to(device) else: inputs = processor(text, return_tensors="pt").to(device) # Generate speech speech_output = model.generate(**inputs) # Convert to audio audio_array = speech_output.cpu().numpy().squeeze() # Play the audio ipd.display(ipd.Audio(audio_array, rate=sampling_rate)) write("basic_speech_multilingual.wav", sampling_rate, audio_array) print("Audio saved to basic_speech_multilingual.wav")Step 6: Creating a Practical Application Audio Book GeneratorLets build a simple audiobook generator that can convert paragraphs of text into speech:def generate_audiobook(text, speaker_preset="v2/en_speaker_2", chunk_size=250): """ Generate an audiobook from a long text by splitting it into chunks and processing each chunk separately. Args: text (str): The text to convert to speech speaker_preset (str): The speaker preset to use chunk_size (int): Maximum number of characters per chunk Returns: numpy.ndarray: The generated audio as a numpy array """ # Split text into sentences import re sentences = re.split(r'(?<=[.!?])\s+', text) chunks = [] current_chunk = "" # Group sentences into chunks for sentence in sentences: if len(current_chunk) + len(sentence) < chunk_size: current_chunk += sentence + " " else: chunks.append(current_chunk.strip()) current_chunk = sentence + " " # Add the last chunk if it's not empty if current_chunk: chunks.append(current_chunk.strip()) print(f"Split text into {len(chunks)} chunks") # Process each chunk audio_arrays = [] for i, chunk in enumerate(chunks): print(f"Processing chunk {i+1}/{len(chunks)}") # Process text inputs = processor(chunk, return_tensors="pt", voice_preset=speaker_preset).to(device) # Generate speech speech_output = model.generate(**inputs) # Convert to audio audio_array = speech_output.cpu().numpy().squeeze() audio_arrays.append(audio_array) # Concatenate audio arrays import numpy as np full_audio = np.concatenate(audio_arrays) return full_audio# Example usage with a short excerpt from a bookbook_excerpt = """Alice was beginning to get very tired of sitting by her sister on the bank, and of having nothing to do. Once or twice she had peeped into the book her sister was reading, but it had no pictures or conversations in it, "and what is the use of a book," thought Alice, "without pictures or conversations?"So she was considering in her own mind (as well as she could, for the hot day made her feel very sleepy and stupid), whether the pleasure of making a daisy-chain would be worth the trouble of getting up and picking the daisies, when suddenly a White Rabbit with pink eyes ran close by her."""# Generate audiobookaudiobook = generate_audiobook(book_excerpt)# Play the audioipd.display(ipd.Audio(audiobook, rate=sampling_rate))# Save the audio filewrite("alice_audiobook.wav", sampling_rate, audiobook)print("Audiobook saved to alice_audiobook.wav")In this tutorial weve successfully implemented the BARK text-to-speech model using Hugging Faces Transformers library in Google Colab. In this tutorial, weve learned how to:Set up and load the BARK model in a Colab environmentGenerate basic speech from text inputUse different speaker presets for varietyCreate multilingual speechBuild a practical audiobook generator applicationBARK represents an impressive advancement in text-to-speech technology, offering high-quality, expressive speech generation without the need for extensive training or fine-tuning.Future experimentation that you can trySome potential next steps to further explore and extend your work with BARK:Voice Cloning: Experiment with voice cloning techniques to generate speech that mimics specific speakers.Integration with Other Systems: Combine BARK with other AI models, such as language models for personalised voice assistants in dynamics like restaurants and reception, content generation, translation systems, etc.Web Application: Build a web interface for your TTS system to make it more accessible.Custom Fine-tuning: Explore techniques for fine-tuning BARK on specific domains or speaking styles.Performance Optimization: Investigate methods to optimize inference speed for real-time applications. This will be an important aspect for any application in production because the inference time to process even a small chunk of text, these giant models take significant time due to their generalisation for a vast number of use cases.Quality Evaluation: Implement objective and subjective evaluation metrics to assess the quality of generated speech. The field of text-to-speech is rapidly evolving, and projects like BARK are pushing the boundaries of whats possible. As you continue to explore this technology, youll discover even more exciting applications and improvements. Here is the Colab Notebook. www.ign.com
Arkham Horror: The Card Game is a series of deck-building card games that you can build and curate to your dark hearts delight. It's a cooperative game, so you and your fellow players are working together to take on the horrors that await. It's also part of the extensive world in the Arkham Horror Files family of board games, card games, and the newest, the nicely accessible Arkham Horror: The Role-Playing Game (see on Amazon) and subsequent newly released matching expansive rulebook. The card deck-builder Arkham Horror card game has been around since 2016. It has seen multiple expansions and revisions since its original printing. Buying the game is also not entirely straightforward outside of the base deck and campaign, as there are multiple ways to build, curate, and personalize your experience. It contains five pre-built investigator decks that let you dive into the first scenario: the Night of the Zealot campaign. This will give you a great, replayable taste of the Arkham Horror Card Game world. And if you like it, you have a huge selection of expansions to consider. Arkham Horror Card Game Expansions Arkham Horrors card game expansions are a bit different than the board game version. For the board games, expansion boxes include the full stories and scenarios as well as the new investigators to join in on the fun. The card game operates a bit differently. You can buy campaign expansions to add new stories to your game, and/or you can buy investigator expansions to add new characters. In other words, the new stories and new characters are sold separately. This might not be ideal for everyone, but it allows you to choose how much of an experience you want to invest in at a certain time, since you can play an expansion scenario without the newer investigators if you want to. You can buy a few starter investigator decks. These decks are less expensive and will give you more investigators to help you through your game. That said, these characters may not be as great as the investigators that youll find in the larger boxes that are connected to campaigns (see above). There are five to choose from: Harvey Waters, Nathanial Cho, Jacqueline Fine, Winnifred Habbamock, and Stella Clark. All of them are $16.99 but can be found cheaper and on sale from time to time.Scenario PacksArkham Horror: The Card Game - Murder at the Excelsior Hotel Scenario PackSee it at AmazonArkham Horror: The Card Game - Fortune and Folly Scenario PackSee it at AmazonArkham Horror: The Card Game - War of The Outer Gods Scenario PackSee it at AmazonArkham Horror: The Card Game - Machinations Through Time Scenario PackSee it at WalmartArkham Horror: The Card Game - The Labyrinths of Lunacy Scenario PackSee it at AmazonArkham Horror: The Card Game - The Blob That Ate Everything Scenario PackSee it at AmazonThere are also several standalone scenario packs available to purchase. These offer a smaller dose of action than the full expansions above. They cost $21.99 each. Murder at the Excelsior Hotel has been regarded as one of their more entry-level scenarios, so if youre looking for something smaller before committing to something bigger, like an expansion, you might want to check that one out.Other scenario packs include Fortune and Folly, Machinations Through Time, War of the Outer Gods, Labyrinths of Lunacy, and The Blob That Ate Everything.Return to BoxesReturn to boxes are revamps and additions to select campaigns. They require the base campaign set to play them, and while they are a bonus, they are best suited for folks who are serious about Arkham Horror: The Card Game. They are considered to be luxury items, essentially. And some of them are not the easiest to get a hold of. In fact, when going to create this list, I found that some were discontinued or not easily found through sites like Amazon or even Asmodee itself. Five return-to-boxes are currently available: Night of the Zealot (the campaign in the original starter box), Dunwich Legacy, Circle of Carcosa, Circle Undone, and Forgotten Age. Some enthusiasts say that Forgotten Age fixes some of the complexities in the original expansion. As you can see, when you click the name of Night of the Zealot, these are out of print, so collectors may find them difficult to come by.Parallel Investigator PacksParallel investigators are alternate versions of investigators that have abilities different from those of their original counterparts, including enhanced abilities and stats. Like Return to Boxes, these are not as easily found at big retailers. Collectors will have to look around for them to get them. The Bottom LineIf you are a fan of Lovecraft mythos-themed games, Arkham Horror is a universe youll absolutely want to explore. One awesome thing about Arkham Horror: The Card Game is that you can play it as a solo game, as well as with friends. The universes and iterations of games make for lots of capacities for adventure, with seemingly endless replayability for several of them. That said, like the board games, the card games absolutely veer on the more difficult side. They have quite a bit of chance, which can drastically increase replayability as well as frustration. Setup and learning time can also take a few minutes. Youll find that the card games are easier to set up than the board games, even without expansions, which makes the journey through less painful. A beloved classic known for its easy handling and forgivingness is ready to take to the sky in Microsoft Flight Simulator.Born of the Golden Age of Flight:In 1931, in the heart of the Golden Age of Flight, three Brazilian-based aviation pioneers founded Empresa Aeronutica Ypiranga (EAY), an aircraft company. Their collective dream was to build aircraft that would ultimately be embraced by the growing number of people inspired by the prospect of flight.Their first offering was the EAY-101, an analogue of the DFS Zgling, a German single-seat, high-wing sailplane. EAY then began their next initiative, a powered high-wing airplane that could be used as a trainer as well as a general-purpose flyer. Engineers copied the design of the Taylor Cub, a machine developed and manufactured by the US-based Taylor Aircraft Company. Called the EAY-201, the tandem 2-seat airplane was powered by a French-made Salmson 9AD 40-horsepower radial engine. It performed just as intended: it was easy to take-off, forgiving in the air, and simple to land. The CAP-4 Paulistinha:EAY built just five EAY-201 models before Companhia Aeronutica Paulista (CAP) purchased the company. CAP took the EAY-201 design and added a more powerful engine to create the CAP-4 Paulistinha. The CAP-4 retained the meaningful traits of the original EAY-201 and added more power, resulting in greater speed and an improved climb rate. The CAP-4 has a fuselage constructed of a steel-tube frame covered in fabric. It features a strut-braced main wing, a standard empennage, and a fixed traditional undercarriage. It measures 21 feet, 10 inches in length, stands 6 feet, 5 inches tall, and has a wingspan of 33 feet, 2 inches. It is powered by a Franklin 4AC 4-cylinder, air-cooled, flat-four piston engine that produces up to 65 horsepower with an engine that turns a fixed-pitch, 2-blade, wood propeller. The aircraft has a range of 310 miles, a service ceiling of 13,000 feet above sea level, and climbs at 610 feet per minute. It cruises at 87 miles per hour and has a top speed of 96 mph.The CAP-4 Paulistinha was used by both civil and military customers for training and a general-purpose light aircraft. Flown primarily in Brazil, the CAP-4 was also exported to Brazils South American neighbors of Chile, Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay and to Portugal.Ready for Microsoft Flight Simulator Pilots:Microsoft Flight Simulator and its partner, iniBuilds, have beautifully reproduced the CAP-4 Paulistinha for pilots to fly throughout the MSFS world. Aviators will find it wonderfully versatile, equally comfortable operating from the worlds largest airports or from impromptu air strips deep in the backcountry. The Microsoft Flight Simulator CAP-4 Paulistinha comes with six liveries: N505, PP-HCP, PP-HIY, PP-HLJ, PP-TJR, and PT-ZGA. It is one of the four aircraft the team promised to Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 consumers as a make good for their patience with the issues encountered during the launch. The plane is available for free today to all owners of Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024.For those wanting to fly the CAP-4 Paulistinha in Microsoft Flight Simulator, it is available today for $14.99 in the in-sim marketplace.ScreenshotsMicrosoft Flight Simulator and Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 are available for Xbox Series X|S and PC with Xbox Game Pass, PC Game Pass, Windows, and Steam, and on Xbox One and supported mobile phones, tablets, and lower-spec PCs via Xbox Cloud Gaming. • Breaking This Design Rule INSTANTLY Makes Your Space Cooler
    www.housebeautiful.com
Every item on this page was hand-picked by a House Beautiful editor. We may earn commission on some of the items you choose to buy.In many facets of the home, symmetry is inherently desirable: We want the art on our walls to sit straight, our tablecloths to hang in a correct proportion to the ground, and our nightstands to (mostly) match. Theres an intuitive sense of rightness when a space is in complete alignment. However, there can be a point at which mirror-image symmetry starts to feel imposing, unnatural, or even sinister (our mind cuts right to the hallway scene in The Shining)and surely, this is not the mood you wish to evoke in your space. While symmetry can look great in a photo, it isnt exactly a realistic way to live. Finding the right balance with artful asymmetry is a far more sustainable solutionand it turns out that many designers compose their spaces with this ethos in mind. We asked design experts to shed some light on how to thoughtfully add asymmetrical elements to a home without things getting too off-kilter.Related StoriesWhy We Default to Symmetrical DesignAndreas von Einsiedel//Getty ImagesA beach house in Goa, India features an almost exact symmetrical design.Symmetry may, in many cases, be the design rule de rigeur, but is there actually a reason for this?People feel comfortable with symmetry because we are, generally, symmetrical. Two eyes, two arms, two legs, says Sean Adams, dean of visual art and communication at ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena, California, and author of the book How Design Makes Us Think. Symmetry lets our mind rest. It is organized and predictable.Symmetrys logical structure is inherent and unchallenging. It is also the default for many interior design styles that prioritize simplicity. When I think of symmetry, I think of really classical architecture, I think of Colonial homesequal columns flanking a centered front door, says Heather Kane, an interior designer and owner of the rug brand Frances Loom. Indeed, in the architectural world, symmetry is not simply a matter of aesthetics but of structural soundness. In Classical Western design, symmetry was valued for its stability. Brick and stone construction lent to symmetrical building for engineering. Two symmetrical columns work better than one or three, Adams says. However, when the lens is widened to encapsulate a more global perspective, there is more variation. In Japan, where wood is plentiful, houses used sliding screens and doors. By moving a shoji screen to the right, one automatically creates asymmetry, Adams continues. It goes to show that asymmetry can be just as much a part of the natural order of things as carbon-copy exactness. While defaulting to symmetry in interior design can offer an easy jumping-off point, the design can feel flat and impersonal unless there is some other facet that adds interest. As Kane puts it, I think that symmetry is generally comfortable to the eye, but mirror-image symmetry can be a bit predictable and stale.Related StoryThe Intrigue of AsymmetryNickolas SargentThis Ohio cabin, designed by Betsy Wentz, has a spacious living room separated into three distinct zones. Asymmetry adds interest and dynamism for the many roles the space has.So, what happens when we intentionally throw off that predictability with an element of asymmetry?Asymmetry asks us to do math. It forces the viewer to rethink their expectations and determine negative space or numbers, Adams says. Its a better tool to engage the viewer; they need to do some work mentally, which creates a more intimate or personal experience.Working out these spatial calculations can be surprisingly satisfying for a viewer, especially in spaces where symmetry may traditionally reign, such as a dining room. This may look like playing with the scale of the wall art (or opting for pieces featuring asymmetrical compositions), choosing an unexpected pendant light arrangement, or opting for an eclectically styled tablescape that looks casual but not careless. Emily R. MarshallThe dining room in Heather Kanes home demonstrates a playful asymmetry in her choice of art, table decor, and accessories displayed inside the glass cabinets. There are very formal interiors where everything is very symmetrical, but in a more successful interior, youll always find an element of surprise or asymmetry, says Amy Sklar, principal designer of Amy Sklar Design. The element of asymmetry should enhance the symmetrical elements in the space and provide variety in terms of height, texture, and form.Kane, who self-describes as a maximalist at heart, frequently veers away from a regimented alignment, even if the room shes working with is quite classically symmetrical. In these spaces, I find myself working to shake things up a bit more.Related StoryHow to Create Artful Asymmetry in a SpaceGieves AndersonAn asymmetrically arranged living room in a renovated New York City loft designed by Nina Garbiras. The good news is that, even with its slightly mathematical undertones, achieving artful asymmetry in a room is far from rocket science. The process is a lot more loose and centered on sizing things correctly.Proportion, proportion, proportion, says Adams. I could do a thesis on the golden ratio, which is an exceptional asymmetrical tool...Trust your gut. When it feels right, it is for you, says Adams. Sklar notes that while symmetry is a useful anchor, she incorporates asymmetrical elements throughout her various spaces in order to make them more visually compelling. I am always thinking about the overall composition, she says.Emily R. MarshallHeather Kanes kitchen features a symmetrical layout thats balanced by an island with lower storage thats placed off-center.While most interior designers would likely want to avoid an awkward furniture layout or crooked display as much as possible, there are plenty of instances where asymmetry is a welcome, even refreshing element. This came up in Kanes recent redesign of her own space. In my current home, the kitchen wall is perfectly symmetrical, with a range in the middle and the counters and cabinetry being mirror images from the center. But then I have accessorized with a large pot and branches on one side and lower pieces on the opposite. It works! I think you need a bit of both for the feeling to be calm but interesting.AMY BARTLAMThis vignette in Amy Sklars home has tabletop decor and wall art arranged in a subtly asymmetrical way.Sklar, too, isnt opposed to creating asymmetry even in a space conducive to a mirror-image layout. In my own Los Angeles home, this custom built-in for my familys vinyl record collection is very symmetrical and placed centered beneath a window, she says. I created asymmetrical elements by changing up the art arrangement on either side of the windowto the left, a collected gallery wall, and to the right, a single, larger piece of art. Opting for that arrangement instead of a pair of lamps or similar art pieces on either side of the window adds that element of dynamism that every truly great room needs to sing. That said, there is always the risk of taking an off-kilter look too far. When the space isnt working well, Kane says, its usually because the balance (and sometimes symmetry) is off. The height, depth of color, or something else needs to be balanced out for it to work better.Balance and proportion were repeated by all three design experts as the key aspects to creating a space that feels inviting and even creatively stimulating. Otherwise, what you have is no longer charmingly askew or maximalist but simply a mess.Messiness is just throwing everything together and hoping it works. I call that spray and pray, says Adams.Rather, decorating a space can be an ongoing process of adding, subtracting, and scaling up and down. There may not be an exact formula for this type of intuitive math, but you really don't need one to achieve the best outcome. As Kane sums it up: Artful asymmetry, to me, is balance without rigidity. Some of the spaces Im most drawn to can feel messy, chaotic, lots of collected things everywhere...But the trick to making it beautiful is balance. Having calm, spare spaces surrounding the moments of madness creates symmetry of a kind. A bit of perfect and imperfect together is my ideal artful symmetry.Follow House Beautiful on Instagram and TikTok.

  • AirPods with cameras would be a good match for the promised contextual Siri
    9to5mac.com
According to recent rumors, Apple has been exploring the idea of putting cameras in the AirPods. Although this project probably wont see the light of day any time soon, I cant stop imagining how AirPods with cameras would be a good match with the promised contextual Siri which was recently delayed by Apple.Apple working on AirPods with built-in camerasLets start with the rumors. Bloombergs Mark Gurman reported this week that Apple has been actively developing new AirPods with built-in cameras. Although this isnt the first report about AirPods with cameras, the report not only corroborates the rumor but also reveals more details about how these cameras would be used.Of course, when we talk about cameras, most people probably think about having lenses used to capture high-resolution photos and videos, just like the we do on the iPhone. But Im sure its not in Apples plans to let people take pictures by pointing their ears at someone. So what would these cameras be used for? Well, cameras are sensors, and they can be used for a lot of things. For instance, iPhones have an infrared camera in addition to the main front-facing camera. This second lens is used to capture the users face even in the dark, which makes Face ID work. With that in mind, we can think of a few possibilities.Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo once suggested that Apple wants to use the cameras in the AirPods to enhance the spatial audio experience by better detecting the users surroundings. Kuo also suggested that the cameras could enable in-air gesture control for AirPods, something that would be particularly useful for enhancing the Vision Pro experience, for example. These are Apples plans for future AirPods models after Powerbeats Pro 2AirPods with cameras would be perfect for Apple Intelligence and contextual SiriBut my biggest bet for AirPods with cameras is artificial intelligence. According to Bloomberg, Apple has been experimenting with combining these sensors in AirPods with AI to understand the outside world and provide information to the user. The idea is similar to what Meta glasses already have with Meta AI, but now in wireless earbuds.Imagine asking your AirPods things about the place youre in without having to take your iPhone out of your pocket. And why not give users crucial alerts, such as when theres a vehicle coming towards them. But theres one feature that would be a killer for these future AirPods, and that would be integration with the new contextual Siri. On iOS, the new contextual Siri will learn things about you based on your photos, chats, emails, calendar events, and more. Siri can then provide answers based on this personal context. Yes, I know this feature has been officially delayed by Apple, but imagine something like this for AirPods with cameras.Instead of using personal data from your device, Siri could use the cameras in the AirPods to capture and learn about the users surroundings. Then you could ask Siri not just about a place youre in at the moment, but about something you saw hours or even days ago.Of course, theres a huge privacy concern when it comes to always recording everything around you, but I believe Apple would be the right company to build a feature like this with privacy in mind. What about you? • Man Whose Daughter Died From Measles Stands by Failure to Vaccinate Her: "The Vaccination Has Stuff We Dont Trust"
    futurism.com
Image by Getty / FuturismThus far, there's only been one confirmed death in the measles outbreak spreading across North America and the father of the unvaccinated child who died of the preventable disease is expressing no regrets about failing to get her the jab.In a startling interview withThe Atlantic, the father of the six-year-old girl who became the first measles death in the United States in 10 years discussed the beliefs that led up to herdying from an infectious disease that was essentially eradicated at the turn of the last century.Identified only as Peter, the father at the heart of this tragedy is, like many others in Seminole, the small West Texas town at the center of the outbreak, a member of the traditional-minded Christian sect known as Mennonites. There's apparently nothing in that group's doctrine barring modern medicine, but like many other conservative religious groups, many Mennonites are vaccine skeptics."The vaccination has stuff we dont trust," Peter told The Atlantic. "We dont like the vaccinations, what they have these days. We heard too much, and we saw too much."Peter insists that measles is a normal part of life although for much of the country, it is not, and hasn't been for decades in the wake of generations of successful vaccination campaigns against measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR)."Everybody has it," the man told the magazine. "Its not so new for us."Those comments echo claims made by new Health and Human Services secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., who said during president Donald Trump's first televised cabinet meeting at the end of February that it was "not unusual" for measles cases to spike from time to time."We have measles outbreaks every year," the political scion claimed a claim that is only true now because anti-vaxxers like him and the group he used to lead have made people afraid to get them for fear of "injury" from these proven-safe inoculations.Though Kennedy has since changed his tune under increased scrutiny to handle the outbreak taking place on his watch, the father of the six-year-old girl claimed by the disease has not."Everybody has to die," he toldThe Atlantic'sTom Bartlett.Still, Peter appeared to become emotional after that admission, telling the columnist that it was "very hard" to deal with the "big hole" in his life resulting from the loss of his young child. It's impossible to imagine what the man is going through if only because it seems cruel to hold onto such regressive beliefs in the face of unnecessary death.More on measles: Anti-Vaxxers Aghast as RFK Jr. Admits That Vaccines Are Pretty FantasticShare This Article

  • OpenAI Shares Image of Mysterious Black Orb
    futurism.com
In a cryptic post, OpenAI appears to be pondering an orb.Over the weekend, the official X account for the company's AI chatbot ChatGPT posted a black-and-white image showing a large blacked-out orb over what appears to be rolling hills filled in with smaller, grey balls underneath and no context at all besides that.Given the complete lack of an explanation, we can't say for sure how or why it was created. But that didn't stop users on X to hazard a guess. From suggestions that it might be a "torment nexus" or related to "Roko's Basilisk,"to folks pointing out how closely it resembles the "Damnation" card from "Magic: The Gathering," theoriesran rampant.Perhaps the biggest clue, however, is the logo that accompanied the release of ChatGPT's voice mode last year.As TechCrunch reported last May, the interface of the voice-activated version of OpenAI's flagship chatbot features you guessed it a large black dot, which morphs into smaller ovals that act as waveforms when it responds aloud.A few months later, the company dropped an "advanced" version of its voice mode, which features flowing blue and white inside the dot instead of the standard inky black.According to former OpenAI CTO Mira Murati, who spoke during the company's Spring Event last year, the goal was for users "not to focus on the UI at all."That may be somewhat difficult, however, given that standard voice mode's black dot looks a whole lot like HAL 9000, the murderous AI from "2001: A Space Odyssey" that also existed as a circle inside a rectangle. For us, meanwhile, the first thing that came to mind was WorldCoin, the strange crypto/biometric project launched by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman two summers ago that used a large silver orb to scan eyeballs in exchange for a bit of bespoke cryptocurrency. Now banned in multiple countries (including the United States), WorldCoin wasfascinating enough to us atFuturism that this reporter had her eyeball scanned by the sphere in July 2023 and did so without getting any crypto in exchange, because American financial regulators don't allow WorldCoin to trade in the US.We're still not entirely sure what exactly OpenAI is suggesting. Is the company about to drop an update for the standard voice mode of ChatGPT? Does the image suggest an imminent UI change?Or could this mean that ChatGPT is going to get better at making ASCII art of orbs? As of right now, that's still proving to be quite a struggle. We've reached out to OpenAI to ask what's up with this strange orb, but we have yet to hear back.Share This Article
