Mark your calendarsThe big N has joined Sony and Microsoft as an official Summer Games Fest partner, sparking hopes for a big game reveal for the Switch 2.
Next week is going to be an exciting time for gamers, since not only is the Nintendo Switch 2 coming out but Summer Game Fest, Geoff Keighley’s replacement for the long-dead E3, takes place almost immediately after.
The event kicks off only a day after the Switch 2’s launch on Friday, June 6, and will run across the whole weekend, and is set to feature over 60 different publishers and developers.
A lot of the usual names will be in attendance, including Sony and Microsoft, but surprisingly so is Nintendo, making this the first time it’s been an official partner since 2022.
Considering Nintendo was a no-show at the previous two Summer Game Fests, its appearance this year naturally sparks theories that it’ll have something to announce during the showcase portion on Friday.
What will Nintendo show at Summer Game Fest 2025?
Many fans have already been hoping that Nintendo has a secret Switch 2 game planned for this Christmas, especially after the recent confirmation that Pokémon Legends: Z-A – which is coming to both the original Switch and Switch 2 – will launch this October.
The period afterwards is notably lacking any major Nintendo releases, particularly Switch 2 exclusives. Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, another cross-gen title, is meant to launch this year, but while it’s likely to be a critical hit the series has never been a big seller.
There are also Switch 2 exclusives Hyrule Warriors: Age Of Imprisonment and Kirby Air Riders, but they seem even lower profile and strange choices to release in the launch year.
While Nintendo is unpredictable, it’s still hard to imagine it saving any major reveals for an event like Summer Game Fest, rather than one of its own Nintendo Directs.
It typically has Nintendo Directs every June and it is rumoured one could air next week, after the Switch 2’s launch – possibly even as a part of Summer Game Fest.
The most likely explanation though, is that Nintendo is simply attending to promote the Switch 2 and the games it has already announced. As such, it wouldn’t be surprising if Nintendo’s only contribution to the Summer Game Fest showcase was a new montage and some kind of on stage appearance.
What other games will be shown at Summer Game Fest 2025?
At the time of writing, no new reveals are confirmed or even heavily rumoured for Summer Game Fest, although the list of attendees is promisingly long.
Microsoft will certainly have new announcements at its annual Xbox Games Showcase on Sunday, June 8, which will be followed by an in-depth look at The Outer Worlds 2.
With any luck, Microsoft will have new trailers for games like Perfect Dark, Gears Of War: E-Day, Fable, and maybe even a new Halo.
As for Sony, while PlayStation is listed as one of Summer Game Fest’s partners, it’s suspected it won’t have any big first party reveals for the occasion.
Instead, it’s rumoured that Sony will have a smaller scale State of Play later this summer, or possibly not until autumn.
But what about third party companies? Hopefully, Capcom’s presence means a Resident Evil 9 reveal is around the corner, even though it doesn’t look like the game will be out till 2026 at the earliest.
Square Enix has at least two big games fans hope to see at the show: the long rumoured Final Fantasy 9 remake and Kingdom Hearts 4.
There is some circumstantial evidence for both making an appearance, but that’s all there is to go on. The third Final Fantasy 7 Remake game is also a possibility.
A Persona 4 remake from Sega and Atlus could very well show up at either the Summer Game Fest showcase or the Xbox one.

The remake’s been rumoured for a while, but just recently one of the original game’s voice actors, Yuri Lowenthal, gave its existence away by revealing he won’t be coming back for it.
His social media post has been deleted now, but one of his co-stars, Erin Fitzgerald, has since corroborated it by saying she’s being replaced too.
Hideo Kojima’s guest appearance guarantees new footage for Death Stranding 2: On The Beach, especially since it launches on June 26. He may also have something to show for OD, the new horror game he’s working on for Xbox.
At the very least, we can rule out seeing anything for his new stealth game Physint since Kojima admitted it won’t be ready for another five or six years.

  • Hideo Kojima explains Metal Gear successor Physint only exists because everyone wants him to make a new MGS game

Hideo Kojima may not be making another Metal Gear Solid game, but he might as well be. As the video game auteur wraps up Death Stranding 2, the game director is in the early stages of developing two games, his cinematic horror game OD and his espionage title Phsyint.
In an interview with EDGE Magazine, Kojima explained that he came up with the idea for the game when he was sick during the COVID-19 pandemic. The upcoming PlayStation exclusive was dreamt up while he was recovering as he saw the fan fervour for him to return to the Metal Gear series.
Psyint is made for Metal Gear fans
Speaking to the magazine, via GamesRadar, Kojima explained that he always has “lots of new ideas” that we wants to create. For example, the game director has ideas for a Death Stranding 3, although he won’t be the one to create it.
For Physint, Kojima was inspired by the fans always clamouring for him to return to Metal Gear Solid after the infamous fallout between the creator and Konami.
“When I became sick during the pandemic, I realised that a lot of people wanted me to make something like Metal Gear,” Kojima explained. “That’s when I had the idea for a new espionage game. I reflected, and thought the idea was good.”
Kojima explained that he discussed the idea with Sony and “explored many options” to return to the espionage genre. After these discussions—which the creative didn’t explain—they “agreed on doing Physint”.
The “brand-new, original IP” is described as a “next-generation action espionage game” that’s also “a portmanteau of physical intelligence”. Not much is known about the upcoming title, but many believe the game will put much more of a focus on the supernatural elements that were teased within the Metal Gear franchise.
Earlier this year, Kojima explained that the game will need five or six years of development time after Death Stranding 2 releases, likely putting the game’s release date sometime in 2030.Subscribe to our newsletters!

  • Physint Was Conceptualised Because Fans Want Hideo Kojima to Make a Game Like Metal Gear

While Kojima Productions might be adding the finishing touches on Death Stranding 2: On the Beach leading up to the title’s June 26 release date, director Hideo Kojima has also started talking about the studio’s next project – Physint. In an interview with Edge Magazine, Kojima spoke about how he came up with the idea for Physint when he was unwell during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Kojima explained that the idea to work on Physint after Death Stranding 2: On the Beach occurred to him because he believed that his fans want him to make a game like something in the Metal Gear franchise.
“Of course, I have lots of new ideas that I want to create,” Kojima said. “But when I became sick during the pandemic, I realised that a lot of people wanted me to make something like Metal Gear. That’s when I had the idea for a new espionage game. I reflected, and thought the idea was good.”
Kojima also spoke about discussing the concept of Physint with Sony, and the company agreeing. “We explored many options, and we agreed on doing Physint,” he said.
However, it is worth noting that Physint is still likely quite some time away. The game was officially announced back in February 2024. During the announcement, Kojima had said that the title will blend various aspects of games and film together, which likely means that Physint will be more similar than not to older Metal Gear titles.
“I cannot tell you so much now, but we plan to bring together cutting-edge technology and talent from around the world to create,” Kojima said. “Of course, it is an interactive game, but it is also a movie at the same time, in terms of look, story, theme, casting, acting, fashion, and sound. With this title, we hope to transcend the barriers between film and video games.”
Kojima’s asistant, Ayako Terashima, has also revealed earlier this month that Physint will take “another five or six years” before it comes out.
In discussing his decision to work on an espionage-based game, Kojima spoke about wanting to work on something new after leaving Konami, which he did with Death Stranding. However, the pull for him to create a new game in the vein of Metal Gear was too strong owing to fans of Kojima’s titles from all over the world.
“And since, there have been a lot of new ideas,” Kojima said back in 2024. “But in the last eight years, every day on social media, from users all around the world, people have been asking me to create another Metal Gear and stuff like that.”
“Having said that, if the users desire it so much, I thought I should change my priorities a bit. I still want to do new things, but I decided to make an action-espionage game.”
Death Stranding 2: On the Beach will be the next major title by the studio, after which, work is expected to begin on Physint as well as horror title OD.

  • This week was low-key the worst in modern video game history – Reader’s Feature

Marathon – just one of the problems highlighted this weekA reader is disturbed by the amount of bad news in the video game world at the moment, especially as most of it involves issues that have been brewing for many months.
We are in a strange situation right now with video games, where almost all the news is terrible and yet great games continue to be released. This has the side effect of masking the serious issues from many gamers, who either don’t know or don’t care about what’s really going on.
As long as games as good as Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 and Monster Hunter Wilds are still coming out then everything must be fine, right? Wrong.
What disturbed me this week, while reading the Metro, is that apart from job cutsit had examples of all the biggest problems going on. What I found extra worrying is not only did they happen all at the same time but they’re all long running issues that show absolutely no sign of being fixed.
Perhaps the most obvious problem was the growing inevitability of £80 becoming the default price for big name games. At this point it’d be a victory if it only increases to £80, because GTA 6 will almost certainly be more.
What was so awful about this week’s news is that we had two big industry figures telling us that actually we shouldn’t complain, we should get a second job to afford the games and just eat the cost.
I wouldn’t necessarily expect better from someone like Randy Pitchford, but hearing the ex-Sony guy saying that we shouldn’t complain just shows how out of touch these execs and decision makers are. Increasing costs will lower the number of games people buy and that means a lot of titles and companies are just going to have the door slammed in their faces.
People’s money is not going to stretch as far as it used to and that is going to be a big problem for some games. Many are already predicting Marathon will either be a flop or just cancelled before it gets a chance, and it’s not hard to see why. Nothing about it looks appealing and Sony seeming to be looking for any excuse to shut down Bungie completely, at the loss of hundreds of jobs.

Oh, and the reason for Bungie’s downfall? Corporate greed, according to the people that used to work there. That’s not exactly shocking news but there it is in black and white: all these problems could’ve been avoided if Bungie’s bosses had thought of the company first and not themselves.
But then we also had the revelation that the boss of Take-Two doesn’t play video games and has no interest in trying out GTA 6, even though he totally could. This is also a massive non-surprise and probably very common in the games industry, where decisions are made on a spreadsheet and not from a place of passion or ambition.
Sometimes they just seem to lack basic competence though, such as the lack of any plan for when games become too expensive and time consuming to make – a problem they must have seen coming years ago. This was illustrated perfectly this week by Hideo Kojima saying his Metal Gear spiritual sequel won’t be out for five or six years, even though he announced it over a year ago.
The amount of time it takes to make a game is out of control, but nobody is doing anything about it. And then to finish we had the rumour that Sony is only going to have a State of Play this summer, not a full showcase, or possibly have nothing at all in terms of not-E3 events. Thereby setting us up for another 12 months of no major announcements and only one or two releases.

I don’t want to get anyone down, but I do think it’s important to point out that just because good games are still coming out it doesn’t mean that it’s not chaos behind the scenes, which ultimately is only going to lead to even greater disaster if none of the problems are dealt with.

  • Hideo Kojima’s Metal Gear spiritual successor won’t be out this decade

Death Stranding 2 – before anyone says anything the decade ends in 2029, not 2030Arguably the most anticipated game from Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima is still at least five years away, despite being announced a year ago.
As well Death Stranding 2: On The Beach next month, Hideo Kojima’s studio Kojima Productions is working on two more projects.
One of these is an Xbox published game called OD, a collaboration between Kojima and Get Out director Jordan Peele which stars Sophia Lillis, Hunter Schafer, and Udo Kier. The horror project was officially revealed in 2023, but nothing has been shown since.
The other is Physint, a Metal Gear spiritual sequel which was announced in January last year. Unlike OD, no footage has ever been shown of the game, and there’s a very good reason for that – it’s still many years away.
Speaking in an interview with French magazine Le Film Français, Kojima was asked about the upcoming film adaptation of Death Stranding from A24, and whether he’d like to direct a film himself.
‘Oh, yes!’ Kojima replied. ‘I received many offers after leaving Konami.’
However, don’t expect a Kojima film anytime soon, as the developer wants to finish Death Stranding 2 and Physint before he even considers switching mediums.
‘Besides Death Stranding 2, there is Physint in development,’ Kojima said. ‘That will take me another five or six years. Maybe after that, I could finally decide to tackle a film. I grew up with cinema. Directing would be a kind of homage to it. Besides, I’m getting older, and I would prefer to do it while still young.’
While it’s unclear why Kojima didn’t mention OD, it’s possible he’s been told by Sony not to talk about the project while promoting Death Stranding 2, as it’s published by Xbox – although it’s unknown if it’s a console exclusive or not.

    More Trending

Considering OD was announced before Physint, it’s safe to assume the former will be the next game from Kojima Productions, which implies Physint hasn’t made it past pre-production yet.
While Kojima’s love for movies is clear in his games, an interview last week suggested he had been advised to stick to video games, by film director friends Guillermo del Toro and Nicolas Winding Refn.
In that same interview, Kojima explained how he has a USB stick filled with game ideas, so his studio could have a secure future after he dies. He’s currently 61 and so could be 66 or older before Physint is ever released.
Death Stranding 2: On The Beach is set to launch on PlayStation 5 on June 26, 2025.

Hideo Kojima's forthcoming espionage game Physint won't be released for quite a few years yet.
Kojima's next game, Death Stranding 2, is on the cusp of release, but Physint is already in development alongside Xbox horror game OD.
He even wants to create a film as well, but these game projects are a priority first. "Besides Death Stranding 2, there's Physint in development," Kojima told French magazine Le Film Français. "It'll take me another five or six years. But maybe after that, I could finally decide to tackle a film."

8 Things You Need To Know About Death Stranding 2: On The Beach - Hands On Preview, New Gameplay. Watch on YouTube
He continued: "I grew up with cinema. Directing it would be a kind of homage to it. Besides, I'm getting older, and I'd prefer to do it while I'm still young."
Kojima is now 61 years of age, meaning Physint won't be released until he's into his late 60s and, at this rate, a film won't be likely until he's in his 70s.
And with a few years to go until Physint, does that mean it could release on Sony's next console? Back in 2022, a confidential document suggested the company wouldn't expect a PlayStation 6 until at least 2027. Of course, that may have changed to even later now.
Kojima first announced Physint in 2024, describing it as "the third, new original IP since the establishment of Kojima Productions" and a "completely new 'Action Espionage' for the next-generation". Many fans are expecting it to rival Metal Gear, the series Kojima is most known for.

Death Stranding 2 certainly has more than a shade of Metal Gear to it, both in its expanded combat options and its story themes.
At a recent preview for Death Stranding 2, Kojima mentioned the desire from fans for a new Metal Gear game inspired Physint.
"Of course, I have lots of new ideas that I want to create," he said. "But when I became sick during the pandemic, I realised that a lot of people wanted me to make something like Metal Gear. That's when I had the idea for a new espionage game. I reflected, and thought the idea was good. I took it to Sony and they were incredibly supportive. We explored many options, and we agreed on doing Physint."
Still, he told Edge Magazine he's not "interested in appealing to the mass market", after test reviews for Death Stranding 2 came out positively.
"Sony is pleased, of course, but I do wish it was a bit more controversial," said Kojima. "Blockbuster films need an 80 percent approval rating - I don't want to make games like that. I'm not interested in appealing to the mass market, or selling millions of copies. That's not what I'm aiming for."

"But when I became sick during the pandemic, I realised that a lot of people wanted me to make something like Metal Gear. That's when I had the idea for a new espionage game. I reflected, and thought the idea was good. I took it to Sony and they were incredibly supportive. We explored many options, and we agreed on doing Physint." Still, he told Edge Magazine he's not "interested in appealing to the mass market", after test reviews for Death Stranding 2 came out positively.

  • Hideo Kojima Shares Update on Metal Gear Successor Physint

Hideo Kojima has recently revealed that Physint, the spiritual successor to his massively popular espionage franchise Metal Gear, will take another five or six years to develop. Even though that’s quite far off, Metal Gear fans should be excited that Kojima is still planning content somewhat related to the iconic franchise—but that’s not all, as the famed game director also touched on his future as a movie director.

  • Physint Requires “5 or 6 Years” to Develop, Says Hideo Kojima

Death Stranding 2: On the Beach is shaping up to be one of 2025’s biggest games and a strong follow-up to the original. However, Kojima Productions has two other projects – the horror-focused OD published by Xbox Game Studios and Physint, a new stealth action IP with Sony.
Director Hideo Kojima noted how both titles faced development hurdles due to the SAG-AFTRA Strike, but he’s seemingly provided a window for Physint’s release. And it’s a ways off.
On Twitter, Ayako Terashima, Kojima’s assistant, posted a short clip of him flipping through Le Film français to a recent interview. Resetera’s Red Kong XIX extracted the text from the section in question and translated it through DeepL, where Kojima discusses Physint taking “another five or six years.”
When asked if he’d like to direct a film someday, Kojima responded, “Yes, I would! I had many offers after I left Konami, with serious conditions for developing games in my independent studio. Alongside Death Stranding 2, there’s Physint in development. It will take me another five or six years.
“But maybe after that, I’ll finally decide to make a film. I grew up with cinema. Directing would be a kind of tribute to it. What’s more, I’m getting on in years, and I’d rather do it while I’m still young!”
If Physint launches by 2030 or 2031, it could be on the PlayStation 6. Regardless, there’s plenty of time to learn more, including its final name, story, and mechanics.
In the meantime, head here to learn about how Kojima considers Death Stranding 2: On the Beach an updated version of Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain. The PS5 exclusive launches on June 26th.
