Marcin AmbrozikFossil claw prints found in Australia were probably made by the earliest known members of the group that includes reptiles, birds and mammals, according to a study published in Nature today. The findings suggest that this group — the amniotes — originated at least 35 million years earlier than previously thought.Early amniotes evolved to lay eggs on land, because they were encased in an amniotic membrane that stopped them drying out. Before this study, the earliest known amniote fossils had been found in Nova Scotia, Canada, and were dated to the mid-Carboniferous period, about 319 million years ago. Manus (front foot) prints are shown in yellow; pes (hind foot) prints are shown in blue.Grzegorz NiedzwiedzkiThe three sets of tracks in the study have clear footprints with indentations from claws, a feature of reptiles but not of amphibians. “Having these hooked claws on the trackways indicates they’re definitely a reptile-like animal,” says John Long, a palaeontologist at Flinders University in Adelaide, Australia.There are no marks of dragging bellies or tails, and the authors suggest that the amniotes that left the tracks were able to keep their bodies and tails off the ground while they walked on land. But Salisbury questions that interpretation, because it would mean the animals had developed sophisticated structures for complex locomotion, which would be surprising given how early they are. “It seems more likely that the tracks were made by an animal that was ‘punting’ in shallow water, rather than walking on land,” he says.Common ancestorUntil now, evidence suggested that the last common ancestor of modern amphibians and amniotes lived around 352 million years ago. But if the ancestors of reptiles existed during the early Carboniferous, their split from amphibians must have occurred even earlier, says Long. Dating by the team suggests that the groups diverged in the Devonian period, about 380 million years ago.To estimate the probable time of divergence, Long and his colleagues used several dating methods. One included geological evidence from radioactive decay in volcanic rock layers above and below the fossil tracks. They also used molecular phylogenetics, which compares similarities and differences in the DNA of living species to estimate their evolutionary relationships and how recently their last common ancestor lived.The discovery could also shift the origin of amniotes to the Gondwana landmass. This formed the southern portion of the Pangaea supercontinent and gave rise to multiple current landmasses, including Africa and Australia. Previously, the earliest known amniotes were found in North America, leading palaeontologists to think that the group originated in the Northern Hemisphere. The home is part of a handsome cluster of nine properties, including five townhouses originally designed by South African architect Ted Levy, Benjamin & Partners in the late 1960s, representing a key part of progressive post-war design thinking in London's built history. Externally, each of the neighboring homes appears uniformly designed with subtle reference to Cape Town coastal developments in the 50s and 60s, but interiors have since been sporadically renovated, and the majority of them stripped of their modernist character. As long-time followers of the practice and admirers of previous completed projects, including Canyon House, the clients appointed Studio Hagen Hall in 2021 for its approachability, extensive experience in modernist restorations, and ability to deliver technically challenging architecture with warm, sensitive, and timelessly crafted interiors. Studio Hagen Hall was initially appointed to lightly refurbish the home, involving only the kitchen, bathrooms, and windows, but on careful inspection, realized that the home's true potential lay in much wider renovation. Studio Hagen Hall proposed a bespoke restoration encompassing the whole house that would improve operational efficiency and reduce overall project costs in the long term, and ultimately introduce a more sophisticated and pragmatic series of living spaces to suit a functional, life-long home.Save this picture!Alongside the aesthetic and energy-improvement brief for Pine Heath, spatial planning needed much consideration throughout the property. The new arrangement lays out a defined relationship between indoor and outdoor zones. A more logical connection is re-established between the entrance, kitchen, and living areas, and large amounts of storage and multi-purpose functionality are introduced into these communal spaces. Previously a three-bedroom home, Studio Hagen Hall has utilized the property's five stories to deliver a cleverly and subtly zoned floor plan, balancing social family space with distinct areas for rest, utility, work, and play. It now comprises an additional fourth guest bedroom suite-cum-gym in the basement, plus a new office and guest sleeping pod in the eaves of the property. The original central stairwell and timber-clad ceilings acted as a cue to reinstating the modernist characteristics of Pine Heath. In the bedrooms, old doors and openings have been replaced with floor-to-ceiling pocket doors maintained at 2.5 meters high, and subtly re-aligned to allow perfect views all the way from the front to the back of the house. Storage spaces in the bedrooms, once running laterally, now run perpendicular so that windows and views are completely unfettered and viewed through deep timber-lined portals. On entry, visitors are greeted by a generous hallway and a built-in cloak area complete with a bench, with direct vistas reaching the terraced patio and communal gardens to the rear of the home. Navigating this visual journey, occupants are carried along acute horizontal datum lines, and a tile grid that continues throughout the whole house; window sills, joinery, and spaces with angular changes cut at 45-degree angles, highlight Studio Hagen Hall's meticulous and exceedingly satisfying approach to spatial design.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture!The new bespoke kitchen nods to the client and Studio Hagen Hall's shared interest in quality craftsmanship, showcased in dynamic, yet sensitive, material detailing. Custom-designed and milled sapele handles mirror existing mahogany accents throughout the house. Period details of the original modernist kitchen have been accentuated for contemporary use; textured, stippolyte glass cabinetry together with a sweeping curved timber fascia now envelopes the kitchen, aligning with the original horizontal window datum and framing the serving hatch to the dining area. Credit: Andrew Cunningham Story text Size Small Standard Large Width * Standard Wide Links Standard Orange * Subscribers only   Learn more Microsoft has continued to design, manufacture, and sell new Surface hardware since longtime team leader Panos Panay left the company for Amazon in late 2023, including both Intel- and Qualcomm-powered Surface Pro tablets and Surface Laptops. New smaller versions of both of these mainstays were introduced just a couple of weeks ago. But the weirder, more unique parts of the Surface lineup have been mostly neglected since Panay's departure. Late last year, Microsoft discontinued the Surface Studio all-in-one desktop, which was never updated consistently and started at a whopping $4,300. But it provided one of the few alternatives to the basic "monitor with a computer inside it" all-in-one design template. Now, The Verge reports that Microsoft stopped manufacturing the Surface Laptop Studio 2 earlier this month and that the PC will disappear after current retail stock is sold. Microsoft reportedly plans to officially announce the end-of-life status of the Laptop Studio 2 in June. The company will support the Laptop Studio with driver and firmware updates as necessary through at least October of 2029, in accordance with its six-year support lifecycle for Surface hardware. The Laptop Studio was originally introduced in October of 2021 alongside the 8th-generation Surface Pro tablet. It was a brand-new design, but it had spiritual predecessors in the form of the Studio desktop and the older Surface Book, a laptop whose screen could be removed entirely from its base to function as a standalone tablet. It was last updated in September of 2023, just after Panay announced he was leaving Microsoft. Like the Surface Studio desktop, the Laptop Studio's odd and innovative exterior was rendered less exciting by a high price and relatively underpowered interior. Before discounts, the Laptop Studio 2 starts at around $2,400 for a basic configuration with a 13th-generation Core i7 processor, 16GB of RAM, and 512GB of storage—integrated graphics and a fully loaded version with 64GB of RAM, a 2TB SSD, and a GeForce RTX 4060 GPU would normally run you over $4,300. Though experimental Surface designs like the Book and Studio rarely delivered great value for the money, they were at least unique attempts at new kinds of PCs with extra features for designers, artists, and anyone else who could benefit from a big stylus-compatible touchscreen. Microsoft's most influential PC design remains the Surface Pro itself, one of the few tablet PC design templates to outlast the Windows 8 era. It makes sense for Microsoft (or any PC company) to play it safe with established designs, but it does make the PC industry just a little less interesting. What’s better than one link in your bio? Two? How about three? Threads is now allowing users to add multiple links to their bios, outnumbering the amount of links X, formerly Twitter, allows people to add to their own profiles. Meta announced the new feature to Threads in a press release on Thursday, saying users will be able to add up to five links onto their bio. For content creators, this means they can add links to their podcasts, YouTube channels, Twitch channels, TikTok page, newsletters, articles, and more so that their followers can engage with their content outside of Threads. Threads / Meta In addition to having more links on their bios than the one link X allots, Meta is launching a weekly recap feature within Insights to give users a summary of how their links have performed week after week. In other words, they’ll be able to see how many people clicked on the links regardless of whether they shared those links in their bios or in their posts. They’ll also be able to compare how many posts they shared from one week to the next, total views they garnered, new follower count, and receive tips on way for how they can better leverage their platform to connect with the community their platform is based on. Recommended Videos Meta adding the ability for Threads users to add more than one link to their profiles comes nearly two months after the platform added a feature that allows users to add as much as 10 topics to their profiles. The idea behind the topics feature at the time was to boost discovery of other people and content creators who share the same interests as they do. They could also tag topics to their posts so that when other users click on them, they’re taken to a feed of other users talking about the same thing.

YouTube now has a chart that tracks the top 100 podcasts in the US. The Joe Rogan Experience took the number one spot during the week of May 5th to the 11th, followed by Kill Tony, Rotten Mango, and 48 Hours. YouTube will update the chart every Wednesday and rank each show by watchtime, according to a blog post from YouTube’s Steve McLendon. The chart will include playlists “designated as ‘podcasts’ by the creator in the upload process, and will not include playlists that contain only clips or Shorts.” Over the years, YouTube has established itself as one of the top platforms for listening to – or watching – podcasts. In February, YouTube announced that more than 1 billion people tune into podcasts on the platform each month, far more than the 100 million regular podcast listeners Spotify reported in 2023. YouTube will continue adding more features to the chart and expand it to more regions in the future, McLendon says.

It hasn’t been that long since Apple had no status at all in enterprise IT. Its products were used in some creative departments and at home, but that’s as far as things went. The iPod and iPhone changed all that, even while general exposure to powerful mobile tech transformed perceptions around what to expect from the tools you use at work. The Apple user experience is the company’s biggest not-so-secret weapon, and it is interesting that even decades since the first PCs appeared, Apple still delivers intuitive user experiences  people enjoy using. Consumer simple, enterprise ready Those user experiences have generated expectations, and as my old chum Dean Hager, former Jamf CEO liked to describe it, people entering the workplace wanted the systems they used there to be as easy and intuitive to understand as the Apple products they used elsewhere. Apple’s user experience eventually became something incoming enterprise employees expected — many would simply quit their job if they were using crummier tech at work than they were at home. At the end of the day, Apple won the enterprise one consumer user at a time. But the other piece to Apple’s success is that organizations that have deployed Apple products at scale have experienced significant improvements on their bottom line. Multiple reports tell us employees are happier using Apple products, they’re more productive using Apple products, and spend less on tech support on Apple products than on PCs. Staff retention rates improve even as productivity grows — and the reduced tech support costs make life easier for IT and dramatically reduce the Total Cost of Ownership of an Apple fleet.  How Apple wins for enterprise IT None of this came easy. Apple had to take its basic product (the Mac) and its OS X operating system and figure out how to best apply that tech to mobile devices. That’s what we began to get with the iPod and saw in living Technicolor with the iPhone; Apple took the power of computing and placed it inside the device you always have with you – your phone. Of course, the ability to run more complex applications on your iPhone made it possible for employees to get more work done using the device, which spawned the Bring Your Own Device wave that really began to express itself around 2010. Not only did employees want to be able to use the same platform at work as at home, but they also wanted to use the same mobile devices at work as at home. The biggest evidence of that was the abject failure of Windows Mobile as it showed people didn’t want to use the same PC they used at work in their mobile existences; they remained hooked on experience Apple’s ease-of-use.  They did then.  They do now. The evidence is everywhere You can see this is the direction of travel each time you read yet another report explaining Apple’s growing enterprise sales across all of its products, or the fast-proliferating number of Very Large Indeed Apple deployments at giant global companies. Not to mention that once employee choice schemes are put in place, the majority of employees seem to prefer Apple to any other platform. While it’s still early days on spatial computing, we can already see Vision Pro devices staking spaces across key industries as Apple takes what was once more or less the Mac experience and makes it both ambient and hyper-mobile. Spatial computing isn’t just about computing that surrounds you, it’s about computing that takes you there. Along this journey, Apple has thought deeply about what it offers and attempted to take down barriers to enterprise deployment. That’s why the company provides APIs for Mobile Device Management; that’s why it has high-grade security features I’m certain the company’s own CEO also uses, such as Lockdown Mode; that’s also why it remains so deeply committed to delivering regular software and hardware updates, so no enterprise professionals find themselves left insecure or abandoned on their workplace tech journey.  Want to do more? You can, thanks to the company’s’ rich set of developer tools, which provide a robust environment for enterprise development and integration.  Support and updates The fact that Apple’s hardware is reliable is also good for enterprise sales. Coupled with annual software updates that bring sometimes-exciting new features, user engagement remains high throughout the usable life of these devices, which now usually extends to an easy five years. Once that time is up, the resilience and reliability of the devices means they still fetch good value in the second-user markets; most major purchasers might also draw reassurance that the recycling and salvaging of the products will have some impact on their own carbon targets.  Enterprises also like reliability for another reason, it helps them plan ahead.  Not only do they know that it is unlikely Apple will make too many major changes (though we do experience smaller ones), but they also know that unlike Windows 11, you will not wake one morning to find your PC has been updated to a new operating system without consent. These little communications do count, particularly if you are running several hundred systems in your fleet. You also cannot ignore the impact of the CrowdStrike debacle on that lovely feeling of peace and calm enterprises perhaps enjoyed before it took place. Apple’s platform security may not be something we can take for granted any longer, but it still exists — and while it makes sense to stay watchful, it remains unmatched. Its major software updates remain free (at least until regulators utterly wreck the company’s business). That’s always an easy budget line item at the end of the day.  What Apple gets wrong It is interesting, given all that it gets right, the extent to which critics like to focus on what Apple gets wrong. Some of the most common criticisms could translate into easy wins for Apple: Yes, I think it should provide more in-depth granular information to assist enterprise IT deployments, but I would also argue that its free certification courses remain the best possible way to find the answers you need to begin managing larger or newer Apple deployments. Those courses are free, well-constructed and give you a thorough grounding for this work. Though I would really like Apple to give Configurator the power to register multiple devices at once – and a little more automation would come in useful to a lot of admins, particularly in the education sector.  But what’s super-interesting about so many of the criticisms made around Apple in the enterprise is that they tend toward being smaller, more granular problems that the company could conceivably resolve once it stops pouring all of its R&D resources into AI development.  And that’s my point, really — to quietly point out that the nature of the criticisms Apple’s current enterprise solutions receive actually reflect how successfully it has penetrated the sector. It is now being asked to solve really complex questions that reflect the myriad complexities of enterprise IT requirements. It won’t solve all of them overnight, but its progress in the sector since earlier this century suggests it will probably get around to resolving many of them, one challenge at a time. And, rest assured, while Apple never speaks about it, I’m confident that the company does actually read criticism; it just needs to be selective concerning which challenges to solve first. Summer's almost here. Bote, a company that makes "water lifestyle products," has a line of floating furniture for when you want to hang out in the drink. Each feature their "Magnepod" system, whereby you can magnetically attach the company's drinkware to the furniture. And because they're all inflatable, they break down for storage, making them easy to toss into car trunks and backpacks. Their Sling Chair seats one: Their Hangout Couch can seat three, and can be attached to create a floating conversation dock: And their circular Hammock series can seat a variable number. They come in 7', 10' and 15' diameters: Sure you can use these in a pool, but these look more at home in a proper body of water. Meaning yeah, you'll need that boat. The real move is to simply know someone who owns one. I hear the best two days of owning a boat, are the day you buy it, and the day you sell it.
