  • The Elder Scrolls 6: The Case For and Against Base Building
    gamerant.com
Bethesda Game Studios has had a fairly consistent relationship with base-building systems in its past few RPGs. Such systems have seen a good deal of evolution over the years, from their status as rudimentary novelties in Skyrim to their more ambitious implementation in Starfield, and theres good reason to believe that The Elder Scrolls 6 will continue the tradition in some way.

We are developing a game which is a non-real time game. The game has a slew of pop up windows drawn with DirectX. To try and speed up the development because those DirectX windows take so long to create I have been working to create some Windows API dialogs instead of the DirectX dialogs.I started with a Preferences dialog from the main menu. It is a little slow coming up, but it works OK. Next I was tasked with creating a sidebar on the main window. With the sidebar API dialog up

  • The best Windows laptops for 2025
    www.engadget.com
If youve held on to an aging Windows laptop for too long, its now a great time to upgrade. With all the hype around AI PCs, computer makers are rushing to release new designs featuring efficient new chips from Intel and AMD. And thanks to Microsofts Copilot+ initiative, which launched last year, were finally seeing decent notebooks powered by Qualcomms Snapdragon chips, which are leading to better battery life and lighter designs.Whether you need a premium ultraportable, a powerful gaming rig or a versatile mobile workstation, our current list of the best Windows laptops highlights our favorites that have been rigorously tested by our team. You may even find a Windows laptop that suits you better than an Apple MacBook if youre looking to make the switch. For those on a budget, check out our list of the best cheap Windows laptops to find great options that won't break the bank. What to look for in a Windows laptop Performance How much power do you actually need? Thats the main question you need to ask yourself when choosing a Windows laptop (or any computing device, to be honest). Its easy to overspend and get far more computer than you actually need, or skimp too much and find yourself with an under-powered processor and too little memory. Weve broken down our recommendations into a variety of product categories below, but generally youre looking to get a laptop with at least 16GB of RAM and a modern Intel Core Ultra or AMD Ryzen processor. If youre a gamer, youll also want to make sure you get a decent graphics card. (Thats all explained in our guide for best gaming notebooks.) What are AI PCs, Copilot+ and Arm-based laptops? Any computer that includes an NPU (neural processing unit) is an AI PC, since that chip can offload some tasks from the CPU and GPU. And since every chipmaker has rushed to join the AI bandwagon, most systems released today count as AI PCs. The exceptions are some higher-powered workstation and gaming laptops, which may have NPU-free chips, or extremely cheap notebooks running low-end chips. To make it easier to find premium AI PCs, Microsoft unveiled its Copilot+ program last year. It calls for notebooks with NPUs that support at least 40 TOPS of AI processing power, 16GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. The first batch of Copilot+ systems included the new Surface Pro and Surface Laptop, as well as the revamped XPS 13. To make things even more confusing, Copilot+ systems include PCs powered by Qualcomms new Snapdragon Arm-based CPUs, which can run modern Windows apps but may have trouble with older software and drivers. Display and webcams Regardless of whether a notebook has a touchscreen or a more traditional panel, we look for bright displays (300 nits or more) that are easy to use outdoors or in sunny rooms, with accurate colors and wide viewing angles. Screens with high refresh rates are great for competitive gamers (or anyone who wants smoother document scrolling), while those with wider color gamuts are important for content creation and video editing. And even if you dont plan on spending a ton of time on video calls, every laptop needs a decent webcam 1080p or higher is preferred. Ports and connectivity Even with advancements in cellular modems and Wi-Fi, dedicated ports for transferring data or connecting peripherals can make or break a laptop. Ideally, all but the thinnest and lightest systems come with three USB-C ports, while things like built-in SD card readers can be extremely handy when trying to import media from a camera. And if a notebook is saddled with a slow or outdated Wi-Fi modem (were looking for Wi-Fi 6 or later), thats basically an immediate disqualification. Battery life It doesnt matter how powerful a laptop is if it conks out when you need it the most. Typically we look for runtimes of at least ten hours on a charge, but when it comes to good battery life, longer is always better. That said, on gaming machines with thirsty graphics cards, you may have to settle for a bit less. And on bigger machines, its also important to consider if the system can charge via USB-C or if it needs a larger, proprietary power brick. Best Windows laptops for 2025 Windows laptop FAQs What's the difference between a Windows laptop and a Chromebook? The main difference between a Windows laptop and a Chromebook lies in their operating systems. Windows laptops run on Microsofts Windows OS, whereas Chromebooks use Googles Chrome OS. Aside from using different operating systems, performance is one of the major differences between a Windows laptop and a Chromebook. Windows laptops can be equipped with powerful processors and discrete graphics, making them suitable for demanding tasks like gaming or video editing. Chromebooks, on the other hand, are generally optimized for speed and simplicity, focusing on lighter tasks like word processing and web browsing. In terms of software, Windows laptops support a range of desktop programs, whereas Chromebooks primarily use web apps or Android apps from the Google Play Store. Because of their differences, Chromebooks tend to be more affordable since they are primarily designed for basic, everyday tasks. Windows laptops can range in price from budget to premium, with the latter suitable for gaming, professionals or creatives. What's the difference between macOS and Windows? When it comes to macOS and Windows, theyre basically two different worlds in the realm of computers, each with its own personality. MacOS is sleek, minimal and feels pretty intuitive, especially if you like things that just work out of the box. Apple designs macOS to work in tandem with its hardware, so if you have an iOS device like an iPhone or an iPad, the whole ecosystem syncs up seamlessly. Windows is more like the jack-of-all-trades. It's known for being super flexible and customizable. Whether you want to tweak how things look or run a wide variety of software, Windows gives you that freedom. It's also more widely used in business settings, mainly because it's been around longer and is compatible with tons of different programs and hardware. Around the country, Tesla owners are disguising their cars with fake badges and joining Facebook support groups as protests against Elon Musk, the electric vehicle makers CEO, intensify. To throw his support behind his DOGE administrator, Donald Trump hosted a Tesla car show on the White House lawn, reading from a literal Tesla sales pitch. Before selecting a cherry red Model S, which retails for roughly $80,000, Trump took a tour of the Tesla. Sitting in the drivers seat, looking at the dashboard, he delivered the annoyingly hilarious line: Everythings computer!Trump: Wow Everythings computer pic.twitter.com/LjGoZD4Qk8 Acyn (@Acyn) March 11, 2025 The internet being the internet, jumped on it. • Space junk is clogging the atmosphereand its going to make weather forecasts and internet access much worse
    www.fastcompany.com
In the past five years, more satellites have been launched into Earths atmosphere than the preceding 60 years combined. And now, scientists believe that climate change is set to increase the number of old satellites that will turn into floating obstacles.Thats according to a study published last week in the Nature Sustainability journal by a team of aerospace engineers at MIT. The researchers examined how greenhouse gases are impacting Earths upper atmosphere and, in turn, the objects orbiting within it. They found that, as emissions increase, theyre actually altering the natural process that allows satellites to fall out of orbit and disintegrate, resulting in a kind of space junk pile-up.If this trend continues, it could have ripple effects for everything from weather tracking and broadband internet access to national defense.Captured by astronaut Don Pettit aboard the International Space Station, this long-exposure photograph showcases Earths city lights, the upper atmospheres airglow, and streaked stars. The bright flashes at the center are reflections of sunlight from SpaceXs Starlink satellites in low-Earth orbit. [Photo: NASA]How the atmosphere naturally removes space junkMost satellites are located within low Earth orbit, or around 400 to 1,000 kilometers above the planets surface. Under normal conditions, after these satellites reach the end of their lifespans (when their engines can no longer maintain enough velocity for orbit), natural atmospheric drag pulls them down to lower altitudes, where air molecules cause them to disintegrate before ever reaching the Earths surface. Its essentially the atmospheres natural space junk cleaning protocolbut climate change might be slowing it down.William Parker is a graduate student at MITs AeroAstro program, and he served as the lead author on the new study. Parker explains that greenhouse gases have a warming effect within the troposphere (the atmospheric layer closest to Earth), but in further layers, they actually have the opposite effect. Because greenhouse gases keep heat trapped close to the Earth, more distant layerslike the thermosphere, where the majority of satellites orbitare actually cooling down over time. That cooling leads to contraction, Parker says. The whole atmosphere is sort of shrinking. As the atmosphere shrinks, he adds, so, too, does the natural drag force thats supposed to pull satellites downward. That means that theres less atmospheric density for the satellites to experience, which means that we dont have this cleaning force in low Earth orbit that weve always had to rely on.Preventing a satellite debris pile-upAs the atmospheres natural cleaning force diminishes, satellite operators may soon encounter a significant build-up of debris in low Earth orbit.Experts theorize that, beyond a certain critical mass, such a build-up could lead to something called The Kessler Effect: a series of space collisions that snowball as debris increases.Just this past year, Parker notes, Space Xs satellite service Starlinkwhich operates around 60% of all active satelliteshad to perform 100,000 collision avoidance maneuvers to prevent space collisions. If we dont take action to be more responsible for operating our satellites, the impact is that there are going to be entire regions of low Earth orbit that could become uninhabitable for a satellite, Parker says.If nothing is done to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions, the MIT teams simulations show that the maximum satellite capacity in low Earth orbit could decrease by 50% to 66% by 2100. In a more likely scenario where some effective climate action is taken, Parker says the capacity is still predicted to drop by 24% to 33% in that same time frame.Currently, satellites play a central role in global weather tracking, access to internet service, online banking, national defense protocols, and more. If satellite operators have to spend more and more energy avoiding obstacles, providing those essential services will become increasingly difficultand expensive. Its going to mean that all of the products that we get from space are going to be degraded, because satellites now have a secondary objective, Parker says. The primary objective has always been to collect data or to provide some service, like connection to the internet. Now, the secondary objective is just to make sure that you dont get destroyed in a collision with a debris object. Its something that operators have only had to start worrying about in the last five to 10 years. The long-term solution is taking more action to eliminate greenhouse gas pollution. In the meantime, Parker says, satellite operators should try to operate at lower altitudes to ensure that theres enough drag to remove debris from the atmosphere, as well as taking proactive steps to return spacecraft from orbit before they can even become debris. He also believes that a real set of international space traffic management rules could help prevent overcrowding. There used to be this mantra in the space industry that space is big, and thats an excuse to not treat it with the respect that it should be treated with, Parker says. Thats outdated, and we need to do a better job at managing this resource that we have and sharing it in an equitable way.

  • Zaha Hadid Architects Unveils A Mid-Sized Tower That Blends Urban Design With Nature In Georgia
    www.yankodesign.com
Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA) has unveiled designs for a striking new skyscraper in Tbilisi, Georgia. The building features a sculpted, twisting form that enhances its visual appeal and also serves a functional purpose by creating outdoor terrace spaces for occupants. The Cityzen Tower is set to be constructed on the site of a former Soviet military headquarters and will be a key component of a larger neighborhood development project. While its exact height hasnt been disclosed, the tower will feature 42 floors, categorizing it as a mid-sized structure rather than a towering supertall.Designer: Zaha Hadid ArchitectsThe interior of the Cityzen Tower will span 57,000 square meters (approximately 613,000 square feet) and will feature office spaces on the lower levels, with residential areas occupying the upper floors. The terraces on the lower levels will be adorned with greenery, offering external social spaces for office employees. As the tower rises, these terraces transition into balconies for the residential apartments, providing scenic views of a nearby park and the city skyline. The design of the terraces is thoughtfully influenced by the Suns position and wind considerations.Informed by the rolling hills intersected with river valleys that wind through the undulating cityscape of Tbilisi, Cityzen Towers design by Zaha Hadid Architects echoes its context at the intersection of the citys urbanism and its natural environments, said the firm. Detailed local wind and solar analysis has also informed elements of the 42-story towers design to ensure optimal comfort for residents and visitors to Cityzens public plazas, outdoor terraces and recreational areas.Although constructing a large tower made of concrete, steel, and glass typically lacks sustainability, Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA) plans to minimize the environmental impact of the Cityzen Tower by employing several eco-friendly strategies. To reduce the buildings carbon footprint, ZHA will prioritize sourcing materials from local suppliers and incorporate recycled materials wherever feasible. The building will also feature a rainwater collection system, which will gather rainwater and repurpose it through an on-site reservoir, thereby conserving water resources. The greenery integrated into the buildings design will consist entirely of local plant species, which are naturally suited to the environment and, therefore, will not require additional irrigation systems. This approach enhances the buildings aesthetic appeal and also supports local biodiversity. The Cityzen Tower is scheduled for completion in 2028, marking a significant addition to ZHAs portfolio during an especially active period for the firm. Other incredible projects currently underway include the ambitious Napoli Porta Est Masterplan and the Shenzhen Institute of Financial Technology, both of which exemplify ZHAs commitment to innovative and sustainable architectural solutions. The post Zaha Hadid Architects Unveils A Mid-Sized Tower That Blends Urban Design With Nature In Georgia first appeared on Yanko Design.
