At 97, Endangered Tortoise Becomes Oldest First-Time Mom of Her Species With Four New Hatchlingsand Potentially More on the WayProud parents Mommy and Abrazzo are both nearly 100 years old, but theyre contributing to Galpagos tortoise conservation at Philadelphia Zoo The four hatchlings are eating and putting on weight before their public debut on April 23. Their clutch included 12 other eggs, which have yet to hatch. Philadelphia ZooThe worlds population of critically endangered Galpagos tortoises just got a little bigger. This week, Philadelphia Zoo is celebrating the hatching of four Western Santa Cruz Galpagos tortoises (Chelonoidis niger porteri). The baby reptilesall femalesare a beacon of hope for their species. Before the youngsters hatched, U.S. zoos had a combined total of only 44 Western Santa Cruz Galpagos tortoises, so these newest additions represent a new genetic lineage and some much-needed help to the species population, says Ashley Ortega, who coordinates the captive Galpagos tortoise breeding program for the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), in a statement from the zoo.The eggs were laid by an elderly female named, fittingly, Mommy. But until now, she had never been a mother. Caretakers believe shes around 97 years oldwhich likely makes her the oldest first-time mom of her species. Biologists also consider Mommy to be one of the most genetically valuable Galpagos tortoises in the AZAs breeding program.Mommy has lived at Philadelphia Zoo for more than 90 years. After hatching in the wild in the Galpagos Islands, she was brought to Pennsylvania by a man named Milton W. Holden on April 23, 1932.At the time, she weighed 40 pounds. Today, she tips the scales at 284 pounds. Each baby tortoise weighs about the same as a chicken egg. Philadelphia ZooThe hatchlings father is Abrazzo, who is estimated to be around 96 years old. His origin story is a bit murky, but the first records for the turtle dad come from the Gladys Porter Zoo in Texas in April 1929, reports USA Todays Phaedra Trethan. Hes been at Philadelphia Zoo since December 2020, when he was transferred from the Riverbanks Zoo and Garden in South Carolina. When caretakers first introduced Abrazzo and Mommy in 2022, the two elderly tortoises didnt immediately hit it off. Abrazzo, it seemed, was out of practice. At first, it was clear that he didnt quite know what he was doing, says Rachel Metz, Philadelphia Zoos vice president of animal well-being and conservation, to the Washington Posts Andrea Sachs. He was backward. But, eventually, Abrazzo and Mommythe two oldest animals at the zoofigured out how to mate. Starting in 2023, Mommy laid three clutches of eggs, but none of them hatched. Then, in November 2024, she laid another clutch. Zoo staffers collected the 16 billiard ball-sized eggs and incubated them at different temperatures, since the sex of tortoise hatchlings is affected by heat. Half were incubated below 82.4 degrees Fahrenheit to produce males, and half were incubated above 85.1 degrees to produce females.History in the Making! Critically Endangered Galapagos Tortoises Hatch at Philadelphia Zoo!Watch on The first egg hatched on February 27, followed soon after by three siblings. All the eggs that have hatched so far were incubated as females. But more could hatch in the coming weeks, according to the zoo.For now, the babies are being kept out of public view in the zoos Reptile and Amphibian House, under the watchful eye of the animal care team. Theyre eating and growing as expected, with each weighing a little less than three ouncesor about as much as a chicken egg.The hatchlings will be officially introduced to the public on April 23, which also coincides with Mommys 93rd anniversary at the zoo. Theyre expected to remain at the zoo for at least five years. The last time Western Santa Cruz Galpagos tortoises hatched at an AZA-accredited zoo was in 2019 at Abrazzos former home, the Riverbanks Zoo and Garden in South Carolina. San Diego Zoo, Zoo Miami and Honolulu Zoo also have breeding pairs of Western Santa Cruz Galpagos tortoises; Philadelphia Zoo also has another adult female named Little Girl, as well as two Aldabra giant tortoises (Geochelone gigantea) named Wilma and Betty. In the wild, an estimated 3,400 Western Santa Cruz Galpagos tortoises live on the southwestern tip of Santa Cruz Island, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature. They represent just one of several subspecies of Galpagos tortoises. Scientists believe these giant reptiles traveled from mainland South America to the remote volcanic archipelago roughly two to three million years ago, according to the nonprofit Galpagos Conservation Trust. Its not clear how they got to the Galpagos, which today are located roughly 600 miles west of Ecuadors coast. But, once they arrived, the giant tortoises ended up on different islands. Cut off from the mainland populationand from each otherthe tortoises evolved into 14 or 15 distinct subspecies. But their populations plummeted in the 18th and 19th centuries, as buccaneers and whalers nabbed tortoises for meat and oil.Lonesome George, the worlds last Pinta Island tortoise, died in 2012 at around 100 years old. Today, 13 subspecies remain, according to Philadelphia Zoo.Concerted conservation efforts are underway to help the archipelagos famous tortoises rebound. In addition to the breeding programs, scientists are taking steps to help protect the reptiles from introduced species. Rats, pigs, dogs and ants prey on tortoise eggs and hatchlings in the wild, while donkeys, goats, cattle and invasive plants disrupt their habitat. As for Abrazzo and Mommy back in Philadelphia, they may just be getting started. Scientists suspect Galpagos tortoises can live to be up to 200 years oldwhich means its possible the couple could become parents again. In the meantime, conservationists are hopeful that their first hatchlings will be a part of a thriving population of Galpagos tortoises on our healthy planet 100 years from now, says Jo-Elle Mogerman, the zoos president and CEO, in the statement.Get the latest stories in your inbox every weekday.

Microsoft brings Copilot Vision to Windows and mobile for AI help in the real world
Microsoft is bringing its Copilot Vision feature to Windows and mobile, moving it beyond the web. Copilot Vision was a big part of Microsofts Copilot redesign last year, but so far, it has been limited to Edge webpages to help guide you through what youre seeing.Copilot Vision will now be able to analyze real-time video from a mobile camera, allowing the AI assistant to offer tips for keeping plants healthy or decorating advice for your home. Microsoft is launching Copilot Vision inside the Copilot app for iOS and Android today, and a similar feature is also coming to Windows soon. The Copilot app on Windows is being updated to support Copilot Vision across your entire PC. This lets Microsofts AI assistant do things like coach you through using Adobe Photoshop features, or analyzing the photos and webpages youre looking at.This is different than Microsofts Recall feature on Copilot Plus PCs. Recall automatically takes snapshots if you enable the feature, whereas Copilot Vision is more like screen sharing an app or your entire desktop in a Microsoft Teams call.Copilot Vision on Windows will be available to Windows Insiders next week, and Microsoft says it will roll it out more broadly once testing is complete. The company is also updating Copilot with a host of new features today. The AI assistant now supports memory, personalization, web-based actions, podcast creation, deep research, and more. You can read about all of Copilots new features here. Related:

    Lazarus Episodes 1-5 Review
Itd be difficult for any TV series, let alone an anime series, to be greeted with higher expectations than Lazarus. And, as Lazarus proves, itd be equally difficult to live up to those expectations. The series comes from Shinichir Watanabe, creator of the undisputed anime masterpiece Cowboy Bebop. With action overseen by John Wick director Chad Stahelski and a soundtrack featuring original compositions by the tantalizing trio of Kamasi Washington, Floating Points, and Bonobos, it would seem Lazarus promises nothing but slick and exciting visuals, storytelling, and atmosphere. In the first five episodes, only some of those promises are fulfilled. The opening chapters of Watanabes mildly compelling mystery anime remain watchable not because of the style on display or how much we care about the characters, but because of its heightened, apocalyptic stakes. The beginning of Lazarus gives you no time to breathe: It instantly hits you with bucket loads of context and double-exposed imagery that define its vision of the future. The year is 2052, and a miracle painkiller called Hapna has exploded in popularity across the globe, ending humanitys relationship to pain and putting a large chunk of the population in a perpetual sleepwalk. Believing this was a mistake, the drugs creator, Dr. Skinner, announces that within 30 days, everyone who has ever taken Hapna will die. The sensory overload and intrigue surrounding this information is almost enough to paper over the clunky dialogue and poor acting (in the English version, anyway) that relays it. Dropping such a nuclear event in the first episode is a bold decision. My brain was flooded with curiosity as to how the world would react and questions of how this was even possible, and why someone would decide that genocide on this level was the answer. Its completely ridiculous, but Dr. Skinners speech announcing his intentions is packed with enough shock, intrigue, and mystery that it propelled me through the next four episodes despite some of the less interesting turns they take.Watanabe opts for a cold visual approach with Lazarus, with desaturated colors and metallic production design. That chilliness also reflected in the steely, detached members of the Suicide Squad-like team looking to get a cure from Dr. Skinner means that the plot and action need to deliver in order for the show to remain engaging. On this front, the results are mixed.Lazarus GalleryThe style of action on display is apparent from the scene that introduces Axel, an inmate being recruited for the dangerous mission at the center of Lazarus. Taking advantage of the situation, Axel uses his almost superhuman kung fu and parkour skills to escape, something he apparently has done over 100 times. The 2D animation is slightly aided by CG in these fight scenes, to great effect. It puts us extremely close to the action with punches flying right past us while still letting us understand whats happening on screen, thanks to the added mobility of the camera in CG. Even when the combat on Lazarus feels a little familiar Stahelskis blessing and curse, having now reshaped action filmmaking twice over as a stunt performer and coordinator in The Matrix movies and the architect of the John Wick franchise the way its presented still feels intense and spectacular.Yet theres still room for Lazarus action to improve in future episodes. Axel and his colleagues are so capable at hand-to-hand combat that theres no tension or peril in these scenes despite the unerringly good soundtracks best efforts to establish those feelings. As such, Im thankful for the one thrilling sequence that bucks this trend, involving a helicopter and a Green Goblin-esque glider.Theres still room for Lazarus action to improve in future episodes.A bigger problem is just how functional the characters are. Theyre a group of hyper-competent spies who are too aloof to seem like they care about their assignment which is, as a reminder, to prevent the deaths of billions of people. Lazarus frustratingly shies away from emotion in the middle of this doomsday scenario in favor of a cool factor that never actually feels that cool. Axel is meant to be the character we see this new world through, but he seems to find everything so easy, like he knows hes going to survive no matter the challenge. I want to feel the effect of each hour passing, bringing us closer to doom. I want to understand the exhaustion and panic that must come with being tasked to save the world. Instead, Axel treats everything like a game which could make for an interesting character arc past these five episodes, if Lazarus hadnt sacrificed my investment in him as a person from the get-go. (A similar constraint affects the side characters as well.) Watanabe has something to say through Lazarus, but its watered down and held back in these five episodes. The message about the way modern society sees and deals with pain is limited to monologues at the start of each episode, in which various characters detail their first encounters with Hapna. In a short span of time, a lot is said about how people desire numbness, and how readily available and monetized it is. But these first passages of Lazarus only touch on these topics briefly, leaving the big questions posed in the premiere about Skinners motivations and how the world at large might react to its impending doom to be answered (or not) by the episodes to follow.

From Superman to Wicked and The Running Man: The Coolest Things We Saw at CinemaCon
CinemaCon, the largest and most important gathering for the worldwide movie theater and exhibition industry, just concluded its nearly week-long festivities in Las Vegas. In that Nevada oasis there were exclusive Hollywood presentations which debuted a slate of upcoming films, premieres and surprise feature screenings, stars, producers, and directorsall there to celebrate the moviegoing experience. CinemaCon offered on-stage reveals, sizzle reels, and extended footage exclusively shown to CinemaCon goers.Among the highlights, attendees got first looks and extended footage reveals of James Gunns Superman, a behind-the-scenes look at Masters of the Universe, an eerie M3GAN 2.0 performance, hilarious Thunderbolts* footage, and more!SUPERMAN DC Studios (Warner Bros. Presentation)DC Studios Chiefs James Gunn and Peter Safran hit the CinemaCon stage on Tuesday to introduce new unseen footage from the upcoming Superman. The presentation started with behind the scenes footage and a sizzle reel of the first day of shooting Superman in Norway. The presentation also surprised us with some of the star-studded cast, including David Corenswet (Superman), Rachel Brosnahan (Lois Lane) and Nicholas Hoult (Lex Luthor).David, dressed as Superman, is flying into the sunset and I felt like I was witnessing the magic of cinema in first-person, in real time, Hoult said about the effect of watching Corenswet don the red cape in-person.CinemaCon was also the launching pad of nearly five minutes of footage. Much of it has been released online, such as the full scene of super-powered dog Krypto rescuing (and jumping on) a badly damaged Superman in the Arctic. The canine then takes Kal-El home to the Fortress of Solitude where robots are waiting for him. However, what we saw at CinemaCon is a bit more extended than even the recent sneak peak. Indeed, we got a better idea about why the reason the Fortress of Solitude is in shambles: Krypto wrecked the place! And after being healed by the suns yellow rays, Superman lightly scolds Krypto for making a mess inside the fortress. Stay, Superman says before flying off.Gunn told the audience that Krypto was largely inspired by his own rescue dog Ozu. The filmmaker also recounted a funny story about bringing him home: He was the worst dog you could ever imagine. He said Ozu chewed up everything he could and that included a new $8,000 laptop. Gunn would have to climb on furniture because Ozu would run around trying to bite his feet. I didnt know if he was playing or he hated my guts. The footage also showed Lois hard at work and giving Clark a hard time during an interview. Also while speaking at the presentation, Brosnahan revealed she went through an intense journalistic boot camp and spoke with reporters about what brought them into the profession. This may be the best Lois Lane yet.The extended look showed a lot of Gunns personality and heart. As described by Gunn, This movie celebrates kindness and human love. Hoult meanwhile added that hes so excited to watch this movie with my son.WICKED (Universal Presentation)Wicked, one of the biggest Broadway adaptations of all time, had its third year of closing out the Universal Pictures presentation. CinemaCon attendees were the first audience in the world to see a glimpse of the second half of the story that captivated theatergoers last year. WERE ABOUT TO BE CHANGED FOR GOOD! Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo took the stage with director Jon M. Chu and producer Marc Platt as they introduced an exclusive clip loaded with magical moments. It starts with bubbly Glinda (Grande) who can sense the presence of Erivos Elphaba, telling her to come inside before the monkeys see her. Theres a voiceover of Elphaba saying theres no way back, and Prince Fiyero (Jonathan Bailey) is leading a charge to find the Wicked Witch as angry villagers march with torches. Musical fans will recognize the music which cuts from No Good Deed to For Good. We even see Glinda and Fiyero having a wedding, and then it cuts to Dorothy and friends meeting the Wizard. Fiyero also is shown eventually declaring his love for Elphaba, the Wicked. The last sizzling clip shows Glinda hug her only friend that mattered.M3GAN 2.0 Blumhouse (Universal Presentation)Blumhouse presented exclusive looks at sequels of some of its biggest hits. As expressed by CEO Jason Blum, October is an extra special month for horror. CinemaCon audiences also caught first looks of the stacked cast, including Nicholas Galitzines He-Man and Camila Mendes Teela (who were also in attendance), as well as Idris Elbas Man-At-Arms and Alison Bries Evil-Lyn.Director, Travis Knight (Bumblebee) showed off a BTS sizzle reel of the cast, the creative team, massive London sets, intricate backdrops and worldbuilding, costumes, swords, weapons, the fictional planet Eternia, and He-Mans iconic Sword of Power and the glorious He-Man himself with his hair blowing in the wind. Knight discussed his love of the toys and beloved 80s animated series, admitting he had a He-Man haircut as a kid. The footage also showed Galitzines workouts, sword-wielding and bench-pressing. By the power of Grayskull! The Running Man (Paramount)CinemaCon Star of the year Glen Powell took the stage with co-stars Josh Brolin, Colman Domingo, plus visionary director Edgar Wright, to present the footage in Las Vegas. CinemaCon was the first audience in the world to get a sneak peek at The Running Man. The dystopian film, which finished shooting less than a week ago, gives off a bleaker, darker Hunger Games meets a popular game show competition.Domingo, who plays the intense and eccentric host of a homicidal game show, introduced the first-look to attendees. This dystopian remake of the 1980s Arnold Schwarzenegger film follows a desperate man named Ben Richards (Powell) who needs money for his sick daughter. To solve his familys money problem, he joins a popular show titled The Running Man in which teams of killers hunt down the contestants where the longer a contestant survives, the more money that person will make. Wright, who is also a fan of the Stephen King book, was inspired by the literary source materials more serious tone and themes. He said he wanted to make this film more dystopian. From the footage we saw, the opponents are more special opps, ex-military serious. This might be a far cry from the eccentric, wonky personalities from the original film.Mission: Impossible The Final Reckoning (Paramount) StuntsParamount saved its biggest blockbuster for last, promising a stunt-filled spectacle and featuring some of Tom Cruises most daring tricks. Christopher McQuarrie was honored with Director of the Year. Meanwhile Chris Aaronson, president of theatrical distribution at Paramount Pictures, introduced the exciting stunt spectacle. The stage was set with ramps, glaring red lights, and lots of smoke. A group of a few professional motor-dirt bikes hyped the crowd with the intense light show and exciting stunts like flipping on the bike!Mission: Impossible The Final Reckoning (Paramount) Val Kilmer Moment of SilenceAction legend Tom Cruise took the stage and started the Mission: Impossible presentation by paying tribute to his late Top Gun co-star, Val Kilmer, who died of pneumonia earlier this week.I cant tell you how much I admire his work, Cruise said. The audience took a moment of silence to honor what he contributed to the film industry. Cruise told the audience he was honored to work with Kilmer once again on the 2022 film, Top Gun: Maverick. He closed with I wish you well on your next journey.Thunderbolts* Marvel Studios (Disney Presentation)Marvel Studios showed a hilarious and action-packed look at Thunderbolts* full of witty one-liners, especially from Julia Louis-Dreyfus Valentina Allegra de Fontaine. The extended scenes opened with Harbours Red Guardian telling Stans Bucky Barnes, We are same, we are different before revealing the rest of the unconventional team of antiheroesYelena Belova, Ghost, Taskmaster, and John Walker in the back of the van.The next scene shows Valentina poking fun at Congressman Barnes and his promising career of less than half a term. 67 Modern Bathroom Styles That Will Elevate Your Home Instantly
When you fantasize about your dream bathroom, what comes to mind? Perhaps swapping your view of the medicine cabinet for a panorama of Los Angeles? Trading a wait for the sink for your own private en suite? Or stretching out in a deep tub ensconced in swirling marble walls? Extraordinary features like these can transform an ordinary, utilitarian bathroom into an ultraspecial space you never want to leave. While we're all about vintage everything, We're here to make the case for bringing your bathroom into the 21st century. Modern bathroom styles emphasize sleek, minimalist designs with clean lines, neutral color palettes, and high-quality materials. Floating vanities, frameless glass showers, and freestanding bathtubs create an open and airy feel, while matte black or brushed gold fixtures add a touch of elegance. Smart technology, such as touchless faucets and LED mirrors, enhances functionality, and natural elements like wood, stone, or greenery bring warmth to the space. If you're feeling like these luxuries fall well beyond your budget, we have great news for you. Sometimes all it takes are a few additions to get the look. Just ask London-based designer Kelly Hoppen, whose luxury bathroom projects would make Kendall Roy jealous. Modern design is practical and can seamlessly incorporate a classic bath with modern taps and joinery to create a more eclectic look, or even the shape of a tile can add a modern twist, Hoppen says, adding that sometimes all it takes is a focus on clean lines. Lighting plays a crucial role and should be as hidden as possible, she explains. Avoid overusing patterns or shades, as this can disrupt the sleek, modern look. The goal is to maintain simplicity and elegance throughout the design.Ready to talk specifics? Whether youre taking on an ambitious remodel of your entire home or simply retiling your bathroom, the pages of ELLE DECOR are a great place to start. Below, weve gathered 65 luxurious modern bathroom styles from our favorite designers. Go aheadsoak it all in.1Desertcore-Inspired BathroomDavid MitchellThese days, modern doesn't always have to mean cold lines and sterile decor. Case in point: the primary bathroom of this Soho loft, which was inspired by an Aman resort. It features a custom white oak vanity with a moon grey limestone top. The sinks were carved from a 1600-pound block of stone that was fabricated in Italy and brought into the space through the window.2Luxuriously Streamlined BathroomCourtesy Todd EberleReady for your sophisticated era? In Giorgi Armani's historic Upper West Side apartment, a Zebru marble vanity in a guest bath is the very definition of restrained opulence. If it's good enough for Giorgi, it's good enough for us. So they tapped the design firm Electric Bowery to recreate its bathing culture in their bathroom. Here, an ofuro-style cedar tub takes centerstage atop a platform clad in softly gleaming black limestone tile.4Dark and Moody BathroomNoe DeWittThe primary bathroom of this Gatsby-era mansion is as dapper as its homeowner, ELLE DECOR A-List designer Alfredo Paredes. But dont assume you need Copacabana honed marble-lined walls to have this look. An open-shelved wood cabinet functions as a vanity, overseen by Urban Archaeology sconces and towering twin mirrors. An evening at this Kelly Behundesigned retreat means soaking in a custom metallic tub beside a plush vintage Claude Bleynie tapestry. Our favorite detail? The idiosyncratic Janny Baek glass flower vase that brings a touch of sculptural oddity to the otherwise opulent space. 6Bathroom BuddyFrancesco DolfoGrace Jones makes for a worthy companion amid your bathroom break at Eric Egans 1890s Milan flat. The bold blue and yellow portrait works well against the rooms statement-worthy Fromental wallpaper. We especially admire Egans confident combination of wallpaper motifs and the Moroccan floor tiles, a pairing that creates a delightful tension. In his French apartment, homeowner and Rinck president Valentin Goux covered the spacious primary bathroom in bold Yves Klein blue tiles, a satisfying juxtaposition amid the apartments warmer hues. The colors become cooler in the private areas of the apartment, Goux says. Its a bit more calm, though still colorful, and reminds us of the bathrooms we had as kids.8Moody Marble BathroomAdrian GautMarble has been used in home interiors for millenniaand if its good enough for Romes best architects, its good enough for Kelly Wearstler, who clad the walls of this Toronto bathroom in elegant Calacatta viola marble. These deeply veined walls, reaching well beyond the standard ceiling height, are punctuated by a Lazzarini & Pickering pouf. 9Floor-to-Ceiling Checked Bathroom Adrian GautIn a bathroom of a Toronto home designed by Kelly Wearstler, the floors, walls, and ceiling are all clad in oblong tiles in alternating shades of bluea stylish (and Wearstlerian) twist on a washroom classic. The bathroom also has a custom counter and mirror by Urban Archaeology and a faucet by Waterworks. The stool is from Carl Moore Antiques, the sconces are by Ralph Lauren Home, and the pendant is by the Urban Electric Co. This is Apples unreleased 10th anniversary Apple Watch band [Gallery]
Over the years, weve seen a handful of unreleased Apple Watch bands emerge outside Apple, but this one might be my favorite. The Apple Watch will celebrate its 10th anniversary later this month, and it turns out Apple made a special edition anniversary Apple Watch Sport Band to celebrate. Here are a bunch of images showing it offbut youll probably never be able to buy it. 9to5Mac reader Mike, who also runs a Discord server dedicated to Apple Watch band collecting, shared a gallery of images with me showing off this unreleased anniversary band. The anniversary Apple Watch Sport Band features a speckled design similar to the Pride Edition Sport Band released in 2023 and recent Nike bands. However, the speckles on this one are meant to represent the seasonal colors of Apple Watch bands released by Apple over the years. The back of the band is engraved with a special message: 2014-2024: Ten Years of Apple Watch, with a 10 encircled in the center. It features a jet black pin.Its unclear how many of these Apple Watch bands were manufactured. So far, only four of them have materialized in the real world. Two of them were sold on eBay last October and were still in the special packaging that Apple uses to send accessory samples to its Color Evaluation Team in Cupertino. Its likely that Apple ran a small manufacturing test run, but ultimately decided not to go forward with mass production and a release to the public. While Apple has gifted employees with limited-edition Apple Watch bands in the past, it doesnt seem the anniversary band ever made it out of the evaluation stage. Its highly unlikely this Apple Watch band will ever see a public release. The Apple Watch is celebrating its 10th anniversary later this month, having originally been released on April 24, 2015. It was announced during Apples special event on September 9, 2014, hence the 2014-2024 lettering on this band. There has also been evidence that Apple is planning a special Activity Challenge to celebrate the Apple Watchs anniversary. Check out more pictures below. What do you think of the design? Should Apple release this band to the public? And if youre an Apple employee who knows more about the story behind this Apple Watch band, find my contact information here.Add 9to5Mac to your Google News feed. RFK Jr. Realizes He's Made a Huge Mistake
Image by Jabin Botsford/The Washington Post via Getty ImagesDevelopmentsLast week, Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) secretary and noted anti-vaccine crackpot Robert Kennedy Jr. announced sweeping layoffs as part of a major restructuring effort.Roughly 20,000 of the department's 82,000 full-time employees ended up on the chopping block. Around 10,000 have been laid off, with the rest being taking either early retirements or buyouts, according to the announcement. But it's looking like Kennedy moved too hastily, firing important workers who even he admits were actually needed."Personnel that should not have been cut were cut," he told reporters this week, as quoted by CBS News. "We're reinstating them."Bafflingly, he defended the unprofessional screwup."And that was always the plan," Kennedy added. "Part of the DOGE, we talked about this from the beginning, is we're going to do 80 percent cuts, but 20 percent of those are going to have to be reinstated, because we'll make mistakes."It's a confounding admission, highlighting the second Trump administration's "move fast and break things" approach, and how little thought is being put into sweeping cuts affecting the HHS and a vast number of other government agencies.DOGE has already had to reinstate key government employees on several occasions, including staff who were working to contain bird fluand USAID efforts to prevent Ebola outbreaks.Kennedy, a noted figure in the anti-vaccine movement, has proven a highly controversial pick for the job, and is already pouring resources into investigating long-debunked claims linking vaccines and autism. It's a precarious situation, especially given the ongoing measles outbreak. As the New York Times reported late last month, ill-informed measles patients were experiencing complications after following Kennedy's advice to take large amounts of Vitamin A.As part of the HHS restructuring efforts, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's complete Lead Poisoning Prevention and Surveillance Branch was laid off, according to CBS which, Kennedy argued, was a mistake.Despite backtracking on DOGE's ill-devised plans, it remains unclear how or when the HHS will reinstate these key figures. CDC officials told CBS that they hadn't been informed of any upcoming plans to do so.And the effects of the mass layoffs are already being felt. The CDC, for instance, won't be able to continue its investigation into lead in water "due to the loss of subject matter experts," officials said, as quoted by CBS.Despite admitting that 20 percent of the cuts were a mistake, Kennedy has said that restructuring the HHS could save taxpayers $1.8 billion a year "without impacting critical services."Now that the CDC and the Food and Drug Administration have been hit hard, we'll all find out whether that'll turn out to be true.Share This Article
