Magellan Ltd, a deep-sea mapping company, and Atlantic Productions conducted the scans over a six-week expedition. That project is the subject of the new National Geographic documentary Titanic: The Digital Resurrection, detailing several fascinating initial findings from experts' ongoing analysis of that full-size scan. Titanic met its doom just four days into the Atlantic crossing, roughly 375 miles (600 kilometers) south of Newfoundland. At 11:40 pm ship's time on April 14, 1912, Titanic hit that infamous iceberg and began taking on water, flooding five of its 16 watertight compartments, thereby sealing its fate. More than 1,500 passengers and crew perished; only around 710 of those on board survived. Titanic remained undiscovered at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean until an expedition led by Jean-Louis Michel and Robert Ballard reached the wreck on September 1, 1985. The ship split apart as it sank, with the bow and stern sections lying roughly one-third of a mile apart. The bow proved to be surprisingly intact, while the stern showed severe structural damage, likely flattened from the impact as it hit the ocean floor. There is a debris field spanning a 5×3-mile area, filled with furniture fragments, dinnerware, shoes and boots, and other personal items. The joint mission by Magellan and Atlantic Productions deployed two submersibles nicknamed Romeo and Juliet to map every millimeter of the wreck, including the debris field spanning some three miles. The result was a whopping 16 terabytes of data, along with over 715,000 still images and 4K video footage. That raw data was then processed to create the 3D digital twin. The resolution is so good, one can make out part of the serial number on one of the propellers. "I've seen the wreck in person from a submersible, and I've also studied the products of multiple expeditions—everything from the original black-and-white imagery from the 1985 expedition to the most modern, high-def 3D imagery," deep ocean explorer Parks Stephenson told Ars. "This still managed to blow me away with its immense scale and detail." The Juliet ROV scans the bow railing of the Titanic wreck site. National Geographic/Gary Moyes The NatGeo series focuses on some of the fresh insights gained from analyzing the digital scan, enabling Titanic researchers like Stephenson to test key details from eyewitness accounts. For instance, some passengers reported ice coming into their cabins after the collision. The scan shows there is a broken porthole that could account for those reports. One of the clearest portions of the scan is Titanic's enormous boiler rooms right at the rear bow section where the ship snapped in half. Eyewitness accounts reported that the ship's lights were still on right up until the sinking, thanks to the tireless efforts of Joseph Bell and his team of engineers, all of whom perished. The boilers show up as concave on the digital replica of Titanic, and one of the valves is in an open position, supporting those accounts. The documentary spends a significant chunk of time on a new simulation of the actual sinking, taking into account the ship's original blueprints, as well as information on speed, direction, and position. Researchers at University College London were also able to extrapolate how the flooding progressed. Furthermore, a substantial portion of the bow hit the ocean floor with so much force that much of it remains buried under mud. Romeo's scans of the debris field scattered across the ocean floor enabled researchers to reconstruct the damage to the buried portion. Titanic was famously designed to stay afloat if up to four of its watertight compartments flooded. But the ship struck the iceberg from the side, causing a series of punctures along the hull across 18 feet, affecting six of the compartments. Some of those holes were quite small, about the size of a piece of paper, but water could nonetheless seep in and eventually flood the compartments. So the analysis confirmed the testimony of naval architect Edward Wilding—who helped design Titanic—as to how a ship touted as unsinkable could have met such a fate. And as Wilding hypothesized, the simulations showed that had Titanic hit the iceberg head-on, she would have stayed afloat. These are the kinds of insights that can be gleaned from the 3D digital model, according to Atlantic Productions CEO Anthony Geffen, who produced the NatGeo series. "It's not really a replica. It is a digital twin, down to the last rivet," he told Ars. "That's the only way that you can start real research. The detail here is what we've never had. It's like a crime scene. If you can see what the evidence is, in the context of where it is, you can actually piece together what happened. You can extrapolate what you can't see as well. Maybe we can't physically go through the sand or the silt, but we can simulate anything because we've actually got the real thing." Ars caught up with Stephenson and Geffen to learn more. National Geographic Ars Technica: What is so unique and memorable about experiencing the full-size 3D scan of Titanic, especially for those lucky enough to have seen the actual wreckage first-hand via submersible? Parks Stephenson: When you're in the submersible, you are restricted to a 7-inch view port and as far as your light can travel, which is less than 100 meters or so. If you have a camera attached to the exterior of the submersible, you can only get what comes into the frame of the camera. In order to get the context, you have to stitch it all together somehow, and, even then, you still have human bias that tends to make the wreck look more like the original Titanic of 1912 than it actually does today. So in addition to seeing it full-scale and well-lit wherever you looked, able to wander around the wreck site, you're also seeing it for the first time as a purely data-driven product that has no human bias. As an analyst, this is an analytical dream come true. Ars Technica: One of the most visually arresting images from James Cameron's blockbuster film Titanic was the ship's stern sticking straight up out of the water after breaking apart from the bow. That detail was drawn from eyewitness accounts, but a 2023 computer simulation called it into question. What might account for this discrepancy?  Parks Stephenson: One thing that's not included in most pictures of Titanic sinking is the port heel that she had as she's going under. Most of them show her sinking on an even keel. So when she broke with about a 10–12-degree port heel that we've reconstructed from eyewitness testimony, that stern would tend to then roll over on her side and go under that way. The eyewitness testimony talks about the stern sticking up as a finger pointing to the sky. If you even take a shallow angle and look at it from different directions—if you put it in a 3D environment and put lifeboats around it and see the perspective of each lifeboat—there is a perspective where it does look like she's sticking up like a finger in the sky. Titanic analyst Parks Stephenson, metallurgist Jennifer Hooper, and master mariner Captain Chris Hearn find evidence exonerating First Officer William Murdoch, long accused of abandoning his post. This points to a larger thing: the Titanic narrative as we know it today can be challenged. I would go as far as to say that most of what we know about Titanic now is wrong. With all of the human eyewitnesses having passed away, the wreck is our only remaining witness to the disaster. This photogrammetry scan is providing all kinds of new evidence that will help us reconstruct that timeline and get closer to the truth. Ars Technica: What more are you hoping to learn about Titanic's sinking going forward? And how might those lessons apply more broadly? Parks Stephenson: The data gathered in this 2022 expedition yielded more new information that could be put into this program. There's enough material already to have a second show. There are new indicators about the condition of the wreck and how long she's going to be with us and what happens to these wrecks in the deep ocean environment. I've already had a direct application of this. My dives to Titanic led me to another shipwreck, which led me to my current position as executive director of a museum ship in Louisiana, the USS Kidd. She's now in dry dock, and there's a lot that I'm understanding about some of the corrosion issues that we experienced with that ship based on corrosion experiments that have been conducted at the Titanic wreck sites—specifically how metal acts underwater over time if it's been stressed on the surface. It corrodes differently than just metal that's been submerged. There's all kinds of applications for this information. This is a new ecosystem that is taken root in Titanic. I would say between my dive in 2005 and 2019, I saw an explosion of life over that 14 year period. It's its own ecosystem now. It belongs more to the creatures down there than it does to us anymore. National Geographic As far as Titanic itself is concerned, this is key to establishing the wreck site, which is one of the world's largest archeological sites, as an archeological site that follows archeological rigor and standards. This underwater technology—that Titanic has accelerated because of its popularity—is the way of the future for deep-ocean exploration. And the deep ocean is where our future is. It's where green technology is going to continue to get its raw elements and minerals from. If we don't do it responsibly, we could screw up the ocean bottom in ways that would destroy our atmosphere faster than all the cars on Earth could do. So it's not just for the Titanic story, it's for the future of deep-ocean exploration. Anthony Geffen: This is the beginning of the work on the digital scan. It's a world first. Nothing's ever been done like this under the ocean before. This film looks at the first set of things [we've learned], and they're very substantial. But what's exciting about the digital twin is, we'll be able to take it to location-based experiences where the public will be able to engage with the digital twin themselves, walk on the ocean floor. Headset technology will allow the audience to do what Parks did. I think that's really important for citizen science. I also think the next generation is going to engage with the story differently. New tech and new platforms are going to be the way the next generation understands the Titanic. Any kid, anywhere on the planet, will be able to walk in and engage with the story. I think that's really powerful. Titanic: The Digital Resurrection premieres on April 11, 2025, on National Geographic. It will be available for streaming on Disney+ and Hulu on April 12, 2025. Gwyneth Paltrow says she should have treated her stepchildren as her own 'way faster' than she did

Gwyneth Paltrow is reflecting on the lessons she learned while trying to blend her family. "If I look back at my mistakes as a stepmother, I should have just treated them both like my kids way faster," Paltrow said. Navigating the stepparent dynamic was difficult and often felt "full of minefields," she said. Gwyneth Paltrow says she waited too long to fully embrace her stepchildren as her own.On the April 8 episode of her "Goop" podcast — which featured her husband, Brad Falchuk, as a guest — Paltrow spoke about the work that went into blending their families.Paltrow has two kids with her ex-husband Chris Martin, whom she divorced in 2016 after 13 years of marriage. In 2018, she married Falchuk, who has two kids from his previous marriage."We traversed through some really rough things," Paltrow told Falchuk. "One of the most profound lessons that I've learned from my relationship with your daughter — which is now so fantastic — is there was a testing going on. She was testing me at the time to see at what point I would reject her."To overcome that initial friction with her stepdaughter and avoid being seen as the "evil stepmother," Paltrow says she decided to embody a maternal essence."I was going to be that presence for her, always loving and forgiving in the face of, you know, if she acted up, and show her that ultimately I was so there for her that she would not question my intentions or think that I was there to take you away from her," Paltrow said to her husband. But it wasn't easy and she often had to remind herself to be the adult if they ran into conflict. At the same time, Paltrow was worried because she felt like she didn't have "jurisdiction" to tell her stepkids how they should behave."I thought that in my case, if I assert my boundaries or my expectations around manners, or anything like that, it will exacerbate the situation," Paltrow said.It was difficult navigating the stepparent dynamic, which often felt "full of minefields," she said."If I look back at my mistakes as a stepmother, I should have just treated them both like my kids way faster," Paltrow said. "Like I was too worried about everyone's feelings, in a way."During the Visionary Women's International Women's Day Summit in 2024, Paltrow said that being a stepmother was one of her "biggest learnings as a human being.""And my area of growth personally came from the initial difficult relationship I had with my stepkids, and now they're like my kids," she said, per Us Magazine.Parenting experts previously told Business Insider about the common mistakes that stepparents make when trying to connect with their stepkids. One mistake is trying to compete with the stepkids' biological parents."Instead, speak directly to the child about their parent and encourage the relationship between the child and parent. This will help make clear that this isn't an either/or situation," Sarah Epstein, a licensed marriage and family therapist who specializes in family dysfunction, told BI.Another mistake is trying to discipline stepchildren before building a relationship. Clinical psychologist Dr. Kasi G. Patterson told BI it would be better to let the biological parent handle it first.Only after a trusting relationship has been developed will the kids learn to view both parents — biological and stepparent — as authority figures and "can accept discipline from each of them," he said.A representative for Paltrow did not immediately respond to a request for comment sent by BI outside regular hours. Generative AI: Beyond ChatGPT & Midjourney
Generative AI: Beyond ChatGPT & MidjourneyOver the last couple of years, Generative AI has exploded into the mainstream, thanks in large part to names like ChatGPT and Midjourney. These tools have become household names—one crafts paragraphs, poems, and code with ease, while the other brings imagination to life through stunning digital artwork. But generative AI is so much more than these two giants.Today, we’re venturing beyond the usual suspects to explore how generative AI is quietly reshaping industries, empowering creators, and transforming the way we live and work.---What Is Generative AI? (In Simple Terms)Generative AI refers to systems that create content. This could be text, images, audio, video, code, 3D models, and more. Powered by machine learning—particularly deep learning—these models learn from vast amounts of data and generate new, original outputs that mimic human creativity.---The Many Faces of Generative AI1. Code GenerationTools like GitHub Copilot, Replit Ghostwriter, and Amazon CodeWhisperer are transforming software development. They can autocomplete code, suggest bug fixes, and even generate entire functions based on a short prompt. What this means: Developers can focus more on architecture and creativity, while repetitive tasks are automated.2. Video GenerationAI models like Runway ML, Pika, and Sora (by OpenAI) are pushing the boundaries of video creation. With a simple text prompt, you can generate short film clips, motion graphics, or realistic simulations—no camera needed. What this means: Content creators, educators, and marketers are getting Hollywood-level tools at their fingertips.3. Music & SoundFrom Suno AI generating full music tracks to ElevenLabs cloning voices and narrating audiobooks, the audio space is booming. You can produce music or dialogue with just a few words and some basic input. What this means: Indie musicians, podcasters, and game developers now have a personal production studio in the cloud.4. 3D ModelingAI models like Point-E, Kaedim, and Luma AI can generate 3D objects from text or images. Game developers and AR/VR designers are using this to speed up asset creation drastically. What this means: Rapid prototyping for games, product design, or immersive environments becomes lightning fast.5. Business Intelligence & DataTools like Narrative BI or GPT-4 with Advanced Data Analysis can analyze complex spreadsheets, generate reports, and provide insights—all in natural language. What this means: Business analysts and decision-makers can interact with data in a conversational, accessible way.---What Sets These Tools Apart from ChatGPT or Midjourney? While ChatGPT excels in natural language processing and Midjourney in image generation, the tools above specialize in particular media or tasks, often going deeper in functionality:Runway ML enables frame-by-frame video editing.Suno AI can generate lyrics, music, and vocals as a complete package.GitHub Copilot deeply integrates into developer IDEs like VS Code. They don’t just assist—they co-create.---The Future of Generative AIWe’re heading toward a multi-modal AI future, where one system can handle text, image, audio, and video together. Think of designing a video game world where you describe the story, characters, and visuals—and AI builds it all on the spot.AI won’t just respond to your commands. It will collaborate with you.---Things to Keep an Eye OnEthical Challenges: As AI becomes better at mimicking human creativity, the lines of authorship, originality, and consent get blurrier.Job Displacement vs Augmentation: Will AI replace artists and coders—or become their most powerful tool?Open Source vs Proprietary Models: The rise of open-source models (like Stable Diffusion, Mistral, and Mixtral) is democratizing access.---Final ThoughtsGenerative AI is no longer just a fun toy for techies or artists—it's a productivity engine, creative partner, and innovation accelerator. We’ve barely scratched the surface of its potential. If ChatGPT and Midjourney were your entry points, consider diving deeper. The future of content, creativity, and communication is being built today—and it's generative.---Thanks for reading! While they've mentioned before that SF6 characters take much longer to make than past entries, the longer wait is likely because of the Switch 2. Capcom's probably betting big on the system's launch.   Seiniyta Member Oct 25, 2017 571 The only reason she's 'late' is because Capcom wants to ride the wave with the Switch 2 release. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if Season 3's first character drops in July like how Rashid got released soon after the game's release. The Kenya stage looks absolutely gorgeous.  Neoxon Spotlighting Black Excellence - Diversity Analyst Member Oct 25, 2017 92,698 Houston, TX HardRojo said: So are we getting new stages or something? Nintendo Switch 2 Editions Hands-On Impressions – Mixed Makeovers
Menu Home News Hardware Gaming Mobile Finance Deals Reviews How To Wccftech Gaming Nintendo Switch 2 Editions Hands-On Impressions – Mixed Makeovers Nathan Birch • Apr 11, 2025 at 12:47am EDT The Nintendo Switch 2 will be home to plenty of original experiences, like Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza, but a core part of the system’s early lineup will be “Nintendo Switch 2 Edition” versions of Switch titles. These will include upcoming games that will launch simultaneously on Switch 1 and 2, such as Metroid Prime 4: Beyond and Pokemon Legends: Z-A, as well as a handful of upgrades to older Switch titles like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Kirby and the Forgotten Land, and Super Mario Party Jamboree. I recently went hands-on with a number of these new editions at a Nintendo Switch 2 preview event (you can check out my general impressions of the hardware here). I’ve already chimed in on the Switch 2 version of Metroid Prime 4, but here’s a roundup of my thoughts on the various Switch 2 Editions of older titles. Are these editions a worthy upgrade or underwhelming? Scroll on for my early impressions… The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom Both The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom were said to run at 4K and 60fps by Nintendo reps at the hands-on event, although I suspect some sort of uprezing was going on, as they didn’t look quite as crisp as some of the other Switch 2 Edition titles I played at the event. Some assets didn’t look as sharp as they could have and shadows had quite obvious jagged edges. Of course, that can naturally come from uprezing a game that, in the case of BotW, is over eight years old at this point. Make no mistake, the games did look much better than on the OG Switch, and the bump in performance was very welcome given both BotW and TotK struggled fairly significantly to maintain even a solid 30fps on the older hardware. Being able to run through Kakariko Village at a solid 60fps after all these years was certainly a cathartic experience. The new versions of Zelda BotW and TotK also support Zelda Notes, a service available through the Nintendo Switch App that provides additional maps, hints, the ability to share items between the two games, and more. As a generally app-adverse person, I don’t know if this will be something I bother with all that much, but I could see it being useful for some. Overall, the Switch 2 versions of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom are nice to have, and will undoubtedly become my preferred way to play the games, but neither felt quite as transformative as I was hoping. Kirby and the Forgotten Land + Star-Crossed World Kirby and the Forgotten Land Nintendo Switch 2 Edition updates one of the most criminally-underappreciated games on the Switch, and it actually delivers one of the most notable upgrades of the early bunch of Switch 2 Editions. To my eye, the visuals looked sharper than either Zelda game, perhaps indicating Kirby is closer to a native 4K than they are. While the original Forgotten Land was a mostly-solid 30fps, the 60fps boost is noticeable and welcome. In another departure from the Zelda updates, Kirby and the Forgotten Land is also getting new content in the form of the Star-Crossed World expansion. This largely seems to be a remix of the original Forgotten World, with blue crystal stars raining down and changing up stages. Rather than Waddle Dees, Kirby is now rescuing strange new creatures called “Starries,” while also grabbing new star-like collectibles. Smashing larger crystals will make new crystalline platforms and structures appear, altering stage layouts and making enemies more challenging. There are also some completely new features, including added Mouthful Mode transformations (I got to try out the bouncy new Spring ability). While Star-Crossed World isn't a completely original creation, it felt just as fun as the original Forgotten Land and it seems like it may be quite a substantial add-on, remixing many, if not all, of the original game's stages. Super Mario Party Jamboree + Jamboree TV The demos for Super Mario Party Jamboree Switch 2 Edition were less about the visual and technical upgrades, and more about gameplay additions that show off the Switch 2’s new control options and accessories. I had the chance to try out a number of new minigames built around mouse controls that had me doing things like guiding toads through an electrified maze and spray painting bob-ombs. Most of these games were pretty fun. The new Jamboree TV expansion mostly focuses on using the new Nintendo Switch 2 Camera to insert yourself into games, which felt more gimmicky and less appealing to me. Current Thoughts on Nintendo Switch 2 Edition Games The Nintendo Switch 2 Edition games demoed at the recent hands-on event weren’t just one thing, running the gamut from technically impressive but perhaps not essential (The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom) to a quirky controller and accessory showcase (Super Mario Party Jamboree) to what seems to be a fairly significant content expansion (Kirby and the Forgotten Land). We also have to take into account cost when we talk about these Switch 2 upgrades, which Nintendo is being slightly opaque about. They have revealed the Zelda updates will cost $10 apiece if you own the original Switch games, although you can get both for “free” if you’re a Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscriber. If you don’t own the original games, you can buy Switch 2 Editions that will cost as much as the original game plus the upgrade pack (so, $70 for BotW and $80 for TotK). Pricing for the Kirby and Mario Party upgrades that actually add new content hasn’t been revealed, but store listings hint they’ll cost more – up to $20 for the upgrade and $80 if you’re getting the original game + upgrade bundle. Of course, I need to play more, but these Nintendo Switch 2 Editions seem like a solid deal if you already own the original Switch titles, but may be a bit rich for the blood of folks that also need to buy the base game. All the Switch 2 Edition titles I played seemed worthwhile to some degree, and some, particularly Kirby and the Forgotten Land, were quite intriguing, but you’ll have to pick and choose which ones are worth it for you (or get that NSO+ subscription, assuming all the updates will be available through the service). Your mileage with these makeovers may vary. Nintendo Switch 2 Editions of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom launch alongside the system on June 5. Meanwhile, Super Mario Party Jamboree arrives on July 24 and Kirby and the Forgotten Land is coming August 28. Look for more Wccftech coverage of these upgrades closer to launch.
