WWW.GADGETS360.COMEarth’s Oceans Were Once Green, And Scientists Say They Could Shift Color AgainPhoto Credit: Pixabay/pexels Green-tinted ocean waters observed near Iwo Island, Japan, resemble ancient Earth's seas Highlights Ancient oceans were green due to their high iron content Cyanobacteria adapted to green light for photosynthesis Climate change is increasing phytoplankton, altering ocean color Advertisement Japanese scientists say that the evolution of photosynthesis caused Earth's oceans to be formerly green, as per a report. The study suggests that the oceans supported only single-celled organisms and featured environments with barren landscapes of grey, brown, and black rocks. Within a period of 1.5 billion years, the slow changes in ocean chemistry could help explain why blue-green algae developed both types of photosynthetic pigments. The color of the planet's oceans is linked to water chemistry and life influence. Before Blue: The Green Ocean EraAccording to the report, Earth's oceans were once green. The chemistry and evolution of photosynthesis account for this shift. Discovered throughout the Archean and Paleoproterozoic ages, banded iron formations—which were laid between 3.8 and 1.8 billion years ago—were formed when life was limited to one-celled creatures in the oceans; the continents were desolate gray, brown, and black rock and silt terrain.Green Seas Sparked LifeThe first life using sunlight emerged in the Archean eon, when Earth's atmosphere and seas lacked gaseous oxygen. These creatures started the "Great Oxidation Event," a significant ecological turning point permitting advanced life on Earth, using anaerobic photosynthesis. The "bands" of various colours in banded iron formations capture this change with an oscillation between iron deposits devoid of oxygen and red oxidized iron. The case for green oceans in the Archean eon starts with an observation: waters around the Japanese volcanic island of Iwo Jima have a greenish hue linked to a form of oxidized iron — Fe(III). Blue-green algae thrive in the green waters surrounding the island, and their ancestors evolved alongside other bacteria that use ferrous iron instead of water as the source of electrons for photosynthesis.Life Changes Ocean ColoursPhotosynthetic organisms use pigments (mostly chlorophyll) in their cells to transform carbon dioxide into sugars using the energy of the sun. Genetically engineered modern blue-green algae with phycoerythrobilin (PEB) grow better in green waters, suggesting that pale-green dot worlds viewed from space are excellent candidate planets to harbor early photosynthetic life. The color of our oceans is linked to water chemistry and the influence of life. Purple oceans could be possible on Earth if the levels of sulfur were high, red oceans could be possible under intense tropical climates, or a type of algae linked to "red tides" could dominate the surface oceans. As the sun ages, changes in the color of our oceans are inevitable, as nothing is permanent at geological timescales. GAMINGBOLT.COMThe Outer Worlds 2 Features Over 90 Perks, Including Choices for NPC-Killing PsychopathsNews The Outer Worlds 2 Features Over 90 Perks, Including Choices for NPC-Killing Psychopaths Design director Matt Singh confirms you can "kill anybody" and still complete the sci-fi RPG. "It's going to roll with it." Posted By Ravi Sinha | On 15th, Apr. 2025 While The Outer Worlds 2 is significantly changing its Skills, affecting overall build variety, Obsidian Entertainment isn’t stopping there. It’s also expanding on Perks with over 90 in total, some leaning into combat and others suited for “non-traditional” play-styles. As lead systems designer Kyle Koenig told IGN First, “We’ve significantly increased the number of Perks with over 90 of them – each requiring various Skills to unlock. As you invest in Skills, it changes how you can invest in Perks and leads you down many different paths.” For example, Run and Gun allows one to fire a shotgun, SMG and assault rifle while sprinting and sliding. Pretty potent, but it shines even more with the bullet-time-esque Tactical Time Dilation. Space Ranger, on the other hand, buffs damage based on Speech and opens up new dialogue options. “The way we looked at them when designing them was to look at all the different modes of gameplay the player has, and what are all the actions they can take and how can we modify them.” It’s also possible to build around different types of elemental damage. As Koenig notes, “Even if you want to mix and match them, you can be a character that’s all about plasma and burning things alive while getting healing from it – or using shock damage to scramble automechs and have them fight for you temporarily while paralyzing creatures and humans – or using corrosive damage to take away all their armor and make it so all your attacks against them are critical hits that deal insane amounts of damage.” If you’re someone who thrives off slaying NPCs, Psychopath and Serial Killer are the ticket, permanently increasing your max health. “Especially in an Obsidian game where we allow you to kill anybody – the game’s going to respond, it’s going to roll with it, and you’re going to still be able to complete the game. It’s actually a really fun way to play in a second or third playthrough to see how far you can take it,” said design director Matt Singh. Launching later this year, The Outer Worlds 2 sees players controlling an Earth Directorate agent who ventures to Arcadia to stop an outbreak of rifts. It’s coming to Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC (including Battle.net), with a Direct scheduled for June 8th. VARIETY.COMTrevor Noah’s Day Zero Productions Launches Climate-Themed Indie Video Game Competition (EXCLUSIVE)Trevor Noah‘s Day Zero Productions will launch a climate-themed video game competition on Earth Day in partnership with indie developer Anima Interactive and “Marcel the Shell with Shoes On” producer Cinereach. Dubbed “Day Zero Games: Solarpunk Jam,” the competition will run April 22 through May 10 and culminate with a $10,000 grand prize. Per the official description for the inaugural Day Zero Games competition, the event “challenges creators to make original video game prototypes that bring climate visibility to the forefront.” The contest “invites developers around the world to imagine hopeful and optimistic climate futures inspired by the solarpunk literary and art movement.” Related Stories All participants will receive a narrative toolkit created by Cinereach in partnership with Good Energy offering insights and climate research to inform projects. Popular on Variety Additional sponsors and partners for the competition include International Game Developers Association (IGDA), Black in Gaming Foundation, Latinx in Gaming and Games for Change. The launch of the competition comes on the heels of Noah’s Day Zero Productions’ (which takes it name from the water shortage crisis in Cape Town, South Africa that occurred between 2015-2018) recent investment in gaming startup Midsummer Studios. This marks a re-team for Anima Interactive and Cinereach, which last year host the competition Just Play, an initiative that encouraged creators to explore different lenses of justice through gaming, which ended with game showcases at SXSW in Austin and the Hollywood Climate Summit. “Indie games are fertile environments to push creative boundaries in our industry”, Day Zero head of games Dan Zubrzycki said. “Our team’s name, Day Zero, has its roots in the climate conversation. It’s an issue close to Trevor’s heart. With this Solarpunk game jam, we’re tapping into that spirit to reimagine the climate conversation — not with fear, but with creativity, resilience, and joy. The future needs more than warnings; it needs worldbuilders brave enough to imagine a better tomorrow.” “Game jams offer a safe space and playground to experiment and take risks that might not always be possible within more structured studio environments,” Anima Interactive founder and creative director Karla Reyes said. “We’re excited to partner with Day Zero on this solarpunk-themed jam. During a time when our Earth is fragile, it’s more important than ever for art and activism to converge and inspire a brighter future. It should be electrifying!” Cinereach chief creative officer Candice McFarlane added: “We’re thrilled to team up with Day Zero Productions on our third game jam with Anima Interactive. We can’t wait to see our narrative blueprints—shaped by representatives of impacted communities and climate professionals—transformed into playable worlds with the power to inspire alternative futures. What developers create here might just be the seeds from which a new reality can emerge.”0 Commentaires 0 Parts 119 Vue

WWW.POLYGON.COMPalia’s new zone, the Elderwood, is accompanied by a console launchThe world of Palia is about to get a whole lot bigger. Not only is the fantasy life simulator game adding a new zone, the heavily foreshadowed and extremely ominous Elderwood, but the game will also be available on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X on May 13. According to a press release from developer Singularity 6, Palia has accumulated more than 6 million players to date, and the Elderwood will be one of the most transformative updates yet.In Palia, the player is a human who has recently awoken from a long slumber. Humanity is returning to the world of Palia, which is currently occupied by purple-skinned elves, sophisticated golem AIs, and one capitalism-loving fat cat Grimalkin. Upon awakening, the player is adopted into Kilima Village and given their own homestead. Gameplay is divided into two major zones: either you’re heading out into Kilima and the nearby Bahari Bay to quest, explore, and find resources, or you’re at your homestead building up a farm and a cozy home. Singularity 6 have been regularly updating Palia since its launch to early access, and many of those small updates teased the upcoming Elderwood, which is a dense forest filled with magic and mighty beasts. The Elderwood is tougher to explore than the other zones, as players must unlock each fast travel post. There is no combat, but hunters will have some new targets like the Ogapuu and the Shmole. The Elderwood is also host to Relics, a new equipment type that provides a passive buff to your entire party. Perhaps most importantly, the Elderwood will have a new villager to befriend, along with new resources, new recipes, and a reliable source of the rare Palium ore.Palia is free-to-play, and has cross-save and cross-progression. While there are microtransactions, they only affect cosmetic items like pets and special outfits from the in-game shop; all gameplay can be accessed by simply playing the game. The Elderwood is our first step outside of the Palia Republic and into the greater world, and after exploring the existing zones and uncovering secrets, I’m excited to explore the Elderwood and continue Palia’s mysterious main quest.See More:0 Commentaires 0 Parts 96 Vue

WCCFTECH.COMDune: Awakening Has Been Delayed To June 5Funcom has announced that its upcoming MMO Dune: Awakening will no longer make its original May 20, 2025 release date and has been pushed back a couple of weeks to June 5, 2025 for players who paid for early access with the game's deluxe edition, and June 10, 2025 for everyone else. The news came with a post on the game's official X page, with a long message from the Funcom team about how the studio "concluded that with a bit more time to cook, we can act on a lot more of the feedback we know is important to our beta testers." Dune: Awakening has been playable to lucky beta testers, members of the press, and content creators, who will all share their thoughts on April 25, 2025. The feedback from these players led Funcom to delay the game. This news also comes ahead of a livestream that will air today, where the Funcom team will talk more in-depth about combat in Dune: Awakening. The delay might be disappointing to those who have not yet gotten access to the beta, and are chomping at the bit to start their own adventure on Arrakkis. Funcom does however note in its delay message that it will host a "large-scale beta weekend next month where even more of you will get the opportunity to play the game and share your feedback." Funcom says it will share more on that large-scale beta soon, which could potentially be an open-beta, giving everyone who wants it, a chance to check out Dune: Awakening. "Dune: Awakening is a beast of a game," writes Funcom. "This is a multiplayer survival on a massive scale, and we're making gameplay and technical strides not seen in the genre before. We want to make sure we stick the landing." Deal of the Day0 Commentaires 0 Parts 99 Vue
