Maul: Shadow Lord Is Star Wars‘ Next Animated Series
At Star Wars Celebration in Tokyo, Japan today during a panel celebrating 20 years of Lucasfilm Animation history, the studio confirmed its next big animated chapter will be none other than a Darth Maul series. Carrying on a legacy that began with the 3DCG Clone Wars series, before carrying on into the likes of Rebels, Resistance, Bad Batch, and animated anthologies like the Tales series, Maul: Shadow Lord will follow Maul (played by returning Clone Wars and Rebels star Sam Witwer), seemingly as he builds out the Crimson Dawn crime syndicate. The trailer shown to gathered fans in the hall included various Criminal factions like the Pykes reeling from attacks on shipments, only for Maul to reveal himself as the architect. While the show’s look is a broad evolution of the art style seen in Clone Wars and later the Tales anthologies, there is also a new stylistic flourish in Shadow Lord‘s aesthetic that leans on rough lines and ragged edges, best glimpsed in Maul’s crimson saber blades, which look almost fiery in appearance. One of the most interesting elements of the whole trailer was that Maul finds himself what appears to be a young new apprentice in the ways of the Force: a young Twi’lek girl he liberates from captivity and then begins teaching. Alongside her tutelage, we see shots of gang wars, intense chases through the hustle and bustle of a city planet (not unlike Coruscant, but would Maul really be playing in his old master’s back yard like that? We’ll have to wait and see), and even an encounter with the Inquisitorius in the form of Ahsoka‘s Marrok, who expresses his surprise that Maul has survived even as he draws sabers with him. Maul: Shadow Lord will release in 2026. Additional reporting by James Whitbrook. Want more io9 news? Text description provided by the architects. Tucked away in the vibrant community of north London's Crouch End, this four-storey, five-bedroom house exemplifies how thoughtful design can transform a property. Originally a mid-terrace Victorian house in poor condition, the building had suffered from a series of ill-conceived extensions that compromised its flow and severed its connection with the garden.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture! What was once a characterful home had become a collection of dark, isolated rooms lacking natural light and spatial cohesion. The clients, both professionals with young children, saw potential in the house, not just as a home for their growing family but as a flexible space that could evolve over time. They engaged Mulroy Architects to realise their vision: a home that embraced open, light-filled spaces, offered adaptability for multi-generational living without the need for major alterations down the road, and would evolve with them over time.Save this picture! The key challenge was the fragmented layout, the result of years of piecemeal extensions. Mulroy Architects responded with a bold intervention that comprised a central atrium by removing the dining room floor and opening up the space between the ground floor and the newly excavated basement. This innovative solution introduced a dramatic sense of verticality, improving light flow and connectivity across the home. The crisp, russet-coloured steel staircase is a sculptural focal point that draws the eye across multiple levels. Its rich red hue contrasts with the neutral tones of the walls, blending old and new in a way that is both unexpected and harmonious. More than just a means of circulation, the staircase is a defining feature of the home, embodying the project's namesake.Save this picture!Save this picture!Flooding the interior with natural light was a priority. The previous extensions had blocked the rear, creating dark, enclosed spaces. To counteract this, Mulroy installed south-facing skylights in the new rear extension, ensuring daylight reaches deep into the home, including the basement. The atrium acts as a conduit for light, making even the lower level feel bright and inviting. The basement, far from being a secondary space, has been designed as an integral part of the home. It houses an ensuite bedroom, gym, and cinema room, all benefiting from generous glazing and carefully positioned lightwells. The space is inherently flexible—thanks to its separate access and independent amenities, it could easily transform into a self-contained apartment for guests, older children, or ageing parents. This forward-thinking adaptability ensures the home remains functional for years to come.Save this picture!Materiality plays a crucial role in creating a warm, inviting atmosphere. Earthy tones, from russet reds to deep oranges, browns, and pinks, are balanced against cooler greys and whites. Exposed brick and smooth plaster add texture, while golden-hued parquet flooring unifies the different levels. The integration of greenery, both inside and in the landscaped garden, reinforces a seamless indoor-outdoor connection.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture!Beyond aesthetics, sustainability was central to the retrofit. The external walls were internally insulated, the roof coverings upgraded for better thermal performance, and underfloor heating replaced outdated radiators for more efficient warmth. A mechanical ventilation heat recovery (MVHR) system was introduced in the basement, ensuring fresh, filtered air circulation. Infrastructure for an air source heat pump was also incorporated, allowing for an easy transition away from gas heating in the future.Save this picture! These measures significantly improved the home's energy efficiency, raising its SAP rating from a Band F (21) to a Band C (75), reducing its carbon footprint and enhancing comfort. A project like this would cost approximately £4,000 to £4,500/sqm ex fees, landscape and VAT. Andrew Mulroy, Director at Mulroy Architects, remarked: "At its core, Russet House is a home that meets the needs of the present while planning for the future. Our design ensures it remains adaptable, comfortable, and sustainable for years to come. By solving the puzzle of this Victorian home's limitations, we've delivered a bespoke space that is not only functional but inspiring."Save this picture! Grok Gets New Memory Feature to Offer Personalised Replies Based on Past Chats
xAI has begun rolling out a new memory feature for its Grok artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot, the company announced on Thursday. Similar to features available on ChatGPT and Gemini, it allows Grok to retain specific user details in order to personalise future conversations. Memories will also enable the chatbot to deliver tailored advice and recommendations, making conversations more fluid. The feature is rolling out to all Grok users across web and mobile apps. xAI is also introducing new tools to show users what information is stored and how it is being used.Grok Can Now Remember Past ConversationsIn a post on X (formerly known as Twitter), the official handle of Grok announced the rollout of the new memory feature. With this, the AI chatbot can remember certain information from past conversations and reference them in future chats. Both the Grok free tier as well as those with a paid subscription will get access to this feature. It is available across the Grok website, as well as the Android and iOS apps. When a user submits a prompt that could benefit from context, Grok can now reference information from previous interactions to deliver a more personalised response. For instance, if a user asks the chatbot to create a workout plan, it will take into account their preferred types of exercise and incorporate them into the suggestions.Users will remain in control of the information that Grok saves or references. Whenever a response draws on past interactions, a new icon will appear at the bottom of the output, next to the share icon. This new icon, dubbed “Referenced Chats”, can be tapped to open a sidebar showing the specific memories used to generate the response. Users can also delete these memories from the sidebar. This feature is currently only available in the web interface. xAI said that it will soon be added to the Android app as well.Alternatively, users can also go to the Settings menu and enter the Data Controls page to either turn off the feature entirely, or to delete individual memories. This can also be done only on the website for now. Notably, while memory in Grok is rolling out globally, it will not be available in the European Union (EU) or the UK due to regional privacy regulations Elon Musk's AI company xAI entered the generative AI space relatively late, launching its chatbot Grok in November 2023 — nearly a year after OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, and Anthropic debuted their own models. Since then, however, the AI firm has steadily added new features to bring Grok in line with its competitors. In 2024 alone, the company has launched Android and iOS apps, introduced the Grok 3 model with DeepSearch and Voice Mode, and integrated the chatbot into X (formerly Twitter), allowing users to tag it in replies and receive responses. Perplexity AI May Replace Gemini on Samsung & Motorola Phones: A New Chapter in Mobile AI?
Perplexity AI May Replace Gemini on Samsung & Motorola Phones: A New Chapter in Mobile AI?Diabetickart·Follow4 min read·Just now--Artificial intelligence has emerged as the new battlefield in the rapidly changing smartphone industry. The competition to control the user experience with intelligent assistants is intensifying, ranging from voice assistants like Siri and Alexa to more sophisticated AI-driven tools like Google’s Gemini. The most recent twist? According to reports, Samsung and Motorola devices are considering making Perplexity AI, the cutting-edge AI-powered response engine, the default assistant. This might replace Google’s Gemini. In the IT sector, this discovery has generated both excitement and conjecture, as reported by OpenTools.ai, Deccan Chronicle, and India Today. If confirmed, this action may mark a dramatic change in the field of mobile AI, challenging not only Google’s established hegemony but also redefining consumer expectations for smartphones. Why Perplexity AI?A normal virtual assistant is not what Perplexity AI is. Perplexity focuses on conversational search, providing accurate, web-sourced responses in real-time, in contrast to Gemini or Google Assistant, which are made to manage a variety of activities including sending messages, managing smart devices, and creating reminders.Perplexity is unique because it combines summarization driven by AI with conventional search engine results. It is perfect for users who prefer research-based insights over one-sentence answers, since it does more than just answer queries; it explains them, frequently citing sources from several websites and offering explicit citations.Including an assistant like Perplexity might give Samsung and Motorola the chance to provide something truly unique. It’s no secret that a lot of people still primarily use Google for their searches, but a specialized assistant that improves finding and making decisions might change user behavior in ways Google hasn’t yet figured out.The Shift Away from Google?Although Google has long been ingrained in Android, current market trends indicate that manufacturers are keen to lessen their need on it. Brands like Samsung and Motorola seem more open to considering alternatives than ever before, whether it’s because of regulatory pressure, strategic diversification, or a desire to control a larger portion of the AI layer in their products.Gemini’s reach on Android devices that aren’t Pixel-enabled may be restricted if Perplexity takes over as the new default assistant. While Google wouldn’t be completely excluded, this would indicate a possible decline in direct user interaction, particularly if Perplexity develops into a more powerful and integrated AI partner. This would be more than a small setback for Google. AI assistants are all about data, not simply convenience. Every query posed and response provided aids in algorithm improvement and enhances search and ad user targeting. A portion of that priceless engagement would be given to Perplexity if this direct line on millions of Samsung and Motorola smartphones were lost. The Smartphone Assistant RevolutionThis is a part of a larger change in the AI assistant industry, not simply Samsung and Motorola taking a risk. The traditional “Hey Google, set a timer” feature is no longer sufficient for users, who are becoming more intelligent. They are looking for assistants who can:• Gather trustworthy information;• Respond to queries that are contextually complex.• Acquire user preferences and effortlessly integrate with services and apps. The research-based model of Perplexity could be a wonderful fit for this emerging need. Its popularity among online users indicates that consumers are choosing more and more verified and informative responses over the occasionally overconfident and inaccurate responses provided by conventional chatbots. What’s in It for Samsung and Motorola? In a crowded Android market, both smartphone behemoths may find that using Perplexity AI helps set their products apart. Software and AI capabilities are emerging as significant selling features, despite the fact that hardware innovation is slowing down and competition is intense.Perplexity might be a unique feature for Motorola’s next models, since the company has been working to regain its place in the flagship market. Despite its size, Samsung faces pressure to maintain its lead over Apple’s more AI-focused ecosystem and Google’s Pixel phones. If this collaboration is fruitful, it may provide a fresh, more engaging user experience that is based on inquiry, education, and discovery rather than only voice commands and assistant tricks.Final ThoughtsThe fact that Samsung and Motorola are investigating Perplexity AI marks the beginning of a new age for mobile AI, regardless of whether this relationship ends up happening. It demonstrates the growing need for helpers who can become true knowledge partners rather than just voice instructions and passive job completion. The upcoming months will reveal if Perplexity can actually transform the mobile AI industry or if Google will strengthen its hold with upcoming Gemini improvements, as India Today rightly points out. In any case, consumers stand to gain from a more inventive and competitive AI assistant market. What do you think — would you prefer Perplexity AI over Gemini on your next phone? The battles for AI assistants are just beginning, and this could be the surprise that no one anticipated.
