Instagram launches its CapCut clone, Edits
Instagram has launched Edits, a video editing app that’s intended to rival the TikTok-linked equivalent CapCut. First announced in January, Edits is available for free from today on iOS and Android. Edits is described as a “video creation app designed for creators,” and includes tools for project management, tracking notes and ideas, and data on video performance. There are also advanced editing tools not found in the regular Instagram app, like AI animations created from static images, green screen replacement, and subject cutouts. The editing features are remarkably similar to those in CapCut, a standalone video editing tool from TikTok owner ByteDance. Edits was first announced while TikTok and CapCut were both briefly unavailable on US app stores, adding to the sense that Instagram owner Meta sees CapCut as a direct competitor. When Edits was first teased, Instagram head Adam Mosseri acknowledged the similarities between the two apps but claimed on Threads that Edits will be “more for creators than casual video makers.” In another reply he told The Verge’s Chris Welch that it will “end up pretty different than CapCut,” with “a much broader range of creative tools and probably a smaller addressable audience.” Instagram is already teasing future features coming to Edits, which include keyframes, more AI editing features, and the ability to collaborate on videos with other users.

Parable of the Talents: The Sci-Fi Classic Gets a Graphic Novel Adaptation
Octavia Butler is undoubtedly one of the greatest science fiction authors of all time, and it should come as no surprise that her work continues to be adapted in other media. Abrams ComicArts is following up its graphic novel adaptations of Parable of the Sower and Kindred with Parable of the Talents. With Parable of the Talents in stores now, IGN can exclusively debut a new preview of this graphic novel. Check it out in the slideshow gallery below:Parable of the Talents Graphic Novel Preview GalleryParable of the Talents is adapted by writer Damian Duffy and artists John Jennings and David Brame, the same creative team behind the previous Kindred and Parable of the Sower adaptations. Here's Abrams' official description of the book:Octavia E. Butler’s 1993 dystopian novel Parable of the Sower painted an alarmingly poignant picture of the year 2024, introducing readers to a world shaped by environmental disasters, economic instability, and social unrest. Following Lauren Olamina, a preacher’s daughter who develops a new religion, Earthseed, while travelling the dangerous and dystopian country, Duffy and Jennings bring the sci-fi classic to life with a beautifully drawn graphic novel adaptation. Now they are taking on the sequel to Butler’s stunning novel, The Parable of the Talents, which follows Lauren’s daughter, Asha Vere. The Parable of the Talents continues Butler’s masterful story set against a background of a war-torn continent under the control of a Christian fundamentalist fascist state. Asha searches for answers about her own past while struggling to reconcile with her mother’s legacy—who was caught between her duty to her chosen family and her calling to lead humankind into a better future among the stars. "Octavia E. Butler wrote Parable of the Talents as a warning for the future,” said Duffy in a statement. “Adapting Parable of the Talents from within the future she warned of has been a surreal and humbling journey. Fortunately, David Brame and John Jennings brought their significant artistic talents to bear, drawing images to help us move past dystopia, and down the path to hard won hope.”PlayParable of the Talents is available in bookstores and comic shops now. Save $800 Off the Top of the Line Alienware Area-51 GeForce RTX 5090 Prebuilt Gaming PC
Earlier this year, Dell rebooted the legendary Alienware Area-51 lineup of prebuilt gaming PCs, but until recently you could only configure it with one graphics card option - the RTX 5080. That's no longer the case. You can now choose to equip your Alienware Area-51 with an Intel Core Ultra 9 285K CPU and - finally - an Nvidia GeForce RTX 5090 GPU. Better yet, one of the preconfigured systems is on sale right now.Alienware Area-51 RTX 5090 Prebuilt Gaming PCs Are AvailableNew ReleaseAlienware Area-51 Intel Core Ultra 9 285K RTX 5090 Gaming PC (64GB/4TB)This Alienware Area-51 gaming PC configuration drops to $5,299.99 after a $800 off instant discount. It's $200 cheaper than the base RTX 5090 configuration yet has double the RAM (64GB) and double the storage (4TB). The Core Ultra 9 285K is Intel's latest flagship CPU and offers stellar workstation and gaming performance. It's not quite the performance uplift we wanted from the i9-14900K, but it's still the best all-around CPU that Intel has on offer. The processor is cooled by a massive 360mm all-in-one liquid cooler, and the system is powered by a 1,500W Platinum power supply.New for 2025: The Alienware Area-51 ChassisDell unveiled the new Alienware Area-51 gaming PC at CES 2025. The chassis looks similar to the 2024 R16 system with aesthetic and cooling redesigns and updated components. The I/O panel is positioned at the top of the case instead of the front, and the tempered glass window now spans the entire side panel instead of just a smaller cutout. As a result, the side panel vents are gone, and instead air intakes are located at the bottom as well as the front of the case. Alienware is now pushing a positive airflow design (more intake than exhaust airflow), which means a less dusty interior. The internal components have been refreshed with a new motherboard, faster RAM, and more powerful power supply to accommodate the new generation of CPUs and GPUs.The RTX 5090 Is the Most Powerful Graphics Card EverThe Nvidia GeForce RTX 5090 has emerged as the most powerful consumer GPU on the market. Although Nvidia has prioritized software updates, AI features, and DLSS 4 technology to improve gameplay performance, the 5090 still boasts an impressive 25%-30% uplift over the RTX 4090 in terms of pure hardware-based raster performance. The 5090 also has more (32GB vs 24GB) and faster (GDDR7 vs GDDR6) VRAM compared to the 4090. This GPU is extremely difficult to find at retail price and is currently selling for $3,500-$4000 on eBay.Nvidia GeForce RTX 5090 FE Review by Jackie Thomas"The Nvidia GeForce RTX 5090 has officially taken the performance crown from the RTX 4090, but with less force than previous generations. When it comes to traditional non-AI gaming performance, the RTX 5090 provides one of the smallest generational uplifts in recent memory. However, in games that support it, DLSS 4 really does deliver huge performance gains – you just have to make your peace with the fact that 75% of the frames are generated with AI."Check out more of the best Dell and Alienware gaming deals of 2025.Eric Song is the IGN commerce manager in charge of finding the best gaming and tech deals every day. Trump’s ‘war on science’ hands Europe major tech talent opportunity
As the Trump administration ramps up what academics call a  “war on science,” US researchers are increasingly looking to Europe for new opportunities — which could be good news for the continent’s tech sectors. France, in particular, is positioning itself as a safe haven for scientists. In a not-so-subtle appeal to disaffected US talent on Friday, the country’s president, Emmanuel Macron, called on researchers to “choose France, choose Europe” for their next job. In a post on X, he promoted a new platform that aims to make it easier for international scientists to conduct research in the country.  “Here in France, research is a priority, innovation a culture, science a limitless horizon,” he said. Yann LeCun, Meta’s chief AI scientist, called Macron’s announcement a “smart move.” LeCun has previously criticised Trump’s cuts to science funding at institutions such as Harvard, Columbia, and NASA. REGISTER “The US seems set on destroying its public research funding system,” he said in a LinkedIn post last month. “[Europe] may have an opportunity to attract some of the best scientists in the world.” European institutions are already seizing that opportunity. Last month, France’s Aix-Marseille University opened applications for its Safe Space for Science scheme, which specifically targets US researchers looking to relocate. Belgium’s Vrije Universiteit Brussel has opened a similar programme targeting American scientists “under threat.” Europe’s appeal to refugees from a war on science Three out of four US researchers recently surveyed by Nature said they were thinking about relocating to Europe or Canada, driven by growing concerns over President Trump’s stance on science.  An exodus of US researchers could have knock-on impacts on Europe’s tech ecosystem. Many of the continent’s most successful startups — from DeepMind to ClimeWorks — emerged from university labs.   Kanika Chandaria, a climate expert at Danish carbon credit startup Agreena, told TNW that the exodus of US researchers presents a “strategic opportunity for European countries,” especially in climate tech. With the US rolling back climate protections, European countries could move to “attract top talent and position themselves at the forefront of climate research and technology development,” she said. However, while Europe hopes to lure in disillusioned US scientists with promises of a high quality of life and research freedoms, there are potential drawbacks to relocating. LeCun highlighted several of them, including lower compensation than in the US and limited access to research funding. “To attract the best scientific and technological talents, make science and technology research professions attractive,” he wrote. “It’s pretty straightforward.” European tech talent will flock to Amsterdam on June 19-20 for TNW Conference. New video shows iPhone 17 Air thinness hands-on: ‘that feels futuristic’
Source: Unbox Therapy Knowing dimensions is one thing, but holding an iPhone 17 Air dummy model is quite another, as a new video from Unbox Therapy shows quite well. iPhone 17 Air dummy model impresses Unbox Therapy Unbox Therapy’s new video shows the full range of iPhone 17 dummy models. The easy standout of the bunch, by far, was the iPhone 17 Air. Lewis George Hilsenteger (“Lew”) reacts to the ultra-thin new model in ways that seem a surprise even to himself. Upon picking it up, he immediately says, “That feels futuristic” and worries about its potential for bending. He also measures the model on camera, showing it as 5.65mm at its thinnest point, down from 8.75mm for the iPhone 17 Pro Max model he also holds. His conclusion? “It feels like half. It’s not half, but it feels like half.” Overall, bending concerns aside, Lew confesses that he can’t imagine anyone wanting to buy any of Apple’s other iPhone models once they can get their hands on a 17 Air. Instagram’s new ‘Edits’ app now available on App Store following two month delay
After being announced in January, Instagram’s new CapCut competitor is now available on the App Store. The app is called ‘Edits’, and was announced in direct response to the TikTok ban earlier this year. The app was initially set to launch in February. Instagram Edits launch Meta is taking a page directly out of TikTok’s playbook, and is today launching a new video editing tool for short-form content creators. The new app, dubbed ‘Edits’, has all the tools needed to support your content creation process on mobile. It’s also available completely for free, whereas CapCut requires a subscription for certain features. Edits has a number of highly desirable features for content creation, including an intuitive UI that makes it easy to keep track of all of your drafts and videos in one place, easily export your videos to other platforms, and share directly to Instagram. If you’re an Instagram Reels creator, the app offers deep insights and analytics, allowing you to better plan what to make next. Video editing features As for the content creation side of things, Edits has a built-in camera for capturing high quality clips up to 10 minutes long. Those captured clips can then be edited as soon as you’re done shooting. Edits also allows for easy usage of trending and licensed audio. Here’s everything Edits offers for video editing, per Meta’s App Store description: Edit videos with single-frame precision. Get the look you want with camera settings for resolution, framerate and dynamic range, plus upgraded flash and zoom controls. Bring images to life with AI animation. Change up your background with green screen or add a video overlay. Choose from a variety of fonts, sound and voice effects, video filters, stickers and more. Enhance audio to make voices clearer and remove background noise. Generate captions automatically and customize how they appear in your video. Instagram Edits is available for download on the App Store today. It’s also available on Android starting today. Watching These Humanoid Robots Try to Run a Half Marathon Is Hilarious and Bizarre
A half marathon foot race in Beijing, China, saw thousands of humanoid robots of various sizes running right alongside their flesh-and-blood counterparts for an attempt to take the crown.Footage shows the awkward bipedal robots trotting off, closely followed by their respective teams of two to three human navigators and engineers. As the Associated Press reports, the machines were separated by a divider from the hordes of human runners, making sure they didn't get trampled — or tipped over. But judging by their performance, it's unlikely the robots will be rivaling their human counterparts any time particularly soon. Many of them visibly struggled to maintain a jogging pace, with their human helpers having zero issues keeping up. Others fell over or overheated. However, the robots' goofy appearance made for an eye-catching show, with human runners and spectators alike taking photos and videos of the stiff-limbed contraptions. Instead of getting snacks and drinks along the way, the robots made pit stops to swap their batteries.A biped dubbed the Sky Project Ultra robot, developed by China's National and Local Co-built Embodied AI Robotics Innovation Center, took the top non-human spot, crossing the finish line in just over two hours and 40 minutes. That's quite a bit slower than the average time it takes for a fit human runner to cover the 13.1-mile distance. As Wired points out, the slowest time for a human was 3 hours and ten minutes, which meant that Sky Project Ultra was the only bot to qualify for a human participation award.A picture shows the Sky Project Ultra bot receiving a gold medal — which itself is in the shape of a humanoid robot. At five feet, nine inches, the robot was also the tallest of the bunch.Kevin Frayer/Getty ImagesNot every robot contender was as lucky. Plenty of metal contestants ended up falling flat on their faces. Many of the robots also overheated, forcing engineers to swap them out along the way or give up altogether.PEDRO PARDO/AFP via Getty ImagesAs the AP reports, robots were given awards for best endurance, gait design, and innovative form, so there were other opportunities to score a win without mastering the art of the road race.Besides, as experts told Wired, most of these robots weren't primarily designed to run as fast as possible. Many of them had vastly different jobs outside of the race. It's nonetheless a sign of how far the tech has come."Until five years ago or so, we didn't really know how to get robots to walk reliably," Oregon State University robotics professor Alan Fern told Wired. "And now we do, and this will be a good demonstration of that."More on humanoid robots: Wild Video Shows Humanoid Robot Preparing Elaborate BreakfastShare This Article
