Amazon Just Happens to Hold Book Sale During Independent Bookstore Day
By AJ Dellinger Published April 26, 2025 | Comments (2) | A man waits outside a book store that displays anti-Amazon messages. © NICHOLAS KAMM/AFP via Getty Images April 26 is Independent Bookstore Day, an annual tradition organized by the American Booksellers Association that is entering its 12th year and has taken place on the final Saturday of April since its conception. And, wouldn’t you know it, Amazon just so happens to be hosting its second annual book sale (two being less than 12, if you’re keeping count) from April 23 through the 28th, encompassing the day that has been claimed by local shop across the country. If you are tempted to give Amazon a pass here for maybe accidentally encroaching upon their competitors’ space—and if you are, bless your sweet innocence—it’s perhaps worth noting that their first big book sale event in 2024 took place from May 16 through the 20th, notably a few weeks after Independent Bookstore Day. So, to whatever extent something you’ve done for exactly one year can be called a tradition, the company has already broken that in favor of squeezing indie booksellers. (In a statement to Variety, Amazon said, “The overlap was unintentional. The dates for our sale were set this year to accommodate additional participating countries.” Take that with as many grains of salt as you deem necessary.) You could just say that Amazon is going back to its roots. After all, the company got its start selling books at a loss to undercut the prices of brick-and-mortar competitors, until it pushed them to the brink of bankruptcy. Then, as if to dance on their graves, it started opening up its own physical bookstore locations (which it eventually shuttered without much fanfare because it never really cared about the product itself). Now that indie booksellers have found a way to carve out a niche, the company looks like it’d like to get back in the business of undermining them. The indies, understandably, aren’t thrilled. More than 1,600 bookstores, including participants in all 50 states, will celebrate Independent Bookstore Day with their local community, but they’ve also taken a deserved moment to side-eye Amazon a bit. Speaking to Variety, booksellers took shots at the retail giant’s decision to hold its book sale at the same time as their annual event. Andy Hunter, founder of Bookshop.org, called it “cynical, manipulative, and cruel.” Leah Koch, owner of the Ripped Bodice, in Los Angeles, California, kept it simple:  “Fuck Jeff Bezos,” she told Variety. “May he be very miserable living alone on the moon.”  Ripped Bodice does ship domestically and internationally, by the way, in case you’re looking for a new book. In a way, Amazon’s sale is more petty posturing than something that will actually impact the indies. Local book shops have managed to have a moment, thriving despite the increasing dominance of Amazon online by creating bonds with their local community and offering a shopping experience that Amazon can’t replicate. They’ve also adapted to the online ecosystem to stay competitive, while Amazon failed to plant roots with its own brick-and-mortar shops. Remember, you don’t have to wait for a special day to visit your local bookstore. Go any time, shop around, ask for recommendations. You might be shocked to find that you’ll get much more out of picking the brains of your local bookworms than you will from a recommendation algorithm. The site was literally a gap between a typical detached house and an apartment, with only the width of a parking space, located in the suburbs of the Tokyo metropolitan area. The goal was to bring distinction and clarity to the brand's voice ? one that needed to be elegant and confident, yet clear and approachable. We designed a custom sans-serif type family with two distinct layers: Display and Text. Both share the same underlying structure, but differ in how they balance expression and function.

CotW doesn't look bad but it neither has the hyper stylization of arcsys games nor the "realistic" graphics of Tekken/SF. In either department it doesn't compare entirely well so there's only so much paying wrestling companies and soccer players to advertise your game to a completely unplugged customer base will do.   Volken Member Sep 18, 2022 2,114 Should have used that advertising money to increase the production values of the game instead.   Dirtbag_drumdad Member Dec 19, 2024 66 Early impressions had me very interested in this game but then time passed and many things occurred and now I doubt I'll ever even play it. You could play it at anytime, regardless of whether you bought it before then or not. That said, 4600-ish isn't great at all, considering the level of marketing (which I don't think was done well at all). Ultimately, this is what happens when you leave a franchise that was never super popular, just lay dormant for 26 years—especially a fighting game. Trump Says TSMC’s Management Are “Trustworthy People” & “Have No Choice” But To Invest $100 Billion In US
President Donald Trump believes that executives of the Taiwan Semiconductor Company (TSMC) are trustworthy when it comes to following through on their investment commitments. Trump announced the largest foreign investment in US history last month when he and TSMC CEO Dr. C. C. Wei revealed a $100 billion chip manufacturing investment package through which TSMC would build more factories in the US. The package was part of Trump's bid to expand America's manufacturing base, and multiple reports from the Taiwanese press have indicated that TSMC has yet to submit its details to the Taiwanese government for approval. Trump Asserts TSMC Has No Choice But To Invest In The US Since It'll Have To Pay Tariffs Otherwise Trump's announcement at the White House in March was accompanied by praise for TSMC, which he called the greatest company on the planet. TSMC's advanced manufacturing technologies and its ability to ship large volumes of advanced chips have ensured that it is the preferred contract manufacturer choice for all of the world's leading technology companies. Even though TSMC announced the $100 billion package in March, multiple Taiwanese officials have since stated that they have yet to receive any official request for approval for the package. Any significant investments have to receive the Taiwanese government's clearance for national security, foreign policy and other implications. However, considering that TSMC has already built its Arizona fab, with the plant set to complete additional manufacturing lines in the future under a previous $65 billion investment, the firm has plenty of time to submit the details of its new investment package to the Taiwanese government. While TSMC has yet to submit details of its investment package to the government, Trump is confident that the firm will follow through on its word. In comments made in an interview with Time Magazine, he remained confident that his tariff strategy would ensure that American and foreign firms with manufacturing operations abroad would decide to shift their facilities to America. Trump cited NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang as an example of the success of his strategy. NVIDIA announced earlier this month that it would invest $500 billion in the US over the next four years to build artificial intelligence data center infrastructure. The President then proceeded to point out "Mr. Wei from Taiwan" as another example of his strategy's success. In response, when the interviewer asked him whether he was confident about the funds flowing into America, Trump replied: "I'll tell you why I trust them." He added: "First of all, I think they're trustworthy people. But more importantly, they have no choice, because they won't be able to pay the tariffs if they don't do it." While he had praised TSMC during the announcement, later on, Trump revealed that he had threatened TSMC with a 100% tax had the firm not decided to expand its US manufacturing base. "All I did is say, 'If you don't build your plant here, you are going to pay a big tax. Twenty-five, maybe 50, maybe 75, maybe 100%,'" Trump had said at a political event earlier this month.
