Could a Monster Earthquake Actually Sink Part of California?
April 30, 20254 min readCould a Monster Earthquake Actually Sink Parts of the Pacific Northwest?A new study is fueling speculation and fear about the risks of a major earthquake in the Cascadia subduction zone, including massive flooding in CaliforniaBy Stephanie Pappas edited by Jeanna BrynerStumps of Sitka spruce, drowned from subsidence during an earthquake at a subduction zone some 1,600 years ago, in Neskowin, Ore. Marli Miller/UCG/Universal Images Group via Getty ImagesScary headlines about the Pacific Northwest sinking into the sea are circulating online, with warnings that a major earthquake in the notorious Cascadia subduction zone could be worse than expected. What’s behind this new alarm? Fortunately, research has not uncovered a new risk that Seattle will become the Lost City of Atlantis. Instead scientists have examined the combined effects of two well-known phenomena: sea-level rise from climate change and the likely consequences of a major earthquake in the region. It was already known that sea level along the coast of northern California, Oregon and Washington State is estimated to rise by 1.3 to 2.9 feet by 2100 because of a warming climate. It was also well known that a magnitude 8 or higher earthquake in the area could cause the coastline to slump by up to 6.5 feet. What the new study, published on April 28 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences USA, adds is an understanding of how much additional land would end up being at a high risk of flooding because of these two combined threats. Why Does Sea-Level Rise Matter? On supporting science journalismIf you're enjoying this article, consider supporting our award-winning journalism by subscribing. By purchasing a subscription you are helping to ensure the future of impactful stories about the discoveries and ideas shaping our world today. While the East Coast is already seeing the effects of beach erosion and rising sea levels, the Pacific Northwest (PNW) has been protected by its geology—so far. The coast that extends from northern California to Vancouver Island in British Columbia sits on a subduction zone where the Juan de Fuca, Explorer and Gorda oceanic plates slip beneath the North American continental plate—parts of the ever moving slabs of rock that make up our planet. Right now the fault system is quiet, meaning it has not had a large earthquake for more than 300 years, and the coast is gradually rising by a few fractions of an inch each year. This geological uplift, a consequence of the interactions of the tectonic plates, outpaces sea-level rise in many areas, so the PNW has been relatively shielded from effects such as extreme flooding events or coastal erosion. But over the past 7,000 years or so, at least 11 major earthquakes have struck the Cascadia region where these faults reside. The last of these temblors occurred in 1700, and geologists can still see evidence of it causing the coastline to drop between 1.6 and 6.5 feet in the blink of an eye. “We have these really rooted organic soils that are suddenly overlain by this really clean tidal mud, indicating they were suddenly dropped down and were buried and basically converted to tidal flats,” says Tina Dura, a coastal geologist at Virginia Tech and first author of the new study. What no one had really studied, Dura says, was the combined effect of this sudden subsidence and the slower inundation caused by sea-level rise. How Much of Cascadia Will Become Prone to Floods?Dura and her colleagues looked at earthquake scenarios that would yield different ranges of subsidence, from 1.6 to 6.5 feet. They also compared such an earthquake’s effects at today’s sea levels with those at sea levels forecasted for 2100. By that time, sea-level rise is expected to outpace the geological uplift of the PNW and may reach as much as 2.9 feet. The team found that if an earthquake that caused more than six feet of subsidence were to happen today, the 100-year floodplain in estuaries in Cascadia would expand by 115 square miles. Were this quake to happen in the year 2100, with the additional pressures of sea-level rise, those estuaries would expand by 145 square miles. That would be triple the flood-prone area that is seen today. How Worried Should We Be?In the event of a magnitude 8 quake in Cascadia, subsidence would not be the first issue on anyone’s mind. A large undersea quake could cause a devastating tsunami that would immediately threaten lives and structures. The new study is focused on areas within about six feet of elevation of the current 100-year floodplain, Dura says, and the earthquake-driven tsunami could be more than 30 feet high.A good comparison might be the 2004 Sumatra earthquake and tsunami that killed more than 227,000 people around the Indian Ocean or the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami that killed more than 16,000 in Japan. Both caused subsidence, but the severity of the initial disaster far eclipsed concerns about coastal slump.Understanding the subsidence is important for preparation, however, Dura says. Municipal planners may want to avoid building new electrical substations or wastewater treatment plants in the areas that could become floodplains. (A 100-year floodplain has a 1 percent chance of flooding each year.) Tide- or storm-driven flooding of low-lying bridges, roadways and airports in the immediate aftermath of the quake could affect evacuation efforts and rescue attempts. And many people may find that property that was once safe from flooding is now regularly inundated, particularly in built-up areas such as Seaside, Ore., Gearhart, Ore., and Grays Harbor County in Washington State, Dura says.“The tsunami is a process that takes minutes to hours after the earthquake,” she says, “whereas, once the tsunami recedes, we’re still going to have the land level that has dropped down and changed the floodplain footprint.”

Xbox hardware revenue continues to tumble, but gaming revenue is up, Microsoft reports
Xbox hardware revenue continues to tumble, but gaming revenue is up, Microsoft reports As Q3 earnings revealed. News by Matt Wales News Reporter Published on April 30, 2025 Microsoft has shared its financial earnings for the third quarter of its 2025 fiscal year, and there's good news for Xbox - with gaming revenue up, despite hardware revenue continuing to fall. As a whole, Microsoft made $70.1bn in revenue during Q3 and saw a net income of $25.8bn, marking a 13 and 18 percent year-over-year increase respectively. That growth was predominantly driven by its Cloud and Office services, but its gaming division saw success too. Overall, Xbox gaming revenue was up five percent year-over-year, and within that, Xbox content and services - which includes Microsoft's first-party game releases and Game Pass - saw an eight percent increase. While the quarter saw Avowed launch for Xbox and PC, the company primarily attributed its Q3 gaming growth to Call of Duty and Minecraft. Additionally, Game Pass subscriptions are up - but it's unclear by how much, given membership figures haven't been revised since Microsoft revealed they'd crossed 34m last February. These successes were offset, however, by a continuing decline in Xbox hardware numbers over Q3, with console sales falling by six percent year-on-year. Xbox's hardware slump has coincided with Microsoft's continuing efforts to pursue a platform agnostic approach for its releases, with its various cloud gaming partnerships meaning Game Pass titles can be streamed on everything from Meta Quest headsets to TVs. Even so, Microsoft has repeatedly indicated it has no intention of backing out of the console market; not only has it discussed various Xbox handheld plans, it's confirmed work on an Xbox Series X/S is well underway. Xbox president Sarah Bon previously said this new console would focus on "delivering the largest technical leap that you will have ever seen in a hardware generation", and recent reports have claimed Microsoft is currently aiming for a 2027 release.

The Best Boll & Branch Sheets, Tested by AD Editors (2025)
A good night’s sleep is as important to us as not missing a deadline. That’s why we prize sheets that feel like a retreat from the busy day, and Boll & Branch sheets, an AD-favorite bedding brand, are making this happen. Both AD commerce director, Rachel Fletcher, and contributor Yelena Alpert are drawn to the company’s sustainability ethos and efforts—it’s Fair Trade–certified (you can even trace the origin of your items) and doesn’t use harmful chemicals in the manufacturing process. All of the sheet styles have an Oeko-Tex tag. The organic cotton is pesticide-free as Boll & Branch uses marigolds on their farms in place of synthetic alternatives, and the farming methods use less water.Of all the materials Fletcher has tested—percale, Supima cotton, and linen—the signature sateen bedding made from long-staple cotton was the most impressive and lived up to the hype. “That extra-soft feel, paired with the lovely, cooling properties, makes them feel like the luxury sheets they are,” she says. With more than 8,500 reviews, it’s a Boll & Branch bestseller known for its buttery softness.Rachel FletcherBoll & Branch Signature Hemmed Sheet SetThese are made of long-staple cotton fibers that promise to give you even more comfort wash after wash, and Fletcher can attest that after multiple cycles, there is still no fraying or pilling, “just that coveted softness which feels lived-in but not worn out.” And since the elastic banding on the fitted sheet is top-stitched, loose threads are unlikely. Fletcher also appreciates the earthy tones of the mineral colorway of her sheets and the hem detail is a “really nice visual touch.” The collection comes in 17 solid colorways and eight patterns, which include small and large floral motifs, as well as stripes. While these sheets are a pricey investment, she 100% recommends these. “They really are some of the softest sheets I’ve ever tried,” she adds.Alpert recently tested the linen sheet set, also in the mineral hue. “The draping quality of these is really something,” she says. “When you sleep in these, it feels like a weekend morning, every morning. I really don’t want to get out of bed because these sheets are like a cozy embrace.”Photo: Yelena Mroz AlpertBoll & Branch Linen Sheet SetThe Boll & Branch linen sheets are made of European flax and go through a four-step washing process that makes them exceptionally smooth. (Some other linen sheets can feel a bit coarse because of the bumpy slubs of the weave.) “It’s a noticeable difference,” says Alpert, who has quite literally compared four linen bedding brands side to side in one day. “It’s extremely light and airy. When I parachute it over my bed, I can see right through it, which gives it that heirloom quality.’Another perk to consider is that the fitted sheets of both the signature and the linen sets have deep pockets (17 inches!), so your bedding fits seamlessly over a plush mattress, even if it has a topper. She’s also a little obsessed with the color, which reads like a moody stormy cloud but is very easy on the eyes. It pairs beautifully with crisp whites and soft grays.Like Fletcher, Alpert agrees that these are definitely an investment, but one that is worthwhile. “I don’t see myself swapping these out anytime soon,” she says. Plus, because they are both cooling and cozy, she plans to use them year-around. In fact, she has her eye on the terra-cotta colorway. But if you still need to decide whether you prefer the signature sateen or the linen, Boll & Branch offers free swatches to discover even more offerings. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself adding a duvet cover to your cart or exploring its wide array of floral and embroidered sheets, too.

DOGE Put a College Student in Charge of Using AI to Rewrite Regulations
Another source told WIRED that Sweet has also been using the tool at other parts of HUD. WIRED reviewed a copy of the output of the AI’s review of one HUD department, which features columns displaying text that the AI model found to be needing an adjustment while also including suggestions from the AI for alterations to be made, essentially proposing rewrites. The spreadsheet details how many words can be eliminated from individual regulations and gives a percentage figure indicating how noncompliant the regulations are. It isn’t clear how these percentages are calculated.Sweet did not respond to requests for comment regarding his work. In response to a request to clarify Sweet’s role at HUD, a spokesperson for the agency said they do not comment on individual personnel. The University of Chicago confirmed to WIRED that Sweet is “on leave from the undergraduate college.”It’s unclear how Sweet was recruited to DOGE, but a public GitHub account indicates that he was working on this issue even before he joined Musk’s demolition crew.Got a Tip?Are you a current or former government employee who wants to talk about what's happening? We'd like to hear from you. Using a nonwork phone or computer, contact the reporter securely on Signal at davidgilbert.01 and vittoria89.82.The “CLSweet” GitHub account, which WIRED has linked to Sweet, created an application that tracks and analyzes federal government regulations “showing how regulatory burden is distributed across government agencies.” The application was last updated in March 2025, weeks before Sweet joined HUD.One HUD source who heard about Sweet’s possible role in revising the agency’s regulations said the effort was redundant, since the agency was already “put through a multi-year multi-stakeholder meatgrinder before any rule was ever created” under the Administrative Procedure Act. (This law dictates how agencies are allowed to establish regulations and allows for judicial oversight over everything an agency does.)Another HUD source said Sweet’s title seemed to make little sense. “A programmer and a quantitative data analyst are two very different things,” they noted.Sweet has virtually no online footprint. One of the only references to him online is a short biography on the website of East Edge Securities, an investment firm Sweet founded in 2023 with two other students from the University of Chicago. The biography is short on details but claims that Sweet has worked in the past with several private equity firms, including Pertento Partners, which is based in London, and Tenzing Global Investors, based in San Francisco. He is also listed as a board member of Paragon Global Investments, which is a student-run hedge fund. The biography also mentions that Sweet “will be joining Nexus Point Capital as a private equity summer analyst.” The company has headquarters in Hong Kong and Shanghai and describes itself as “an Asian private equity fund with a strategic focus on control opportunities in the Greater China market.”East Edge Securities, Pertento Partners, Tenzing Global Investors, Paragon Global Investments, and Nexus Point Capital did not respond to requests for comment. The only other online account associated with Sweet appears to be a Substack account using the same username as the GitHub account. That account has not posted any content and follows mostly finance and market-related newsletters. It also follows Bari Weiss’ The Free Press and the newsletter of Marc Andreessen, the Silicon Valley billionaire investor and group chat enthusiast who said he spent a lot of time advising Trump and his team after the election.DOGE representatives have been at HUD since February, when WIRED reported that two of those staffers were given application-level access to some of the most critical and sensitive systems inside the agency.Earlier this month, US representative Maxine Waters, the top Democrat on the House Financial Services Committee, said DOGE had “infiltrated our nation’s housing agencies, stealing funding Congress provided to communities, illegally terminating staff, including in your districts, and accessing confidential data about people living in assisted housing, including sexual assault survivors.”

Nintendo rolls out Virtual Game Cards to Switch: cue confusion and anger from folks who can reportedly no longer play the same game online on two consoles
Cardfusion Nintendo rolls out Virtual Game Cards to Switch: cue confusion and anger from folks who can reportedly no longer play the same game online on two consoles An apparent "loophole" that you can only explain in short essay form has seemingly been closed with this pre-Switch 2 Switch switch. Image credit: Nintendo News by Mark Warren Senior Staff Writer Published on April 30, 2025 Right, if you were hoping to play a single copy of the same game online across two Nintendo Switch 2s, it appears you're out of luck. Nintendo's rolled out its new Virtual Game Cards to the classic Switch via an update that lays the groundwork for the new console, and it's reportedly gotten rid of the ability play the same digital copy online on two systems simulataneously. This was first identified by folks on ResetEra, who clearly downloaded the Switch software version 20.0.0 that Ninty's just released and immediately decided to have some fun with a mate. The change itself is seemingly a bit of murky one - the method it's nixed was viewed by some players as a cheeky "loophole" and its striking from the record looks to just be down to the different way that Game Cards handle Switch games. To see this content please enable targeting cookies. Basically, what people had previously been doing in order to play Switch games online with a mate is logging into the game owner's account on two different Switch consoles - a 'primary' one and a 'secondary' one. The primary one would see the game owner set up their copy of the game, then hand over to the second player who'd sign in to their own account and still be able to fire up the instyalled game to play online. Then, the game owner would turn on the 'secondary' Switch, log into their account to install that same game, then be able to play it online. Boom, two people on two Switches playinmg the same digital copy of a game online together, via a method that's a lot easier to do than it to explain without twisting your tongue and tonsils together. However, with the deployment of these Virtual Game Cards, it's reportedly no longer possible to follow that and play online, because the Game Cards treat digital games like a single cartrige. However, simultaneous offline play looks like it's still on the table, even if it'll require you to set your Switch as offline via a new Online License option in the settings. Naturally, folks who love a good bit of online play with a mate and don't want to have to buy two copies of a game are pretty unhappy with Nintendo having gotten rid of something they'd been doing on the reg just before it drops its new console. The word "downgrade" is being chucked about in the thread I linked earlier Now, the Switch 2 isn't here yet, so there's a chance Nintendo sees the backlash and comes up with a solution - or at least makes it clear whether features like Gameshare, which has also been rolled out with this Switch update and currently will let you play some games online together via local wireless, will become a fully-blown catch-all replacement for the method that's been taken off the table. Were you regularly using this method to share your Switch library and play online with your mates, partner, or Grandma? Let us know below!

Visa and Mastercard unveil AI-powered shopping
Artificial intelligence is not just infiltrating the startup world. Now, credit card giants Visa and Mastercard are getting into the AI game. Visa announced on Wednesday “Intelligent Commerce,” which it says enables AI “to find and buy.” AI agents will be able to shop and make purchases on behalf of consumers, based on preselected preferences. In a statement, Visa Chief Product and Strategy Officer Jack Forestell said: “Each consumer sets the limits, and Visa helps manage the rest.” Visa says that it is collaborating with a mix of tech giants and startups to develop AI-powered shopping experiences that are “more personal, more secure, and more convenient.” Those companies include Anthropic, IBM, Microsoft, Mistral AI, OpenAI, Perplexity, Samsung, and Stripe, among others. The move follows Mastercard’s announcement on Tuesday that it would give AI agents the ability to shop online for consumers. Mastercard said its new Agent Pay offering “will enhance generative AI conversations for people and businesses alike” by integrating payments into tailored recommendations and insights already provided on conversational platforms. In a statement, it said: “This means that for a soon-to-be-30-year-old planning her milestone birthday party, she can now chat with an AI agent to proactively curate a selection of outfits and accessories from local boutiques and online retailers based on her style, the venue’s ambience, and weather forecasts. Based on her preferences and feedback, the intelligent agent can make the purchase, and also recommend the best way to pay, for example, using Mastercard One Credential.” Mastercard said it will work with Microsoft on new use cases to scale “agentic commerce,” as well as with IBM, Braintree, and Checkout.com on other aspects of AI-powered shopping.  Visa and Mastercard aren’t the only ones allowing for AI-powered shopping. On Tuesday, PayPal announced its own agentic commerce offering. And, earlier this month, Amazon announced the start of testing of a new AI shopping agent, a feature it calls “Buy for Me,” with a subset of users.OpenAI, Google, and Perplexity have also showcased similar agents that can visit websites and help users make purchases. OpenAI said Monday that it was updating ChatGPT search, its web search tool in ChatGPT, to give users an improved online shopping experience. Asteria, Animal Pictures Announce ‘Uncanny Valley’ Hybrid Feature
Asteria has announced its first feature length hybrid film, Uncanny Valley, which will blend traditional storytelling techniques with AI technologies powered by “Marey,” the first clean foundational AI model developed by Moonvalley. The company was just in the news last week with its announcement of the upcoming release of The Odd Birds Show, an animated short film series that uses hand-drawn animation, VR puppeteering, rendered 3D assets, motion tracking, and AI tools. Uncanny Valley is a collaboration between Natasha Lyonne (Russian Doll, Poker Face), making her directorial debut, Brit Marling (The OA, A Murder at the End of the World), VR pioneer Jaron Lanier, and Asteria. Lyonne and Marling will co-star in the film. Additionally, the open world video game component will be co-created by Lyonne, Marling, and virtual reality pioneer Jaron Lanier. Set in a parallel present, the film follows Mila, a teenage girl who begins to lose her grip on reality as a globally popular augmented reality video game starts glitching with increasingly dangerous real-world consequences. “The scope of what’s possible with these new technologies when used ethically and creatively is astounding,” said Lyonne. “Bringing something so bold to life feels radically expansive and exciting. I’m immensely grateful for this opportunity from Asteria and to witness this emerging era from the front lines.” “Science fiction can be a powerful tool of resistance - imagining what could be instead of what is,” added Marling. “With Asteria’s team, we hope to pioneer ways to use AI that allow filmmakers to tell high-concept stories on budgets that allow for real innovation. Natasha and Jaron are true risk-takers, and collaborating with them has been incredible.” In addition to Asteria CEO Bryn Mooser, Justin Lacob will also serve as producer for Asteria as well as Zal Batmanglij, Marling, and Lyonne under her Animal Pictures banner. AML3D Reports Quarter Growth and Expands U.S. and European Operations
AML3D Limited, a company specializing in Wire Additive Manufacturing (WAM) and 3D metal printing solutions, has released its Quarterly Activities Report for the period ending 31 March 2025 (Q3FY25). The company reported break-even operating cash flow during the quarter, driven by A$2.5 million in customer receipts, supported by growth in the US market.  As of 31 March 2025, the company’s cash reserves stood at A$31.4 million, positioning AML3D to pursue its next phase of growth, which includes a A$12 million plan to scale up US production and a A$5 million investment to enter the European market. ARCEMY 2600 Small Edition 3D printer. Photo via AML3D. U.S. Market Expansion AML3D’s expansion in the US is positioned to meet rising demand, especially from the US Department of Defense and other industries. With the addition of a second ARCEMY large-scale Wire Additive Manufacturing system and the establishment of a manufacturing and technology hub in Ohio, the company is strengthening its presence in the US market.  This growth is further supported by a US$951 million award from the Department of Defense to Blue Forge Alliance (BFA) in early 2025, aimed at advancing manufacturing technologies for the US Navy‘s submarine industrial base. The company is providing ARCEMY systems to support the Navy’s submarine base, including the largest custom ARCEMY system ever installed at the Navy’s Daneville Centre of Excellence for Additive Manufacturing, managed by AUSTAL USA. During a 14-day tour across 10 US sites in the March 2025 quarter, CEO Sean Ebert met with US Senators, defense and industry partners. AML3D’s success with ARCEMY technology in the US Navy’s submarine industrial base positions the company to explore further additive manufacturing contracts across the US Navy marine industrial base. In addition to defense, AML3D is expanding into non-defense sectors such as utilities, aerospace, marine, and oil & gas. The company is fulfilling in A$2.27 million ARCEMY X order for the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), the largest US public utility, to support its power generation repair capabilities, with final commissioning set for the first half of 2026. AML3D has also delivered non-defense test components for Boeing and Chevron and holds a Manufacturing License Agreement with Boeing Defence and Space. The company’s AS9100D certification for aviation, space, and defense manufacturing was reaffirmed during a surveillance audit completed in March 2025. A large 3D printed shipbuilding component. Photo via AML3D. European, Australian Expansion AML3D is also focusing on expanding into the European market, initially targeting the UK defence sector. The company has signed a material feasibility contract with a tier-one UK defence contractor, marking the beginning of its efforts in the region. AML3D plans to replicate its successful US strategy by appointing a distributor and focusing on defence, with plans to explore additional opportunities in industries such as aerospace, marine, and oil and gas across Europe. In Australia, AML3D continues to support the defence sector by providing marine and aerospace test parts for the Defence Science and Technology Group. The company is also working on prototype components for BAE Systems Maritime Australia’s Hunter Class frigate program. These activities are expected to contribute to the company’s growth within the Australian defence sector, while AML3D is also exploring potential non-defence opportunities. One of the hunter class frigates. Photo via AML3D. Research and Development Investment AML3D is focused on advancing its technology through research and development investments. During the quarter, the company allocated half of its A$700,000 property, plant, and equipment investment to the ARCEMY Increased Deposition Rate (AIDR) project and the construction of a prototype AIDR system, which aims to increase the speed of component production. The South Australian Government has provided A$186,000 as part of the A$2.24 million funding agreement for this AIDR project. Financial Update and Outlook AML3D reported A$2.5 million in customer receipts for the March 2025 quarter, a 37% increase compared to the same period last year, including A$1 million in overdue payments from the previous quarter. The company’s strong cash position of A$31.4 million provides a solid foundation for continued investment in its US and European expansion efforts.  Looking ahead, AML3D is focused on furthering its work in the US defence sector and exploring new opportunities across both defence and non-defence markets.
