  • Getting Enough Sleep is Critical for Weight Loss and Maintenance

May 21, 20256 min readSleep Plays an Important Role in Sustainable Weight LossA sleep medicine specialist explains how restless nights lead to consuming more calories and how you can use sleep as a tool for weight lossBy Tammy Worth solidcolours/Getty ImagesThis Nature Outlook is editorially independent, produced with financial support from Avadel.A healthy diet and regular exercise have long been staples of weight management. But research shows that the role of sleep, which helps to regulate appetite hormones and calorie intake, is just as important. Esra Tasali, a sleep specialist at University of Chicago Medicine in Illinois and director of the UChicago Sleep Center, spoke to Nature about why getting sufficient sleep could be crucial to weight loss and maintenance. How did you end up studying sleep and weight loss?On supporting science journalismIf you're enjoying this article, consider supporting our award-winning journalism by subscribing. By purchasing a subscription you are helping to ensure the future of impactful stories about the discoveries and ideas shaping our world today. My sleep journey started about 25 years ago. I had completed my pulmonary training and decided to specialize in sleep medicine. I also trained in endocrinology, so it was natural for me to study the relationship between sleep and metabolic diseases, including obesity and diabetes.Would you say that sleep is as important for the body as it is for the brain?Absolutely! Sleep is inextricably linked to our biology and important for every cell in the body. Work at the University of Chicago has challenged the brain-centred view of sleep. As far back as 1999, we published a paper that showed that healthy young men who did not have obesity or diabetes, when sleep-deprived in a laboratory setting, show signs of prediabetes. And now we have the research to show that sleep is essential to regulating metabolism, appetite and hormones. Why does not getting enough sleep make us more susceptible to weight gain?Lack of sleep increases our drive to eat. There are two main reasons that this could happen. The first is that when we are sleep-deprived, our brain’s reward centres are more active and drive us to seek rewards. These include food, particularly high-calorie, unhealthy food. Our ability to inhibit the impulse to eat is diminished. The second mechanism driving increased calorie intake is elevations in appetite hormones. The most well-known is ghrelin, the ‘hunger hormone’, which is mainly secreted by the stomach. If you don’t sleep enough, levels of that hormone will be higher, and you will feel hungrier and consume more calories. Over the long term, this leads to weight gain. In 2022, we showed, in a real-world setting while people continued their daily activities in their home environment, that if you extend sleep by an average of 1.2 hours per night and monitor the energy intake among adults who are overweight, they decreased their intake by an average of 270 calories per day.How many hours of sleep should people aim for if they are trying to lose weight? In our study, we aimed for 8.5 hours of time in bed. So, a target of at least 8 hours in bed — and no less than 7 hours of sleep — would be a good start for an adult. But any increase in sleep time seems to help. Interestingly, we found an association between an increase in sleep duration and a decrease in calorie intake. Even an extra 30 minutes of sleep reduced the number of calories consumed. Many people would like to get more sleep, but have difficulty doing so. What kind of sleep intervention did you use in the study? We personalized the sleep-hygiene instructions — that is, we tailored them to each person’s schedule and specific needs. One strategy that worked for almost all participants was to insist that they put their electronic devices away at a certain time so that they wouldn’t hear those beeps and dings that draw them into social media, texting or e-mail.Does weight loss help sleep apnoea, in which a person’s breathing during sleep is interrupted?Yes — for people with sleep apnoea, a 10% reduction in body mass index reduces the apnoea’s severity by about one-third. And if you lose weight and improve your sleep apnoea, that might reduce your risk of type 2 diabetes, or make it less severe if you already have it. The fragmented, low-quality sleep associated with sleep apnoea, however, can compound the risk of obesity. So there’s a kind of a bidirectional interaction between excess weight and sleep apnoea. So, it’s not just the duration of sleep, but also sleep quality that plays a part in metabolism and diabetes risk?Yes, slow-wave sleep, often called deep sleep, is a key marker of sleep quality. This stage of sleep helps with memory consolidation, restoration at the cellular level and tissue repair, and the clearing out of metabolic waste products. It also has an important role in metabolism and hormonal release. For example, a major pulse of growth-hormone secretion occurs during slow-wave sleep. Our experimental work has shown that if you deprive healthy young adults of slow-wave sleep — to the levels seen in older adults, or in people with sleep apnoea — they show signs of prediabetes after just three days. This finding opened up an area of research that focused on the role of sleep quality in diabetes risk. And data emerging from large population studies suggest that adults who get sufficient slow-wave sleep have a lower future risk of developing diabetes. So finding ways to get enough slow-wave sleep seems to be important, particularly for younger people. Can wearable technology help people to get better sleep?Wearables have allowed people to become more aware of their sleep needs and patterns by helping them to monitor their sleep passively. But they don’t necessarily know what to do with this information they’re getting about their own sleep. What is missing are guided, personalized solutions to improve sleep for each individual. That is what we are working on in our new study. I think that, increasingly with wearables, people will start to see how their sleep is connected with other health parameters, such as heart rate, blood pressure and oxygen saturation. They might notice that improvement on those metrics correlate with better sleep, which can, in turn, lead to a change towards healthier sleep behaviours. How important do you think sleep is in the larger realm of weight-loss strategies?Getting enough sleep could really help to tackle the obesity epidemic. Its impact could be particularly great for younger people. We know that the obesity epidemic is even more pronounced than it used to be in children and young people. Teenagers are sleep-deprived for various reasons, including heavy use of electronics, social media, video gaming and, in some places, early school start times that work against teenagers’ natural circadian rhythms. To compensate for that sleep loss, they increase their food intake because they tend to be hungrier and reach for unhealthy foods, putting them on a high-risk trajectory for weight gain. So stopping that weight-gain spiral before it starts, at an early age, through healthier sleep habits, has enormous public-health implications for prevention or reversal of obesity.New weight-loss drugs, known as GLP-1 agonists, are effective against obesity. Is it still important to emphasize the importance of sleep in maintaining a healthy weight?Despite the increasing interest in the positive effects of GLP-1 agonists, there is still a lot of uncertainty about their long-term biological effects and how they will ultimately change people’s eating habits and lifestyle behaviours. They make you feel less hungry, but they also come with side effects and they’re quite expensive. Plus, when you stop these drugs, you rapidly regain weight. Sufficient sleep can also make you feel less hungry and help you to eat healthier foods; and the good news is that sleep is free, has no side effects, and has many other benefits to overall health and well-being.More than one-third of US adults are not getting enough sleep on a regular basis, which strongly increases their risk of chronic conditions, including obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Lack of sleep is estimated to cost the US economy close to half a trillion dollars per year. So I strongly believe that educating the public about the importance of adequate sleep in maintaining a healthy weight is crucial to preventing obesity and curbing the epidemic of chronic disease. This interview has been edited for length and clarity.

Remember Ubisoft's announcement last October it was currently in the "exploration phase" of a new Rayman project? Well, it seems full development has now been given the go ahead, with a recent job listing indicating the publisher is currently staffing up on a "AAA" Rayman game.

To rewind a bit, all this came about following reports last year that Ubisoft had assembled a small group of developers - including around a dozen members of its now-disbanded Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown team - to work on a remake of Rayman. Somewhat unusually, Ubisoft didn't immediately reach for the 'does not comment on rumours or speculation' button, instead confirming that, yes actually, it was sort of true. "We are pleased to confirm Ubisoft Montpellier and Ubisoft Milan have recently started an exploration phase on the Rayman brand," it said at the time. "The project is still in its early stages, and we will share more details later."

There was a sense, then, that nothing might come of the project if that "exploration phase" didn't bring encouraging results. But it now appears those initial experiments showed sufficient promise, because Ubisoft Milan is currently seeking a 3D gameplay animator to work on a "prestigious AAA title for the Rayman brand." There's also a second, slightly less specific job listing searching for a senior game designer to "work on the Rayman brand", but it seems likely both positions are related to the same project.

More of this sort of thing please Ubisoft.Watch on YouTube

So that's some encouraging news for Rayman fans, particularly given Ubisoft Montpellier and Milan's historically stellar output. Between them, the studios have released the acclaimed likes of Mario + Rabbids, the beautiful Valiant Hearts series, Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, plus Rayman Origins and Rayman Legends - two absolutely gold-standard 2D platformers.

The only troubling element of Rayman's revival is last year's controversial admission by Ubisoft that original Rayman creator Michel Ancel had been drafted in as a consultant. Ancel departed the publisher in 2020, allegedly following an investigation into employee complaints accusing him of toxic leadership, and his involvement with the new Rayman project was reported to have "raised some concerns among team members". It is, however, unclear if Ancel is still serving as a consultant now Ubisoft's initial "exploration phase" appears to be complete.

Signs that Rayman may be making a "AAA" return come at a challenging time for Ubisoft. The publisher has faced a tumultuous few years amid tumbling share prices and a number of high-profile flops, resulting in a string of layoffs and studio closures. As part of its attempts to right the ship, Ubisoft announced it was launching a new subsidiary dedicated to its big three IPs - Assassin's Creed, Rainbow Six, and Far Cry - earlier this year. With those game under a new banner, Ubisoft itself will concentrate on a number of key areas, including "nurturing the development of iconic franchises" - which is presumably where Rayman comes in.

More of this sort of thing please Ubisoft.Watch on YouTube So that's some encouraging news for Rayman fans, particularly given Ubisoft Montpellier and Milan's historically stellar output. #looks #like #ubisoft #giving #rayman

Image credit: Ubisoft News by Matt Wales News Reporter Published on May 21, 2025 Remember Ubisoft's announcement last October it was currently in the "exploration phase" of a new Rayman project? "The project is still in its early stages, and we will share more details later." There was a sense, then, that nothing might come of the project if that "exploration phase" didn't bring encouraging results. Baldur’s Gate 3 developer Larian Studios appears to be returning to its flagship Divinity franchise. After leaving BG3 behind with Patch 8, Larian is officially working on two new games.
While the studio has revealed that we won’t see their next title until 2028 at the earliest, Larian has seemingly teased what one of its next projects is. As expected, it appears the studio is working on some form of Divinity title.
    Is Larian returning to Divinity?
As spotted by numerous fans on social media, Larian Studios has overhauled its social profiles in a surprise move. Fans noticed that the official Larian Studios account changed its username to “@Divinity” for a few minutes before reverting back.
At the time of writing, Larian has reverted its social media profiles back to the standard “@Larianstudios” handle. This could mean that the studio is getting ready to reveal its upcoming Divinity project sometime in the near future.

Larian Studios’ Divinity series of RPGs has been the main IP of the Belgian development studio since 2002. The studio has released 7 games in the series over the past two decades with a cancelled title – Fallen Heroes – that was also in development.
Prior to Baldur’s Gate 3, the developer released two games in the Original Sin sub-series, dense CRPG titles that laid the path for its Dungeons and Dragons game. It’s not known if the studio is making Original Sin 3 or if it’s a brand-new sub-series.
For the future of Larian Studios, the developer has used the massive success of Baldur’s Gate to scale up massively. The studio has opened a brand-new storytelling department for its Guildford, England studio that will help to make even bigger, denser stories in its next games.

  • 10 Facts About Frank Lloyd Wright You Didn’t Know

20 Frank Lloyd Wright Houses That Changed AmericaThroughout the architect’s 70-year career, he created new blueprints for living that are still relevant to this dayWith a career that spanned 70 years, there are no shortage of facts about Frank Lloyd Wright to dissect. But it’s not just his buildings that offer fodder for intrigue, the architect was equally a magnet for personal controversy. With three wives and eight children, Wright spent much of his adult life racking up sensational, though not untrue, headlines like “Suit ends Wright Romance; Sculptress Who Fled With Architect to Japan Obtains Alimony”or “Issue Warrant for Wright; Architect's Wife Seeks to Re-enter Their Wisconsin Home”. Each refers to the personal tumult that seemed to follow the architect through much of his adult life.Scholars have long been tempted to link these fascinating personal dramas to the singular genius of Wright’s work, particularly in how the architect would come to shape 20th-century home life in the U.S. But for all that’s common knowledge about Wright, there are a number of tantalizing details lying just below the surface. Below, ten little-known facts that offer a glimpse into the architect’s fascinating life. The most fascinating facts about Frank Lloyd Wright1. Wright’s childhood nursery was decorated with engravings of English cathedralsIn his autobiography, Wright discusses how his mother prophesied his future as an architect, decorating his nursery with buildings to encourage this development. She also famously purchased her son a Froebel Gifts block set, and used it heavily in his early childhood education.2. Wright abandoned his practice for a year in 1909 to run away with Mamah Borthwick CheneyThe pair were first connected in 1903 when Cheney and her husband Edwin commissioned Wright to build their Oak Park, Illinois, home. The amorous couple abandoned their spouses, children, and livesin 1909 to spend a year together in Europe before relocating to Taliesin in 1911. This elopement would estrange Wright from several of his children for decades to come. The Edwin Cheney house in Oak Park, Illinois

A disgruntled servant carried out a brutal seven-person murder at Wright’s Taliesin estate in 1914While Wright was away on business in Chicago in 1914, a disgruntled servant at Taliesin set the structure’s living quarters on fire before murdering seven of the home’s residents, including Wright’s then-partner, Mamah Borthwick Cheney. The incident has been dramatized several times, including in an opera called Shining Browthat premiered in 1993 and the 2007 novel Loving Frank by Nancy Horan.4. Wright was vehemently against the American Institute of ArchitectsWright was famous for his disdain for other architects, and he refused to join the AIA. According to the biography Frank Lloyd Wright by Meryle Secrest, Wright would refer to it as the “American Institute of Appearances,” and make other disparaging remarks about the institution publicly. “His slights had the effect of maintaining the gulf between himself and other professionals and of adding further weight to the idea of himself as a gifted maverick, an iconoclast,” Secrest writes. In 1926, Wright was arrested in violation of the Mann Act, a stipulation that made it illegal for men to transport women across state lines for “immoral” purposesThough his divorce with second wife Miriam Noel was not yet final in 1926, Wright was already in a committed relationship with the woman who would become his third wife, Olgivanna Lazovich Hinzenburg. The pair had met at a Russian ballet and had a daughter together, Iovanna, in 1925. Yakuza 0 Director’s Cut Red Light Raid Mode is baffling, totally on-brand, and a weirdly good fit as part of a Nintendo Switch 2 launch game
Here me out, this tacked-on multiplayer mode might actually justify some of the Switch 2’s more controversial features.

In Sega’s offices, seated in front of a Nintendo Switch 2 console running Yakuza 0 Director’s Cut, I was told: “Right, now it’s time to make a lobby.” Jesus. I don’t know these people here at the event with me. This is going to be awful. S**t. S**t. S**t.
The PR comes over, loads me into one of the most rudimentary lobbies I’ve seen in a game in the last 20 years, and we get going. I’m presented with a screen that looks like something from a 00s fighting gamewhere I’m asked to select one character from the entire Yakuza 0 roster. I choose Goro Majima, obviously.

To see this content please enable targeting cookies.

The lead player boots us into a game, and we’re off: four ragtag Yakuza 0 models - antagonists, people you’ll see in side missions, and major characters all together - start fending off waves of hired goons. It’s stupid: four men yelling, powering up, and battering wave after wave of leather jacket-wearing thugs in the middle of a Japanese street in the 80s. Someone gets pile-drivered into a bin. Someone spins around whilst brandishing a knife until they fall over. This is Yakuza, alright, and it works weirdly well in multiplayer.
And there’s the thing, then. This version of Yakuza 0 is a Switch 2 exclusive. So if you want to try out this baffling rumpus of a mode, you’re going to need to shell out the £45 asking price. Is it worth it? Probably not on its own, but it is a fascinating insight into how Sega, and probably Nintendo, sees what the Switch 2 is putting down for consumers.
This mode, Red Light Raid, is silly fun. It’s an arcade-inspired, wave-based curio that focuses solely on the game’s esoteric combat and pushes the brawling mechanics of the game to breaking point in makeshift arenas that can barely contain the game’s burgeoning chaos. I imagine that with a fully-working GameChat function, you and your mates can have a blast in this mode; shouting about taking down bosses, squabbling over who gets to keep which item as they fall on the floor, jostling over weapons dropped by thugs. It’ll be fun.
It’s also a fascinating way for the RGG Studio folks to reuse assets in a fun way; the character select screen is huge. It’s got 60 playable characters! And you can level up each of the fighters, too. Completionists, watch out. I imagine it’ll take forever. Notably, if you’re playing as either Kiryu or Majima, you'll have to choose just one style. Otherwise you’d have an unfair advantage via style switching, especially over characters like those found in the fight club that are limited to quite a small selection of moves. Then again, Ginger Chapman has a knife, and Vengeful Otake has a gun. So.

Get ready for a new challenger. | Image credit: Sega

I really can imagine whole nights of sitting in this mode and working through the various courses RGG has set you as a gauntlet. It was all a bit braindead in the early levels I played with my erstwhile colleagues at the event, but I should hope that the later levels ramp up the challenge to some degree, at least.
Chatting with mates, thumping waifs and strays over and over again, and being able to see their little low-res faces as they get their asses handed to them by shirtless men with back tattoos… is that Nintendo’s vision for the Switch 2? To have us all collected in a little lobby like the Uno/Xbox 360 days, gawping at cartoonish hyperviolence on our tiny little 4K monitors? If that’s what Ninty is putting down, I guess that’s what I’m picking up. It sounds great.
But it’s weird that it’s on Sega and RGG to release a game like this - as a launch exclusive - on Switch 2. There are other draws, sure: 26 minutes of never-before-scene cutscenes, and a French, Italian, German and Spanish text option now, too. As well as an English voiceover. So there are small temptations for you to double-dip on this, but as a locked exclusive it feels peculiar.

Watch your back. | Image credit: Sega

But isn’t it that exact sort-of off-beat weirdness that we all love Nintendo for? In a way, it reminds me of the bizarre bonus content that Tekken Tag Tournament 2 got for the Nintendo Wii U that never made it to other platforms: Mushroom Battle mode and Tekken Ball, which were sorely missed elsewhere. But it wanted to play into the Wii U’s ‘social’ side more, similar to what RGG and Sega is doing here with Red Light Raid mode… I just don’t really know who it’s for.
It’s not bad. It’s fun! And it plays really well. But you have to assume it’s going to come to other platforms, too, hopefully alongside a cheaper upgrade option so that you don’t have to buy the full product just to get the ‘definitive’ version of the game. As a product on Switch 2, it looks, plays, and feels great… but let’s just hope it’s not locked onto the platform forever.

Yakuza 0 Director's Cut launches alongside Nintendo Switch 2 on June 5. Yakuza 0 originally released in 2015 on PS3 and PS4, later coming to Xbox One.

Legend of Goro Yakuza 0 Director’s Cut Red Light Raid Mode is baffling, totally on-brand, and a weirdly good fit as part of a Nintendo Switch 2 launch game Here me out, this tacked-on multiplayer mode might actually justify some of the Switch 2’s more controversial features. Image credit: VG247 Article by Dom Peppiatt Editor-in-chief Published on May 21, 2025 In Sega’s offices, seated in front of a Nintendo Switch 2 console running Yakuza 0 Director’s Cut, I was told: “Right, now it’s time to make a lobby.” Jesus. | Image credit: Sega I really can imagine whole nights of sitting in this mode and working through the various courses RGG has set you as a gauntlet. | Image credit: Sega But isn’t it that exact sort-of off-beat weirdness that we all love Nintendo for? #yakuza #directors #cut #red #light

  • Yooka-Laylee Dev Playtonic Is The Latest Studio Hit By Layoffs

Image: PlaytonicA handful of staff at UK-based studio Playtonic, best known for creating Yooka-Laylee and for forming the indie publishing label Playtonic Friends, are sharing messages on social media as they have been made "redundant" at the developer.
We were first alerted to the news by a Bluesky post from former community manager Steve James, who left the company just two weeks ago.
"Should be a week of happiness and positivity for me but instead I’m sad, angry and concerned for my former colleagues." Steve says "Many talented folks are “at risk” of redundancy at Playtonic, if you see them posting for jobs, please help them out."
On LinkedIn, Steve along with current brand manager at Playtonic Anni Valkama have been sharing posts from former colleagues who are now looking for work.
These include Junior VFX Artist Joupin Ahmed and Assistant Producer Mae Davidson. Alongside them, UI Artists James Feakins is "at risk of redundancy". We hope those affected land on their feet and wish them the best.
Playtonic Friends is just lining up to release Castle Pixel's Cattle Country, a Western life/farm sim. On the main dev side, it's also working on a remake of its very first game, titled Yooka-Replaylee, which is coming to Switch 2.
And, unfortunately, things aren't getting any easier as layoffs continue to pummel the industry, with EA and Respawn taking a huge blow just a few weeks ago. Long-standing online publication Polygon was also hit by layoffs after being sold by Vox Media to Valnet. Sadly, these are just a couple of recent examples.
We've reached out to Playtonic's Managing Director Gavin Price for comment.

  • Spotify says support for external payments on iOS has already boosted subscriptions

Spotify says its ability to direct its customers to external payment links in its iOS app has already had a positive impact on sales. In a newly filed amicus brief in support of Epic Games in its ongoing legal battle with Apple over external payments on the App Store, Spotify claims its internal data indicates that its recent update supporting web payments has resulted in “a significant increase in iOS users upgrading to a Premium subscription.”
Shortly after the U.S. District Court in Northern California ruled in favor of Fortnite maker Epic Games on the matter of external payments, Apple was forced to finally allow U.S. app developers to direct their customers to other ways to pay from within their iOS apps without having to pay Apple’s commission.
Now, iOS app developers in the U.S. can choose to tell their customers about web billing options and whether there’s a discount for paying directly.
Spotify was one of the first to update its iOS app to take advantage of the new policy. The updated version explains to customers what subscriptions cost, points them to its website to purchase, and allows users to purchase audiobooks directly.
The results have been largely positive, Spotify wrote in the new filing.
“The 2025 Order has created substantial benefits for developers and — more importantly — consumers,” the filing states. “Spotify’s internal data show that its iOS app updates have already resulted in a significant increase in iOS users upgrading to a Premium subscription. Apple’s compliance has also enabled new product innovations that would not have been possible without the Injunction.”
Spotify said that its revised “Premium Destination Page” in its iOS app tells free users how to upgrade to a paid subscription by offering information about prices and a link to a checkout page. Since adding the link and pricing information, Spotify says it’s seen the immediate impact of the changes.

In the two weeks the new page has been live, Spotify says the rate of conversions from the free to Premium tier has remained “relatively constant” on Android, where Spotify has already been able to offer basic pricing information.
Meanwhile, the conversion rate among iOS users has increased substantially, the company says.
“This strongly suggests that the increase is due to Apple finally complying with the Injunction thanks to the 2025 Order,” Spotify wrote. Plus, the company adds that it’s beginning to see the effects on audiobook purchases just three days after the new product options were launched.
Spotify declined to share specific numbers related to the increases when reached for comment.
Its brief joins those from Microsoft and others in support of Epic Games, as Apple tries to fight the injunction that upended its U.S. App Store business.
Apple doesn’t want to comply with the court’s decision, which it’s in the process of appealing, until all legal matters are fully settled.
It also tried to keep Epic Games’ Fortnite out of the App Store for the same reason, but the judge pressured Apple to allow the game back in the App Store or return to court to explain why Apple was in non-compliance with the ruling.
On Tuesday, Fortnite went live on the U.S. App Store after a five-year hiatus.
The case between Apple and Epic now continues in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. Apple filed an Emergency Motion so it could revert to its old policy while its appeal was underway. However, the court decided not to grant the motion, saying the panel of judges would follow the default briefing schedule and then rule on the motion in “due course.”
