  • Lies of P Developer is Adding Difficulty Options With Overture’s Launch

Lies of P director Jiwon Choi has spoken about making Overture, the upcoming expansion, accessible and enjoyable to veteran players and newcomers. With a wave of new previews dropping, Choi has since confirmed to VGC that it will launch alongside an update that adds difficulty options.
Available for the base game and expansion, the new difficulty options are called “Butterfly’s Guidance” and “Awakened Puppet.” The default difficulty will henceforth be known as “Legendary Stalker”.
Regarding the decision to include difficulty options, Choi said, “We wanted to make sure a wider audience of players could play the game.” He also confirmed that they were implemented based on player and developer feedback.
“So by making development adjustments and introducing these difficulty options, we can offer the experience to different types of players. This broadens the base.”
Lies of P: Overture launches this Summer for Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PS4, PS5, and PC. Choi previously said it would take 15 to 20 hours for experienced players to complete; how this shakes out on lower difficulties remains to be seen.
Unfortunately, there is no connection to the post-credits scene from the base game. You probably have to wait for Lies of P 2 to learn more, which is potentially developed on Unreal Engine 5 per this job listing.

  • This Record-Setting Robot Can Solve a Rubik's Cube Faster Than You Can Blink

This Record-Setting Robot Can Solve a Rubik’s Cube Faster Than You Can Blink
Designed by a group of undergraduate students at Purdue University, the robot completes the puzzle in 0.103 seconds

"Purdubik's Cube" was developed and built by undergraduate students Junpei Ota, Aden Hurd, Matthew Patrohay and Alex Berta.
    Purdue University

Blink and you might miss it: A new robot developed by college students can solve a Rubik’s Cube in 0.103 seconds, setting a new world record.
“We solve in 103 milliseconds,” says Matthew Patrohay, one of the electrical and computer engineering undergraduates at Purdue University who designed and built the robot, in an announcement from the university. “A human blink takes about 200 to 300 milliseconds. So, before you even realize it’s moving, we’ve solved it.”
The high-speed robotic system—named “Purdubik’s Cube”—now holds the Guinness World Record for the fastest robot to solve a puzzle cube. Patrohay, along with fellow students Junpei Ota, Aden Hurd and Alex Berta, officially set the record in a laboratory on the university’s campus in West Lafayette, Indiana, on April 21.
Purdubik’s Cube handily beat the previous record of 0.305 seconds, which was set last year by a Mitsubishi Electric robot.
“said, ‘You know what? I think we can do better,’” says Milind Kulkarni, who leads the university’s electrical and computer engineering department, in a video accompanying the statement.
Though developing the robot was a team effort, it was Patrohay who initially spearheaded the project. His love affair with the scrambled, multicolored puzzle cube dates back to the fourth grade.
“There was a competition, and you get a prize if you could solve it, and I could never solve it,” he tells NPR’s Ailsa Chang. “And I wanted to win the prize, so a few friends and I tried to learn how to solve it.”
Then, while he was in high school, he heard about a pair of MIT students who’d designed a robot that solved a Rubik’s Cube in 0.380 seconds in 2018. He was immediately intrigued.
“I thought, ‘Hey, someday, I should try and beat that,’ and here I am,” he tells NPR.

When Patrohay got to Purdue, he learned everything he could to make his dream a reality. After spending time building the necessary skills for the project, the group actually constructed the robot in just one semester for their senior design class.
To develop a robot that could solve a Rubik’s Cube in record time, the students integrated several systems and technologies, including machine vision for color recognition, custom algorithms and industrial-grade motion control hardware.
They also optimized the Rubik’s Cube itself, designing a strong, custom internal core to hold all the pieces together as it moves at a rapid pace.
“The cubes themselves just kind of disintegrate,” Patrohay says in the video. “The pieces just snap in half and fall apart.”
Though 0.103 seconds is fast, Patrohay is optimistic that Purdubik’s Cube might be able to work even faster.
“We’re going to give one last little effort to try and push below 100 milliseconds, so we can say we’re even faster,” he says in the video. “But realistically, I think 103 milliseconds is going to be very tough to beat.”
The Rubik’s Cube was invented in 1974 by Hungarian architect Ernő Rubik. Five decades later, it’s the most popular puzzle toy in the world—especially among “speedcubers,” or competitors who try to solve it as quickly as possible.
For humans, the world record for solving a 3x3x3 rotating puzzle cube is 3.05 seconds, set by Xuanyi Geng of China a little more than a month ago. “Speedcubers” have also set world records for solving them while underwater, while running 100 meters, while blindfolded, while roller skating, while upside down and while juggling.

Ubisoft CEO to be summoned to court in Ubisoft harassment trial
Yves Guillemot and HR director Marie Derain will be summoned to highlight the alleged "systemic nature of harassment" at Ubisoft

Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot and human resources director Marie Derain will be summoned to court to testify in the trial of three former Ubisoft executives accused of sexist and racist behaviors.
As reported by the union Solidaires Informatique via VGC, Guillemot and Derain have been called in the trial of Serge Hascoet, Tommy Francois, and Guillaume Patrux, all of whom have been accused of sexual harassment. After delays pertaining to errors by the prosecution, the trial is set to begin on June 2, 2025.
Former chief creative officer Serge Hascoët and ex-VP of editorial and creative services Tommy François both left the publisher in summer 2020, following allegations of widespread abuse, harassment, and discrimination within Ubisoft, including claims against the two executives. In all, five former executives from Ubisoft were arrested by French police in 2023 following a year-long investigation into sexual assault and harassment within the company.
"Beyond the personal responsibility of these three executives, this trial will highlight Ubisoft's responsibility in setting up a system aimed at keeping harassers in place while silencing their victims," the union said.
"As Mr. Beckers indicated during the March hearing, 'this case is broader and involves many more people, both on the side of the victims and the defendants.' It is not a question of a few individual actions, but of a well-oiled mechanism of insularity, work organization, and management that allowed this violence to continue within the company for years. One of the defendants' lawyers himself said: 'Ubisoft is the ghost of the case.'"
The statement said Guillemot and Derain had been summoned to highlight the "systemic nature of harassment" at Ubisoft.
Last week, Ubisoft released its financial results for the full 2024-25 fiscal year, reporting a "solid balance sheet" and "very strong praise" for Assassin's Creed Shadows - which delivered the second-highest Day One sales in franchise history after Valhalla - despite hefty drops in revenue, net bookings, digital net bookings, and back-catalog net bookings across the year.

  • Windows 95 chime composer Brian Eno denounces Microsoft for its ties to Israeli government

Artist and musician Brian Eno — who also composed the iconic Windows 95 operating system startup chime — called on Microsoft today to “suspend all services that support any operations that contribute to violations of international law,” saying the company plays a role in “surveillance, violence, and destruction in Palestine.” It’s the latest high-profile instance of the tech giant being pressed on its contracts with the Israeli government.“I gladly took on theproject as a creative challenge and enjoyed the interaction with my contacts at the company,” Eno wrote on Instagram. “I never would have believed that the same company could one day be implicated in the machinery of oppression and war.”The musician — who was a member of the influential rock band Roxy Music and has also had a long, storied solo career — specifically called out Microsoft’s contracts with Israel’s Ministry of Defense. Microsoft acknowledged last week that it has contracts with the Israeli government for cloud and AI services, but claimed that an internal review conducted found “no evidence” that its tools were used to “target or harm people” in Gaza.Microsoft has been taken to task in recent weeks over its business dealings with the Israeli government specifically. The outcry over Microsoft’s contracts with Israel relates to the ongoing bombardment of Gaza following Hamas attacks on Israel on October 7th, 2023. Human rights groups, including commissions at the United Nations, have accused Israel of war crimes and genocidal acts in its military operation that has killed thousands; as of this month, the Gaza Health Ministry reported more than 52,000 deaths, though some researchers say that number could be as high as 109,000 people. Some of Microsoft’s fiercest critics are its own employees opposed to the company’s ties to Israel.Earlier this week during Microsoft’s developer conference, multiple onstage events were disrupted, including CEO Satya Nadella’s keynote speech on Monday. During the event, Microsoft employee Joe Lopez interrupted Nadella, yelling, “How about you show Israeli war crimes are powered by Azure?” The following day, a protester described only as a “Palestinian tech worker” disrupted another executive’s presentation. On Wednesday, protesters disrupted a third session — and in the commotion, Microsoft inadvertently revealed internal messages regarding Walmart’s use of AI.In April, Microsoft employee Ibtihal Aboussad disrupted a 50th-anniversary event, calling Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman “a war profiteer.” Another employee disrupted a second Microsoft event the same day. The acts of protest were organized by the No Azure for Apartheid group, which calls for Microsoft to terminate contracts with the Israeli government and endorse a permanent ceasefire, among other demands. Aboussad was fired from the company; the second protester, Vaniya Agrawal, was dismissed early after putting in her resignation.Microsoft did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Eno, a longtime critic of the Israeli government who’s backed pro-Palestine efforts, said on Instagram he would use his original earnings from the Windows 95 startup chime to help “the victims of the attacks on Gaza.”See More:

  • New Street Fighter Movie: Who Is Playing Who?

“Can’t you do better than that?” This is one of the many legendary taunts offered up by victory screens in 1991’s Street Fighter II—in this case by E. Honda, a sumo wrestler who proves to be a surprisingly good boxer—but it probably refers to the opinions of a lot of gamers about the two live-action Street Fighter movies that have so far been made. Despite the iconic fighting video game series being one of the touchstones of ’90s gaming culture, and one which still produces genre-shaping hits as indicated by 2023’s Street Fighter 6, Hollywood has struggled to make a good movie out of the franchise.
That might be changing if Legendary Pictures has anything to do with it. The studio behind the American Godzilla and Kong “MonsterVerse” movies is visibly moving forward with their new take on a big screen Street Fighter, and as first reported by Deadline, they have the growing cast to prove it.

As per the trade site, Andre Koji, Noah Centineo, Roman Reigns, and no less than Jason Momoa have been cast in undisclosed roles in the film. Furthermore, the film is slated to be directed by Kitao Sakurai. Obviously this will prove to be just the beginning of an ensemble that has plenty of space to grow—the original and still most influential Street Fighter II game features 12 characters alone in its most base version—but already from these four male leads, we get an idea of who might be the main characters for the new cinematic interpretation… as well as perhaps what direction the series could be taking.

    Andrew Koji
Let’s start with the most obvious bit of casting: Andrew Koji is almost certainly intended to play Ryu, the Street Fighter franchise’s closest thing to a protagonist and hero. Video gamers might be most familiar with Koji from playing the villainous Storm Shadow opposite Henry Golding in 2021’s Snake Eyes movie, but the British Koji has some real martial arts bonafides in his career after starring in Cinemax’s Warrior where Koji portrayed Ah Sahm, a character that was once the dream role of Bruce Lee. He also appeared as an assassin opposite Brad Pitt in Bullet Train.

In addition to Koji’s Japanese heritage, his casting as Ryu makes sense after Hollywood bizarrely sidelined the fan favorite character in previous adaptations. While the 1994 film is a kitschy camp classic in some circles, many still have frustration over Capcom choosing to make the main character all-American soldier Col. William Guile. Ryu was played in that Steven E. de Souza movie by Byron Mann, but also as something of a sidekick to not only Guile but also the other American character, Ken Masters.
And none of the above characters appeared at all in the other Hollywood Street Fighter movie, Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li. So this is a chance to put the Hollywood lens where it always belonged…

    Noah Centineo
Speaking of Ryu and Ken though, you cannot have one without the other. Usually depicted in the fighting games as BFFs, these respective Japanese and American playable characters act as doppelgängers with many of the same moves and power sets, including the beloved hadouken. So the young American Centineo, who is perhaps best known for appearing in Netflix’s To All the Boys I Love trilogy—as well as the Disney Channel’s Austin & Ally and as the superhero Atom Smasher in Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam—makes perfect sense as Ken.
More headstrong and arrogant than Ryu, Ken is a proper yankee foil to the stoic hero of the story, and the opportunity for a screenwriter to really play up some bromance dynamics.

    Jason Momoa
Now we come to what is obviously the biggest name casting in the film, and where speculation gets a little harder. Who is Jason Momoa, the once and future DC actor with both Aquaman and Lobo on his resume, going to play?
We don’t know for certain, but Jimmy Blanka seems like an obviously good guess. In the games, Blanka was a nominally human character until a plane crash in the Brazil rainforest somehowresulted in a mutation that turned Blanka’s skin lime green, his hair orange, and his teeth into fangs. Even his blood is now charged by the shock of lightning!

Look…. folks took video game storylines and lore a lot less seriouslyGame of Thrones or more recently Lobo. Granted, he also is now the family friendly face of another video game franchise for all ages via Minecraft, but we think Street Fighter will be a chance for him to return to his more familiar well with a new generation of budding action aficionados.

    Roman Reigns
Finally we come to the most difficult piece of casting to wrap our heads around: WWE wrestler and former footballer Roman Reigns. The Georgia Tech alumni has been cast in an undisclosed role which offers a lot of possibilities, and it’s worth noting that the first wave of casting has not included any obvious choice for one of the Street Fighter franchise’s biggest villains: M. Bison and Viktor Sagat.
Reigns could easily become a clean shaven Bison. But we suspect the American entertainer will be cast as the all-American Col. Guile instead. While it seems likely the new Street Fighter will seek to avoid the mistakes of the 1994 movie’s reputation, including by supplanting the Japanese Ryu with the American Guile, Guile is still a fan favorite. And again, once Reigns shaves the beard and trades in long locks for a platinum mane, he could certainly pass for a square-jawed hero. And who knows, maybe if the new Street Fighter follows the original games’ fighting tournament setup, the film might even begin with Guile taking a beating from Ken and Ryu? That would establish this no longer Jean-Claude Van Damme’s kind of action movie…
*Editor’s Note: While no casting is confirmed after press time Jeff Sneider has reported that Reigns is actually cast as Akuma, a hidden final boss from a later iteration of Street Fighter II. It would make sense to cast Reigns as a villain, however it is worth noting Akuma is Japanese in the video game.
The new Street Fighter movie does not currently have a release date.

  • Spotify says Premium subscriptions have already spiked thanks to App Store changes

Spotify was one of the first companies to take advantage of recent changes to the App Store Guidelines. The company swiftly submitted a new version of its app with links that make it easier for users to subscribe to Spotify Premium using external payment methods.
In an amicus brief filed in support of Epic Games this week, Spotify touts that it has already seen a measurable increase in Premium subscription conversions thanks to these changes.

    Spotify says:

“Apple claims that only it is harmed by the 2025 Order without any corresponding benefit to the public. This is wrong. By forcing Apple’s long-overdue compliance with the Injunction, the 2025 Order has created substantial benefits for developers and—more importantly—consumers. Spotify’s internal data show that its iOS app updates have already resulted in a significant increase in iOS users upgrading to a Premium subscription. Apple’s compliance has also enabled new product innovations that would not have been possible without the Injunction.”

The company adds that it is confident this increase is due to the changes to the iOS app:

“In the two weeks since Spotify updated its iOS app in accordance with the 2025 Order, the rate of conversions from the Free- to Premium-tier service has remained relatively constant on Android, while conversion among iOS users has increased substantially. This strongly suggests that the increase is due to Apple finally complying with the Injunction thanks to the 2025 Order.”

Apple was forced to change its App Store Guidelines after an injunction was handed down in its legal battle with Epic Games. Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers barred Apple from charging commission or otherwise interfering with developers’ ability to direct customers to payment methods outside of the App Store.
The latest version of the Spotify app for iOS shows pricing details and promotional information with a link that lets users subscribe via Safari. It’s also now easier to purchase audiobooks in the app.
Apple has requested a pause of the initial injunction. It is also formally appealing that decision.

As the artificial intelligence industry struggles with ever-rising costs — not to mention a steady uptick in hallucinations — investors are getting impatient. One investment firm went as far as seizing million from accounts owned by Builder.ai, a UK-based AI startup meant to make developing apps "as easy as ordering a pizza." That left the company with just million, according to Bloomberg, prompting its senior lenders to place it into default. With very little cash left to keep the ship afloat, CEO Manpreet Ratia closed the startup's doors and filed for bankruptcy.Builder.ai was previously one of the most well-funded tech startups in the game, with over million in backing from sources as big as tech giant Microsoft, Japanese investment firm SoftBank, and the Qatari government's sovereign wealth fund. That gave it a valuation worth over billion, drawing comparisons to Mark Zuckerberg's Meta.Ratia told the Financial Times the startup was "unable to recover from historic challenges and past decisions that placed significant strain on its financial position," adding that he had been running the business with "zero dollars" in its US and UK accounts. The CEO took over for Builder.ai's founder and "chief wizard" Sachin Dev Duggal in March, after the latter saddled the business with hundreds of millions worth of debt while burning through its dwindling cash fund, according to FT.Duggal was likewise embattled in a high-stakes legal probe by authorities in India, who named him a suspect in an alleged money laundering case. For his part, Duggal denied the accusations, saying he was simply a witness, though FT has also reported Duggal heavily relied on the services of an auditor with whom he has close personal ties. It's not known what, exactly, pushed the first domino. Viola Credit, the company that seized Builder.ai's coffers, has yet to give an explanation, though we can probably guess they saw the writing on the wall and simply hoped to pad their losses. It's a big moment for the AI industry, as the pressure grows for AI companies to actually come out with a usable — not to mention sustainable — product. Though AI companies accounted for 40 percent of the money raised by US startups last year, the vast majority of them have yet to turn a profit. Many AI startups struggle to find any consistent revenue stream at all beyond tech-crazed venture capitalists, and a not insignificant number have been caught misleading investors about their AI's capabilities to keep the cash flowing.Case in point, after Ratia took the helm back in March, Builder.ai lowered its revenue estimates for the last half of 2024 by 25 percent — a major blow for the much-hyped company. The startup was likewise caught trying to pass off human-built software as AI back in 2019.As auditors and journalists sift through the rubble to find out what went wrong, now makes as good a time as any to take a temperature check on unchecked AI hype.More on AI startups: Company Regrets Replacing All Those Pesky Human Workers With AI, Just Wants Its Humans BackShare This Article

  • Russian Hackers Exploit Email and VPN Vulnerabilities to Spy on Ukraine Aid Logistics

    May 21, 2025Ravie LakshmananCyber Espionage / Vulnerability

Russian cyber threat actors have been attributed to a state-sponsored campaign targeting Western logistics entities and technology companies since 2022.
The activity has been assessed to be orchestrated by APT28, which is linked to the Russian General Staff Main Intelligence Directorate85th Main Special Service Center, Military Unit 26165.
Targets of the campaign include companies involved in the coordination, transport, and delivery of foreign assistance to Ukraine, according to a joint advisory released by agencies from Australia, Canada, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
"This cyber espionage-oriented campaign targeting logistics entities and technology companies uses a mix of previously disclosed TTPs and is likely connected to these actors' wide scale targeting of IP cameras in Ukraine and bordering NATO nations," the bulletin said.
The alert comes weeks after France's foreign ministry accused APT28 of mounting cyber attacks on a dozen entities including ministries, defense firms, research entities, and think tanks since 2021 in an attempt to destabilize the nation.
Then last week, ESET took the wraps off a campaign dubbed Operation RoundPress that it said has been ongoing since 2023 by exploiting cross-site scriptingvulnerabilities in various webmail services like Roundcube, Horde, MDaemon, and Zimbra to single out governmental entities and defense companies in Eastern Europe, as well as governments in Africa, Europe, and South America.

According to the latest advisory, cyber attacks orchestrated by APT28 are said to have involved a combination of password spraying, spear-phishing, and modifying Microsoft Exchange mailbox permissions for espionage purposes.
The primary targets of the campaign include organizations within NATO member states and Ukraine spanning defense, transportation, maritime, air traffic management, and IT services verticals. No less than dozens of entities in Bulgaria, Czechia, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Moldova, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Ukraine, and the United States are estimated to have been targeted.
Initial access to targeted networks is said to have been facilitated by leveraging seven different methods -

    Brute-force attacks to guess credentials
Spear-phishing attacks to harvest credentials using fake login pages impersonating government agencies and Western cloud email providers that were hosted on free third-party services or compromised SOHO devices
    Spear-phishing attacks to deliver malware
Exploitation of Outlook NTLM vulnerabilityExploitation of Roundcube vulnerabilitiesExploitation of internet-facing infrastructure such as corporate VPNs using public vulnerabilities and SQL injection
Exploitation of WinRAR vulnerabilityOnce the Unit 26165 actors gain foothold using one of the above methods, the attacks proceed to the post-exploitation phase, which involves conducting reconnaissance to identify additional targets in key positions, individuals responsible for coordinating transport, and other companies cooperating with the victim entity.
The attackers have also been observed using tools like Impacket, PsExec, and Remote Desktop Protocolfor lateral movement, as well as Certipy and ADExplorer.exe to exfiltrate information from the Active Directory.
"The actors would take steps to locate and exfiltrate lists of Office 365 users and set up sustained email collection," the agencies pointed out. "The actors used manipulation of mailbox permissions to establish sustained email collection at compromised logistics entities."
Another notable trait of the intrusions is the use of malware families like HeadLace and MASEPIE, to establish persistence on compromised hosts and harvest sensitive information. There is no evidence that malware variants like OCEANMAP and STEELHOOK have been used to directly target logistics or IT sectors.

During data exfiltration, the threat actors have relied on different methods based on the victim environment, often utilizing PowerShell commands to create ZIP archives to upload the collected data to their own infrastructure, or employing Exchange Web Servicesand Internet Message Access Protocolto siphon information from email servers.
"As Russian military forces failed to meet their military objectives and Western countries provided aid to support Ukraine's territorial defense, Unit 26165 expanded its targeting of logistics entities and technology companies involved in the delivery of aid," the agencies said. "These actors have also targeted internet-connected cameras at Ukrainian border crossings to monitor and track aid shipments."
The disclosure comes as Cato Networks revealed that suspected Russian threat actors are leveraging Tigris Object Storage, Oracle Cloud InfrastructureObject Storage, and Scaleway Object Storage to host fake reCAPTCHA pages that make use of ClickFix-style lures to trick users into downloading Lumma Stealer.
"The recent campaign leveraging Tigris Object Storage, OCI Object Storage, and Scaleway Object Storage builds upon earlier methods, introducing new delivery mechanisms aimed at evading detection and targeting technically proficient users," researchers Guile Domingo, Guy Waizel, and Tomer Agayev said.
