• In This 860-Square-Foot NYC Loft, Patina and History Give Way for New Life

Though many of the old artists’ residences have been gobbled up by new high-rises, pockets of nostalgia persist on the streets of New York’s NoHo neighborhood. Nine years ago, New Operations Workshop founder Gabriel Yuri was fortunate enough to find one when his real estate broker showed him a partially renovated 860-square-foot studio apartment in a 19th-century building that had been, at different times, a furrier, an artist refuge, and a home for women. Even in its haphazard state—with new walls plastered over some of the 1830s brickwork and half-finished hardwood flooring—the Diller Scofidio + Renfro alum could see the potential.Gabriel Yuri sits at a Tom Dixon screw table in the dining area, where custom shelving, a George Nelson pendant, and his grandmother’s Jens Risom chairs play off one another in their round and linear forms.
“Most of what I was finding had been renovated to remove the charm,” Yuri remembers of the boring box apartments that had dominated the listings. “I wanted something that had history and character, so it was great that I got to this one while it still had some of that intact.”Many might have been daunted by the workload, but Yuri welcomed the challenge. He spent nearly four years peeling back the renovations—often himself, sometimes with the help of a handyman—restoring the original pine floors in the living room and revealing more of the existing brick, exposed pipework, and steel beams that had been covered up throughout the space. And his lucky streak continued: When new neighbors discarded the original tin ceiling tile during their own renovation, Yuri installed them in his kitchen and entry hallway—a sweet nod to the building’s past that complements the new industrial-style steel kitchen cabinetry. He also found original transom windows, which he used above the bedroom door to allow light to penetrate deeper into the apartment, and crafted a banquette sectional sofa and daybed in the living room to hide structural adjustments from the building’s façade work.A plaster of Paris bust of Yuri’s grandmother sits atop an old I-beam side table in the entry hallway, signaling the apartment’s industrial-chic aesthetic. The Tutsi milk jug was bought at auction.
“I wanted to embrace the industrial aesthetic but also elevate it by blending it with a collection of things with balance and harmony,” says Yuri. In the living room, that meant pairing a vintage Hans Wegner lounge chair inherited from his grandmother with a sculptural Hinterlands cocktail table.
But while the building itself served as an architectural muse, Yuri found inspiration in yet another beacon from a bygone era: his grandmother, who passed away just before he purchased the loft. “She wasn’t a designer but had the most incredible design sensibility,” he says. He repurposed her collection of midcentury furnishings—including the Jens Risom chairs in the dining room and the Hans Wegner lounge chair in the living room—as well as artwork and artifacts from her home in Queens. In the bedroom, he incorporated her stained glass pocket doors as a room divider and created a wood-and-cement-block bookcase inspired by the ones she often crafted herself. “The whole time I was keeping an eye out for what could fit in,” he says, noting the pops of red that were herfavorite color. “It felt good to keep these things that I had grown up with and give them a new life.”Blended with contemporary additions, like the Tom Dixon table in the dining room and the live-edge platform bed in the bedroom, midcentury lighting that bridges the modern and industrial aesthetics at play, plus pieces picked up on his travels, the eclectic mix imparts layers of soul that give Yuri’s home a cocooning feeling of warmth and personal history.“The biggest response I get is how calm it feels,” he says. “I’m a homebody. I like to read and listen to albums and usually work from home. It’s nice to be surrounded by so many references to the past in such a busy, constantly changing city.”Above the custom Maharam-upholstered banquette sofa, Yuri has arranged an assortment of artwork on a steel shelf, including works by Paul Sepuya, Sarah Oppenheimer, and his mother, as well as a self-made piece that was once on display in the lobby of the Guggenheim. The table lamp is by In Common With, and the wood-and-steel magazine rack is of his own design.
A memento from his time working at the iconic Starrett-Lehigh building, the hanging window acts as a divider between the living and dining areas. The transom windows that appear in the newly erected bedroom wall, which was started before Yuri purchased the apartment but redone in a much slimmer configuration, were found on site, and Yuri installed a herringbone floor over the previous owner’s renovations.
Steel cabinetry and stained butcher block countertops from IKEA give the kitchen a sleek update. A seagrass CB2 rug, an Alvar Alto stool, and a city-themed drying rack by Seletti, as well as a collection of his grandmother’s vintage Hasami pottery and a conical tea kettle by Aldo Rossi for Alessi, infuse the space with warmth and personality.
A custom oak platform bed adds earthy elegance in the bedroom, a space made cozier with custom felted wool drapery, cotton cashmere sheets by RH, and a throw blanket by El Rey for Nordic Knots. A pair of Yuri’s grandmother’s Arthur Umanoff side chairs create a sense of symmetry, as do the antique glass naval sconces and reclaimed pine flooring.
Inspired by the simple bookshelves his grandmother made in her Queens, New York, home, Yuri crafted this efficient cinderblock and wood organizational system in the bedroom.
Yuri painted the existing clawfoot tub in Farrow & Ball’s Off Black to coordinate with the new RH vanity and slate tile flooring for a moody effect against the existing brick walls.

  • Signal Slams Microsoft’s Recall, Disables Screenshots on Windows 11

Worried that Microsoft Recall might take screenshots of your Signal chats? Don’t be. Signal has introduced a new “Screen security” setting for its Windows 11 app that will give users a black screen every time you or the system attempts to take a screenshot. You might be familiar with the outcome if you have attempted screenshotting shows or movies on Netflix. The feature arrives just a month after Microsoft officially rolled out its controversial Recall feature, which takes screenshots at regular intervals to create a history of everything you have seen or done on your PC. Though announced in May last year, the launch was delayed due to privacy concerns.Explaining the reason behind the feature, Signal said that “although Microsoft made several adjustments over the past twelve months in response to critical feedback, the revamped version of Recall still places any content that’s displayed within privacy-preserving apps like Signal at risk.”Recommended by Our EditorsAdditionally, the press release notes that Microsoft has yet to provide an API for the feature that would allow app developers to opt out of it.“We hope that the AI teams building systems like Recall will think through these implications more carefully in the future,” Signal says. “Apps like Signal shouldn’t have to implement “one weird trick” in order to maintain the privacy and integrity of their services without proper developer tools.”Screen security for Signal is now rolling out to Windows 11 PCs. Users who aren’t worried about Recall or are willing to let it store screenshots of their Signal activity can disable the new feature by going to Signal Settings > Privacy > Screen security.

  • Embracer Group Renames Its Lord Of The Rings-Themed Gaming Division

Image: Daedalic EntertainmentEmbracer Group has seemingly been scrambling to right the ship after a turbulent few years, and its latest announcement reveals yet another significant move for the company.
As reported by Game Developer, Embracer posted an investor statement to confirm that it is renaming its core gaming division from the working-title 'Middle Earth & Friends' to 'Fellowship Entertainment'. In addition, it's also looking to spin off the Coffee Stain Group into a "standalone group of community-driven game developers and publishers".
The company notes that Fellowship Entertainment will have a total of approximately "6,000 employees across more than 30 countries". Here's a look at what it will be working on along with the teams it will encompass:

"The group will be steward of the commercial rights to J.R.R. Tolkien’s work The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, as well as intellectual properties Kingdom Come Deliverance, Metro, Dead Island, Killing Floor, Darksiders, Remnant and Tomb Raider, amongst more than 300 other gaming IPs.
"Fellowship Entertainment will consist of companies such as 4A Games, Aspyr Media, CrazyLabs, Crystal Dynamics, Dambuster Studios, Dark Horse, Deca Games, Eidos-Montréal, Flying Wild Hog, Gunfire Games, Limited Run Games, Middle-earth Enterprises, Milestone, PLAION, Tarsier Studios, THQ Nordic, Tripwire Interactive, Vertigo Games, and Warhorse Studios amongst more than 40 other companies."

Meanwhile, Coffee Stain Group will consist of "more than 250 passionate game developers and publishers".
We thought it might be fun to come up with our own alternatives to Fellowship Entertainment, so if you have any ideas yourself, be sure to let us know with a comment:

  • A BOGO deal on Samsung gaming monitors? Heck yeah! Get it while you can

Samsung wants you to have a lot of fun this weekend. Memorial Day means lots and lots of sales—but here’s one that you won’t forget any time soon. Right now, Samsung has slashed hundreds off its 49-inch Odyssey G9 monitors and you’ll get an extra 27-inch Odyssey G5 for free if you buy one. That’s an incredible deal, if you ask me.
The Samsung Odyssey OLED G95SD is one of those massive ultrawide 49-inchers, complete with a 5120×1440 resolution, 240Hz refresh rate, and 0.03ms response time. The OLED panel elevates it to next-level greatness for ultra-vivid colors and deep blacks. Normally available for right now you can get it for.
If that one’s too expensive but you still want an enormous 49-inch OLED ultrawide with 5120×1440 resolution, then jump on the Samsung Odyssey OLED G91SD. This one has a slower-but-still-fast 144Hz refresh rate, and it has the same 0.03ms response time. It’s normally available for but you can get it now for.
And then there’s the Samsung Odyssey G95C, another huge 49-inch curved ultrawide monitor with that same luxurious 5120×1440 resolution along with a 240Hz refresh rate and 1ms response time. This one’s notably cheaper because it doesn’t have an OLED panel. Normally available for right now you can get this super-large display with a gigantic discount for just.
Buy any of the above on-sale 49-inch Odyssey G9 gaming monitors and Samsung will throw in a 27-inch Odyssey G55C for free. This one has a more standard size but an excellent resolution of 2560×1440, a refresh rate of 165Hz, and a response time of 1ms. It’s a value, which is pretty insane to give away in BOGO style like this.

If you’ve been looking to upgrade your home PC setup, this is an incredible opportunity. With an ultrawide 49-incher and a 27-inch supplementary display, you’ll have the battlestation of your dreams for a crazy price. Don’t miss this chance!

Windows 11 Recall will fail to capture Signal chats as long as you have this feature enabled

Signal has come out against Windows 11's Recall feature by actively working to prevent the AI tool from screenshotting Signal Desktop conversations. The secure messaging service has announced a new "Screen security" setting for its Windows 11 desktop application, enabled by default, specifically to shield user chats from Recall's pervasive monitoring.
Windows Recall wascontroversial when it was first announced back in May 2024. Following an immediate and intense backlash from security experts and the public over privacy implications, Microsoft delayed its June 2024 launch, sending the feature back for revisions which included making it opt-in and requiring Windows Hello. Recall eventually began testing with Windows Insiders in November 2024 and started a gradual public rollout to Copilot+ PCs in April 2025.
Despite these changes, Signal believes the feature remains a threat, stating:

Although Microsoft made several adjustments over the past twelve months in response to critical feedback, the revamped version of Recall still places any content that’s displayed within privacy-preserving apps like Signal at risk. As a result, we are enabling an extra layer of protection by default on Windows 11 in order to help maintain the security of Signal Desktop on that platform even though it introduces some usability trade-offs. Microsoft has simply given us no other option.

To achieve this protection, Signal Desktop is now utilizing a Digital Rights Managementflag on its application window. Signal explained the technical approach, referencing Microsoft's own documentation:

According to Microsoft’s official developer documentation, setting the correct Digital Rights Managementflag on the application window will ensure that 'content won’t show up in Recall or any other screenshot application.' So that’s exactly what Signal Desktop is now doing on Windows 11 by default.

This method effectively makes Signal chats appear as a black screen to Recall, and indeed, to any screenshot attempt, including manual ones by the user. While acknowledging this could be frustrating and might affect some accessibility tools, Signal provides an option to disable "Screen security," albeit with a warning.
Signal's team criticized Microsoft for not providing better tools for developers, saying, "Microsoft has launched Recall without granular settings for app developers that would enable Signal to easily protect privacy, which is a glaring omission that limits our choices." Signal further remarked that, "Apps like Signal shouldn’t have to implement 'one weird trick' in order to maintain the privacy and integrity of their services without proper developer tools."

    Business Report: Stratasys
Stratasys recently announced its financial results for the fourth quarter of 2024and full year 2024.  For FY 2024, Stratasys reported revenue of million, an 8.8% decrease from million in FY 2023. Q4 2024 revenue reached million, down 3.8% from the same period in 2023 but up 7.4% sequentially from Q3.
Despite the impact of macroeconomic challenges and constrained capital spending, Stratasys maintained strong customer engagement and saw a rise in manufacturing applications, which accounted for 36% of total revenue—up from 34% in 2023.
Stratasys’ focus on high-value applications, particularly in the industrial and healthcare sectors, provided resilience during a challenging year. A key highlight was its expanding role in manufacturing, notably with ArcelorMittal, one of the world’s largest steel manufacturers, adopted Stratasys’ FDM technology and GrabCAD software at its European Research Center, enabling faster tooling production.
In motorsports, Stratasys became the official 3D printing partner of NASCAR through a multi-year agreement, for the design and production of parts and tools across its operations, fully replacing previous systems used alongside Stratasys solutions.

Sen. Ron Wydenrevealed in a new letter to Senate colleagues Wednesday that AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile failed to create systems for notifying senators about government surveillance on Senate-issued devices -- despite a requirement to do so. From a report: Phone service providers are contractually obligated to inform senators when a law enforcement agency requests their records, thanks to protections enacted in 2020. But in an investigation, Wyden's staff found that none of the three major carriers had created a system to send those notifications.

"My staff discovered that, alarmingly, these crucial notifications were not happening, likely in violation of the carriers' contracts with the, leaving the Senate vulnerable to surveillance," Wyden said in the letter, obtained first by POLITICO, dated May 21. Wyden said that the companies all started providing notification after his office's investigation. But one carrier told Wyden's office it had previously turned over Senate data to law enforcement without notifying lawmakers, according to the letter.
