• Exhibitionists Part 2: David Kohn Architects, West Port
    www.architectsjournal.co.uk
Exhibition design, both for temporary touring shows and more permanent gallery fit-outs, has long been an important part of architectural practice. It is seen as a chance to experiment in space-making, fabrication and materials as well as to collaborate creatively with fabricators and lighting designers. It often provides a platform for younger practices to quite literally showcase their design work. But increasingly, too, given the temporary and traditionally wasteful nature of exhibition fit-outs and installations, its also a fertile ground for experimentation in sustainable, reusable and low-carbon builds and materials. The AJ approached prominent practitioners for insights into exhibition and gallery design.David Kohn, founding director, David Kohn ArchitectsDescribe a key recent projectOur programme reinvigorated Modern Art Oxford as a welcoming, inclusive and accessible venue. It is now better equipped with space and flexible structures for exhibitions, learning and participation work. With much of the historic fabric remaining intact, we revealed features such as cast iron columns, which recall the buildings industrial past while giving rhythm to the spaces. Source:Max CreasyModern Art Oxford, reworked by David Kohn Architects with artist Emma HartHow do you look to ensure sustainability in designing exhibitions/gallery fit-outs?We have advocated both the reuse of materials and the design of adaptable systems. One example is the reusable lightweight carbon-fibre display system we designed for the Design Museum in 2011, which we reused as recently as 2019 at a Bauhaus exhibition at the Aram Store.AdvertisementWho are the key collaborators and consultants you work with regularly? We often work with Weber Industries on the joinery, such as that at Modern Art Oxfords new community gallery, education space and shop. They are brilliantly collaborative. We also work with artists such as Eva Rothschild and Monster Chetwynd on gates and gargoyles at New College, Oxford. Source:Max CreasyModern Art Oxford, reworked by David Kohn Architects with artist Emma HartWhat other art/cultural projects are you working on or looking forward to?Last year we won an international design competition with noAarchitecten and Asl icek for the 95 million expansion of the S.M.A.K. museum of contemporary art in Ghent, Belgium. While the brief expected demolition of the existing building, our winning proposal proved the structure could be retained and insulated, with its brick and stone faades being mined like a quarry to create a new appearance. We are currently also working with artist David Shrigley on a new studio complex in Brighton. Following an early collaboration with artist Fiona Banner on A Room for London, we are in discussion to create A Room for Fremantle together for the 2027 Perth Festival in Australia. How does exhibition or gallery work feed into your wider practice? The practice is incredibly fortunate to work with very talented artists. Recently in conversation Fiona Banner spoke of an idea from German composer Karlheinz Stockhausen, that it takes a lot of spiritual work to remain young. Speaking to Fiona and other artists has a similar effect.Project dataProject Redevelopment programmeLocation Modern Art OxfordClient Modern Art OxfordStart on site June 2024CompletionOctober 2024Budget 2 millionShaun Ihejetoh, director and co-founder, West PortDescribe a key recent projectFor Our Street at the Barbican, we were asked to recreate a London street that facilitates play, whether ball, group or solo games. The show created a space that encouraged people to touch, feel and explore, with a mixture of prompts and activities. As lead designers, we worked closely with St Lukes Primary School in Islington, co-designing the space together, along with invited artists and illustrators. Key to the project was designing through the eyes of children, which included everything from the heights of shopfronts to the mix of colours and tactility of surfaces.Advertisement Source: Jesse Olu OgunbanjoOur Street pop-up play space at the Barbican, designed by West PortHow do you look to ensure sustainability in designing exhibitions/gallery fit-outs?Exhibition design can be very wasteful, so we have a list of sustainability targets at the outset of every project: reusing existing materials where possible, using standardised sheets to reduce wastage, working with suppliers to explore more sustainable products such as the carbon-neutral fibreboard made from 100 per cent cellulose waste and fibre residue, a by-product of the paper industry, that we used on a previous exhibition, Real Families at the Fitzwilliam Museum.Who are the key collaborators and consultants you work with regularly? We have often worked with London-based graphic designers ChillCreate and lighting designers Beam, ControLuce and Lucy Record. Weve also worked with amazing contractors over the years, such as Sam Forster and The Moule Partnership, amongst others, who, to tight timescales, have delivered excellent builds. At the moment, we are working with the Royal Academy on their autumn show, the largest British survey of the work of renowned American painter Kerry James Marshall. How does exhibition or gallery work feed into your wider practice? It has made us more collaborative and, crucially, better facilitators of the project programme: working to tight completion dates that cannot be moved and instilling a mindset of efficient working practices. • 50% of all Steam users in February were Chinese-speaking

50% of all Steam users in February were Chinese-speakingTrend could continue.Image credit: Amazing Seasun Games News by Ed Nightingale Deputy News Editor Published on March 7, 2025 Chinese-speaking users accounted for 50 percent of Steam's playerbase last month.Valve has released its latest Steam Hardware and Software Survey, which revealed a 20.88 percent increase in Simplified Chinese-speaking users in February 2025, making up half of the entire userbase. As Automaton noted, February usually brings an increase of Chinese users to Steam as it coincides with Chinese New Year holidays. However, this year's increase was significantly higher than usual - 2024 saw an equivalent increase of 7.26 percent.Mecha BREAK - Global Storm Open Beta TrailerWatch on YouTubeEnglish-speaking users are the next highest, accounting for an almost 24 percent proportion of the userbase. Similarly, the Christmas season usually results in a spike in proportion. The success of Game Science's Black Myth: Wukong is likely a contributing factor to this increase in Chinese users. While its player numbers have dwindled since launch, it remains a huge success story and has the second highest all-time concurrent player count on the platform.Another factor could be the demo for Mecha Break, a multiplayer mech shooter from Chinese developer Amazing Seasun Games that dominated Steam Next Fest - it reached a peak player count of over 300,000.Other contributing factors could be the ongoing success of NetEase's Marvel Rivals that saw its new season launch in this period, as well as the release of Monster Hunter Wilds at the very end of the month that saw Steam reach its highest ever concurrent player count. What's more, this upward trend in Chinese-speaking users is likely to continue. If Mecha Break's demo is anything to go by, its full release later this year will be huge. Then there's the likes of the PlayStation-published Chinese action game Lost Soul Aside, as well as another Chinese action game Wuchang: Fallen Feathers (not to be confused with Wukong), while the free-to-play FragPunk follows Marvel Rivals as NetEase's next big shooter. It's clear that Chinese studios are thriving, and that's resulting in a surge of Steam users in the country.Yet political relations between China and the US are causing friction in the industry. NetEase laid off a number of Marvel Rivals developers from its US team despite the game's success. Reportedly, further downsizing is yet to come, though NetEase has denied such allegations. At the start of the year, Chinese conglomerate Tencent was labelled a military company by the US - the company threatened legal proceedings in response.

Rest assured, all imagery and advice is unique and original. Check out how we test and review games hereDiablo 4 is the most live-service ARPG Blizzard has ever made, adapting a number of modern mechanics to keep players invested in order to sell microtransactions. Alongside timed seasons with their own unique mechanics, Blizzard has made use of the now-standard Battle Pass system to engage players. However, it seems that the Diablo studio is planning to abandon its current Battle Pass system for something more modern as the game continues to evolve.Diablo 4 will remove battle passesSpeaking to Game File (paywalled), head of Diablo Rod Fergusson explained that the current form of the Battle Pass in Diablo 4 is an antiquated system. Instead, the Blizzard executive wants to move towards a more freeform system where players decide what to unlock seen in games like Call of Duty.We do think battle passes are probably an antiquated system now, the series lead explained. There are different ways to gamify and to give the players more agency. So I think what I would say is, watch this space for us. I think were going to be introducing some interesting things.Alongside the newly revamped mechanic, Fergusson also wants to introduce more flamboyant cosmetic items to Diablo 4 in new updates. Inspired by the recent World of Warcraft cosmetics collaboration, Fergusson reveals the team at Blizzard discusses new collabs all the time.Considering the massive number of collaborations in other Activision-Blizzard properties, it seems extremely likely that we could see more IP come to the new Diablo game. • Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3 + 4 is scrapping a beloved career mode for time-based challenges, which kind of stinks if we're being honest with ourselves
    www.vg247.com
Out of timeTony Hawk Pro Skater 3 + 4 is scrapping a beloved career mode for time-based challenges, which kind of stinks if we're being honest with ourselvesLess of a true remake, more of a kinda maybe sorta mostly remake I suppose.Image credit: Activision News by Connor Makar Staff Writer Published on March 7, 2025 With some good news in life, there's a tinge of bad. This appears to be the case with the recently revealed Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3+4 remake, which according to Kotaku's reporting, will be lacking the kind of career mode that made Pro Skater 4 special in the hearts of many series fans. This career mode instead will instead be made up of 2-minute timed challenges, with an additional exploration mode added for those who want to just skate around on their own time. It's worth noting that the PS1 version of the original Pro Skater 4 did also have this format, so this isn't entirely out of the blue, however the career mode present in other versions of the game was a massive addition to the franchise, acting as a key precursor to the career modes in games a such as the Tony Hawk Underground and American Wasteland games. To see this content please enable targeting cookies. The response to this news on community hubs like the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater Reddit has been somewhat dire. It raises a question we've been seeing more and more over the past few years given the rise in big budget video game remakes: how true to the original version does a remake have to be to make folks happy? One could argue that the 3+4 remake is legit because, well, it's bringing the maps, gameplay, characters, onto modern platforms with a new coat of paint. But, if you're like me, the lack of this version of the career mode will leave a disappointing feeling swimming around your brain. People fell in love with the series for loads of different reasons. Many loved the core gameplay experience, they loved skating. Others would have fond memories of the career mode too, and while a free-skate mode will replicate the exploration and open skating experience, it's not exactly what folks looking for the experience they remember would be looking for.But hey, Iron Galaxy is a damn good developer, and with it behind the wheel I'm sure that the game will still feel good to play and all that. It's just kind of a bummer. Like getting the car you always wanted but in the wrong colour. Still, let us know if you're torn on this news down below.

  • Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 Has Been Butchered For The Switch Remake
    www.nintendolife.com
Image: ActivisionOur sheer elation when Activision announced Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 + 4 for Switch has sadly bailed in light of news that the fourth entry will be subject to some pretty seismic changes. In short, as confirmed by Kotaku (thanks, Push Square), Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 won't offer the original Career Mode, meaning you can no longer roam freely and take on challenges at your own pace. Instead, challenges will work in the same way as the previous three titles, giving you a 2-minute time limit in which to complete as many as possible.Subscribe to Nintendo Life on YouTube798kWatch on YouTube As we understand it, a Free Roam mode will still be available, meaning you can explore the levels for as long as you like, but challenges won't be offered in conjunction. So effectively, developer Iron Galaxy has "streamlined" the experience to form a more cohesive package, making the leap from THPS 3 to THPS 4 a more seamless transition. We don't like it, though. Granted, the first three Tony Hawk's games are fantastic and we've no doubt that the fourth entry will still be worth playing with the proposed changes, but for goodness' sake, the levels in that game were built with free roaming in mind. It just won't feel the same. We'll reserve our full judgement until we play the game for review come July, but this is a devastating blow to fans of the original. We can only hope that Iron Galaxy and Activision will listen to fans and add a proper Career Mode via downloadable content later down the line.Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 + 4 will launch on Nintendo Switch on 11th July 2025. • FBI says scammers are targeting US executives with fake BianLian ransom notes
    techcrunch.com
In BriefPosted:2:12 AM PST March 7, 2025FBI says scammers are targeting US executives with fake BianLian ransom notesThe FBI is warning that scammers are impersonating the BianLian ransomware gang using fake ransom notes sent to U.S. corporate executives. The fake ransom notes, first reported by U.S. cybersecurity company GuidePoint Security, claim that hackers have gained access to an organizations network to steal sensitive data, and threaten to publish the stolen data unless a ransom demand is paid. The scammers are demanding between $250,000 and $500,000, according to the FBI, which says the letter includes a QR code linked to a Bitcoin wallet. The notes have a return address to an office building in Boston, Massachusetts, and claim to be from the BianLian ransomware gang. The Russia-linked BianLian gang was the subject of a CISA alert in November last year, which warned that the group had targeted multiple U.S. critical infrastructure sectors since June 2022. Its not known how many individuals have been targeted by this scam, and the FBI hasnt named any known victims. Cybersecurity firm Arctic Wolf reports that the letters have primarily been sent to executives in the U.S. healthcare sector. The FBI says it has not identified any connections between the individuals sending the ransom notes and BianLian.Topics

  • New study explores Xolography for bioprinting of hydrogels in tissue engineering
    3dprintingindustry.com
Researchers from Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) have introduced a novel way to fabricate hydrogels using Xolography technology from Berlin-based 3D printer manufacturer xolo.Led by Lena Stoecker and Miguel Dias Castilho, their study showcases how this technique allows for precise control over the structure and mechanical properties of hydrogels, a material widely used in tissue engineering.Tissue engineering depends on extracellular environments that support and guide cellular activity through biochemical, mechanical, and structural cues. However, existing fabrication technologies failed to meet the high expectations, providing the necessary spatial precision. Published in Advanced Materials, this study presents Xolography as a method that can print centimeter-scale hydrogel structures within minutes, while offering fine control over their shape and stiffness at a microscopic level. My dream for Xolography would be to develop into a technology that is actually able to create tissue and organ models to study disease and develop cures, explains Stoecker.Lena Stoecker and Miguel Dias Castilho pose in front of the tissue 3D printer in the lab. Photo via Bart van Overbeeke.Grayscale light projection enables tunable hydrogel propertiesTo advance hydrogel design, the researchers developed a water-soluble photoinitiator system and tested a range of naturally derived, synthetic, and thermoresponsive hydrogels.Their method successfully created structures with positive features as small as 20 m and negative features around 100 m. Having shifted from binary to grayscale light projection, they achieved precise spatial modulation of stiffness, with compressive moduli ranging from 0.2 to 16 kilopascals (kPa), without altering the base material composition.Xolographys ability to control mechanical properties stems from its capacity to adjust the degree of crosslinking (DoC) during printing. The technology used in this study was provided by the Berlin-based manufacturer, whose Xube 3D printer was instrumental in enabling the dual-color volumetric printing process.By varying light intensity in a grayscale projection system, the researchers demonstrated localized stiffness control at a microscale resolution. This level of customization opens up possibilities for tailoring biomaterial scaffolds to specific tissue types, with potential applications in regenerative medicine. The study also delved into the use of thermoresponsive hydrogels, which exhibit shape-shifting behavior in response to temperature changes. Leveraging Xolographys grayscale projection, the researchers fabricated hydrogels capable of reversible shape transformations, demonstrating a new approach to dynamic biomaterials. This technique presents new possibilities for applications in tissue engineering and soft robotics, where controlled shape changes could prove invaluable. One of the promising aspects of this research was the successful integration of cell-laden printing. The team incorporated viable cell aggregates into hydrogel constructs, demonstrating that Xolography is compatible with bioprinting. These 3D printed cells maintained metabolic activity and exhibited distinct behaviors depending on their position within the hydrogel. However, the study also acknowledged that further optimization of hydrogel formulations is necessary to enhance cell viability and post-printing biological functions. Moreover, the implications extend across tissue engineering, regenerative medicine, and in vitro modeling. Looking ahead, the research team aims to refine hydrogel formulations, improve biocompatibility, and explore the scalability of this technique for larger biological constructs. Our research is a necessary first step for the future of tissue engineering. Right now, it can print physiologically more relevant 3D environments for cell culture, and in the long term, it could help make 3D printed organs a reality, says Dias Castilho. The new Xube. Image via Xolo.Volumetric 3D printing for medical applicationsBeyond the Eindhoven research, previous developments in volumetric bioprinting further demonstrate its potential for functional tissue fabrication. For instance, Utrecht University researchers fabricated functional liver tissue using an ultrafast volumetric bioprinting technique. Having employed visible light tomography, the method made cells transparent with the help of iodixanol, allowing high-resolution printing of miniature liver organoids while preserving their biological functions. In under 20 seconds, they 3D printed functional liver units capable of detoxifying harmful compounds, mimicking the livers natural processes. The team also designed porous architectures to facilitate nutrient flow, replicating the role of blood vessels. In 2023, researchers at UMC Utrecht advanced volumetric bioprinting by achieving three key developments: creating biologically functional regions within 3D printed cells, improving cell survival using granular gels, and combining volumetric bioprinting with melt electrowriting to reinforce 3D printed blood vessels. As per the team, these efforts were aimed at increasing the clinical applicability of bioprinting by enabling precise control over cellular interactions and tissue formation. Their work could support the development of bioengineered scaffolds that guide cell growth and contribute to the fabrication of complex organ structures for medical use.What3D printing trendsshould you watch out for in 2025?How is thefuture of 3D printingshaping up?To stay up to date with the latest 3D printing news, dont forget to subscribe to the 3D Printing Industry newsletter or follow us on Twitter, or like our page on Facebook. While youre here, why not subscribe to our Youtube channel?
