  • Meta raises the bar for Apple’s AI glasses ambitions

Today, Meta shareda few new details about Aria Gen 2, its next-generation experimental smart glasses.
While they’re still not meant for consumers, the hardware show just how fast Meta is moving and how far ahead it is thinking when it comes to the future of wearables, AI, and spatial computing. It also signals how quickly Apple will have to work if it really intends to do more than simply try to catch up. Again.

    Aria Gen 2
Designed as a research platform for augmented reality, AI, and robotics, Aria Gen 2 packs a full eye-tracking system that monitors “gaze per eye, vergence point, blink detection, pupil center estimation, pupil diameter, corneal center, etc.”

It also features multiple computer vision cameras that enable 3D hand and object tracking, which Meta says is precise enough to train robotic hands. Interestingly, Apple has just published a study on this subject.
Inside the nosepad, there’s a PPG heart rate sensorand a contact microphone that improves audio capture in loud environments. And unlike the Aria Gen 1, the frame folds.
It is also lighter than before, and available in eight sizes “accounting for a number of human factors including head breadth and nose bridge variation.”
    Other hardware includes:

    12 MP RGB camera
    7 spatial microphones
    Ambient light sensor
    Accelerometer and gyroscope
    Stereo speakers
    USB-C port

Meta calls Aria Gen 2 a “testbed,” and it sure looks more like a pair of computer glasses, rather than just… glasses. But it’s hard to look at this device and not foresee people wearing something like this in real life sooner rather than later.
    Open vs. private prototyping
As Meta iterates in public, Apple is reportedly aiming to enter this space by the end of next year. Per Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman, Tim Cook is “hell-bent on creating an industry-leading product before Meta can.”
Whether Apple will actually succeed in leapfrogging Meta and launch an industry-leading product remains to be seen. But much like with AI, Apple’s biggest challenge will be to move fast enough not to let cutting-edge tech become obsolete beforeit finally hits the market.

  • Augmented World Expo 2025 will draw 400 speakers, 6K attendees and 300 global exhibitors

Augmented World Expo 2025 will draw more than 6,000 attendees, 400 speakers and 300 global exhibitors to its event June 10 to June 12 in Long Beach, California.
The speaker lineup includes Snap CEO Evan Spiegel, Atari cofounder Nolan Bushnell and Oculus/Anduril founder Palmer Luckey. If the show is any indication, the XR industry isn’t doing so bad. A variety of market researchers are forecasting fast growth for the industry through 2030. Ori Inbar, CEO of AWE, believes that the XR revolution is “ready to conquer the mainstream.” But to get there, he believes the industry still needs to create “head-turning content that must be experienced.”
Of course, the red hot days of the “metaverse,” inspired by Neal Stephenson’s Snow Crash sci-fi novel in 1992, is no longer driving the industry forward. With less focus on sci-fi, the industry is focused on practical uses for mixed reality technology in the enterprise and consumer markets like gaming.
But will XR and the metaverse be overrun by AI, or will it carry them to the mass market destination?
Much is riding on how committed Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta will be even as it reprioritizes some resources away from XR to AI. Meta, which acquired Luckey’s Oculus back in 2014, has invested billions every quarter in the technology, with no profits so far. But, in a very unexpected turnaround, Zuckerberg and Luckey buried the hatchet on the past differences and set up an alliance between Meta and Anduril — the latter being Luckey’s AI/drone defense company.
Zuckerberg has new competition from his own nemesis, Apple, which launched the Apple Vision Pro in February 2024. However, Apple has slowed down its development of the next-generation XR headset, while Zuckerberg has put more emphasis on AR/AI glasses.
Spiegel, the CEO of Snap, has focused on augmented reality glasses. His Spectacles are now in their fifth generation, powered by the Snap OS and authoring tool Lens Studio.
Nolan Bushnell, founder of Atari and Chuck E. Cheese, will deliver a one-of-a-kind talk on the main stage with five of his children, who are continuing his pioneering vision in gaming through XR. Brent Bushnell, Nolan’s eldest son, recently debuted DreamPark, a new XR startup that turns any park or playground into a mixed reality theme parks.
Others speakers include Vicki Dobbs Beck – VP, Immersive Content Innovation, Lucasfilm & ILM Immersive; Ziad Asghar – SVP & GM XR, Qualcomm; Brian McClendon – Chief Technology Officer, Niantic Spatial, Inc.; Jason Rubin – VP, Metaverse Experiences, Meta; Hugo Swart, Senior Director of XR Ecosystem Strategy and Technology, Google; Jacqui Bransky – VP Web3 & Innovation, Warner Records; Chi Xu – CEO and Founder, XREAL; Helen Papagiannis – AR Pioneer and XR Hall of Famer; and Tom Furness – Grandfather of VR and Founder, Virtual World Society.
AWE Builders Nexus will be a new program focused on startups this year. Startup founders, developers, designers, product managers, and business leaders alike will get the resources they need to build something extraordinary, get advice and funding, scale through partnerships, and win customers, Inbar said. The event will also feature the AWE Gaming Hub.
I also interviewed some companies that are showcasing technology at the show. Here’s some snippets from what they are going to show.
    Pico VR
Pico started out in Beijing, China, in 2015 and is now hitting its 10th anniversary. It is making the standalone Pico XR headsets, and it was acquired by ByteDance, the owner of TikTok, in 2021. In September 2024, the company launched the Pico 4 Ultra Enterprise headset, filling out the high end of its product line in addition to its G3 and Neo 3 legacy headsets.
Pico also has its set of full-body motion trackers to its product offerings to allow for full-body and object tracking. That’s helping it with its focus on location-based entertainment in markets such as China. It’s focused on WiFi7, hand tracking and motion tracking.
Leland Hedges, head of enterprise business at Pico, said that the LBE market in China has grown by 1,000% in the last six to nine months Pico has an app for PC streaming and another app for managing devices over a LAN. Pico can track play spaces with columns or cordoned-off areas. Hedges said the company will share 15 different user stories at AWE in public places such as zoos, museums, aquariums and planetariums.
    Convai
Purnendu Mukherjee, CEO of Convai, showed me a bunch of demos at the Game Developers Conference where it has been able to create avatar-based demos of generative AI solutions with 3D animated people. These can be used to show off brands and greet people on web sites or as avatars in games.
At AWE, Convai will also off learning and training scenarios for education and enterprises through a variety of simulations. Convai can render high fidelity avatars that are effectively coming from the cloud. At GDC, Convai scanned me and captured my voice so that it can create a lifelike avatar of me. These avatars can be created quickly and answer a variety of questions from website visitors. The idea is to enable non-technical people to create simulations without the need to code anything.
In a demo, Convai’s avatar of me said, “I’ve been covering the games industry for many years now at games beat I’ve seen it evolve from the arcades to the massive global phenomenon it is today. I love digging into the business side of gaming, the technology, the culture, the whole shebang.” Convai will announce pricing for its self-serve platform as well as an enterprise subscription fee.
    Doublepoint
Ohto Pentikäinen, CEO of Doublepoint, has a technology that detects the gesture you can make with your hand. It captures that movement via a smartwatch and allows you to control things on a TV interface or an XR device. With Android XR, Doublepoint is showing off demos where gesture control can unlock a more intuitive and comfortable augmented reality experience for those wearing AR glasses. Xreal is one of the glasses makers that is using the technology for controlling an AR user interface with gestures.
“Our technology is able to fully control a XR system. A stat that we can update you on is that there’s 150,000 people who have downloaded the technology so far, and we have a developer community of over 2,000 people since January 2024,” Pentikäinen said.
Now the company is starting its own Doublepoing developer program, and this adds layers on top of the enterprise client. So now the company can provide technology for indie developers or startups that are building augmented reality or AI hardware experiences.
“We’re empowering developers in AR robotics and AI hardware, and we’re providing everything that we’re providing the enterprise clients, but for a much reduced price,” Pentikäinen said.

Augmented World Expo 2025 will draw 400 speakers, 6K attendees and 300 global exhibitors
Ori Inbar, CEO of AWE, believes that the XR revolution is “ready to conquer the mainstream.” But to get there, he believes the industry still needs to create “head-turning content that must be experienced.” Of course, the red hot days of the “metaverse,” inspired by Neal Stephenson’s Snow Crash sci-fi novel in 1992, is no longer driving the industry forward. Pico VR Pico started out in Beijing, China, in 2015 and is now hitting its 10th anniversary. Convai Purnendu Mukherjee, CEO of Convai, showed me a bunch of demos at the Game Developers Conference where it has been able to create avatar-based demos of generative AI solutions with 3D animated people. Doublepoint Ohto Pentikäinen, CEO of Doublepoint, has a technology that detects the gesture you can make with your hand. • Masterplan & Sports Complex La Paz by CCA: Resilient Urban Design

Masterplan & Sports Complex La Paz | © Jaime Navarro
In La Paz, Baja California Sur, the transformation of El Cajoncito, a neglected dry riverbed central to the city’s stormwater system, marks a strategic urban intervention led by CCA | Bernardo Quinzaños. The Masterplan La Paz addresses the fragmented nature of the city’s spatial fabric by reconceiving this infrastructural void as a connective civic spine. The project is not merely about landscape or recreation; it functions as an integrated ecological, hydrological, and social framework.

Reframing the Urban Void: Context and Design Intent
The master plan is rooted in a clear intention: to bridge socio-spatial divides and enhance resilience in a region highly susceptible to seasonal flooding. El Cajoncito, which becomes impassable during the rainy season, historically reinforced urban disconnection. Residents of adjacent neighborhoods were required to circumvent it by traveling between four and eight kilometers despite the separation being no more than 200 meters. The master plan reconceives this gap not as a barrier but as an opportunity to integrate infrastructure and urban life.
Informed by a collaborative process involving technical consultants, municipal authorities, and the local community, the project articulates infrastructure as a tool for civic repair. Public space, mobility, and water management are synthesized into a singular spatial proposal, creating a precedent for interventions in Latin American secondary cities facing similar socio-environmental challenges.
Masterplan & Sports Complex La Paz Spatial Strategy
At the heart of the project is a linear spatial strategy that reorients movement and redefines thresholds within the city. The Paseo Lineal, a continuous pedestrian and cycling path, forms the connective tissue of the master plan. Stretching from the city’s marina to the new sports complex, this spine is both infrastructural and ecological. It incorporates rainwater mitigation systems, shaded rest areas, and integrated bus shelters, creating a multimodal corridor that prioritizes non-motorized transport and public transit.
A critical architectural gesture within this system is the bridge that spans El Cajoncito. It addresses the acute lack of connectivity by enabling direct, safe passage between neighborhoods, fundamentally altering local movement patterns. Rather than serving as an isolated object, the bridge is embedded in a network of social and ecological flows.
The project avoids monofunctional zoning and instead embraces layered programming that intersperses recreational, cultural, and environmental uses. This pluralism is essential to its success as a public space. The spatial organization acknowledges the diversity of its users, from athletes and children to commuters and spectators, ensuring the infrastructure supports everyday and exceptional activities.
    Architectural Language and Material Intelligence
The Conjunto Deportivo La Paz forms a key anchor of the master plan. Its architecture is defined by modularity, climatic responsiveness, and material economy. The baseball pavilions, arranged as four repeated units, are designed with variations in field size and complexity to accommodate a wide range of users, from young children to professional-level athletes. The modular approach streamlines construction while allowing for phased expansion.
Material decisions respond directly to the site’s climatic conditions. Steel frames provide structural clarity and durability, while open facades and ridge vents enable passive cross-ventilation. Shaded seating areas and integrated benches serve spectators and athletes, offering thermal comfort in the region’s high temperatures. These elements are not ornamental but spatial devices rooted in environmental performance and user comfort.
The multipurpose building further expands the programmatic scope. Two offset gabled volumes house classrooms, offices, a library, and spaces for cultural activities such as dance and music. The flexible structure supports simultaneous functions without formal separation and encourages informal overlaps and civic interaction. Its open-air double-height space is a community forum that blurs the boundary between the building and the plaza.
The architectural language is intentionally restrained. The use of organic forms in certain shaded structures softens the sports complex’s visual rigidity and fosters a more approachable atmosphere without compromising programmatic clarity.
    Infrastructure as a Social Catalyst
The project’s impact extends beyond physical infrastructure. By decentralizing public amenities, the masterplan challenges the historic concentration of civic life along La Paz’s malecón. The project redistributes access to recreation, culture, and mobility by repositioning investment in underrepresented neighborhoods.
Since its opening, the sports complex has functioned as a venue and a civic platform. It accommodates various events, including tournaments and cultural festivals, activating the site throughout the day and seasons. Providing official-quality baseball fields is particularly significant in a city with a strong sporting culture but limited infrastructure. The center fosters intergenerational engagement and strengthens communal ties.
The Masterplan La Paz exemplifies how architecture, when embedded in broader territorial and social strategies, can exceed form-making limits. It demonstrates that infrastructural projects, often perceived as technical or neutral, can instead serve as active instruments for equity, resilience, and civic expression. The work of CCA | Bernardo Quinzaños offers a thoughtful model for integrating architecture and landscape into the city’s life, not through spectacle but through the careful choreography of space, structure, and use.

  • What's New on Netflix in June 2025

The third and final season of dystopian survival series Squid Game—one of Netflix's most-watched shows—is coming in June. The South Korean thriller picks up after last season's cliffhanger, with Gi-hunat the center of the new game. The new season will be available on June 27.

Also on June's lineup is the return of FUBAR, the action series starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Monica Barbaro as a father and daughter who both work for the CIA. Carrie-Anne Moss joins the cast this season as a former East German spy. On the documentary side, Netflix will stream Titan: The OceanGate Disasterfollowing its premiere at the Tribeca Festival just a few days earlier. The feature uses first-hand accounts of former OceanGate employees to create a portrait of CEO Stockton Rush and the history leading up to the submersible's failure in 2023. The platform will also drop three new installments of its anthology series Trainwreck, which covers major news events gone wrong. This month's stories cover the deaths at 2021's Astroworld music festival, the rise and fall of former Toronto mayor Rob Ford, and the ill-fated "poop cruise". Sports docs this month include Power Moves with Shaquille O'Neal, a series that follows Shaq in his role as president of Reebok Basketball alongside Allen Iverson, and season two of AMERICA'S SWEETHEARTS: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders. Netflix comedy specials in June include Justin Willman: Magic Loverand Steph Tolev: Filth Queen. Owen Wilson stars in this sports comedy that sounds like a mix of Ted Lasso and Happy Gilmore. He’s Pryce Cahill in Stick, a former professional golfer whose career ended decades ago, long before he was ready to throw in the proverbial clubs. With his life in shambles, Pryce gains a reignited flame for the sport and puts all his golf balls into the basket of a rising young player named Santi, who he believes he can turn into a star.
Marc Maron and Judy Greer are among its main cast, with Timothy Olyphant in a guest role. Wilson serves as executive producer. Stick consists of 10 episodes, with the first three premiering at once before a weekly release schedule. Whether or not this comedy ranks among the best shows on Apple TV+ remains to be seen, but the cast and the premise, albeit one that’s been done time and time again, could be a winning formula.
    Stream Stick on Apple TV+.
IronheartWalt Disney Studios Motion PicturesThe foray of the Marvel Cinematic Universeinto television continues with Ironheart, the 14th series produced by Marvel Studios and the latest in the overall canon that links them all together. Following the events in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Dominique Thorne reprises her role as Riri Williams. Now an MIT student, Riri returns home and deals with conflicts in technology and magic. As fans will recall, in the 2022 movie, Riri created her own Iron Man-like suit of armor, proving that she’s a downright genius.
With just six episodes in the short series, Ironheart will complete Phase Five of the MCU. Anthony Ramos, Lyric Ross, and Alden Ehrenreich also star, while several others, including Sacha Baron Cohen, have undisclosed roles.

    Squid Game season 3Noh Ju-han / Netflix
Cue the ominous music as Squid Game is back for its third and final season. While it was a long wait between seasons 1 and 2, it has only been six months since season 2 premiered, which ended with a devastating cliffhanger. The South Korean dystopian survival thriller centers around a sick and twisted game that pits desperate people against one another in deadly versions of classic children’s games to win a huge cash prize. Serving as social commentary on capitalism and class disparity, Squid Game runs deeper than the violence.
