It's the first time anyone has attempted to reach orbit with a rocket designed and built in Australia. Gilmour's three-stage rocket, named Eris, could launch at any time during a 10-hour window Thursday, local time. In the United States, the launch window runs from 5:30 pm EDT Wednesday until 3:30 am EDT Thursday. The debut launch of Gilmour's Eris rocket is purely a test flight. Gilmour has tested the rocket's engines and rehearsed the countdown last year, loading propellant and getting within 10 seconds of launch. But Gilmour cautioned in a post on LinkedIn early Wednesday that "test launches are complex." Gilmour added on social media that "weather, systems checks, or technical issues may delay the flight—sometimes by hours, days, or longer." Gilmour, based in Gold Coast, Australia, was founded in 2012 by two brothers—Adam and James Gilmour—who came to the space industry after careers in banking and marketing. Today, Gilmour employs more than 200 people, mostly engineers and technicians. Most are recent engineering graduates in their 20s, along with a handful of space industry veterans with experience at companies like Rocket Lab, Firefly Aerospace, Avio, and Airbus. The company has raised approximately $90 million, primarily from venture capital firms, to get the first Eris rocket to the launch pad. The funding also paid for construction of Bowen Orbital Spaceport, Gilmour's launch site in the Australian state of Queensland. Apart from launch vehicles, Gilmour is working on its own satellite platform, which could launch on Eris or foreign rockets. Looking for stable flight But Eris is the core of Gilmour's business. Built to haul small satellites to orbit, the rocket stands 82 feet (25 meters) tall and has an unusual design for a modern launcher, with three stages, each powered by hybrid engines burning a proprietary solid fuel mixed with a liquid oxidizer. Hybrid engines are an unconventional choice. They have a low thrust density, meaning they produce less thrust per unit area of the engine's nozzle. Effectively, hybrid engines produce relatively little thrust for their size. Hybrid rocket engines also burn fuel more slowly than traditional solid- or liquid-fueled rockets, making it difficult to reach high thrust levels. They are less complex (and probably cheaper) than a liquid-fueled rocket engine, and unlike a solid rocket motor, hybrid engines can be throttled or turned off in the event of a problem. For these reasons, Virgin Galactic's commercial suborbital rocket plane uses a hybrid engine burning a rubber-based solid fuel and liquid nitrous oxide. Gilmour's rocket uses hydrogen peroxide for an oxidizer. The company hasn't released details about the rocket's solid fuel, citing proprietary reasons. Four of Gilmour's Sirius engines power the first stage of the Eris rocket, collectively generating more than 100,000 pounds of thrust. A single Sirius engine is mounted on the second stage, and Eris' third stage is driven by a smaller liquid-fueled engine named Phoenix, also designed by Gilmour Space. Like many launch startups, Gilmour is setting modest expectations for the inaugural flight of Eris. The first time Gilmour will ignite four of its Sirius engines at the same time will be in the final moments before liftoff. "Eris is a first-of-its-kind rocket," Gilmour wrote on social media. "While it’s capable of reaching orbit, that’s not the expectation this time. (For context: SpaceX made orbit on its fourth try.) This mission is all about gathering critical data to improve future flights." Michelle Gilmour, the company's head of marketing and communications, told Ars the first milestone of the test flight "would simply be getting off the pad. Then, we’d be looking for 10 to 20 seconds of stable flight." A “manageable” drop zone If the rocket makes it that far, it will clear the coastline and head northeast, soaring over the Great Barrier Reef and the Coral Sea. This flight path raised concerns about environmental impacts to the Great Barrier Reef, but the government of Queensland determined the environmental risk "would likely be manageable" with drop zones for the first and second stages of the rocket outside the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area. The Eris rocket will fly northeast from Bowen Orbital Spaceport over the Great Barrier Reef. Credit: Queensland Government Australia's government approved a launch facility license for Gilmour Space in April of last year, and the Australian Space Agency granted a launch permit for the first flight of the Eris rocket in November. Australia's Civil Aviation Safety Authority gave Gilmour airspace approval in February. But then, Gilmour encountered more regulatory issues as a tropical cyclone churned off the coast of the launch site. The regulatory and weather delays abated, and the Australian Space Agency issued its final approval for Gilmour's launch last week. This is all uncharted territory for not just Gilmour, but also Australia's government. Australia hosted a handful of satellite launches with US and British rockets from 1967 through 1971, but Gilmour's Eris is the first all-Australian launch vehicle designed for orbital flight. The Eris rocket is capable of delivering about 670 pounds (305 kilograms) of mass into low-Earth orbit, a payload capacity roughly equivalent to Rocket Lab's Electron launch vehicle, which flies from New Zealand, home of the world's only other operational commercial spaceport in the Southern Hemisphere. A perfect flight for the Eris rocket would see it reach an orbit around 120 miles (200 kilometers) high at an inclination of 33 degrees to the equator, according to Gilmour. Just in case, the company has placed a jar of Vegemite, a popular food spread in Australia, on Eris' third stage in a tongue-in-cheek nod to Aussie culture. Image: The Pokémon CompanyThe Pokémon Company has revealed that the Pokémon Fossil Museum, a travelling exhibit of Pokémon skeletons and fossils for pudding paleontologists, will be leaving Japan for the first time in 2026. The first exhibit to debut outside of Japan will be at Chicago's Field Museum in Illinois, and is due to open on 22nd May 2026. That gives you a full year to start saving up to visit. The exhibit is a mix of real, "life-size" replicas of Pokémon skeletons and comparisons to real fossils. It'll be up to aspiring researchers to spot similarities and differences between the likes of SUE the T.rex and Tyrantrum or the Archaeopteryx and Archeops. While the console’s handheld display supports VRR (variable refresh rate) technology to smooth out inconsistent framerates, the console’s Docked Mode output does not. Just weeks ago, Nintendo removed mentions of VRR support in Docked Mode from its official website for the upcoming console. However, Digital Foundry has now confirmed that developers have been informed of the feature’s absence when connecting the console to a TV. Nintendo Switch 2 loses VRR in Docked Mode In a recent video, Digital Foundry lead Richard Leadbetter confirmed the curious VRR decision in a deep breakdown of the Nintendo Switch 2 components. Backed by a source of developer documentation, it’s stated that the Dock simply doesn’t support VRR. “As far as Switch 2 developers are concerned, VRR, right now at least, is indeed a function of the internal display only and that there is no support at all right now for VRR over HDMI,” Leadbetter explained.” The respected journalist and video games analyst explained that the dock included with the Nintendo Switch 2 might not support the technology due to its older HDMI port. “The best theory that we have for this is that the dock’s Display Port to HDMI connector doesn’t support standard HDMI VRR, but whatever is the cause, we really hope to see Nintendo provide some sort of solution in due course.” With the constrained specifications of the Nintendo Switch 2, VRR support is a fantastic option. As 120Hz screens become more common, 40fps modes are offering great experiences for titles that can’t hit 60fps. For the Switch 2, this type of mode will be possible in Portable Mode, but not in Docked Mode. If this is indeed a hardware issue, the only way to actually bring VRR to Docked Mode would be with a revised dock sometime in the future which would split the user base. It’s a feature I’ve wanted for years, since pairing calendar events with reminders means I can get an accurate overview of my day at a glance. But there’s one main shortcoming in Calendar’s current implementation. In iOS 18, you get only two options for integrating reminders: you can show all scheduled reminders on your calendar or you can hide reminders altogether For some users, showing all reminders in the Calendar app might work fine. But for me, and I suspect many others, it’s less than ideal. It would be great if Calendar let you enable or disable certain Reminders lists, that way you’re not clogging your calendar up with reminders that are irrelevant. Fantastical, an excellent third-party calendar app, lets you pick and choose which Reminders lists show up on your calendar. Netflix has more than doubled the number of people watching its ad-supported tier over the last year. At its upfront presentation for advertisers on Wednesday, the company revealed that the $7.99 per month plan now reaches more than 94 million users around the world each month – a big increase from the 40 million it reported in 2024 and the 70 million it revealed last November. The streaming giant’s ad tier has seen rapid growth since its debut in 2022. As the service grows more comfortable with ads, it’s getting ready to debut more formats by the end of 2026, including pause ads, which it first started experimenting with last year, and interactive ads that appear in the middle of what you’re watching. Netflix stopped reporting how many total subscribers it adds each quarter, but it last said it had over 300 million globally in January. Amy Reinhard, Netflix’s president of advertising, said the streaming service has “the most engaged audience anywhere,” with subscribers on its ad-supported tier spending an average of 41 hours per month on the service. The new ad formats are part of Netflix’s in-house advertising platform, which is now live in the US after arriving in Canada. It plans to bring the platform to all 12 countries with ad-supported plans by June. “The foundations of our ads business are in place,” Reinhard said. “And going forward, the pace of progress will be even faster.”

AI company Schemata has come out of stealth and announced $5 million in seed funding to accelerate the development of its training platform. The company’s 3D reality capture, spatial AI, and contextual information can help the defense and enterprise sectors more rapidly and cost-effectively create photorealistic and interactive training programs. The new platform is already being piloted by the Department of Defense. Schemata’s technology converts 2D images into photorealistic 3D environments using 3D reality capture. It then uses spatial AI to apply contextual information to those assets, as well as an AI Instructor so that users can engage with the 3D simulations through voice or text. The result is personalized AI-enabled training assistance that can be created 10 times faster and up to 85% more cost-effectively than traditional content creation means, the company said. The startup’s origins trace back to Stanford University, where founders James Brown and Huy Nguyen first developed the concept for an AI-driven simulation platform leveraging Brown’s insights on military training and simulation and Nguyen’s expertise in 3D graphics and computer vision​. The pair brought on former congressional staffer and co-founder Quin Roberts, and left Stanford last June to build Schemata. “By harnessing the latest advances in generative AI’s reasoning capabilities, we can more effectively parse complex 3D data—and, in turn, gain deeper insights into real-world environments,” said Brown, Schemata CEO, i an statement. “In the Marine Corps, everything I did was centered around large-scale physical operations on complex terrain and equipment. At Stanford, we saw how AI was transforming knowledge work, and we wanted to bring those same advancements to those who work out in the physical world”. 3D reality capture is the process of using technologies like laser scanners, drones, and photogrammetry to digitally reconstruct physical spaces in 3D​. The result is a highly accurate virtual model of a real environment. Spatial AI refers to AI systems that can understand and interact within these spaces – in other words, machines navigating the environments with human-like perception​. By combining these two technologies, Schemata can quickly generate a lifelike virtual replica of any location and embed an intelligent virtual instructor to guide users through it. Within these digital environments, the AI Instructor can dynamically interact with end-users: answering questions, highlighting objects, and adapting scenarios in real time. For example, an operator using a device loaded with Schemata’s models can ask a question out loud and receive instant guidance. Training modules that once took specialists months to build can now be generated in hours​ directly from a company’s existing training materials. “Our AI Instructor is like having a dedicated expert by your side 24/7 in a physical environment,” said Quin Roberts, Schemata’s COO, in a statement. “It can instantly analyze a 3D scene, point out safety hazards or operational steps, and respond to the user’s voice or text queries in real-time. This level of interactive, on-demand instruction simply isn’t available with conventional tools.” The timing of Schemata’s innovation aligns with a surging demand for virtual training across defense and industry. In the defense sector, the U.S. military already invests over $12 billion per year in simulation-based training​. Yet, these investments have primarily focused on high-end systems for pilots and specialized units. Schemata’s platform aims to broaden that reach. The platform is already being piloted in sectors like defense, energy, and infrastructure, where training often involves complex environments and high stakes. Demand is strong, with Schemata already being awarded $3.4 million in Department of Defense (DoD) contracts over the past eight months. Schemata’s oversubscribed funding round includes investments from prominent venture capital firms, led by Owl Ventures, with participation from a16z speedrun, Alumni Ventures, Anorak Ventures, and Time Zero Capital. Last summer, Schemata was selected for the third cohort of a16z’s speedrun startup program, with an acceptance rate of less than 1%. “We see a future where spatially-aware AI agents operate with a full context of the physical world—just like frontier language models now operate across digital systems,” said Nguyen, Schemata CTO, in a statement. “That’s why we’re connecting AI to rich 3D environments with embedded semantic data.
