3D Printing Events and 3DPI on the road
3D printing events are keeping our reporters busy. In May, Belgium’s Flemish Brabant capital hosted the meeting of Materialise 3D Printing in Hospitals Forum 2025, which has become a key gathering for the medical 3D printing community since its launch in 2017.
This year, 140 international healthcare professionals convened for two days of talks, workshops, and lively discussion on how Materialise’s software enhances patient care. The Forum’s opening day, hosted at Leuven’s historic Irish College, featured 16 presentations by 18 healthcare clinicians and medical 3D printing experts.
In April, 3DPI headed to Chicago where the global, volunteer-driven organization Additive Manufacturing Users Groupalso hosted its 37th annual AMUG Conference in Chicago, where six individuals were awarded the DINOAward. This recognition highlights their contributions, lasting impact, and support of AMUG and the additive manufacturing community.
Honorees included Amy Alexander, Unit Head and Mechanical Development & Applied Computational Engineering at Mayo Clinic; Dan Braley, Senior Technical Fellow at Boeing Global Services; Ryan Kircher, Principal Additive Manufacturing Engineer at rms Company; Dallas Martin, Additive Manufacturing Engineer at Toyota; Patrick Gannon, Director of Production-Additive Manufacturing at Ricoh USA, Inc.; and Brennon White, Technology Specialist – Additive Manufacturing Design and Manufacturing at General Motors.

  • Cabo Corazón Hotel: Rábago Architects Redefine Coastal Hospitality Through Adaptive Reuse

Cabo Corazón Hotel | © Oscar Hernandez
Set against the vivid landscape of Cabo San Lucas, the Cabo Corazón Hotel by Rábago Architects represents a deliberate shift in how hospitality architecture can evolve within the constraints of existing urban infrastructure. The original complex, constructed in 2010, comprised two isolated towers that lacked integration with one another or the surrounding coastal setting. Rather than demolishing and rebuilding, the intervention seeks to reclaim and rearticulate the architectural narrative through a substantial new insertion: Torre Corazón.

Reconfiguring Coastal Hospitality: Design Intent and Urban Integration
This angular 120,000 m² volume serves as both programmatic spine and spatial reconciler. It reframes the original towers not as obsolete remnants but as architectural elements to be recontextualized. Rather than erasing history, the project anchors its design intent in architectural memory, fostering continuity within transformation. Torre Corazón is a decisive architectural gesture that mediates between old and new, integrating disconnected parts into a unified, legible whole. The intervention reflects a broader strategy, responding to the growth of tourism in Los Cabos while resisting conventional resort development’s extractive, tabula rasa tendencies.
    Spatial Composition and Programmatic Reorganization
The intervention’s heart lies in a careful reworking of programmatic and spatial relationships. Torre Corazón introduces a wide range of new uses, including a convention center, restaurant, rooftop bar, terraces, guest rooms, and pool lounge, configured not as isolated amenities but as part of an interdependent architectural system.
Circulation is restructured by introducing a central atrium, which organizes internal flows and visually anchors the building. Its triangular plan geometry finds formal resonance throughout the project, notably in the repetition of inclined planes and low walls that establish a consistent spatial language. This atrium facilitates horizontal and vertical connectivity, effectively weaving together public, semi-public, and private domains.
The sculptural staircase, unfolding toward the atrium, emerges as a key spatial feature, at once a circulation route and architectural expression. It frames the atrium’s vertical void and visually connects various levels, echoing the horizontal bands that define the building’s massing. The result is a fluid choreography of spaces that moves away from the compartmentalized logic of the original design.
At the ground level, the lobby extends into a restaurant, pool bar, and outdoor terraces, all connected to the beach club. This vital programmatic anchor strengthens the project’s relationship with the oceanfront. The design balances openness and containment, offering moments of permeability while framing views toward “El Arco” and the Sea of Cortez.
Cabo Corazón Hotel Materiality and Climatic Responsiveness
A defining feature of the intervention is its material discipline. The consistent use of white concrete, both inside and out, is a strategic response to the climatic conditions of Baja California Sur. Its high albedo reduces solar gain, enhancing thermal comfort without reliance on excessive mechanical systems. The material also echoes the light and texture of the surrounding desert context while asserting a minimalist architectural language.
The use of marble flooring across indoor and outdoor areas reinforces the tactile continuity of the design, bridging the interior with the white sand beaches that define the local landscape. In the upper guest room levels, tropical wood furnishings introduce warmth, texture, and a sense of groundedness, softening the starkness of the concrete envelope and creating an atmosphere of tactile contrast.
The rooftop, meanwhile, exemplifies a hybrid architectural vocabulary: wood decking, an infinity pool, and a palapa-like canopy merge traditional materials with contemporary detailing. These choices are not merely aesthetic; they operate as climatic devices, mediating sun exposure while facilitating natural ventilation and social occupation.

In one of the foundational texts of Taoism, Chinese philosopher Zhuang Zhou recalls a dream in which he was a butterfly, soaring through the sky with no recollection of his human form. Upon waking, though, he finds himself firmly in a bipedal body, prompting an important question: is he a butterfly dreaming he’s Zhuang Zhou or a man dreaming he’s a butterfly?
This ancient story of transformation and the thin line between states of mind informs a dazzling new installation by Chiharu Shiota. “Metamorphosis of Consciousness” suspends glimmering lights and faint butterfly wings above an iron-framed twin bed topped with a white blanket and pillow. Rejecting the strict separation between body and mind, Shiota references her belief in the spirit’s ability to endure long after one’s final breath. “While each time we slip into sleep, it is a rehearsal for death—a journey beyond the body,” she says.
“Metamorphosis of Consciousness”, mixed media, dimensions variable
Exemplary of the artist’s interest in memory and knowledge, “Metamorphosis of Consciousness” is just one of the immersive works in the monumental exhibition Silent Emptiness at Red Brick Art Museum in Beijing.
On view through August 31, the show revolves around Shiota’s ongoing explorations into the “presence in absence,” this time extending such inquiries into ideas of emptiness as it relates to Eastern philosophy and enlightenment.
Included in the exhibtion is an antique Tibetan Buddhist doorway that anchors “Gateway to Silence,” an explosive installation that entwines the elaborately carved wood structure in a dense, criss-crossing labyrinth of string. Red thread, one of the artist’s favored materials, symbolizes relationships. And in this case, it’s an invitation to introspection and finding an awareness of the present moment.
Metaphorically interlacing art, memory, and faith, Shiota very literally visualizes the intextricable web in which we’re all bound, regardless of geography or era. Pieces like “Echoes of Time” and “Rooted Memories” incorporate materials like soil and large stones, presenting the passage of time as cyclical and the past as always shaping the present.

Born in Osaka, the artist has lived in Berlin for much of her life, and Silent Emptiness also tethers her roots to more global experiences. Shiota likened her understanding of herself to the way salt molecules appear as crystals only after water evaporates. “I was not visible as an individual in Japan,” she says. “Whereas I did not know who I was, what I wanted to do, and what was necessary in the water, I feel that I became an individual and crystal, and understood those things for the first time by coming to Germany.”
Another example of finding presence in absence, Shiota’s migration and experience of discovery provides an important touchstone for her thinking and practice. She adds, “Absence does not signify disappearance but rather an integration into a vaster universe, re-entering the flow of time and forming new connections with all things.”“Gateway to Silence”, mixed media, dimensions variable

  • Meta faces increasing scrutiny over widespread scam ads

    Published
May 22, 2025 10:00am EDT close 'CyberGuy' praises Trump admin for Take It Down Act Kurt Knutsson joins "Fox & Friends" to discuss President Donald Trump's Take It Down Act and Meta avoiding removing scam ads from its platforms.  Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, is under fire after a major report revealed that thousands of fraudulent ads have been allowed to run on its platforms. According to the Wall Street Journal, Meta accounted for nearly half of all scam complaints tied to Zelle transactions at JPMorgan Chase between mid-2023 and mid-2024. Other banks have also reported a high number of fraud cases linked to Meta's platforms.JOIN THE FREE "CYBERGUY REPORT": GET MY EXPERT TECH TIPS, CRITICAL SECURITY ALERTS AND EXCLUSIVE DEALS, PLUS INSTANT ACCESS TO MY FREE "ULTIMATE SCAM SURVIVAL GUIDE" WHEN YOU SIGN UP! Meta logoWhy are scam ads so widespread? The problem of scam ads on Facebook has grown rapidly in recent years. Experts point to the rise of cryptocurrency schemes, AI-generated content and organized criminal groups operating from Southeast Asia. These scams range from fake investment opportunities to misleading product offers and even the sale of nonexistent puppies.FBI WARNS OF SCAM TARGETING VICTIMS WITH FAKE HOSPITALS AND POLICEOne example involves Edgar Guzman, a legitimate business owner in Atlanta, whose warehouse address was used by scammers in more than 4,400 Facebook and Instagram ads. These ads promised deep discounts on bulk merchandise, tricking people into sending money for products that never existed."What sucks is we have to break it to people that they've been scammed. We don't even do online sales," Guzman told reporters. Facebook login page on a laptopMeta's response: Is it enough?Meta says it's fighting back with new technology and partnerships, including facial-recognition tools and collaborations with banks and other tech companies. A spokesperson described the situation as an "epidemic of scams" and insisted that Meta is taking aggressive action, removing more than 2 million accounts linked to scam centers in several countries this year alone. However, insiders tell a different story. Current and former Meta employees say the company has been reluctant to make it harder for advertisers to buy ads, fearing it could hurt the company's bottom line. Staff reportedly tolerated between eight and 32 fraud "strikes" before banning accounts and scam enforcement was deprioritized to avoid losing ad revenue. META ENDS FACT-CHECKING PROGRAM AS ZUCKERBERG VOWS TO RESTORE FREE EXPRESSION ON FACEBOOK, INSTAGRAM Instagram on a smartphoneThe human cost of inactionVictims of these scams often lose hundreds or even thousands of dollars. In one case, fake ads promised free spice racks from McCormick & Co. for just a small shipping fee, only to steal credit card details and rack up fraudulent charges. Another common scam involves fake puppy sales, with victims sending deposits for pets that never arrive. Some scam operations are even linked to human trafficking, with criminal groups forcing kidnapped victims to run online fraud schemes under threat of violence.Legal and ethical questions for MetaMeta maintains that it is not legally responsible for fraudulent content on its platforms, citing Section 230 of federal law, which protects tech companies from liability for user-generated content. In court filings, Meta has argued that it "does not owe a duty to users" when it comes to policing fraud. Meanwhile, a class-action lawsuit over allegedly inflated ad reach metrics is moving forward, putting even more pressure on Meta to address transparency and accountability. How to protect yourself from scam adsStaying safe online takes a little extra effort, but it's well worth it. Here are some steps you can follow to avoid falling victim to scam ads.1. Check the source and use strong antivirus software: Look for verified pages and official websites. Scammers often copy the names and logos of trusted brands, but the web address or page details may be off. Always double-check the URL for slight misspellings or extra characters and avoid clicking links in ads if you're unsure about their legitimacy. The best way to safeguard yourself from malicious links that install malware, potentially accessing your private information, is to have strong antivirus software installed on all your devices. This protection can also alert you to phishing emails and ransomware scams, keeping your personal information and digital assets safe. Get my picks for the best 2025 antivirus protection winners for your Windows, Mac, Android and iOS devices.2. Be skeptical of deals that seem too good to be true: If an ad offers products at an unbelievable price or promises huge returns, pause and investigate before clicking. Scammers often use flashy discounts or urgent language to lure people in quickly. Take a moment to think before you act, and remember that if something sounds impossible, it probably is. 3. Research the seller: Search for reviews and complaints about the company or individual. If you can't find any credible information, it's best to avoid the offer. A quick online search can reveal if others have reported scams or had bad experiences, and legitimate businesses usually have a track record you can verify.4. Consider using a personal data removal service: There are companies that can help remove your personal info from data brokers and people-search sites. This means less of your data floating around for scammers to find and use. While these services usually charge a fee, they can save you a lot of time and hassle compared to doing it all yourself. Over time, you might notice fewer spam calls, emails and even a lower risk of identity theft. Check out my top picks for data removal services here.5. Never share sensitive information: Don't enter your credit card or bank details on unfamiliar sites. If you're asked for personal information, double-check the legitimacy of the request. Scammers may ask for sensitive data under the guise of "verifying your identity" or processing a payment, but reputable companies will never ask for this through insecure channels.6. Keep your devices updated: Keeping your software updated adds an extra layer of protection against the latest threats. Updates often include important security patches that fix vulnerabilities hackers might try to exploit. By regularly updating your devices, you help close those security gaps and keep your personal information safer from scammers and malware. 7. Report suspicious ads: If you see a scam ad on Facebook or Instagram, report it using the platform's tools. This helps alert others and puts pressure on Meta to take action. Reporting is quick and anonymous, and it plays a crucial role in helping platforms identify patterns and remove harmful content.8. Monitor your accounts: Regularly check your bank and credit card statements for unauthorized transactions, especially after making online purchases. Early detection can help you limit the damage if your information is compromised, and most banks have fraud protection services that can assist you if you spot something suspicious.By following these steps, you can better protect yourself and your finances from online scams. Staying alert and informed is your best defense in today's digital world.Kurt's key takeawaysThe mess with scam ads on Meta's platforms shows why it's important to look out for yourself online. Meta says it's working on the problem, but many people think it's not moving fast enough. By staying careful, questioning suspicious offers and using good security tools, you can keep yourself safer. Until the platforms step up their game, protecting yourself is the smartest move you can make.CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APPShould Meta be doing more to protect its users from scam ads, even if it means making changes that could affect its advertising revenue? Published May 22, 2025 10:00am EDT close 'CyberGuy' praises Trump admin for Take It Down Act Kurt Knutsson joins "Fox & Friends" to discuss President Donald Trump's Take It Down Act and Meta avoiding removing scam ads from its platforms. Meta logo (Kurt "CyberGuy" Knutsson)Why are scam ads so widespread? Facebook login page on a laptop (Kurt "CyberGuy" Knutsson)Meta's response: Is it enough?Meta says it's fighting back with new technology and partnerships, including facial-recognition tools and collaborations with banks and other tech companies. META ENDS FACT-CHECKING PROGRAM AS ZUCKERBERG VOWS TO RESTORE FREE EXPRESSION ON FACEBOOK, INSTAGRAM Instagram on a smartphone (Kurt "CyberGuy" Knutsson)The human cost of inactionVictims of these scams often lose hundreds or even thousands of dollars. Lloyds and Nationwide to use UK finance sector LLM
Industry-specific large language models could improve customer services, strengthen security and support regulatory compliance

Lloyds Banking Group and Nationwide Building Society are set to roll out a generative AItool that has been specifically designed for the UK finance sector.
The tool, known as FinLLM, was developed in the UK by Aveni alongside the two financial services companies, with both also investing money in the firm.
The large language modelis an attempt to offer GenAI designed for use in highly regulated UK finance companies.
LLMs are a type of artificial intelligence algorithm that uses deep learning techniques and massively large data sets to understand, summarise, generate and predict new content.
Banks are in the early stage of its application across customer services, operations, and compliance and security.
Following the completion of its core capabilities, FinLLM is set to move from research into real-world deployment. Both Lloyds Bank and Nationwide are now set to use the system, which is aligned with FCA guidance and the European UnionAI Act. The tool will eventually be available to the wider industry.
An LLM for the financial services sector could, for example, provide customers with explanations of complex financial matters, as well as support banks’ decisions in relation to regulatory compliance and staff making complicated calculations.
    Into the real world
Nationwide’s chief data officer, Sri Kanisapakkam, said the company worked with Aveni on the development. “We’re excited by the performance of FinLLM and the potential benefits it will bring both Nationwide and our customers, as we continually look to deliver better service and experience through the responsible adoption of new technologies,” he added.
Ranil Boteju, group chief data and analytics officer at Lloyds Banking Group, said Aveni’s FinLLM “will be a game changer for UK financial services”.
The bank first invested in Aveni in 2024, and co-created and tested FinLLM on real-life AI use cases.
Lexi Birch, head of Aveni Labs, said the company brought together the expertise of its natural language processing researchers and financial industry professionals “to shape a roadmap for delivering reliable generative AI to a highly regulated sector – where accuracy and trust are non-negotiable”.

    about Large Language Models

When developing LLMs, banks are paying close attention to potential risks associated with data privacy, security, regulatory compliance and potential bias in AI-based decision-making.
In terms of use cases, Chris Skinner, fintech industry expert and CEO at The Finanser, said industry-specific LLMs could help with the security of both banks and their customers. “AI bots will work out what you can trust, e.g. verifying whether the connections you make are real or fake, which in finance is critical,” he said. “With romance and deepfake scams, the more protections that AI can deliver to recognise the issues the better.
“Looking longer-term, your agentic AI bot will be the biggest security for any trade or transaction, as it will be your digital twin with its own identity and the protections therein,” said Skinner. “It’s not there yet, but FinLLM is a good start.”
Separately, Lloyds Bank announced last month that it will build, deploy and scale AI systems using Google Cloud’s Vertex AI to build a machine learning and GenAI development platform, which more than 300 of its data scientists will use.

  • Noctua and Pulsar create gaming mouse with built-in fan for sweaty hands

In context: Noctua is mostly known for its fans, CPU heatsinks, and other cooling products for computing devices. The Austrian company also cooperates with third-party peripheral and GPU manufacturers, though its latest partnership is likely the most unusual so far.
Noctua is putting a 4x4 cmfan inside a competitive gaming mouse made by Pulsar Gaming Gears. The Korean peripheral manufacturer announced the oddity ahead of Computex, promising that the new mouse would be demoed during the computer hardware show held in Taipei, Taiwan.
Noctua is well-known for the "exceptional" cooling performance of its fans, Pulsar stated, while gamers – and competitive gamers in particular – are prone to sweating during esports events. The Asian manufacturer is therefore equipping its pre-existing Feinmann gaming mouse with a tiny Noctua fan, so that gamers can be comfortable even in the heat of the most ferociousbattles.
Pulsar didn't have to reinvent the wheel, as the Feinmann already includes a very light shell riddled with holes. The Feinmann F01 is an ultra-lightweight gaming mouse weighing just 46g, providing all the features a competitive player would expect, including an 8,000Hz polling rate, a 32,000 DPI sensor, a "fast" 8K docking charger, and more.
Thanks to the newly embedded Noctua fan, gamers buying the new Feinmann model can expect their hands to be constantly cool. Even users with particularly sweaty grips should enjoy a more comfortable gaming experience. We would very much like to test Pulsar's statements while replaying Doom Eternal's DLC 1 during summer months, just to be absolutely sure it really works the way the manufacturer says.
    // Related Stories

Some Computex attendees say the Noctua-powered Feinmann mouse is indeed comfortable and the additional air flow keeps palms cool. Pulsar's product doesn't appear to be just a gimmick, though the specs are clearly being affected by the new fan. The mouse weight is now a bit higher, while battery life should be around 10-11 hours.
Pulsar said the mouse is still a prototype, so battery life and other specs are "preliminary." Modern wireless mice can go on for hundreds of hours on a single charge, so we're curious to know how the final product will turn out. The standard version of the Feinmann F01 Gaming Mouse is currently on sale at so we expect the new model will cost more than that.

  • Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket is adding that really jacked bug in next update

Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket will get its next major update on Thursday, May 29 which will add a new booster pack to the popular mobile game. Dubbed Extradimensional Crisis, the new pack will add Ultra Beasts from Pokémon Sun and Moon to the mix.
Since its release last year, Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket has received regular updates. Its most recent one, which featured two Celestial Guardians booster packs, introduced critters from the Alola region to the card game. Extradimensional Crisis will continue that thread, adding some missing monsters to the card pool.

    Recommended Videos

The big news is that the packs will add Ultra Beasts to the game, a set of eclectic Pokémon that are exclusive to Sun and Moon. That means that you’ll be able to battle with some of the series’ strangest — and most absurdly named — creatures, like Buzzwole and Guzzlord. Type: Null will get its own card too, bringing a very peculiar legendary to the game.
The update will also add more Alolan Pokémon to the mix, including new EX cards. A new trailer shows off a bunch of those new cards, which includes Tapu Koko EX.
As part of the update, the shop will be updated with some new collectibles. An Ultra Beast binder cover is coming and will be purchasable with shop tickets. Players can grab a floral display board too by participating in a new Wonder Pick event that will run between June 11 and June 28.
So consider this a bit of a PSA: start saving your hourglasses now. If you’re like me, you’ll probably want to do some 10 pack pulls early to get a chunk of the collection completed. If you’re hurting for resources, don’t forget to do your single player battles, as those will give you a lot as rewards. Monthly hourglass packs will also refresh in the shop at the end of May, so make sure to grab as many as you can now.
Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket is available now on iOS and Android devices.
