A week away from launch, Nintendo has confirmed which Nintendo Switch games have been tested for Switch 2, and it's great news for anyone with a huge collectionTech11:31, 29 May 2025So close, and yet so farNintendo Switch 2 is just seven days away (as is Mario Kart World), and while some units are already out in the wild, we've had some questions about backwards compatibility.After all, Nintendo has constantly said the "most" of the Switch 1's huge library will be playable on Switch 2, with some getting free upgrades and some including paid additions.‌Others, including Fortnite, will work right out of the box, but now Nintendo has revealed a much more extensive list of games that will (and won't) run on the new console.‌Here's all we've learned.Nintendo Switch 2 can play the majority of Switch 1 gamesOver on Nintendo's support page for backwards compatibility, the company has tested 75% of third-party games released on Switch 1.‌Considering that's more than 15,000 games, that's impressive, and more are being tested every day.Of the games tested, Nintendo says 118 of them have "start-up issues" of some description, while a further 50 "start up on Nintendo Switch 2 but include some in-game compatibility issues”.These include Mega Man Legacy Collection, Fall Guys, and Saints Row IV: Re-Elected.‌As for games that can't be played on Switch, the list is slim and includes Nintendo's Labo Toy-Con VR kit and apps like Hulu or Crunchyroll.Games like Fitness Boxing, DOOM Eternal, and Star Wars: Dark Forces Remaster are all expected to receive a patch before launch next week to improve compatibility.Switch 2 will play older games(Image: PA)‌Some games will require the original Nintendo Switch Joy-Con controllers, too, so don't get rid of those. I don’t like the look of GTA 6 and I’m not afraid to admit it – Reader’s Feature GameCentral Published May 17, 2025 1:00am Not everyone is looking forward to it (Rockstar Games) A reader explains all the problems he has with the Grand Theft Auto franchise in general and why e’s unlikely to ever buy GTA 6. There has, understandably, been a lot of talk about GTA 6 in the last few weeks, after the annoucement of the release date and the release of the new trailer. But there’s also been a lot of (well, some) talk recently from people admitting they don’t really like the series and aren’t actually that excited about a new one. I am one of those people and while others seem embarrassed of their opinion, I’m not afraid to explain the issues I have with it or why I think it is overrated in some areas. I’ll start with what I accept the game does very well, starting with the open world design and the general size and level of detail of it all. It’s obviously very impressive, although not that interactive, in that you can’t go into most buildings, and there’s little to no destruction effects either. I doubt that will be much different in GTA 6, simply because that sort of thing requires a ton of horsepower, that console don’t have yet. The detail from GTA comes less from the interactivity and more from the huge array of things you can see and do, with lots of mini-games and optional missions. All of that stuff is great and not only does GTA 5 still look good, but GTA 6 looks amazing. More than that, it looks extremely expensive. Over $1 billion according to the rumours. You can certainly see that money on screen and I’m sure it’s all matched by hundreds of hours of dialogue for even the smallest characters. I’m sure no expense was spared anywhere. I have three main problems with the games that already exist though and while they could be improved, or even removed entirely, in GTA 6 I’m not confident of that as Rockstar will assume, quite understandably, that if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. So the first issue I have is the gameplay: it’s just not good. Up to GTA 5 it was downright terrible, with overcomplicated and completely awful combat and driving – like you’re steering a boat is the common comparison. Some things, like controlling aircraft are so broken there’s just no point doing it. Just a teenage fantasy? (Rockstar Games) Nothing is fun, beyond the novelty of being in such a big game world, and almost every other similar game does it better. When you’re getting outdone by Saints Row, which could probably have been made with the catering budget of GTA 5, let alone 6, you know something’s wrong. My next problem is the plot. Rockstar get praised a lot for their dialogue, which I’ll get onto in a minute, but their plots are always paper thin to the point where they barely exist at all. I mean, what is the plot of GTA 5? Three men do crimes. The end. The game gets so caught up in its own size it never bothers to tell an actual story. The third issue, in my opinion, is the dialogue. Not necessarily the writing quality of it but the fact that it’s always so try-hard and edgy. Rockstar started making GTA 3 in the 90s and that’s no more obvious than in the dialogue, which sounds like every angst-ridden teen’s idea of tough guy dialogue. I get that’s exactly why the game is popular, but I don’t like it. Even though the head writer has left I see no sign of change in GTA 6, where main character Jason seems to already have morphed from just an ordinary looking guy in the first trailer to a musclebound beefcake who is so ultra cool women catcall him from the street when he’s driving by. I get it, the whole game is a teenage boy’s fantasy, but c’mon. Surely we can aim higher than that by now? I’m also worried about the trailers revelling in the absolute worst of American culture, which may be meant as parody but already comes across as endorsement. I think that’s particularly unfortunate given when they started this game they had no idea Trump would get in for a second time. More Trending I actually wonder whether that’s one of the reasons they’ve delayed the game, to rewrite some of the dialogue, but I imagine little will really change. And that’s why I have no interest in anything I’ve seen so far of GTA 6. Twenty-six years ago, a role-playing game based on the Harry Potter books was pitched and even received a demo. However, it never developed into a full game and only recently became known to the public through a museum tour.The Strong National Museum of Play in Rochester, New York, had kept some footage of this project. Andrew Borman, the museum's director of digital preservation, told GamesRadar+ that Volition, the developer behind the iconic Saints Row franchise, wanted to recreate the world from the books in a video game. Remember, it was 1999, two years before Electronic Arts' Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone came out, so there was no visual reference at that time. The footage, though can't be shared, presented a game which is "pretty much just PS1-era Harry and Hagrid wandering around a small, unpopulated, unfinished town." The outlet described its environment and characters would resemble what a "Baldur's Gate-style top-down RPG" could provide.Although no videos here, we're lucky to see some of the screenshots. There is a loading page and a scene showing tiny Harry and Hagrid standing together:The demo, which allowed you to switch characters freely but offered few other actions, was developed over roughly a couple of weeks, according to Borman. He also revealed a detail when the game was pitched: "The story is that, when Volition and THQ pitched this game, at least some of the THQ executives came dressed in robes and had owls with them."Unfortunately, the idea and demo did not evolve into a game, and the project seemed to stop there without any known reason. The project combines virtual reality with corresponding physical elements (for example, when walking through water in the documentary, you walk through shallow water in the real world) to create a truly sensory experience that takes viewers through the various stages of a typical garment’s production process, from the sweat shop all the way to the catwalk.What’s the purpose?The fashion industry is the second-largest polluter in the world. It accounts for 10% of all global carbon emissions, and a huge 60% of textiles are thrown away within one year of being made. On top of that, a single pair of denim jeans requires 10,000 liters of water to make.The creators of X-Ray Fashion recognize that our habit of constantly changing our wardrobes and disposing of clothes we no longer like is having a big impact. Their goal is to use this immersive experience to change consumer behavior by helping viewers understand the impact that their wardrobes have on the environment and people working in the industry. Ultimately, the project encourages lifestyle changes such as buying second-hand garments, taking better care of what we already own, and minimizing our overall fashion consumption.What’s the project?Trying to put how you’re feeling into words when experiencing complex emotions and mental health issues can often be difficult. Sarah Ticho encountered this challenge when trying to describe her grief and mental state to a doctor during a time when she needed help. The experience led her to collaborate with experience designer Niki Smit to develop SoulPaint, a VR project in which participants create artwork on an avatar that expresses their inner world using color, shapes, movement, and imagery.What’s the purpose?According to Harvard Medical School, miscommunication is at the heart of most medical errors. SoulPaint is a unique experience that aims to transform the way we communicate our emotions with others, remove the stigma around mental health, and trigger impactful conversations by creating a shared exhibition experience in public spaces worldwide. It will also ultimately provide a tool that allows patients to improve communication with health care professionals.What’s the project?Quantum’s Pursuit is a game by Limbitless Solutions that lets children with bionic limbs play the limb-different grandchildren of Dr. Quantum, a tech genius and wizard who has developed renewable energy. Dr. Quantum has been kidnapped by evil Galacdorks trying to steal his invention, and it’s the player’s goal to journey through the levels, defeat the boss, and save Dr. Quantum.The game allows hospitals to teach children how to use their new bionic limbs in a fun, engaging, and stress-free way, while also gaining insight into the needs of each child based on their muscle strength – information that is usually difficult to ascertain.What’s the purpose?Limbitless Solutions provides free bionic arms, training, and even covers travel costs for patients and their families. This incredible project can vastly improve the quality of life of children with limb differences and ease the transition to a bionic limb during an otherwise difficult time.What’s the project?Using VR, Follow the Investigation: Inside the ICC shows International Criminal Court (ICC) cases at various stages of the judicial process. The experience provides valuable insight into how the ICC system works to bring those responsible for crimes against humanity – including war crimes and genocide – to justice.Viewers witness testimonies from survivors of past ICC cases, visit field investigation sites, process evidence in ICC forensic labs, and sit in on courtroom proceedings drawn from a variety of infamous global cases.What’s the purpose?This project serves as a somber reminder of and education about the work of the ICC and the process of seeking justice, helping to raise awareness of atrocities and the experiences of survivors to ensure continued global support for their recovery and the work of the ICC. The project also offers an impactful way for victims of horrific crimes to better understand the legal processes that relate to their own cases.What’s the project?In World Reborn, the world’s first activism adventure game, your goal is to save the world after a cataclysmic event fractures it into multiple realities. The mobile game uses AR to combine actions in the real world with choices in the virtual world, encouraging players to make a difference in both. Real-world actions that help you progress through the game include donating money, picking up trash, completing breathing exercises, and more.What’s the purpose?90% of the 72 million teenagers in the U.S. play video games. Having grown up with an awareness of pressing global issues – including climate change, mental health, and racial injustice – they want to make a difference, but often feel powerless to do so. The founders of Wicked Saints, creators of World Reborn, worked for the world’s largest peacebuilding organization and trained young movement leaders all over the world. They saw how many lives were transformed using an approach called Common Ground Activism – attacking the problem, not the person. Now, they’re building World Reborn to empower young people with CGA skills and drive change through incremental steps in the real world. Weaving together intergenerational relationships and items of the present day, the story examines just how drastically things might change if we don’t take action now, and how meaningful climate action will ultimately change us.Trigger warning: griefWhat’s the project?Drawing on the 17-year life cycle and symbolism of the Brood X cicadas, this virtual reality experience follows a mother’s journey to find meaning after the loss of her son. Using personal audio files, music, and images, the player is taken on a journey through the mother’s narrative, interacting with the experiences of passing time and grief.What’s the purpose?Year of the Cicadas is a mother’s reflection on the power of finding meaning in the most tragic of stories, and how that meaning transforms over time. The goal of this experience is to provide a window into the life-long journey of meaning-making after child loss for those who may know or work with bereaved parents and family members.Trigger warning: sexual assault, child abuseWhat’s the project?This mobile game is designed for parents who suspect their child may be the victim of sexual abuse or who want to talk to their children about topics like consent. Patito uses minigames to show a young character realizing he is a victim, providing a sensitive approach to educating children and parents on these difficult topics.What’s the purpose?According to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), over 4.5 million children are victims of sexual abuse every year in Mexico. Pink Bear Games have created Patito to raise awareness of this issue and help give parents an effective way to communicate about sexual abuse and consent with their children.
