  • Why We're Unlikely to Get Artificial General Intelligence Any Time Soon

OpenAI CEO and Sam Altman believe Artificial General Intelligence could arrive within the next few years. But the speculations of some technologists "are getting ahead of reality," writes the New York Times, adding that many scientists "say no one will reach AGI without a new idea — something beyond the powerful neural networks that merely find patterns in data. That new idea could arrive tomorrow. But even then, the industry would need years to develop it."

"The technology we're building today is not sufficient to get there," said Nick Frosst, a founder of the AI startup Cohere who previously worked as a researcher at Google and studied under the most revered AI researcher of the last 50 years. "What we are building now are things that take in words and predict the next most likely word, or they take in pixels and predict the next most likely pixel. That's very different from what you and I do." In a recent survey of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence, a 40-year-old academic society that includes some of the most respected researchers in the field, more than three-quarters of respondents said the methods used to build today's technology were unlikely to lead to AGI.
Opinions differ in part because scientists cannot even agree on a way of defining human intelligence, arguing endlessly over the merits and flaws of IQ tests and other benchmarks. Comparing our own brains to machines is even more subjective. This means that identifying AGI is essentially a matter of opinion.... And scientists have no hard evidence that today's technologies are capable of performing even some of the simpler things the brain can do, like recognizing irony or feeling empathy. Claims of AGI's imminent arrival are based on statistical extrapolations — and wishful thinking. According to various benchmark tests, today's technologies are improving at a consistent rate in some notable areas, like math and computer programming. But these tests describe only a small part of what people can do.

Humans know how to deal with a chaotic and constantly changing world. Machines struggle to master the unexpected — the challenges, small and large, that do not look like what has happened in the past. Humans can dream up ideas that the world has never seen. Machines typically repeat or enhance what they have seen before. That is why Frosst and other sceptics say pushing machines to human-level intelligence will require at least one big idea that the world's technologists have not yet dreamed up. There is no way of knowing how long that will take. "A system that's better than humans in one way will not necessarily be better in other ways," Harvard University cognitive scientist Steven Pinker said. "There's just no such thing as an automatic, omniscient, omnipotent solver of every problem, including ones we haven't even thought of yet. There's a temptation to engage in a kind of magical thinking. But these systems are not miracles. They are very impressive gadgets."
While Google's AlphaGo could be humans in a game with "a small, limited set of rules," the article points out that tthe real world "is bounded only by the laws of physics. Modelling the entirety of the real world is well beyond today's machines, so how can anyone be sure that AGI — let alone superintelligence — is just around the corner?" And they offer this alternative perspective from Matteo Pasquinelli, a professor of the philosophy of science at Ca' Foscari University in Venice, Italy.
"AI needs us: living beings, producing constantly, feeding the machine. It needs the originality of our ideas and our lives."

We're only a few days into Diablo 4 Season 8, and Blizzard is already looking for players to test out Season 9
Blizzard will soon reveal what players can expect from Diablo 4's next season, which seems a little too early, but actually makes sense.

Blizzard has made something of a surprise announcement: the developer is almost ready to talk about Diablo 4’s next season. The fact that we’re getting information ahead of time isn’t surprising, it’s just how far off from the season it’s dropping that’s a little unusual.
Season 8: Belial’s Return is nowhere near over, but Blizzard has confirmed that it will soon be soliciting player feedback as part of the next season’s PTR.

The patch 2.3.0 PTRis close enough, it seems, that Blizzard wants to tell players what it’s planning to change, and how they can get involved. This next update is a major one, and will arrive with Season 9, not before.
Season 8: Belial’s Return arrived alongside patch 2.2.0, which had its own PTR in March, just a few weeks before the season kicked off for everyone in the live game. Likewise, the Season 9 PTR will show off patch 2.3.0 ahead of its launch, and Blizzard revealed that it’ll talk all about it in an upcoming Campfire Chat.
The developer livestream is scheduled for Thursday, May 22 at 11am PT, 2pm ET, 7pm UK. As you might expect, it will serve as a preview of what to expect from the PTR. The test will, yet again, only be available on PC through Battlenet.
Outside of the major changes arriving with 2.3.0, the show will also detail the Dungeon Escalation activity debuting with Season 9. You’ll be able to watch it live on Diablo’s official channels on Twitch, YouTube, Twitter, and TikTok.

Are you... enjoying the current season? | Image credit: Blizzard Entertainment.

Diablo 4 seasons typically run longer than the ones in most live games, but it does look like Season 8 will be shorter than usual. For one, the recently-published Diablo 4 roadmap shows Season 9 in the July-September section. Interestingly, Diablo 4 does not currently say when the current season will end in game, as we’ve come to expect.
However, the much derided Reliquaries battle pass system, which debuted with Season 8, does list the number of days left to acquire its contents. As of this writing, it suggests a July 1 start date for Season 9, which would line up with the roadmap.
This could explain why we’re getting news of next season’s PTR this early, but we also shouldn’t ignore how much Season 8 is being dragged through the mud by many in the Diablo 4 community. It’s clear Blizzard wants to shift player attention to something other than the current season, which no doubt contributed to the scheduling decision.

One last trailer for From the World of John Wick: Ballerina.

We're about three weeks out from the theatrical release of From the World of John Wick: Ballerina,  starring Ana de Armas.
So naturally Lionsgate has released one final trailer to whet audience appetites for what promises to be a fiery, action-packed addition to the hugely successful franchise.
(Some spoilers for 2019's John Wick Chapter 3: Parabellum.)
Chronologically, Ballerina takes place during the events of John Wick Chapter 3: Parabellum.
As previously reported, Parabellum found Wick declared excommunicado from the High Table for killing crime lord Santino D'Antonio on the grounds of the Continental.
On the run with a bounty on his head, he makes his way to the headquarters of the Ruska Roma crime syndicate, led by the Director (Anjelica Huston).
The Director also trains young girls to be ballerina-assassins, and one young ballerina (played by Unity Phelan) is shown rehearsing in the scene.
That dancer, Eve Macarro, is the main character in Ballerina, now played by de Armas.
Huston returns as the Director, Ian McShane is back as Winston, and Lance Reddick makes one final (posthumous) appearance as the Continental concierge, Charon.
New cast members include Gabriel Byrne as the main villain, the Chancellor, who turns an entire town against Eve; Sharon Duncan-Brewster as Nogi, Eve's mentor; Norman Reedus as Daniel Pine; and Catalina Sandino Moreno and David Castaneda in as-yet-undisclosed roles.
The first trailer was released last September and focused heavily on Eve's backstory: Having been orphaned, she chose to train with the Ruska Roma in hopes of avenging her father's brutal death.
Wick only made a brief appearance, but he had more screen time in the second trailer, released in March, in which the pair face off in an atmospheric wintry landscape.
This final trailer opens with Eve looking up while directly in Wick's crosshairs.
Much of the ensuing footage isn't new, but it does show de Armas to her best deadly advantage as she takes on combatant after combatant in true John Wick style.
Her vow: "This isn't done until they're dead."
From the World of John Wick: Ballerina hits theaters on June 6, 2025.

Ana de Armas is caught in Wick’s crosshairs in final Ballerina trailer
en pointe Ana de Armas is caught in Wick’s crosshairs in final Ballerina trailer "When you think of me, you should think of fire. Risen from ashes, again and again." We're about three weeks out from the theatrical release of From the World of John Wick: Ballerina,  starring Ana de Armas. So naturally Lionsgate has released one final trailer to whet audience appetites for what promises to be a fiery, action-packed addition to the hugely successful franchise. (Some spoilers for 2019's John Wick Chapter 3: Parabellum.) Chronologically, Ballerina takes place during the events of John Wick Chapter 3: Parabellum. Her vow: "This isn't done until they're dead." From the World of John Wick: Ballerina hits theaters on June 6, 2025.
