Fortnite is back in the US App Store. Epic CEO Tim Sweeney announced that he intended to relaunch the game in late April, following a court order that demanded Apple stop collecting a 27 percent fee on app transactions that happen outside of its in-app purchase system. The company finally amending its rules to remove that additional commission is why Epic moved forward with the relaunch. The origins of this conflict can be traced all the way back to 2020, when Epic added its own method for collecting payments for in-game items in Fortnite and encouraged players to circumvent Apple's system. Fortnite was removed from the App Store (and the Google Play Store for that matter), Epic sued and the rest is history.  Epic didn't win its entire case against Apple, but it did secure a permanent injunction allowing developers to include in-app text that makes users aware of payment options other than the App Store. According to the latest court order, Apple allowed that text, but was still demanding developers pay it a fee for those non-App Store transactions. That prompted the judge overseeing the companies' case to demand Apple stop and remove even more obstacles from the payment process. Companies like Spotify swiftly updated their apps to take advantage of Apple's rule change, with approved applications showing up in early May. In fact, Spotify managed to get a second update focused on Audiobooks approved before Epic was able to get Fortnite in the App Store. Today's news comes in the wake of a Judge ordering Apple on May 19 to either resolve the matter or have the "Apple official who is personally responsible" show up in court next week to explain why. Fortnite has technically been available on Apple devices in other ways for a while now, whether its through the Epic Game Store in the European Union, or game streaming services like Xbox Cloud Gaming and NVIDIA GeForce Now in the US. Returning to the App Store is a symbolic victory. The real prize are the court orders that came from Epic v. Behind REALTIME’s visual effects for ‘Lockerbie: A Search for Truth’. In Lockerbie: A Search for Truth, a Sky & Peacock Original limited series, we witness the demise of Pan Am Flight 103 over the Scottish town in 1988 after a terrorist bomb attack. Pieces of the exploded plane first fall onto the streets of the town, culminating in a massive ground fireball and crater as the main fuselage hits. These harrowing moments, and others in the film, were realized with the aid of visual effects from REALTIME, led by visual effects supervisor Sue Land. “The range of our work was quite wide,” Land tells befores & afters. “It went straight from full-on CG for replicating the incident, all the way through to the aftermath, and then courtroom scenes where we were reproducing environments and doing a little bit of greenscreen work.” To help visualize the locales of the series, including surrounding Lockerbie and General Muammar Gaddafi’s palace in Morocco, REALTIME developed a virtual production tool for scouting and previsualizing locations. “Our director Otto Bathurst came to us right at the very beginning of the project and said one of the things they were struggling with when they were looking for locations was actually visualizing where the town of Lockerbie would be in relationship to those locations,” says Land. “Because of some of the things people had to see, it was no good if the bit that you think should be there isn’t going to be there. He said, ‘Wouldn’t it be great if I could have something I could just run around and hold up and it shows me where it would be and that’s what it would look like.’” “So,” continues Land, “we started work on a virtual production tool with the idea of being able to achieve something like that. We managed to get something roughly working using Unreal Engine. We did that on a laptop, using an iPad as the camera. That could take any of the camera backs and lenses that our DP was going to use. We were running behind with a very big battery pack, which was hysterical, but it did prove that potentially this thing could work.” The first episode of the series sees the result of the bomb depicted first as a bunch of falling pieces of debris from the plane. “Our remit was, wherever possible it should be real,” recounts Land. “Obviously, dropping things comes with a load of issues. So our rule of thumb for every sequence was that if you see it falling, it’s CG. Once it’s on the floor, it’s real. We would film a scene without the piece in, then place it in the scene, and connect it with visual effects. Very often the piece would hit and we knew Otto would want to cut quite quickly because he wanted to give it impact. So, we knew we weren’t necessarily going to be lingering on a shot, you’re talking maybe 12 or 14 frames. That meant we knew that our things had to come down and lock into the ground. The process for that was to scan the objects beforehand.” For one moment in which a plane object hits a police car, the original intention was for that object to be a drinks or food trolley. “But,” says Land, “when we looked at the implosion that SFX had done, we realized that it was going to look a bit lame just putting the trolley on. So, at some very early time in the morning, we chose a piece that we thought would work instead. While we were carrying it into position, we were photographing it, we were very quickly scanning it to make sure we could put that piece on and we could make it as accurate as it needed to be.” A huge explosion marks the time that a large part of the crashing fuselage of the plane hits the ground and ultimately causes a massive crater to appear. The SFX team provided a large practical explosion at the shooting location. REALTIME’s FX team then replicated the explosion and added a number of elements to it, including providing what Land says were pieces that gave the fireball more dimension. “It can be strange how walls of flame to a degree suddenly flatten an image. We wanted to get that idea that if you were standing witness in this, at what point did you think you were safe and at what point would you not? So we wanted it to feel a little like it was coming towards you.” The aftermath of the crash involved seeing shots of the crater and a streetscape littered with debris. The art department dressed the set, with REALTIME fleshing out the environment further. “It was quite a sight to walk down that street when it was all dressed in,” remarks Land. “Initially we did think we might have to do some stuff deep in the background. In actual fact, by the time SFX had put all the smoke and everything in there, we had to do very little. Even in the aftermath when all the fire’s gone down, there wasn’t a huge amount we had to do. We did have to do quite a bit of clean-up for a drone shot because there was all the SFX rigging to take out, and the crater to put in. It’s always very difficult to make something look deep when you’re actually bird’s eye on it. This is why it was great having police cars and things like that, to help you with scale.” Lockerbie: A Search for Truth’s principal visual effects were in the crash moment and immediate aftermath, but a number of shots also included invisible effects, such as the decals on the Pan Am jetliner prior to take-off. “For the jet itself,” notes Land, “we were fortunate in the fact that we did get some reference of her at Heathrow Airport a few months before the disaster. The one we were filming with had been modified for a film previously. It actually had a pair of twin engines that were together rather than separated, and it had a pod on the end. So, we had to take those off for a start. Our saving grace was, it was white.” For Land, the series was a chance to help tell a powerful story with powerful, but also subtle, effects. “We set out to never be sensational,” she says. “I think we achieved that very well. It felt very grounded. We weren’t making something too overly and unnecessarily dramatic. Today’s U.S. farmers and agricultural businesses are navigating a complex landscape, with unique near-term and long-term challenges that include intensified global competition, record trade deficits, rising costs, and more frequent and extreme weather events.   These challenges have created economic instability across the entire agriculture sector with U.S. row crop farmer net income remaining persistently low for the third straight year. Estimates from the University of Illinois show that corn and soybean farmers could face a net loss of between $50 and $70 per acre this growing season. On top of this, global acreage has leveled off at 2.3 billion acres and the average yield for corn and soybeans has also slowed.  This uncertainty affects not only those who grow our food but also reverberates throughout the entire food system, threatening the stability we all depend on. It’s clear that our sector must get off unpredictable commodity rollercoaster and create a more predictable future for farm families, agricultural businesses, consumers, and communities.  Drawing on Land O’Lakes, Inc.’s 104 years of experience as a cooperative, we have learned that collaboration is crucial for bringing stability and predictability to the food and agriculture sectors. And it’s not enough to simply insulate your own business, we must think more collaboratively to identify solutions that serve partners up and down our value chains.  Inject predictability into our food system  To address the pressures facing American farmers, we must move beyond traditional methods and invest in modern technologies and data-driven solutions that provide detailed plans down to the acre and animal, help minimize risk to inject predictability into farm operations. By creating standardized, reliable, and secure datasets, the industry can provide insights that help farmers respond to environmental and market challenges, manage supply chains, and track production volumes with unprecedented precision.  As I look across this sector, I’m especially inspired by how Keystone Cooperative is working to drive predictability. This Indianapolis-based cooperative is using precise, field-level data to help growers respond to seasonal challenges and maximize their ROI by applying the right crop protection products at the right time and in a precise location.  For Land O’Lakes, data is the cornerstone of our innovation strategy. Through the WinField United Innovation Center, a leading agricultural applied research facility, we collect and analyze roughly six million data points annually to help farmers increase production, improve efficiency and optimize resource use. Those insights are then being delivered in a manner that reduces the risk farmers face each day. This includes low-interest financing, prescription programs with a performance warranty, and an AI assistant that provides real-time solutions to problems farmers encounter throughout the growing season.  The power of the cooperative mindset  In an era where traditional business models often prioritize short-term profits over long-term resilience, the cooperative model offers a compelling alternative. I grew up playing arcade games that essentially helped shape the evolution of the gaming industry. Like many millennials, I also spent countless hours of my adolescence, immersed in the pixelated worlds of Super Mario, Contra, Tank Battle, Road Fighter, and Double Dragon. While, Road Fighter was easily the biggest gobbler of my time and money (had to visit game parlors after school to fight it out with friends and strangers), I also dedicated a lot of time navigating the challenging countdown of the Excitebike, which was a welcome break: it was easy on the mind and perfect for winding down from the wigwagging of the car frenzy. The 2D dirt bike racing game on the Nintendo Entertainment System was my first real taste of virtual bike racing, which later transpired into the arcade games controlled by motorbikes. But frankly, the former had its own charm, and the moment I saw this LEGO iteration of the game on the Brick Slopes Denver 2025, it was an instant hit with me, like it is with the thousands of fans going bonkers about the idea on social media. So, what’s it all about? Designer: LEGO Ideas LEGO Ideas is a platform where amazing brickwork comes to life that translates into our lives with the help of fan love. The Excitebike Playable Arcade – a real-life, miniature arcade machine built with a controllable Excitebike game – is longing for some love. Made entirely of LEGO bricks, of course, this idea is really intuitive and fluid. The impressive build really deserves the backing to be turned into a real LEGO set; you and I can make it at home at our convenience to relive the bygone era. Bringing Excitebike out of the pixelated gameplay to a controllable brick-built arcade, the classic NES motocross game is fully controllable and lets the player rejoice in the bike stunts. “You’ll be able to catch air, pop wheelies, change lanes, and even do flips as you speed down the motorized scrolling track,” the description by the creator on LEGO Ideas reads. Launched under the Nintendo franchise in 1985, the Excitebike was a motocross racing video game wherein you could race both – on your own or against the competitors – but the real competition was always against the ticking clock, which defined the position you were awarded. In between, the bike went up and down the obstacles as you steered it between lanes; the same gameplay has been recreated on the LEGO arcade Excitebike. The fully playable arcade game lets you guide the bike between lanes and navigate jumps of various sizes, evoking the nostalgia of the retro game in millennials and the younger generation (who never tasted the love of arcade) alike. Interestingly, the LEGO arcade allows you to design your own race course as well, like in the real game. Macworld Throughout its history, Apple has introduced many industry-changing technologies, some of which are still present in today’s devices, like MagSafe on MacBooks. However, some of the technologies introduced by Apple have been discontinued over time for different reasons. While most of these decisions are understandable, some technologies were ahead of their time, and I really miss them today. Let’s look back at some of Apple’s best ideas that were discontinued but ahead of their time and deserve to come back. 3D Touch Although 3D Touch was first introduced with the original Apple Watch as “Force Touch,” Apple later added it to the iPhone. I remember seeing the iPhone 6s introduction video in 2015 with Jony Ive explaining how 3D Touch worked, and it sounded impressive. Indeed, it was. Essentially, Apple put pressure sensors under the iPhone’s screen so that it could distinguish a soft press from a hard press with extreme precision. 3D Touch could be used in many ways, such as pressing harder on an icon to reveal more options or gently pressing a link on a webpage to see a preview of it. Game developers could also adopt 3D Touch for custom controls. You can still perform the 3D Touch action on today’s iPhones, but the result is different.Filipe Esposito The technology blew my mind, and I loved how precise it was. Not only that, but 3D Touch worked very well with the iPhone’s haptic feedback. It was so satisfying. But in practice, only a few apps added support for 3D Touch, and it was a very complex and expensive technology to build. Apple ended up discontinuing 3D Touch, starting with the iPhone XR, and replaced some of the actions with a simple long press on the screen. I still dream of future iPhones having 3D Touch back. Luckily, the trackpads on MacBooks still have Force Touch, so that’s something. AirPort AirPort was Apple’s lineup of wireless routers. First introduced in 1999, AirPort devices always had a futuristic design and made it easy for users to plug in an internet cable and have a Wi-Fi connection at home. While the first version looked like a spaceship, one of the most interesting versions of the AirPort was the model that looked like a giant MacBook charger that had an ethernet port on it. There was also the sleek and modern AirPort Extreme, which was essentially a mini-tower made of polished white plastic. That thing was beautiful. The AirPort line once had a tower form factor (left) and a design that was like a MacBook power adapter (left).Apple Apple’s AirPorts gained many cool features over time. For example, you could plug a USB stick, printer, or external hard drive into it, and all your Apple devices would have wireless access to it. It could also turn wired sound systems into AirPlay speakers. AirPort also resulted in another product called Time Capsule, which had an internal hard drive to wirelessly back up your Mac. Apple stopped selling AirPorts in 2018, and while rumors suggest that Apple has no plans to introduce another Wi-Fi router anytime soon, the company has reportedly been exploring the idea of making Apple TVs and HomePods work as Wi-Fi signal extenders. I really hope that’s true. iPod A lot has changed since Apple introduced the first iPod in 2001. iPod wasn’t just a good product, it also made anyone using it look cool. I remember upgrading from a Discman to an iPod, and I felt like I was in the future. “A thousand songs in your pocket,” as Apple’s slogan went. The third-generation iPod nano. Filipe Esposito There have been many different versions of the iPod over the years, including the iPod touch, but the most iconic ones will always be the iPods with a Click Wheel. There was a unique and satisfying feeling in turning your finger on that wheel to navigate the interface. It was unlike anything else at the time. And although the product was once a hit, it ended up losing the battle to smartphones. Apple knew this, which is why the company has always promoted the iPhone as “the best iPod ever.” Suddenly, our phones could also work as great iPods, so having a dedicated music player no longer made sense for most people. Apple stopped selling the iPod shuffle and iPod nano in 2017, while the iPod touch remained in the lineup until 2022. The company said at the time that the iPod still lives on in its other products, and that’s true. Thanks to the iPod, we now have the iPhone, AirPods, and the HomePod. While some people are nostalgic about the iPod and want it back, I really believe that it served its purpose and that there are better alternatives now, like using an Apple Watch with AirPods if you want to listen to music without having your phone nearby. Cover Flow How could I forget Cover Flow? The cool iPod interface that lets users explore their music library by its art covers? Interestingly, Cover Flow was created by a third-party developer, and the idea was so good that Apple acquired it to implement it in iTunes. The feature was eventually added to the iPod, iPhone, and even Finder on the Mac to browse files with large previews. I remember using the original iPod touch for the first time, rotating the screen with the Music app open, and seeing the Cover Flow interface. That was probably the moment I fell in love with that product. Cover Flow on an iPod touch.Filipe Esposito Cover Flow went away with iOS 7, when Apple completely redesigned the iPhone’s operating system in favor of a flat-design interface with less skeuomorphism. But Apple should bring Cover Flow back. It would be a good feature to reintroduce with iOS 19, as the company is rumored to be changing the user interface all over again. Front Row Similar to Cover Flow, Front Row was an interface that Apple created to use the Mac as a multimedia center. The app made it easier to navigate between the user’s music, videos, and photos. The experience of using Front Row was really cool, especially when the Mac was connected to a big monitor or TV. With Front Row, it was easy to imagine what a multimedia device (like a DVD player) from Apple would look like. Apple never launched a DVD player, but it did announce the first Apple TV in 2007–it had the same interface as Front Row, but now in a standalone device. Front Row was later removed from the Mac, probably because Apple wants you to buy an Apple TV instead. Still, I miss Front Row, especially now with Apple Music and Apple TV+. Front Row provided an easy-to-use interface for using your Mac as an entertainment center.Apple iSight camera Pretty much every Apple device today has a built-in front-facing camera, but there was a time when that wasn’t a thing, and Apple had to create its own webcam for the Mac. Called iSight, Apple’s webcam had a beautiful design for its time (which still looks modern). It was definitely something you’d look at and think, “that’s an Apple product.” The iSight had decent specs for a 2003 webcam, with a three-element lens with autofocus and 480p resolution at 30fps. It also had built-in microphones with noise cancellation and a cool way to cover the lens for better privacy. We now have 1080p and even 4K webcams built into our devices, but there’s still a market for external webcams with larger sensors and better microphones for those who videoconference every day. Although this would be very niche, I would like to see Apple reintroduce iSight with a large 4K sensor for vloggers. Unfortunately, this seems quite unlikely to happen since Apple itself has released a feature that lets users turn their iPhone into a webcam for their Mac or Apple TV. The iSight webcam design would look great in today’s Apple lineup.Christopher Phin Back to the future Apple is known for not reviving things from the past very often, even when it’s something its users really love. Still, we can dream of some of these things coming back in the future–just look at MagSafe, which was removed from MacBooks and then added back years later. And even though some of these technologies may not seem relevant these days, they certainly contributed to improving the Apple ecosystem at the time.
