• Decoding NVIDIA Edify The Technology That Helps Developers Create Custom Models Trained on Their Data
    blogs.nvidia.com
Editors note: This post is part of the AI Decoded series, which demystifies AI by making the technology more accessible, and showcases new hardware, software, tools and accelerations for RTX PC users.Content generators whether producing language, 2D images, 3D models or videos are giving the creative community tools that bring visions to life faster. To help developers build these new generative AI tools, NVIDIA has set up NVIDIA AI Foundry. It helps companies train generative AI models on their own licensed data using NVIDIA Edify, a multimodal AI architecture that can use simple text prompts to generate images, videos, 3D assets, 360-degree high-dynamic-range imaging and physically based rendering (PBR) materials. Using AI Foundry, companies can train bespoke AI models to generate any of these assets.Key elements of Edify include its ability to generate multiple types of content, its superior training efficiency, which allows it to produce high-quality content while trained on fewer images, and its ability to fine-tune models to style-match or learn characters or objects. One of the best examples of services built on NVIDIA AI Foundry and Edify is Generative AI by Getty Images, a commercially safe generative photography service. The combination of AI Foundry and Edify allows users to control their training datasets, so they can create models that fit their need.To avoid copyright issues, Getty Images used Edify to train the service on its own licensed content, ensuring that no famous characters or products are in the dataset. The company also shares part of the profits with the contributors, driving a new revenue stream for creators who contribute to the model.Asset Generation With EdifyEdify can be trained to generate a variety of image types, including images, 3D assets and 360-degree HDRi environment maps.Edify Image can generate four high-quality 1K images in around six seconds, doubling the performance of the previous model. Images can also be converted to 4K with a generative upscaler that adds additional details.Getty Images 4K image generation trained on NVIDIA Edify using commercially safe creative libraries.Images are highly controllable thanks to advanced prompt adherence, camera controls to specify focal length or depth of field, and ControlNets to guide the generation. The ControlNets include Sketch, which allows users to provide a sketch to follow or copy the composition of an image, and Depth, to copy the composition of an image.Images can also be edited with Edify Image. InPaint allows users to add or modify content in an image. Replace a strict InPaint can change details such as clothing. And OutPaint can expand an image to match different aspect ratios. And all of this is simplified with Segment, a feature that can mask objects with just a text prompt.Edify can also create artist-ready 3D meshes. The meshes come with clean quads-based topology, up to 4K PBR materials and automatic UV mapping for easier texture editing. A fast preview mode provides results in as few as 10 seconds, which can then be turned into a full 3D mesh.Meshes are perfect for prototyping scenes, generating background objects for set decoration or as a head start for 3D sculpting.Edify 360 HDRi generates environment maps of natural landscapes that can be used to light a scene, for reflections and even as a background. The model can generate up to 16K HDRi images from text or image prompts. With a desired backplate in hand, users can create a custom HDRi to match instead of spending hours looking for one.High dynamic range, 360-degree panoramas from text prompts.Edifys multimodal capability is unique, enabling advanced workflows that combine different asset types. Used together with an agent, for instance, Edify allows users to prototype a full scene in a couple of minutes with a simple text prompt like in the NVIDIA Research SIGGRAPH demo that showcased the assistive 3D world-building capabilities of NVIDIA Edify-powered models and the NVIDIA Omniverse platform.Another use case is to combine Edify 3D and 360 HDRi with Image to give users full control of image generation. By generating the scene in 3D, artists can move objects around and frame their desired shot and then use Edify Image to turn the prototype into a photorealistic image.Generative AI by Getty ImagesGetty Images is one of the largest content service providers and suppliers of creative visuals, editorial photography, video and music and is the one of the first places people turn to discover, purchase and share powerful visual content from the worlds best photographers and videographers.Getty Images used NVIDIA AI Foundry to train an NVIDIA Edify Image model to power its generative AI service. Available through Generative AI by Getty Images for enterprises and Generative AI by iStock for small businesses and amateur creators, the service allows users to generate and modify images using models powered by NVIDIA Edify.Generative AI by Getty Images (or iStock) offers a variety of licensed content.Getty Images and iStock recently updated to the latest version of Edify Image, enabling faster generations and higher prompt adherence and exposing Camera Controls.Updated camera controls in Generative AI by Getty Images.Users can now also use the generative AI tools on preshot creative content, allowing them to edit and modify iStocks library of visuals to rapidly iterate and perfect content. Those same capabilities will be soon available on Gettyimages.com.Test drive Generative AI by Getty Images on ai.nvidia.com.Generative AI is transforming gaming, videoconferencing and interactive experiences of all kinds. • Alien: Romulus is an imperfect organism spliced together from the franchises best
    www.polygon.com
Ask five different Alien fans what their favorite movies from the franchise are and why they love them, and youll likely get five different answers. Still, it all but goes without saying that every subsequent entry in the series gets measured by its level of similarity to one of two films: Ridley Scotts 1979 original and James Camerons 1986 sequel Aliens. In Alien: Romulus, the latest installment in the series, writer-director Fede lvarez and frequent co-writer Rodo Sayagues (Dont Breathe) wear their love of Scotts and Camerons films as proudly as any fans of the franchise would, to the films visual merit and narrative detriment.Set 20 years after the events of Alien, lvarezs film centers on Rain Carradine (Civil Wars Cailee Spaeny), an orphan living on Jacksons Star, a mining colony light-years away from Earth thats shrouded in an unending dark storm. Her mother and father are dead; her only companion is Andy (David Jonsson), a malfunctioning synthetic android she cares for as a surrogate sibling. Desperate for a means to escape the colony and the grasp of the Weyland-Yutani corporation, the Alien franchises true central villain Rain agrees to join a group of friends as they break into a derelict station thats drifted into their planets orbit. What they find aboard is not salvation, but a threat beyond their wildest imagination. Is it as good as Alien or Aliens? is the obvious question franchise fans will ask when weighing whether to see Alien: Romulus. lvarez and Sayagues seem to have been uncomfortably aware that this question was coming. They anticipated those five different answers about what Alien fans love from the previous films, and tried to split the difference between all of them and more. Like the Romulus and Remus stations, which serve as the films setting, Alien: Romulus is made up of roughly two parts: a haunted-house story in outer space la Alien, and a crowd-pleasing horror-action spectacle like Aliens. The former element is stronger than the latter in this case, and the imbalance is one of the reasons Alien: Romulus feels like a by-the-numbers retread of the franchise defining it, rather than the resuscitative breath it so desperately needs. There are gratifying aspects to this movie: Alien: Romulus set and production design easily place it as one of the most visually impressive sci-fi movies to come out this year, fastidiously replicating the cassette futurism and tactility of Scotts original film while introducing new technology that still feels like it fits in the setting. Benjamin Wallfischs score is another high point, echoing Jerry Goldsmiths iconic orchestral music from Alien while introducing discordant, abrasive notes of industrial sound when shit really hits the fan.Spaeny and Jonsson inarguably deliver the strongest performances in the films ensemble. Rain is obviously coded as Alien: Romulus answer to Ellen Ripley, though shes far from a one-to-one facsimile of Sigourney Weavers character. Rain isnt a hardened space trucker with a do-or-die knack for survivalism, shes a scared young woman trying to claw her way out from under the crushing weight of corporate debt bondage. When her love for Andy is pitted against her chance to leave Jacksons Star, she has to weigh the consequences of that fateful decision along with the moment-to-moment choices that mean the difference between her survival and certain death. Shes trying to make the best of a shitty situation that only gets worse as more and more of her friends die. And the only way out of hell is to go through it and come out the other side.Jonssons turn as Andy is one of the most affecting performances in the entire film. Andy isnt Alien: Romulus answer to Ash, the first Aliens android science officer turned antagonist. Hes more like a mirror reflection of Michael Fassbenders David from Prometheus and Alien: Covenant, if someone had ever bothered to teach him love or anything, for that matter, apart from deference to his creator and Weyland-Yutanis goals.Just as Rain has to decide whether to leave without Andy, he faces the choice of abandoning Rain and her friends in service of the Companys interest in the Xenomorph, or fighting for their survival, while knowing they very well might not do the same for him. The answer he lands on, while predictable, speaks volumes about his resolve and strength of character in the face of both overwhelming terror and the inner moral battle raging between his better angels and his company programming. How do you make the Xenomorph scary again after so many movie outings, all copying the original two films? In the case of Alien: Romulus, the answer is simple: You dont. lvarez never fully nails how to make the franchise-defining aliens feel threatening in a way that moviegoers havent already seen in the past 40 years. Despite some cross-species evolutionary chicanery in the films final act, Alien: Romulus never brings forward its own answer for why audiences should fear this incarnation of the creature, as opposed to any other previous iteration from the franchise. Some inventive sequences make use of Xenomorphs in entertaining ways, including one standout scene featuring zero gravity. But this isnt a movie that depicts the franchises most iconic monster as a singular, inscrutable, acid-spewing apex predator its just a swarm of colonial marine rifle-fodder.For those worried that Alien: Romulus might skirt around the psychosexual imagery the franchises earliest entries were known for, dont worry; its present here, though in short supply. We literally see a character stab an electric stun prod into an unambiguously vaginal cocoon before facing what can only be described as a clitoral talon. Later, as acid seeps from a cocoons mouth down onto a victims writhing body, a Xenomorph stirs from its gestation, shucking its amniotic carapace like an erect penis protruding from the folds of its foreskin. Dont look at me like that: This is another H.R. Giger-derived film, after all.Fede lvarez and co. spliced together DNA from the original Alien, Camerons sequel, and Scotts more recent prequel films to see if something new could be born out of them but they dont introduce any new genetic material of their own. The result is a technically impressive but narratively rote horror thriller that leaps at every opportunity to ape its forebears, while curiously contributing very little of its own to that legacy. Thats fine if youre looking to re-experience a couple of your old favorite scares with a brand-new coat of paint slapped on them. But for everyone else, Alien: Romulus is a serviceable yet underwhelming entry in a franchise thats otherwise known for its relentless evolution.Alien: Romulus debuts in theaters on Aug. 16.

  • A Coca-Cola Office in Poland Celebrates the Companys Iconic Brands
    design-milk.com
An office park in Warsaw, Poland houses the vibrant Coca-Cola HBC headquarters, designed by studio BIT CREATIVE. The eclectic mix of interiors celebrate the iconic companys beverage brands, replete with the iconography and signature colors that are instantly recognizable around the globe. The headquarters boasts more than 59,000 square feet spread over three floors, housing up to 500 employees. Materials like oak wood and felt are paired with the rough brick and concrete, which softens the look of the industrial building. Yet for the designers, the manufacturers own fizzy color palettes were key to enhancing the overall look of the corporate space.Coca-Colas red and white label was the logical starting point because of the familiar elements. However, the team was hesitant to blanket the space in the crimson hue, which can be perceived as harsh or aggressive, especially in a busy workplace. We wanted to play with these details without overwhelming the employees, says Jakub Bubel, an architect at BIT CREATIVE. The wave of the logo allowed us to reference this brand and drink that everybody knows, in a delicate way.The architects also drew inspiration from the silhouette and the container itself. Filled bottles, for example, are embedded in the reception desk, and cabinets feature bottle-shaped handles. Other components of glass or plastic are often discarded, so they decided instead to incorporate them in creative ways a win for people and the planet. The classic glass versions were made into light fixtures throughout the office. Everyday aluminum bottle caps, transformed into wall features and signage, add a whimsical touch. It was a challenge to achieve the right balance in such an expansive, open-plan office. The goal was to create a welcoming environment, while reducing noise and maintaining privacy. Workstations are configured for a maximum of 12 people, fitted with simple partitions. Booths are the most popular furnishings with the employees, available in a variety of sizes. The larger structures clad with wood slats are called cottages. These spots allow individuals to enjoy quiet time during the busy workday. There is no shortage of casual zones designed to promote relaxation and fun, too. Swings made of rope and wood planks are clustered near moss walls, bringing much needed greenery indoors. The kitchens on every floor (stocked with plenty of the companys drinks) also have dining areas that double as places where people are encouraged to share a meal or touch base with co-workers.The meeting rooms are the true highlight, each one decorated to reflect a particular brand. The Sprite room is decorated in citrusy, effervescent shades of lemon and lime. The Monster room, named after the energy drink, pulses with neon green racing stripes. Photos of skateboarders and BMX racers line the walls, and the showpiece table has two gleaming engines as a base. And the AdeZ room has a table attached to the ceiling. Corresponding images and shapes evoke beverages of choice in unique settings. Whenever you are in the office, you feel the Coca-Cola, happy spirit, Bubel notes. To learn more more about this and other projects by BIT CREATIVE visit bitcreative.info.Photography by BIT CREATIVE.

  • Craving convenience: the psychology behind fast food kiosks
    uxdesign.cc
Whilst tapping into our psychological need for autonomy and instant gratification, the UX design of fast food kiosks is shaping the industry and driving consumer behaviour.AI-generated image fromCanvaFast food self-service kiosks have revolutionised the modern dining experience, with more and more chains adopting them in-store. McDonalds has installed over 70,000 self-service units worldwide, leading the way for the growing trend. Kiosks allow for a fully independent ordering experience, from selection to payment. The COVID-19 pandemic further accelerated the adoption of such technologies, as the restaurant industry faced staffing shortages, social distancing requirements and extended closures. As the demand for technology increasesand the desire for human interaction in such contexts decreasesthe self-serve kiosk market is projected to reach $30.8 billion in revenue by2024.When employees are removed from the ordering process, restaurants are essentially expecting the customer to take on a greater share of the work. So, the UX design of the technology used to order matters a lot. These digital order-takers have infiltrated restaurants worldwide, promising speed, convenience, and personalisation by collecting critical customer data. But what drives us to interact with these machines rather than human cashiers? Lets explore the consumer and social psychology behind this shift and how UX design has leveraged such principles. The illusion ofcontrolAs humans, we have a fundamental psychological need for perceived control of our environment. Fast food self-service kiosks have expertly capitalised on this innate human drive, granting customers an unprecedented level of autonomy in the ordering process. Having a sense of control is an adaptive behaviour that drives us to face our next challenge, where an element of choice allows us to achieve desirable outcomes and avoid undesirable ones. Research has found that humans demonstrate a preference for choice over non-choice, even when that choice affords no improvement in the outcome. By transferring the power of decision-making from a human cashier to a digital interface, kiosks create this illusion ofcontrol.Customers can independently navigate menus, customise orders, and select payment options at their own pace. No pressure. Their design allows them to explore menu items visually, add or remove ingredients, and adjust order quantities, empowering customers to create their ideal meal. This perceived autonomy can be highly satisfying, as it aligns with the critical UX principle of personalisation. These strategies not only enhance user satisfaction but also strengthen brand loyalty by demonstrating a deep understanding of individual preferences.Speed and efficiencyWe also have a desire for instant gratification, craving quick rewards and efficient processes. The rise of fast food itself directly correlates with this inclination, and self-service kiosks have amplified this trend. By eliminating the need for human interaction at the point of sale, kiosks significantly reduce wait times, catering to the modern consumers demand for speed. Long waiting times can create profit losses, where research has found that a seven-second reduction in service times in fast food restaurants can increase the companys market share by 1% to 3%. To ensure wait times stay down and the objectives of speed and efficiency are met, the UX design of the kiosk must be both intuitive and accessible.Kiosk designhurdlesPoorly designed kiosks can lead to several negative consequences, such as customer frustration, increased waiting times, the need for human assistance and negative word-of-mouth. By understanding these potential issues, restaurants and businesses can invest in well-designed kiosks that enhance the customer experience, strengthen brand loyalty and further driverevenue.Overwhelming menuoptionsAs discussed, we like to have choices. But, too many choices can paralyse customers and lead to decision fatigue, which in turn slows down the ordering process, leading to longer queues and dissatisfied customers. This concept is known as the paradox of choice, introduced by psychologist Barry Schwartz, which suggests that an abundance of options can lead to one feeling overwhelmed, stressed and anxious, with an overall decrease in satisfaction. This occurs as having too many choices requires more cognitive effort, so the aim of the design must be to simplify the decision-making process for the customer. You dont want to deprive the customer of choice, as this has been linked to dissatisfactionbut you need to present their options less overwhelmingly.A Burger King kiosk redesign by Flying Bisons. Despite highlighting two bestsellers, there is still an abundance of options on one screen, resulting in a packed interface where the items already in the cart are also notvisible. An innovative solution for this may be through using dynamic menus that change with the date, time and season, trying to predict what users may want to select from first before they navigate into the full menu of endless options. The choice is still there, but the system first tries to guess what items the user may want to choose, based on the behaviour ofothers.A McDonalds kiosk redesign by Cuberto, making use of visual hierarchy and a popular section. The design is minimalistic yet informative, with all items in the cart visible in thesidebar.More common solutions that we see include categorising items; using visual hierarchy to guide customers through the menu with varying font sizes, bold text and images; and revealing more menu options as customers make selections, focusing attention on relevantchoices.A McDonalds kiosk redesign by Chee Seng Leong using progressive disclosure to ensure the customer is not overwhelmed with overly similar choices on the main page. It also integrates a search bar, improving speed and efficiency for when a customer already has an item inmind.Poor UXwritingClear and concise information is essential for a positive kiosk experience. Unclear error messages can leave customers feeling lost and helpless when encountering issues. For example, a generic error occurred message does not guide the customer on how to resolve the problem. Clear and specific error messages, such as invalid payment method or item currently unavailable, can help customers understand the issue and take appropriate action, avoiding interference from an employee which would further delay the order process. A lack of detailed product information can also deter customers from making informed choices. Essential details like ingredients, allergens, nutritional values, and prices should be readily available.Examples of good UX writing for a broken terminal and completing anorder.Additionally, complex or lengthy payment processes can frustrate users and lead to abandoned orders altogether. According to a 2019 report, 97% of consumers will back out of their purchase decision if they face inconvenience in making that purchase. Multiple payment options should be offered, and the checkout process should be streamlined to minimise steps. Clear instructions and progress indicators can help guide customers through the payment process, both self-sufficient and satisfied.Inclusivity and accessibilityUnfortunately, for people with disabilities, the design of many kiosks can present accessibility barriers. According to the Bureau of Internet Accessibility, kiosks need to accommodate a wide range of conditions, including mobility limitations, neurocognitive conditions, vision disabilities, hearing disabilities, learning disabilities, and speech or language impairments. In 2020, Colorado Springs introduced its Kiosk Accessibility Standards, which are a great starting point for designers and developers alike, to create universally accessible kiosks. Some of their criteria include having a mode that doesnt require user vision; one that doesnt require auditory perception; one that is operable with little or no colour perception; and minimises the cognitive, memory, language, and learning skills required of theuser.McDonalds Korea has introduced kiosks with new keypads and headphone jacks, through which visually impaired users can connect their headphones and browse the menu(source)Cultural considerationsIf Duolingo hasnt taught you how to order a cheeseburger yet, fear not. As we live in increasingly multicultural societies, another benefit of self-service kiosks is their ability to provide multilingual support. By offering user interfaces in multiple languages, kiosks can break down language barriers and enhance accessibility for customers from diverse backgrounds. This inclusive approach fosters a more welcoming environment, contributing to increased customer satisfaction.Language options on McDonalds kiosk in the UK(source)The digital divide: avoiding social interactionFor individuals who experience social anxiety or those who simply prefer to avoid human interaction in such contexts, self-service technologies offer a great alternative. Whilst social anxiety is characterised by excessive fear or anxiety in social situations, a growing number of particularly younger generations report discomfort when ordering food. A 2023 survey of Americans has found that 30% reported experiencing menu anxiety, defined by distress when ordering a meal at a restaurant. Interestingly, this menu paralysis may be linked to menu complexity and the previously mentioned overwhelming element of choice we are faced with in the information age. Kiosks provide a perfect solution for this, particularly as the majority of those suffering from such specific contextual social anxiety are Gen Z and Millenials, who are highly technologically fluent and willing to adopt new technologies. Already 86% of Gen Z consumers agree that technology is essential to their lives, so whats the adaptation of technology in restaurants, right? If it means I can keep my headphones on whilst ordering, sign meup. However, with more responsibility on the customer also comes other forms of anxiety. A recent study found that when in a busy restaurant with visible long waiting lines, customers experience more stress when using self-service kiosks, and even order less food or stick to familiar menu items. This increased pressure is linked to the lack of a human employee, who would usually take the fall for any increased ordertimes. When youre working with a human employee to place your order and theres a service mishap or delay, you can attribute that fault to the employee. The customer is not responsible for that experience, because there is a conscious human employee there. But when self-service technology is used for placing an order, more of that responsibility is shifted to the customer. This is especially true when there is a waitingline. When restaurants are empty, customers may spend more time searching through menu options and even taking their time, leaving them feeling a sense of autonomy over their order. But add an angry line of customers into the mix, and suddenly the self-service system becomes a frustrating fumble of aimless clicks, making the experience stressful and unsatisfying. The dark side of convenienceAI-generated image fromCanvaWhile self-service kiosks offer undeniable advantages in terms of speed and efficiency, they also come with a dark side. One of the most significant concerns is the impact on consumer behaviour. McDonalds customers spend 30% more at kiosks than at the counter or drive-thru window. why is this? When customers are presented with options rapidly, they have less time to consider their purchases, potentially leading to unplanned spending.Do you want fries with that? Impulse spending and upsellingA self-service kiosk will never miss an opportunity to upsell, unlike the teenage employee who just started last week. Kiosks are designed to maximise sales through strategic product placement and upselling tactics. By removing the social element of the transaction, customers may be more susceptible to impulse buying. Moreover, the absence of human interaction can reduce the opportunity for customers to seek advice or question purchase decisions.A fun example of personalised upselling by Ribot in a redesign of the KFCkiosk. The power of touch(screen)The more direct and interactive the experience, the more likely customers are to engage and purchase. When you touch things in store you are more likely to buy them. Now, this digital realm offers an opportunity to replicate this sensory experience. Touchscreens, with their tactile feedback, can enhance product engagement and result in feelings of joy, pleasure, and ownership. This direct touch effect helps to facilitate this ownership, which in turn triggers a desire to purchase. Overall, touchscreens create a more immersive and engaging shopping experience, which can lead to increased product consideration, impulse buying, and ultimately, highersales. The takeawaysFast food self-service kiosks have fundamentally reshaped the modern dining experience, capitalising on our innate desire for control, speed, and independence. By understanding the psychological drivers behind kiosk usage and prioritising user experience, fast food chains can create efficient, engaging, and inclusive self-service environments. • The FTC finalizes its rules clamping down on fake online reviews
    www.engadget.com
The Federal Trade Commissions (FTC) crackdown on fabricated reviews and fake consumer and celebrity testimonials has produced new official federal regulations to prevent the use of these practices on websites and e-commerce hubs. The FTC approved the new rules against the buying and selling of fake reviews and product testimonials with a 5-0 vote on Wednesday. The rules will become effective in 60 days. The new FTC rules address the practice of buying and selling fake consumer reviews, including the use of AI-generated consumer and celebrity testimonials for products or services. They also prevent providing compensation or other incentives conditioned on the writing of consumer reviews expressing a particular sentiment, either positive or negative and prohibit a business from misrepresenting that a website or entity it controls provides independent reviews or opinions about products or services, according to a statement released by the FTC.The formal ban also comes with stiff penalties for violators of the new rules. Fines could reach as high as $50,000 per violation. The FTC officially announced its intent to seek new rules for such practices last October. The Commission has been trying to get control of fake online reviews and testimonials for years. The first such case was resolved in 2019 against the Amazon seller Cure Encapsulations Inc. The company was accused of paying for fake feedback for its weight-loss products from the amazonvierifiedreviews.com website, and the FTC slapped them with a $12.8 million fine. The FTC has also investigated similar cases against the supplement maker The Bountiful Company for review hijacking its products reviews and ratings on Amazon that ended with a $600,000 fine, and the skincare maker Sunday Riley that created fake online reviews by ordering employees to write them. The government isnt the only entity trying to discourage the buying and selling of fake reviews. The service recommendation website Yelp created a database that lists businesses who received warnings for posting or buying fake reviews for its Yelp page. This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/general/the-ftc-finalizes-its-rules-clamping-down-on-fake-online-reviews-191339646.html?src=rss
