Buying a souls-like on sale but after the nerfs?www.resetera.comOGlolMemberJun 4, 20181,879Just curious what people think about this. I've noticed a trend where a lot of newer souls-like games get post-launch balance patches that tone down some of the tougher bosses based on player feedback. If I buy a game on sale months later, am I basically getting the "easier" version of what earlier players struggled through? Ry.AVALANCHEMemberOct 10, 20213,362the planet ZebesAs someone who played Lies of P and about half of Berserker Khazan before the nerfs happened, No, you aren't missing out. The nerfs made to those two made a lot of sense to me, and were not very substantial regardless, but ended up making all the difference. Tedious turned into satisfaction. Personally it makes me want to wait until the balance patches occur. Generally devs want their game to feel cohesive and well crafted, and over-tuned boss battles aren't what they are going for. Both those games are still substantial challenges post balance patches.Agni KaiMemberNov 2, 20179,713EDIT: Nevermind. I misread the OP!araMemberOct 26, 201713,594I didn't know Lies of P got patches to make it a bit easier. I did a post-nerf boss people complained about a lot again recently and actually had a much harder time just because of my build choice. Basically it doesn't matter.Notable exceptions include fixing actual mistakes like the Elden Ring instant death dogs and total BS like launch DS1 curse.RavelleMemberOct 31, 201719,859I don't enjoy the Souls Games for the challenge or bang face against a wall bosses, I enjoy them because of the world, characters and spectacle boss fights, if I can get passed them in an evening instead of a week I'm happy.OstinattoMemberOct 30, 20172,815just play Soul level 1 TofdMemberJul 8, 2018693I guess? It's usually like one or two bosses that needed a nerf. Sometimes it's fun to have claimed victory before a nerf but most of the "it was harder before" stuff are just memes. Anyone seriously trying to shame someone for doing it "after the patch" isn't worth paying attention to. Plus in most Souls games you can adjust the difficulty based on your level and items, so just stay lower to mid level and you'll probably have a harder time than most. Or like in Elden Ring, don't use summons or ashes or whatever. If it's really that big of a deal to you, could always buy physical on console and disconnect from the internet so you don't get the patch. Play the true 1.0 experience. lolYam'sMemberOct 27, 20174,337You forget that those patches also brought nerfs to some weapons/magics/exploits that made the games easier. I wouldn't worry about it and just enjoy the games as they are.TuckMemberOct 25, 20173,910Usually the nerfs are to transform frustrating, annoying difficulty into fun, enjoyable difficulty. The Gold HawkMemberJan 30, 20195,554YorkshireOGlol said:If I buy a game on sale months later, am I basically getting the "easier" version of what earlier players struggled through?Click to expand...Click to shrink...Just because someone who came before you struggled doesn't mean that you should have to.Your gameplay experience should not be diminished by thinking that someone else fought an unpatched or badly balanced boss before you.Hell, those patches also removed a bunch of buffs and nerfed skills, weapons or summons. If it makes you feel better, you can think if it as you are now playing a harder version because of those nerfs or you are now playing a more refined version.TsakiMemberFeb 12, 2019272OGlol said:Just curious what people think about this. I love Souls games for solitary, moody exploration and exceptional level design. So if there is some change to the difficulty it doesn't really affect my enjoyment of the game. kakteenMemberApr 9, 2024799As someone who does not give a fuck about the challenge in souls games, even after patch it will be difficult.Z-BrownieMemberNov 6, 20174,270i think you're playing the "correct game". Just because they were harder it doesn't mean they were "right".DoguiMemberOct 28, 201710,587BrazilDon't think devs patch their games to just make them easier and that's it. It's always about a frustrating element that gets in the way of the fair challenge.Like in Lies of P, rolling after falling in the floor was a mechanic that's essential to surviving, but it was available in a skill tree rather than by default. People were just "Well, we recommend getting this skill first of all because it's essential" and devs noticed it would make more sense to turn it into a default thing. No game stop being challenging after a patch afaik. Some try harder may think it so but they are already a veteran used to suffering through it, while this is meant for the new player. For the game designer, the current version is always the right way to play it.AstralSphereMemberFeb 10, 202112,598It's such a silly thing that a very, very vocal minority cares about, and they only even notice because they saw patch notes. It's always minor changes that move it more in line with what the developer intended in the first place, with most changes done to fix genuine issues with a fight. The most well-known From examples being Radahn, Smelter, and Gaius, and all were significantly better fights post-patch, and guess what... still hard as fuck. They just weren't filled with as much unintended bullshit.cvbasMemberOct 25, 20174,988BrazilIn 95% of the cases it's not a big deal at all, but I do think some nerfs do make the experience worse for those who are playing it post-patch.Elden Ring's Starscourge Radahn is a big example, imo. The original fight felt much better.tonyhawkspotater2MemberNov 4, 2023604Those who play the game with post-launch nerfs cheat, not only the game, but themselves. They didn't grow. They didn't improve. They took a shortcut and gained nothing. They experienced a hollow victory. Nothing was risked and nothing was gained. It's sad that they don't know the difference. But seriously though, Elden Ring had bosses like pre-nerf Starscourge Radahn who was an absolute menace to the first playthrough.. but then in the late game you had things like Hoarfrost stomp that was ridiculously OP that it broke the game, not even mentioning Rivers of Blood. So while the adjustments might make the game easier, they can also make skills/bosses/etc. work like they were originally intended.penny toastMemberFeb 20, 2024880hey congratulations on beating radahn! Creators Voice blog: Hidetaka Miyazaki on The Duskbloodswww.resetera.com--RBeing sued right now, please help me find a lawyerMemberOct 25, 201715,141First off, please tell us what led to this title being developed for Nintendo Switch 2.A while back, we had the opportunity to meet with Nintendo to discuss ideas, and during this discussion, we presented a rough outline for The Duskbloods. It was still very bare-bones at the timemore a loose string of ideas than a proper presentation. The concept itself was different from anything we had done before, and Nintendo seemed very interested in helping make it a reality. So that's when the project kicked off.At first it was being worked on by a small team as a title for Nintendo Switch. However just as the game started to take shape, we were approached by Nintendo with talk of Switch 2, which led us to revamp our development path with this new hardware in mind.Click to expand...Click to shrink...Did you always have some desire to make a PvPvE type game?Yes, I've always found the PvPvE structure very interesting. It allows for a broad range of game-design ideas, while also letting us leverage our experience of designing challenging enemy encounters. As a side note, please allow me to address one thing. As previously mentioned, this is an online multiplayer title at its core, but this doesn't mean that we as a company have decided to shift to a more multiplayer-focused direction with titles going forward. The Nintendo Switch 2 version of Elden Ring was also announced, and we still intend to actively develop single player focused games such as this that embrace our more traditional style.Click to expand...Click to shrink...Please tell us about the game's characters and setting. The game's protagonists, or characters controlled by the player, are known as "Bloodsworn." The Bloodsworn are a group whose members have achieved super-human abilities through the power of special blood. As a general concept, they're similar to vampires, but they are not portrayed as the horrifying monsters you might associate with traditional vampirism. We tried to extract the sort of romantic aspects we found interesting from concepts such as vampires and "blood" and reinterpreted them as the Bloodsworn.Click to expand...Click to shrink...In The Duskbloods, the Bloodsworn are competing for something known as "First Blood." As human society reaches an end, First Blood flows in an event known as the "Twilight of Humanity." The Bloodsworn are summoned to the Twilight of Humanity across a variety of different times and places in a bid to obtain First Blood.Due to this, there is no fixed era or location in which The Duskbloods takes place. There are more traditional Gothic- or Victorian-style maps as well as those depicting the closing years of the early modern period, like the one glimpsed in the trailer with the train running through it.Click to expand...Click to shrink...Earlier you referred to "protagonists" or "characters" as plural. Does this mean the player will be able to choose from multiple different characters?Yes, there are over a dozen characters for the player to choose from, each with their own identity and appearance. I think there are a lot of unique elements to the character designs and the weapons they use, so hopefully players can find one or two favorites among them. Also, each character can be customized to a certain extent, allowing players the fun of building a character that feels like their own.Click to expand...Click to shrink...Can you provide some more detail on the general gameplay loop? The game has a so-called "hub" area, where players can choose their character, customize them and enter online multiplayer*. Online multiplayer supports up to 8 players. Upon concluding an online match, players then return to the hub, at which point they receive some sort of reward whether they win or lose. Using these rewards, players can further customize their character, and so the cycle continues.Online matches are generally last player standing, however there are certain cases where victory conditions differ. For example, players may be tasked with teaming up to take down a powerful boss enemy, or find themselves in other special circumstances.Click to expand...Click to shrink...It sounds like even those who tend to shy away from PvP can still enjoy themselves. That was the intention. I personally am not much of a PvP person, and I wanted to make something that's satisfying even for players like me.While the goal of a match is to obtain First Blood, there are personal objectives that provide separate rewards to the player as well, so I hope these add to the fun of each engagement.Click to expand...Click to shrink...What other ways might players enjoy the game outside of combat? One thing I love doing in any game I direct is leaving fragments of lore and worldbuilding details, allowing the player the fun of using their imagination to make connections. The Duskbloods is no exception to this. However, we've gone about it a little differently from previous titles. The fragments this time are found in the previously mentioned character customization items: their "blood history and fate." Customizing a character will reveal a piece of information regarding the world and its unfolding story.Click to expand...Click to shrink...Do you mind sharing any other points you personally find interesting? One area I haven't talked about yet is "roles."In online play, roles give players special responsibilities and objectives that often lead to unique interactions and relationships between players based on their corresponding roles. That's probably not much info to go on, so allow me to provide a few examples. But please note we're still finalizing some of the naming and details. For example, if a player possesses the "Destined Rivals" role, another player is designated as their rival, and they are tasked with finding and defeating that player. Doing so counts as achieving a personal goal, separate from the overall victory conditions.Click to expand...Click to shrink...Another example is "Destined Companion," where one player is required to seek out another designated as their companion, which results in a special reward if they form a bond with one another.Roles can be assigned to any character via blood customization, allowing players to enjoy role-playing in a literal sense and hopefully adding to the drama of these engagements.Click to expand...Click to shrink...That reminds me, I was curious about the winged rat character seen in the trailer. Can you provide some details as to what role this character serves? That character shares a similar role with the fire keepers from the Dark Souls series. They remain in the hub area, providing the player with advice and guidance.I suppose you could say we tried doing something a little Nintendo-esque in the spirit of the partnership.Click to expand...Click to shrink...Creators Voice blog: Hidetaka Miyazaki on The Duskbloods (part 1) - News - Nintendo Official SiteGet the inside scoop on The Duskbloods in this interview with the director, Hidetaka Miyazaki of FromSoftware. You can gain blood points in many different ways, and these can be used to update (?) and customize characters. The conditions can change as well, so sometimes it is strictly teaming up to defeat a large boss of grand difficulty. He even mentions he is not personally a big PVP player, presumably to say that you can still enjoy this experience without seeking out PVP. So, Nintendo once again is not bothering with the achievement/trophy system. Why do you think is that?www.resetera.comDustC H A O SMemberOct 25, 201739,934I don't really care about achievements/trophies from personal gaming perspective but I will admit they make sense from business point of view. People will buy games for them. People will play longer to get them. People will research them in relation to games.Yesterday's Direct confirmed once again that they are not bothering with that feature on a system wide level. So why do you think Nintendo is (clearly) averse to them? Do they think they cheapen the gaming experience? Do they simply not care? There has to be a reason, as I have seen this feature requested by Nintendo users quite a lot. One of the things I like about trophies is they can offer an incentive to explore all the nooks and crannies of a game where I might otherwise have just put it down and started something else. But I think Nintendo see the joy of playing the game itself as somewhat undermined by some overhead 'meta' progression/achievement system which distracts from just enjoying the game for its own sake.DECKARDCreator of WormsVerifiedNov 26, 20176,916UKI always saw achievements as being like a job when baked into the OS. Failed/unsuccessful short-lived new IP you wish could have a second chancewww.resetera.comMax|PayneMemberOct 27, 20179,470PortugalTalking about new original IPs that had one or two entries released but ultimately didn't have the success their creators wanted and have been shelved or forgotten for a good while now.My example would be 2012's Rage from id software.Following nearly 20 years of genre defining first person shooters and Doom 3, Rage was a large departure from their true and tried formula of rather linear corridor shooters, this time trying an open world game with vehicle combat and rpg elements. It was definitely an ambitious endeavour that had a healthy amount of hype behind it running up to release, such hype that even convinced me to pre-order it on Steam.Come release time and after sorting out the myriad technical problems it had at launch, I ended up finding it a disappointing game that I was still able to wring some enjoyment out of but ultimately not worth the hype behind it.It definitely needed extra time in the oven, for one and even then it would still be a technically compromised game due to having it run at 60fps on the PS360 generation of consoles. The game wasn't terrible but it was a letdown from id software's usual high standard of development.Oh, and it barely had an ending. All that said, and without having played Rage 2 (not developed by id soft), I sometimes still think about the game and wonder how it would have fared had id soft waited an extra year or two and released it for the PS4/XB1 instead and most importantly, how would current day id software handle the IP without their current tech.Probably not worth the effort for them but boy, do I wonder... Kit & Krysta explain what is likely going on inside Nintendo right now as a result of pricing backlash and confusionwww.resetera.comRandomlyRandom67MemberJul 7, 20232,185Really really great video, well worth the launch. They basically go through and describe what is likely happening inside Nintendo right now as a result of the pricing backlash and consumer confusion on pricing. It's just that the dollar amount is higher than before, so it's a surprise."AAA prestige titles," as they call them, cost more to produce now than ever before. Why do you think so many of them have in-app purchases now? But Nintendo is known for releasing complete games that don't nickel-and-dime you, so they're not going to be subsidized by whales. The only alternatives are to either increase prices or decrease costs (layoffs, etc).I just visited an inflation calculator, and a $60 game in 2005 dollars would cost $98 in 2025 dollars. $80 for a AAA game now is actually cheaper than $60 then. But the new dollar amount comes with sticker shock.Games need to cost more to support higher salaries and other development costs, and therefore prices need to go up eventually. But there isn't any "good" time to announce a price increase. I don't know what the right answer is, if one exists. There are a lot of missinformation being spread ($90 physical games) but aside from that, they need to answer their costurmers. Nintendo has painted itself as "fun for everyone" company because their games were more acessible than the competition and now it's the opposite. Why are they selling Mario Kart World for $80? If they give a "get a second job" type of response, then I wish everyone fun but I'll be skipping this generation and staying with my Switch 1 games.Edit: grammar mistakesRPGsandFGCsMemberJun 30, 2024593CaliforniaI think that was good analysis from them, all things considered. Especially interesting is the time frame, that the public's reaction will get back to Furukawa at NoJ sometime late today due to time zones, if it makes it that far.Unfortunately, I think Nintendo is stuck with it. The price of the console is the price due to the features, that's not getting lowered. If anything tariffs are going to drive it up within the year. They're not going to drop the price of Mario Kart, that ship has sailed. They're stuck with that game being $80 for the foreseeable future. They could probably sneakily drop it down to $70 in a year or two and not totally compromise their "our games don't drop in price" stance, but that's about it.From my uninformed opinion, I think their best course of action that is realistic is to make the MKW bundle a permanent thing. Right now the messaging is that it's temporary, and that's only going to be bad press when supplies run out. MKW is going to be absurdly popular and people can feel like they're getting a deal by getting it for "only" $50.Mauricio_MagusMemberOct 25, 201715,444If tha max price was 70, and that small stupid 10 dollar game was free... Ubisoft updates Far Cry 4 to censor nudity and adjust breast size of female characterwww.resetera.comnicoreeseMemberJan 18, 20181,388Just saw this and could not believe it. This game is 10 years old. What's going on at Ubisoft? Is this a part of the Tencent buy in already? They force you to update the game or you cannot play online. They at least have changed some male nudity, gave a female character smaller breasts and a bra when it was previously a topless scene.https://www.reddit.com/r/farcry/comments/1jqthqe/far_cry_4_censored_update_pc/Changes were also made to the audio files, but only the English ones. I'm looking into what else might've changed.EDIT: They didn't change the Yuma model in any capacity. If I had to guess? They just went the Far Cry 6 route and covered all the nipples. Hers were covered by her jacket to begin with, so there was nothing to change. Kalinag's model is also unaffected.EDIT 2: They also patched Far Cry 3 on March 31st. I haven't seen anyone talk about that yet. They may have done something similar with Citra. Anyone want to find out?Edit 3: Just went back to the Shanath Arena mission. Ajay is no longer naked. Meanwhile others might hide the production costs behind lower initial prices only to drop the micro transaction Hammer or you realize later that the development team was killed because the budget can't be recouped. It's really no rocket science, they charge what they think they have to be for their business to be viable. Either you are on board or you aren't, there are plenty other alternatives out there in terms of gaming. The Direct yesterday was a mess imo, but at least they weren't sugar coating how the game look and perform like right now and didn't sugar coat the pricing for this stuff. Even if it bad for people, at least the information is there to make decisions.Personally I also think they still have quite a bit to unveil when it comes to the content their are offering. We saw FFVII and SW Outlaws. None of them would look anything close on SW1. They would just not run at all probably. Give it some time. Dev kits have not been handed out for that long (I guess) and maybe the DLSS hooks were not in yet (isn't it usually one of the later steps for games?) - it wouldn't make any sense if Nintendo went with a modern, custom Nvidia chip but left out DLSS capabilities. Stranger things have happened but I'm feeling good about what I've seen. Compare that to a Steam Deck for example - a lot of games look super washed out because of FSR2/3 and 800p max - this doesn't seem comparable.bushmonkeyMemberOct 29, 20176,005Nintendo aren't the kind of company to mention something like DLSS that most of their audience wouldn't understand or care about. (The newest DLSS 4.0, the transformer mode, even more expensive.) But they found a paper from either NVIDIA or Nintendo about an extra lightweight DLSS technique that would be fast enough on the Switch 2. So Nintendo can't just toggle on DLSS like a PC GPU, they need their custom version to be ready, and maybe it's not there yet.King_MocMemberOct 25, 20174,640Mr.Deadshot said:Cyberpunk and Outlaws will be very interesting because they run and look not especially GREAT on a base PS5 in some places.
