Big and Small Underwater Faces — 3rd Place.
Trips to the Antarctic Peninsula always yield amazing encounters with leopard seals. Boldly approaching me and baring his teeth, this individual was keen to point out that this part of Antarctica was his territory. This picture was shot at dusk, resulting in the rather moody atmosphere.

The striking eye of a humpback whale named Sweet Girl peers at the camera. Just four days later, she would be dead, hit by a speeding boat and one of the 20,000 whales killed by ship strikes each year. Photographer Rachel Moore’s captivating imageof Sweet Girl earned top honors at the 2025 United Nations World Oceans Day Photo Competition.
Wonder: Sustaining What Sustains Us — WinnerThis photo, taken in Mo’orea, French Polynesia in 2024, captures the eye of a humpback whale named Sweet Girl, just days before her tragic death. Four days after I captured this intimate moment, she was struck and killed by a fast-moving ship. Her death serves as a heartbreaking reminder of the 20,000 whales lost to ship strikes every year. We are using her story to advocate for stronger protections, petitioning for stricter speed laws around Tahiti and Mo’orea during whale season. I hope Sweet Girl’s legacy will spark real change to protect these incredible animals and prevent further senseless loss.Credit: Rachel Moore/ United Nations World Oceans Day www.unworldoceansday.org
Now in its twelfth year, the competition coordinated in collaboration between the UN Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea, DivePhotoGuide, Oceanic Global, and  the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO. Each year, thousands of underwater photographers submit images that judges award prizes for across four categories: Big and Small Underwater Faces, Underwater Seascapes, Above Water Seascapes, and Wonder: Sustaining What Sustains Us.
This year’s winning images include a curious leopard seal, a swarm of jellyfish, and a very grumpy looking Japanese warbonnet. Given our oceans’ perilous state, all competition participants were required to sign a charter of 14 commitments regarding ethics in photography.
Underwater Seascapes — Honorable MentionWith only orcas as their natural predators, leopard seals are Antarctica’s most versatile hunters, preying on everything from fish and cephalopods to penguins and other seals. Gentoo penguins are a favored menu item, and leopard seals can be observed patrolling the waters around their colonies. For this shot, I used a split image to capture both worlds: the gentoo penguin colony in the background with the leopard seal on the hunt in the foreground.Credit: Lars von Ritter Zahony/ United Nations World Oceans Day www.unworldoceansday.org
Above Water Seascapes – WinnerA serene lake cradled by arid dunes, where a gentle stream breathes life into the heart of Mother Earth’s creation: Captured from an airplane, this image reveals the powerful contrasts and hidden beauty where land and ocean meet, reminding us that the ocean is the source of all life and that everything in nature is deeply connected. The location is a remote stretch of coastline near Shark Bay, Western Australia.Credit: Leander Nardin/ United Nations World Oceans Day www.unworldoceansday.org
Above Water Seascapes — 3rd PlaceParadise Harbour is one of the most beautiful places on the Antarctic Peninsula. When I visited, the sea was extremely calm, and I was lucky enough to witness a wonderfully clear reflection of the Suárez Glacierin the water. The only problem was the waves created by our speedboat, and the only way to capture the perfect reflection was to lie on the bottom of the boat while it moved towards the glacier.Credit: Andrey Nosik/ United Nations World Oceans Day www.unworldoceansday.org
Underwater Seascapes — 3rd Place“La Rapadura” is a natural hidden treasure on the northern coast of Tenerife, in the Spanish territory of the Canary Islands. Only discovered in 1996, it is one of the most astonishing underwater landscapes in the world, consistently ranking among the planet’s best dive sites. These towering columns of basalt are the result of volcanic processes that occurred between 500,000 and a million years ago. The formation was created when a basaltic lava flow reached the ocean, where, upon cooling and solidifying, it contracted, creating natural structures often compared to the pipes of church organs. Located in a region where marine life has been impacted by once common illegal fishing practices, this stunning natural monument has both geological and ecological value, and scientists and underwater photographers are advocating for its protection.Credit: Pedro Carrillo/ United Nations World Oceans Day www.unworldoceansday.org
Underwater Seascapes — WinnerThis year, I had the incredible opportunity to visit a jellyfish lake during a liveaboard trip around southern Raja Ampat, Indonesia. Being surrounded by millions of jellyfish, which have evolved to lose their stinging ability due to the absence of predators, was one of the most breathtaking experiences I’ve ever had.Credit: Dani Escayola/ United Nations World Oceans Day www.unworldoceansday.org
Underwater Seascapes — 2nd PlaceThis shot captures a school of rays resting at a cleaning station in Mauritius, where strong currents once attracted them regularly. Some rays grew accustomed to divers, allowing close encounters like this. Sadly, after the severe bleaching that the reefs here suffered last year, such gatherings have become rare, and I fear I may not witness this again at the same spot.Credit: Gerald Rambert/ United Nations World Oceans Day www.unworldoceansday.org
Wonder: Sustaining What Sustains Us — 3rd PlaceShot in Cuba’s Jardines de la Reina—a protected shark sanctuary—this image captures a Caribbean reef shark weaving through a group of silky sharks near the surface. Using a slow shutter and strobes as the shark pivoted sharply, the motion blurred into a wave-like arc across its head, lit by the golden hues of sunset. The abundance and behavior of sharks here is a living symbol of what protected oceans can look like.Credit: Steven Lopez/ United Nations World Oceans Day www.unworldoceansday.org
Above Water Seascapes — 2nd PlaceNorthern gannetssoar above the dramatic cliffs of Scotland’s Hermaness National Nature Reserve, their sleek white bodies and black-tipped wings slicing through the Shetland winds. These seabirds, the largest in the North Atlantic, are renowned for their striking plunge-dives, reaching speeds up to 100 kphas they hunt for fish beneath the waves. The cliffs of Hermaness provide ideal nesting sites, with updrafts aiding their take-offs and landings. Each spring, thousands return to this rugged coastline, forming one of the UK’s most significant gannet colonies. It was a major challenge to take photos at the edge of these cliffs at almost 200 meterswith the winds up to 30 kph.Credit: Nur Tucker/ United Nations World Oceans Day www.unworldoceansday.org
Above Water Seascapes — Honorable MentionA South Atlantic swell breaks on the Dungeons Reef off the Cape Peninsula, South Africa, shot while photographing a big-wave surf session in October 2017. It’s the crescendoing sounds of these breaking swells that always amazes me.Credit: Ken Findlay/ United Nations World Oceans Day www.unworldoceansday.org
Wonder: Sustaining What Sustains Us — Honorable MentionHumpback whales in their thousands migrate along the Ningaloo Reef in Western Australia every year on the way to and from their calving grounds. In four seasons of swimming with them on the reef here, this is the only encounter I’ve had like this one. This pair of huge adult whales repeatedly spy-hopped alongside us, seeking to interact with and investigate us, leaving me completely breathless. The female in the foreground was much more confident than the male behind and would constantly make close approaches, whilst the male hung back a little, still interested but shy. After more than 10 years working with wildlife in the water, this was one of the best experiences of my life.Credit: Ollie Clarke/ United Nations World Oceans Day www.unworldoceansday.org
Big and Small Underwater Faces — 2nd PlaceOn one of my many blackwater dives in Anilao, in the Philippines, my guide and I spotted something moving erratically at a depth of around 20 meters, about 10 to 15 centimeters in size. We quickly realized that it was a rare blanket octopus. As we approached, it opened up its beautiful blanket, revealing its multicolored mantle. I managed to take a few shots before it went on its way. I felt truly privileged to have captured this fascinating deep-sea cephalopod. Among its many unique characteristics, this species exhibits some of the most extreme sexual size-dimorphism in nature, with females weighing up to 40,000 times more than males.Credit: Giacomo Marchione/ United Nations World Oceans Day www.unworldoceansday.org
Big and Small Underwater Faces – WinnerThis photo of a Japanese warbonnetwas captured in the Sea of Japan, about 50 milessouthwest of Vladivostok, Russia. I found the ornate fish at a depth of about 30 meters, under the stern of a shipwreck. This species does not appear to be afraid of divers—on the contrary, it seems to enjoy the attention—and it even tried to sit on the dome port of my camera.Credit: Andrey Nosik/ United Nations World Oceans Day www.unworldoceansday.org
Wonder: Sustaining What Sustains Us — 2nd PlaceA juvenile pinnate batfishcaptured with a slow shutter speed, a snooted light, and deliberate camera panning to create a sense of motion and drama. Juvenile pinnate batfish are known for their striking black bodies outlined in vibrant orange—a coloration they lose within just a few months as they mature. I encountered this restless subject in the tropical waters of Indonesia’s Lembeh Strait. Capturing this image took patience and persistence over two dives, as these active young fish constantly dart for cover in crevices, making the shot particularly challenging.Credit: Luis Arpa/ United Nations World Oceans Day www.unworldoceansday.org

Image: Nintendo LifeThe summer is here, the Switch 2 is almost here, and that means it's eShop Selects time for May.
This is our very last Switch 1 edition of our monthly feature — but don't worry, things aren't changing with the release of a new console. You'll still be getting your monthly dose of eShop hidden gems that we've reviewed, but Switch 2 eShop exclusives will be joining the party too.
So, let's jump in — like previous editions, our team of writers and contributors have got together to vote for their top three games from all game releases we reviewed from May 2025. The games with the highest total scores make our top three. It really is that simple.Subscribe to Nintendo Life on YouTube814kWatch on YouTube

    Switch too

The very best Switch 2 games coming soon

    Honourable mentions
Let's get something out of the way, first — Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time would be eligible for this, but we're currently in the process of reviewing it. As such, because it's also coming to Switch 2 on launch day, it will be eligible for votes in our June edition. So don't panic!
Another notable release missing is Pipistrello and the Cursed Yoyo, a late-May release that's been reviewing extremely well. This is another one we're working on as we speak, which is why you won't spy it below.
So what have we got in the running this month? From our 7/10 eShop exclusives... there's quite a lot to choose from! Every single game got at least one vote from our writers, so here's what just missed out on a top-three spot, followed by the podium:

Arcade Archives NebulasRay | Review: 7/10
    Dunk Dunk | Review: 7/10
Into the Restless Ruins | Review: 9/10
Labyrinth of the Demon King | Review: 8/10

    3rd Place - Onimusha 2: Samurai's Destiny
Publisher: Capcom / Developer: CapcomRelease Date: 23rd May 2025/ 23rd May 2025We're living in the samurai renaissance, so why shouldn't one of the most well-known video game samurais return to take the spotlight? Onimusha 2: Samurai's Destiny got a remaster almost 23 years after its original release, and it's still excellent, despite the aspect ratio issues.
This is largely a no-frills release of the PS2 game, with some nice quality-of-life feature like autosave, better weapon switching, and the ability to swap between new and tank controls. It's perhaps not the most popular game in the series, but we love it, scoring it an 8/10.

    Blade of glory

2nd Place - Please, Touch The Artwork 2
Publisher: Studio Waterzooi / Developer: Thomas WaterzooiRelease Date: 23rd May 2025/ 23rd May 2025Ahhh, here's a Nintendo Life favourite. Please, Touch The Artwork 2 is a delightfully wacky expansion of Thomas Waterzooi's predecessor, this time focusing on a skeleton andthe artwork of James Ensor, a Belgian artist. Oh, and the skeleton is the artist himself. Yep.
That should give you an idea of what to expect from the game — it's surreal, absurd, gentle, and relaxing all in one, and for less that an absolute steal. You can play it on your lunch break with a cuppa and you'll be done in under an hour. A worthy 9/10, if we say so ourselves.

1st Place - Duck Detective: The Ghost of Glamping
Publisher: Happy Broccoli / Developer: Happy BroccoliRelease Date: 22nd May 2025/ 22nd May 2025Short and sweet seems to be a theme this month, and our eShop Selects winner — and the final Switch 1-only winner — goes to a lovely little 3-hour mystery starring a recovering bread addict duck. Duck Detective: The Ghost of Glamping is the kind of levity we need in the world right now.
This sequel is a total delight, barmy and silly with a little bit of thought put into it. It's not the most challenging mystery, nor will many of the reveals surprise, but it never failed to make us smile. We scored Duck Detective's second case an 8/10, and we hope to see Eugene McQuacklin return.

Do you agree with our ranking? Tell us about your favourite eShop releases of last month by voting in our poll and sharing your thoughts in the comments.

What's the best eShop game from our May 2025 picks? No results yet, check back later...

How we decide our eShop Selects top three: As we reach the end of every month, the Nintendo Life staff vote on their favourite titles from a list of games selected by the editorial team. To qualify for this list, these games must have been released as a digital-only Nintendo Switch eShop title in that particular month, and must have been reviewed on Nintendo Life; we select the qualifying games based on their review scores.
Staff are then asked to vote for three games that they think deserve to sit right at the very top of that list; first choice gets three points, second choice gets two points, and third choice gets one point. These votes are then tallied to create a top-three list, with the overall winner taking that month's top prize.

Feature: Nintendo Life eShop Selects (May 2025)
Image: Nintendo LifeThe summer is here, the Switch 2 is almost here, and that means it's eShop Selects time for May. It really is that simple.Subscribe to Nintendo Life on YouTube814kWatch on YouTube Switch too The very best Switch 2 games coming soon Honourable mentions Let's get something out of the way, first — Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time would be eligible for this, but we're currently in the process of reviewing it. Every single game got at least one vote from our writers, so here's what just missed out on a top-three spot, followed by the podium: Arcade Archives NebulasRay | Review: 7/10 Dunk Dunk | Review: 7/10 Into the Restless Ruins | Review: 9/10 Labyrinth of the Demon King | Review: 8/10 Old Skies | Review: 7/10 Scoot over, Ness 3rd Place - Onimusha 2: Samurai's Destiny Publisher: Capcom / Developer: CapcomRelease Date: 23rd May 2025/ 23rd May 2025We're living in the samurai renaissance, so why shouldn't one of the most well-known video game samurais return to take the spotlight? Onimusha 2: Samurai's Destiny got a remaster almost 23 years after its original release, and it's still excellent, despite the aspect ratio issues. This is largely a no-frills release of the PS2 game, with some nice quality-of-life feature like autosave, better weapon switching, and the ability to swap between new and tank controls. It's perhaps not the most popular game in the series, but we love it, scoring it an 8/10. Blade of glory 2nd Place - Please, Touch The Artwork 2 Publisher: Studio Waterzooi / Developer: Thomas WaterzooiRelease Date: 23rd May 2025/ 23rd May 2025Ahhh, here's a Nintendo Life favourite. • How Leeds studio Born Ugly turned radical reinvention into a creative philosophy

In 2020, while many studios were battening down the hatches, a new name quietly entered the scene with a tongue-in-cheek wink to the times. Born Ugly didn't just rebrand in the middle of a global crisis – it was born during it.
"You could say we were born in the ugliest of times," the team reflects. Yet, despite the chaos, the studio emerged with a clear sense of purpose, ready to challenge conventions and bring fresh energy to branding – from consumer to B2B and everything in between.
Born Ugly wasn't your average startup, though. It sprang from the former headquarters of Elmwood, a globally recognised agency with a decades-long legacy. When Elmwood demerged at the end of 2019, its Leeds and Melbourne studios branched off to become independent entities. Many of the team had been part of Elmwood for years, but with the split came the opportunity and necessity to reinvent.
"One day, we were the HQ of a major international business; the next, we were virtually a startup no one had ever heard of," they explain. "It's a shift that takes a bit to get your head around in every way – attitudinally, mentally and in how you approach your work."

Building the Born Ugly brand wasn't just a cosmetic exercise. It required deep strategic thinking – the kind the studio is now known for. "We had to rethink what we were about, our new business strategy and the culture we wanted to build. We didn't quite grasp the scale of the change needed immediately… it felt as though we could just keep going when actually, we had to start afresh but without losing all the great things that had made us successful in the past," says the team.
That tension between heritage and reinvention, between structure and spontaneity, continues to define Born Ugly's approach. While they're fiercely proud of their Northern roots, the studio operates globally, with clients spanning the US, New Zealand and Europe.
They've long worked with Leeds-based Astonish, a household cleaning brand that's quietly grown into a national success story, and they're committed to championing other under-the-radar businesses in the region.

The project that truly put Born Ugly on the international map was their transformation of MitoQ, a New Zealand cell health supplement looking to break into the US and Chinese markets. When they started, MitoQ was positioned as a standard supplement. Born Ugly reimagined it from the ground up, evolving it into a premium cellular health brand and carving out an entirely new category. From science visualisation to packaging to brand storytelling, it was a full-spectrum overhaul.
"It made us realise the impact we could have, and it opened the door to other opportunities," they say.
One of those doors led to Carlsberg and its global cider brand Somersby. What began as a branding refresh has evolved into a long-term partnership spanning eight years and counting. "Somersby has grown globally to be a brand that is about a lot more than just cider," the team explains. "We've evolved the brand to ensure it fits with a changing consumer and can stretch across an expanding portfolio while having a bigger impact on the Carlsberg business."

Born Ugly explains why they make a point of staying "industry agnostic" – a deliberate choice rooted in curiosity. "What excites us is tackling interesting problems, no matter the industry," they say. "If there's an Ugly Truth to uncover and solve with creative thinking, we're in."
That idea – the "Ugly Truth" – is more than just a brand hook. It's a strategic lens that drives everything they do. Rather than accepting a client brief at face value, the studio pushes deeper, asking: What's the real issue? What's being avoided? What hard truth needs to be faced?
"We aren't here to just be creative," they clarify. "Proper strategic and creative thinking is about transformation… if a client comes with a brief we don't think will move their business forward, we'll say so. We don't do work for the sake of it – we do work that's meaningful, effective and transformative."
That mindset also shapes their internal culture. Born Ugly describes itself as having a startup mentality, adding that the team is encouraged to be fearless, to take risks, and even to fail. "That's often where the most brilliant ideas come from," they say. "We believe diversity in experience and perspective leads to the best work."

Their Leeds studio is built to support that way of thinking. Collaboration is baked into the workflow, with 'psycho rooms'used to map out every nuance of a brief.
Three days a week, the team comes together in person to bounce ideas, solve problems and make decisions as a unit. "We're also happy to use outside experts to make sure we're offering the best possible thinking," they add, a reflection of their openness to collaboration beyond their own walls.
True to form, Born Ugly is already looking for the next creative hill to climb. "One of our own Ugly Truths is that we are quite restless and always looking for the next big thing and to do something new and exciting," they hint. While they're not giving too much away, that restless energy and that refusal to settle is exactly what's made Born Ugly a name to watch.
In a world where beauty is often only skin deep, Born Ugly reminds us that the most powerful work comes from getting uncomfortable, asking difficult questions, and digging into the mess of real business challenges.

How Leeds studio Born Ugly turned radical reinvention into a creative philosophy
"It's a shift that takes a bit to get your head around in every way – attitudinally, mentally and in how you approach your work." Building the Born Ugly brand wasn't just a cosmetic exercise. • Polaroid’s tumblr-core MoMA collab turns your photos into works of art

Polaroid’s new collaboration with the Metropolitan Museum of Artis designed to make your retro photos look like colorful works of pop art—and it feels like a flashback to 2014.

The partnership includes two exclusive items: an Polaroid camera and a separate set of eight custom film frames. The camera itself is an analog instant camera—specifically, Polaroid’s Now Generation 3 model—rendered in a bright blue housing, complete with the “MoMA” wordmark in a lighter blue across the front. Included with the device are three neon, MoMA branded wrist straps to customize the look. Where the collaboration really shines is with its custom Polaroid film frames. The MoMA and Polaroid teams have designed 12 unique frames, each in high-octane color combinations like turquoise and bright red or lemon yellow and blue. Six of the frames feature the MoMA logo, while the other six come pre-captioned with quotes from artists including Carmen Herrera, Betye Saar, Meret Oppenheim, and Milton Glaser. You might receive a quote like, “I am interested in restless ideas,” by An-My Lê, or “If one truly loves nature, one finds beauty everywhere,” by Vincent Van Gogh. It’s a cute, if corny, concept that feels like it would’ve gone instantly viral in Tumblr’s heyday of quote posting and aesthetic collages. According to a press release, the collab is intended to “capture the ethos of those who dared to see the world differently and invite today’s creatives to do the same.” For anyone who’s interested in the camera but not the inspiring quotes, the device is also compatible with regular Polaroid i-Type film.

This new collection is one of several recent collaborations that Polaroid has produced based on design and art icons, including an Eames-inspired Now Generation 2 camera and another Now Generation 2 that’s fully decked out in imagery from Jean-Michel Basquiat’s artwork Boy and Dog in a Johnnypump.

My baby has been on eight flights and isn't even a year old yet.
Our first flight was short, which helped us learn how to make future, longer flights a success.
Now I know a travel stroller is essential for maneuvering in the airport and worth the investment.

As a person who travels quite a bit, I'll admit I was nervous about traveling with my first child. What if they cried? What if we disturbed nearby passengers? What if there was a diaper blowout? There was a lot to be anxious about. Our first fight was just 90 minutes, but we survived it. Now, my baby is has already been on eight flights — domestic and international — and they aren't even a year old yet. Our goal has been to keep our baby safe and comfortable, while making sure the flight is peaceful and enjoyable for ourselves and the people around us. My family has accomplished this by following these simple strategies. We started with a short flightWhile this may not always be possible, it helped my family quite a bit that our first flight with a baby was a shorter one, just 90 minutes long. This allowed us to get our bearings, while introducing our baby to flying. Plus, it helped us to see if there was anything we might need to adjust for future, longer flights. We always wear a baby carrierIf there's one item I wouldn't get on a flight without, it would be my baby carrier. There are many styles, but for flights, I prefer a wrap-style carrier for it's comfort and compactness.I appreciate the hands-free experience through the airport, and, more importantly, they make it more comfortable to hold your baby throughout the flight if they are flying as a lap infant.
My own bag is super organizedLuggage organizing pouches are my best friend on a flight. I have several in my own carryon bag so I can keep snacks, headphones, sanitizing wipes, and more neat and organized. When everything is in its own bag I don't have to dig around searching for it when I need it, which can be a lifesaver. On our last flight, my baby was asleep on my chest, but I desperately wanted my Kindle, headphones, and a snack. It was easy for me to snag them from my bag without waking the baby.

The writerpacks carryon items in individual travel pouches so they're easy to fish out of her bag, even if she's only got one hand free.

A travel stroller is essentialOn our first trip, we didn't have a travel stroller. I didn't want to spend extra money on more gear and I thought we would be fine without it. That was a big mistake. Now we have an affordable model that is easy to use. It isn't as bulky as our usual stroller, but it's perfect for maneuvering through the terminal and provides an extra place to stash essentials while at the airport. We check, and double check, our diaper bagI always make sure we're set up for success with extra outfits that are warm and comfortable just in case we run into any delays or something gets dirty while we're traveling. A travel diaper changing mat is a must-have item that allows us to change our child no matter where we are. On our international flight, our baby had a diaper that desperately needed changing, but we were stuck in our seats. Thanks to our travel mat, we were able to get the baby back into a clean diaper right away. And, as all parents know, extra wipes and diapers are never a bad idea.We don't skimp on toysOf course, packing comfort items, books, and fun toys is a great way to redirect restlessness on a flight. I try to keep to items that are small, mess-free, and not too noisy and always add in a few new items that my child hasn't seen before. We take advantage of early boardingAs soon as we get to the gate, one of us makes a beeline for the gate agent. We double check that our seats are all together and ask for any necessary accommodations. Many airlines let those traveling with young children board early, and we always take advantage of this. It's a lot easier to get down the narrow plane aisle with all of our stuff and a baby if other passengers aren't in the way.We try to plan around naps and feeding timeThough this isn't always possible, we try to line up flights so they happen when our baby is ready for a nap. Recently, we selected a flight time not based on our typical preference, but based around our baby's sleep schedule, and it really paid off. Ideally, I'll be able to feed the baby during takeoff, which keeps them comfortable and happy and then they will settle into a nice slumber for the flight. We've used this strategy for a few flights, and it's been successful every time.We do our best to stay calmIt may be easier said than done, but staying in a good headspace is what has helped me and my husband the most during these flights. We've both still had stressful moments, and that's when we try to help one another to take a step back and regroup. Our child picks up on our feelings and moods, so if we're anxious, they might be, too. Taking deep breaths, not rushing, staying calm has helped make the eight flights we've already been on a success and we can't wait to take more.

  • Getting Enough Sleep is Critical for Weight Loss and Maintenance

May 21, 20256 min readSleep Plays an Important Role in Sustainable Weight LossA sleep medicine specialist explains how restless nights lead to consuming more calories and how you can use sleep as a tool for weight lossBy Tammy Worth solidcolours/Getty ImagesThis Nature Outlook is editorially independent, produced with financial support from Avadel.A healthy diet and regular exercise have long been staples of weight management. But research shows that the role of sleep, which helps to regulate appetite hormones and calorie intake, is just as important. Esra Tasali, a sleep specialist at University of Chicago Medicine in Illinois and director of the UChicago Sleep Center, spoke to Nature about why getting sufficient sleep could be crucial to weight loss and maintenance. How did you end up studying sleep and weight loss?On supporting science journalismIf you're enjoying this article, consider supporting our award-winning journalism by subscribing. I had completed my pulmonary training and decided to specialize in sleep medicine. I also trained in endocrinology, so it was natural for me to study the relationship between sleep and metabolic diseases, including obesity and diabetes.Would you say that sleep is as important for the body as it is for the brain?Absolutely! Sleep is inextricably linked to our biology and important for every cell in the body. Work at the University of Chicago has challenged the brain-centred view of sleep. As far back as 1999, we published a paper that showed that healthy young men who did not have obesity or diabetes, when sleep-deprived in a laboratory setting, show signs of prediabetes. And now we have the research to show that sleep is essential to regulating metabolism, appetite and hormones. Why does not getting enough sleep make us more susceptible to weight gain?Lack of sleep increases our drive to eat. There are two main reasons that this could happen. The first is that when we are sleep-deprived, our brain’s reward centres are more active and drive us to seek rewards. These include food, particularly high-calorie, unhealthy food. Our ability to inhibit the impulse to eat is diminished. The second mechanism driving increased calorie intake is elevations in appetite hormones. The most well-known is ghrelin, the ‘hunger hormone’, which is mainly secreted by the stomach. If you don’t sleep enough, levels of that hormone will be higher, and you will feel hungrier and consume more calories. Over the long term, this leads to weight gain. In 2022, we showed, in a real-world setting while people continued their daily activities in their home environment, that if you extend sleep by an average of 1.2 hours per night and monitor the energy intake among adults who are overweight, they decreased their intake by an average of 270 calories per day.How many hours of sleep should people aim for if they are trying to lose weight? In our study, we aimed for 8.5 hours of time in bed. So, a target of at least 8 hours in bed — and no less than 7 hours of sleep — would be a good start for an adult. But any increase in sleep time seems to help. Interestingly, we found an association between an increase in sleep duration and a decrease in calorie intake. Even an extra 30 minutes of sleep reduced the number of calories consumed. Many people would like to get more sleep, but have difficulty doing so. What kind of sleep intervention did you use in the study? We personalized the sleep-hygiene instructions — that is, we tailored them to each person’s schedule and specific needs. One strategy that worked for almost all participants was to insist that they put their electronic devices away at a certain time so that they wouldn’t hear those beeps and dings that draw them into social media, texting or e-mail.Does weight loss help sleep apnoea, in which a person’s breathing during sleep is interrupted?Yes — for people with sleep apnoea, a 10% reduction in body mass index reduces the apnoea’s severity by about one-third. And if you lose weight and improve your sleep apnoea, that might reduce your risk of type 2 diabetes, or make it less severe if you already have it. The fragmented, low-quality sleep associated with sleep apnoea, however, can compound the risk of obesity. So there’s a kind of a bidirectional interaction between excess weight and sleep apnoea. So, it’s not just the duration of sleep, but also sleep quality that plays a part in metabolism and diabetes risk?Yes, slow-wave sleep, often called deep sleep, is a key marker of sleep quality. This stage of sleep helps with memory consolidation, restoration at the cellular level and tissue repair, and the clearing out of metabolic waste products. It also has an important role in metabolism and hormonal release. For example, a major pulse of growth-hormone secretion occurs during slow-wave sleep. Our experimental work has shown that if you deprive healthy young adults of slow-wave sleep — to the levels seen in older adults, or in people with sleep apnoea — they show signs of prediabetes after just three days. This finding opened up an area of research that focused on the role of sleep quality in diabetes risk. And data emerging from large population studies suggest that adults who get sufficient slow-wave sleep have a lower future risk of developing diabetes. So finding ways to get enough slow-wave sleep seems to be important, particularly for younger people. Can wearable technology help people to get better sleep?Wearables have allowed people to become more aware of their sleep needs and patterns by helping them to monitor their sleep passively. But they don’t necessarily know what to do with this information they’re getting about their own sleep. What is missing are guided, personalized solutions to improve sleep for each individual. That is what we are working on in our new study. I think that, increasingly with wearables, people will start to see how their sleep is connected with other health parameters, such as heart rate, blood pressure and oxygen saturation. They might notice that improvement on those metrics correlate with better sleep, which can, in turn, lead to a change towards healthier sleep behaviours. How important do you think sleep is in the larger realm of weight-loss strategies?Getting enough sleep could really help to tackle the obesity epidemic. Its impact could be particularly great for younger people. We know that the obesity epidemic is even more pronounced than it used to be in children and young people. Teenagers are sleep-deprived for various reasons, including heavy use of electronics, social media, video gaming and, in some places, early school start times that work against teenagers’ natural circadian rhythms. To compensate for that sleep loss, they increase their food intake because they tend to be hungrier and reach for unhealthy foods, putting them on a high-risk trajectory for weight gain. So stopping that weight-gain spiral before it starts, at an early age, through healthier sleep habits, has enormous public-health implications for prevention or reversal of obesity.New weight-loss drugs, known as GLP-1 agonists, are effective against obesity. Is it still important to emphasize the importance of sleep in maintaining a healthy weight?Despite the increasing interest in the positive effects of GLP-1 agonists, there is still a lot of uncertainty about their long-term biological effects and how they will ultimately change people’s eating habits and lifestyle behaviours. They make you feel less hungry, but they also come with side effects and they’re quite expensive. Plus, when you stop these drugs, you rapidly regain weight. Sufficient sleep can also make you feel less hungry and help you to eat healthier foods; and the good news is that sleep is free, has no side effects, and has many other benefits to overall health and well-being.More than one-third of US adults are not getting enough sleep on a regular basis, which strongly increases their risk of chronic conditions, including obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Lack of sleep is estimated to cost the US economy close to half a trillion dollars per year. So I strongly believe that educating the public about the importance of adequate sleep in maintaining a healthy weight is crucial to preventing obesity and curbing the epidemic of chronic disease. This interview has been edited for length and clarity.

Mrs. DavisIf you’d like to watch something that establishes a similar whimsical tone as Murderbot, then Mrs. Davis
Anchored by a remarkable central performance from Betty Gilpin, Mrs. Davis is wild and ambitious in ways that few shows manage to be. In an era where AI has become increasingly prevalent in the world around us, Mrs. Davis feels more relevant than ever.
You can watch Mrs. Davis on Peacock.
SiloIt’s admittedly much more serious than Murderbot, but Silo builds the same kind of expansive and interesting world as that show. It’s riveting in its own right. The series is set inside of a silo where 10,000 people live. Although they have been led to believe that the world outside is decimated or unsafe, some people begin to believe that the entire world around them is nothing more than a lie.
As the leaders of the silo try to maintain order, they face a populace that is becoming more and more restless and is looking around for someone to blame. Rebecca Ferguson is brilliant at the center of this series, and the show knows how to maintain intrigue as its plot unfolds.
You can watch Silo on Apple TV+.
Star Trek: Strange New WorldsStar Trek: Strange New Worlds exists to remind you just how fun Star Trek can be. The series, which is technically a prequel to the original show, follows the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise as they explore new worlds and travel the galaxy. Starring Anson Mount, the show has exactly the right combination of silliness and stakes, and, above all else, the show knows how to create stories that are fun to watch.
Murderbot’s sense of humor is undeniably a little bit darker than Strange New Worlds, but if you’re looking for something with some whimsy, Star Trek has you covered.
You can watch Star Trek: Strange New Worlds on Paramount+.
