Thank your own personal deity--possibly The Outer Gods--it's Friday! Winter might be creeping in, but these weekend game deals are bringing the heat. Whether you’re a Switch slasher, a PlayStation purist, an Xbox adventurer or a PC power user, there’s something worth your clicks in this mix. Stock up for the weekend and I'll catch you Monday! This Day in Gaming 🎂In retro news, I’m celebrating the 19th birthday of Metroid Prime: Hunters while remembering the mild carpal tunnel it gave me. Developed for the newly minted DS, its standout innovation was the incorporation of stylus-driven aiming paired with six-player ad-hoc wireless multiplayer, allowing us hunters to engage in fast-paced, Phazon-fueled deathmatches on the go. By blending precision touchscreen controls with diverse character-specific abilities, it instantly sold me and my mates on the concept of portable, hyper-competitive first-person shooters. There’s a healthy swarm of discounts buzzing across every platform today, from indie gems to AAA heavy-hitters. Whether you're into sword-swinging epics, musical dungeon crawlers, or cosmic cowboy chaos, there’s something here worth chucking onto your backlog. Let's dig into the weird, wonderful, and wallet-friendly highlights for this very rainy Thursday. This Day in Gaming In retro news, I'm celebrating the 28th birthday of Fighters Megamix, the Sega Saturn's answer to Smash Bros before that was even a thing. Sega of the '90s was especially 3D fightin' obsessed, so the concept here was simple—smoosh a bunch of brawlers from the Virtua Fighter series, Fighting Vipers, and other games into one punch-a-rrific package. I remember being particularly stoked with the ten weirdo unlockable characters, like some Sonic the Fighters contestants, the palm tree from AM2's logo, a gun-packing Janet from Virtua Cop, and a *double checks memory* Daytona USA NASCAR.Aussie bdays for notable games- Fighters Megamix1997. eBay- Planetside2003.- Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney2008. • SanDisk’s latest drive sets new benchmark for consumer NVMe SSDs

SanDisk has officially introduced the WD Black SN8100, its latest high-end PCIe Gen 5 NVMe SSD targeting PC enthusiasts, gamers, and professional users.
With sequential read speeds of up to 14,900 MB/s and write speeds of 14,000 MB/s, the drive sets a new bar for consumer SSD performance, surpassing some of the best NVMe SSDs currently on the market, including the Crucial T705.
The SN8100 uses a standard M.2 2280 form factor and is available in capacities of 1TB, 2TB, 4TB, and 8TB.
It’s worth noting that the 1TB model offers lower write speeds, up to 11,000 MB/s, compared to the higher-capacity versions, which reach up to 14,000 MB/s.
    Recommended Videos
According to SanDisk, the drive is designed for applications ranging from gaming and content creation to AI workflows, where rapid data access and transfer are critical.
The SN8100 uses SanDisk’s BiCS8 TLC 3D CBA NAND, which is engineered for a smaller footprint thereby improving thermal performance.
SanDisk also states that the Gen 5.0 model is twice as power efficient as its PCIe Gen 4.0 predecessor, averaging just 7W of power consumption.
Comparing the new WD Black SN8100 with the Crucial T705, which is currently one of the fastest consumer NVMe SSDs, it has some clear advantages.
It’s marginally faster in read speeds (14,900 MB/s vs.
14,500 MB/s) but noticeably faster in write speeds (14,000 MB/s vs.
    12,700 MB/s).
It also delivers much better random performance, with 2.3 million IOPS for both reads and writes, compared to 1.5 million on the T705.
While these are just numbers, in the practical world such small differences shouldn’t matter for the average consumer.

More importantly, the SN8100 is more power efficient.
As mentioned, the drive is listed to draw an average of just 7W of power draw, while the T705 uses around 11W.
That should potentially mean less heat and better performance in tight spaces.
The WD Black SN8100 is available now through SanDisk.com and major retailers, with U.S.
    MSRPs set at $179.99 for 1TB, $279.99 for 2TB, and $549.99 for 4TB.
The top-tier 8TB version of the SN8100 is expected to release later in the year.
Additionally, a heatsink-equipped variant is also expected to launch this fall for all current capacities, priced at a $20 premium.
These models will feature a newly designed passive aluminum heatsink with a low-profile form factor and customizable RGB lighting.

  • Games Inbox: What will the GTA 6 collector’s edition be like?

GTA 6 – this art might make a good statue (Rockstar Games)
The Wednesday letters page tries to imagine what the PS6 launch line-up will look like, as one reader is glad about the wait between Persona sequels.
To join in with the discussions yourself email gamecentral@metro.co.uk
    Early access
So, I see Doom: The Dark Ages is another of these games where you can pay for a collector’s edition to play it a few days early.
I’m not sure what difference that is supposed to make, especially in a single-player only game, but there’s always someone that will pay for these things.I’m not complaining but I am wondering what’s going to happen with GTA 6.
There’s already rumours it’s going to cost £100 or more but what are the special editions going to cost? I would bet a lot of money that one of them is going to let you play the game a week early, or whatever, and how much is that going to be? £150?
Then there’ll be the super special edition with a statue of Jason and Lucia, for £300 or something crazy.
I’m honestly curious to see how far they’ll push it, and I’m going to guess it’ll be pretty far.Gogol
    Interactive movies
I noticed the news that Netflix has removed Bandersnatch and all their other interactive shows from the service.
I have no idea why you’d want to do that but I’m guessing that means they weren’t as successful as they hoped. That surprises me, as I thought Black Mirror: Bandersnatch worked really well, and I don’t usually like these sorts of FMV style games.
I’m sure it helps that Charlie Brooker knows his stuff when it comes to games, but I always imagined that that sort of thing would be how video game movies would be handled in the future.
You already have games like Until Dawn, that are basically semi-interactive movies where the only important things you’re doing is making simple choices.
Surely that’d be easy to replicate on a smartphone app when you’re watching a movie.
Not for anything good, obviously, but for something dumb like Minecraft I would’ve thought it’d be a good idea.
Instead, they made a movie of Until Dawn and not only was it not interactive it had almost nothing in common with the game.
Maybe it’s all too much effort, when people will go and watch rubbish anyway, but it seems like a missed opportunity to me.Norris
    No Redemption
I am glad to see there’s others who never really got the whole GTA phenomenon.I also add Red Dead Redemption to this list of games I simply didn’t understand the fascination with.
I tried several times with Red Dead Redemption as everyone insisted it was amazing, but even zombies couldn’t make it fun for me.
I am not bothered by the violence, but didn’t find the humour that funny and it felt more like someone trying too hard to be clever and not actually making real social observations.
I found the missions repetitive and the controls awful.
    Each to their own though.Kiran

    Launch explosion
I heard from a friend in retail that although Nintendo Switch 2 pre-orders have all sold out there should be a big delivery of stock ready for day one purchase in stores (at the big retailers at least – he works for one of Argos distribution centres). At time of writing, 4.35pm Tuesday, Very has Switch 2 bundles available but not the console on its own.
You can get the Mario Kart World pack with Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom or a Sandisk SD card.
Prices around £477 to £494.Mark Matthews
GC: Thanks for the latter in particular, we credited you in our story about it.
    Take your time
It’s crazy how long it takes between Persona sequels, but I’m not against it.
I’d much rather have five really good games (can’t pretend I’ve played the first two) than a dozen okay or bad ones, but as far as I know Atlus has kept up the quality impressively well over the years.I could do without all the spin-offs though.
I’m not aware that any of them have ever been any good and I think their time is much better spent on things like Metaphor: ReFantazio, which was excellent.
Would much rather have seen a few of those – meaning original games in roughly the same style – than a bunch of half-assed tactics games and Dynasty Warriors crossovers.Lossy
    Paying the rent
Interesting discussion of whether the Nintendo Switch 2 is being sold at loss and while there doesn’t seem to be any exact agreement it’s obvious they’re not making a massive profit on the console itself.I think people often forget that games is all Nintendo do.
They’re not Microsoft, or even Sony, where if their games division has a bad generation, they can just lean on something else in the meantime.
Making their games and consoles a success, and profitable, is a matter of life and death for Nintendo.
Before you complain, I’m not trying to excuse Nintendo for the price rises but at least with them I understand them.
Especially as they have this ‘dynamic’ pricing where Mario Kart and Donkey Kong are different prices, so I believe they’re not trying to be too outrageous.
Obviously, Mario Kart World is more expensive because they know that’s the one everyone wants but I don’t feel like that’s not the most anti-consumer thing they’ve ever done.
And certainly not compared to other companies.
Somewhere, someone at Take-Two is trying to work out what’s the maximum they can charge for GTA 6 and they are not going to care at all if that means lots of people cannot afford it.
That doesn’t make sense to me, because surely the more people that can buy it the more money they make.
But I guess they figure people are going to be saving up to afford whatever it costs.
I don’t think we’re at that stage yet for Nintendo games and hopefully we never will be, but gaming is definitely getting more expensive at the moment.Lester
    Pass it forward
After completing Dungeons Of Hinterberg the devs asked me to pass on the message if I enjoyed it.
I really liked it and will direct readers to your review.I played it on Game Pass but after being an Xbox Series X/S console exclusive it came to PlayStation 4 and 5 a few months ago and is £18, I got 20 hours from it.
No Switch version, maybe it’ll be on Switch 2 as it seems a perfect fit for the device.Simundo
    Change is coming
Horizon Zero Dawn 3 is obviously coming, I don’t think there’s any doubt of that, but what I’m more interested in, from the latest leak, is exactly what the PlayStation 6 is going to be.
Surely it can’t be just another plastic box to go under the TV? The improvement in graphics is going to be far too small to justify that.Maybe it’s a portable but I can’t imagine Sony making their new console less powerful than their previous one.
The probably should, but I just don’t think they’re that bold.
So, are they going to launch their new console and treat it like any other? Will there be two or three first party games, with impressive graphics, and a promise of lots more to come? Because if there was that would be a massive turnaround from how things are at the moment.
Maybe that is how it’ll be.
Maybe they’ll just pretend this half of the generation never happened and they’ll just carry on like before.
I’d welcome it, and it’s not like they do interviews or anything anymore, to explain themselves or be confronted for their bad decisions.
I don’t know what route they’ll choose but at this point anything they do is going to come across as strange and out of character.
How can Sony be so dominant and yet seem so out of control, all at the same time?Boko

What a horrible story, selling your friend a Switch 2 for £600.
I wouldn’t dream of ripping off any friends, I would just let them have the pre-order for the price I paid.
More to life than money, the guy has questionable morals!AnonGC: Isn’t that for his friend to decide?
Although I understand the reader complaining about FromSoftware making too many multiplayer games I think we’ve just got to accept that’s what they want to do at the moment.
We really shouldn’t be complaining that developers are making something they’re passionate about, rather than an easy sequel.Tacle

Games Inbox: What will the GTA 6 collector’s edition be like?
GTA 6 – this art might make a good statue (Rockstar Games) The Wednesday letters page tries to imagine what the PS6 launch line-up will look like, as one reader is glad about the wait between Persona sequels. To join in with the discussions yourself email gamecentral@metro.co.uk Early access So, I see Doom: The Dark Ages is another of these games where you can pay for a collector’s edition to play it a few days early. I’m honestly curious to see how far they’ll push it, and I’m going to guess it’ll be pretty far.Gogol Interactive movies I noticed the news that Netflix has removed Bandersnatch and all their other interactive shows from the service. Lexar SL600 Blaze – Best 20Gbps external SSD for gaming

    Pros
    Good 20Gbps performer
    Top bang for the buck
    Five-year warranty

    Cons
    4TB model not yet available

The competition is very close in the top tier of 20Gbps external drives, with the big-name contenders trading wins up and down the benchmark charts.
But a winner is a winner, and in the end, the Lexar overtook our previous champ, Crucial’s X10 Pro, even if only by a hair.
The upshot is that you can expect excellent performance from the Lexar SL600.
It also comes in a uniquely shaped form factor, complete with an opening to accommodate a lanyard, for easy toting.
Gamers might appreciate that you can even add some bling by opting for the SL660 variant, which features RGB lighting within its miniature handle.
The drive comes with the standard five year warranty.
When performance is this closely matched among products, the determining factor should be price.
And here, too, the SL600 is neck-and-neck with the Crucial X10 Pro, and priced slightly to significantly cheaper than some of its competitors, at least as of this writing — particularly at the 2TB level.

Teamgroup M200 – Best budget 20Gbps external SSD for gaming

    Pros
    Fast everyday performance
Available in up to 8TB (eventually) capacity
    Attractively styled

    Cons
    No TBW rating
Company will change components if shortages demand
Writes slow to 200MBps off cache

The Teamgroup M200 provides excellent bang for your buck with 20Gbps transfer rates and up to 4TB of storage for a very reasonable price.
It has great everyday performance, too.

Its slick military-style design is based on the CheyTac M200 sniper rifle—a perfect fit for those late night frag sessions.
Unfortunately, Teamgroup doesn’t provide a TBW rating or official IP rating for the M200 so it’s more difficult to compare it as a whole to its competitors.
However the M200 is a fast, extremely well priced external SSD with a gamer-friendly design that will look good and perform well in almost any setup.

If you tend to take your gaming drive everywhere, and/or you’re not the most careful person with hardware, a ruggedized external SSD is a practical answer.

The PNY RP60 offers more than just a rugged IP65-rated exterior that protects against dust and water droplets; and while very handsome and lightweight to boot; the drive is also an admirable performer, even besting one of the fastest 20Gbps drives we’ve tested — the Crucial X10 Pro — in a couple of our tests.
The RP60 is also competitively priced at $100 and $180 for 1TB and 2TB, respectively.

If you’re after a very small SSD that you can easily fit into a pocket, the Sabrent Rocket Nano V2 is that.
This USB 3.2×2 20Gbps drive measures a petite 2.73 inches long, 1.16-inches wide, and 0.44-inches thick.
It weighs a dainty 1.7 ounces.
Of course, you’ll probably want to slide on its included shock-absorbing silicone jacket (shown in picture), which will add .06 inches to all its dimensions, while giving it a badass look.
But looks aside, the Nano V2 is a solid performer.
It wasn’t quite at the same level as our top picks in everything, but it traded wins and losses within the pack.
For instance it was second only to the Crucial X10 Pro in our 450GB write test.
And it took the top spot in CrystalDiskMark 8’s random writes, and was very competitive in random reads.

This wee drive also comes in up to 4TB capacities, making it an all-around good choice if you’re looking to get a lot of storage and performance in a tiny package.

Adata SE920 EX – Best USB 4 external SSD for gaming

    Pros
Fastest external storage we’ve tested (at 40Gbps)
    Affordable for the ilk
    Stylish enclosure
    Available up to 4TB
    Also fast on the Mac

    Cons
    Pricier than USB 3.2×2 (20Gbps)

A USB 4 external SSD isn’t for everyone.
Not only does your PC need to support the spec in order to take advantage of the 40Gbps transfers, but you’ll also need to be willing to pay a premium for the privilege.

If you’re ready to enter the club, however, the Adata SE920 EX will reward you with the fastest USB 4 performance that we’ve experienced, and at a much more affordable price than our previous pick for USB 4, the OWC Express 1M2 — we’re talking $180 for a 1TB Adata SE920 versus $250 for the OWC drive.
And if you want a lot of capacity, the Adata SE920 EX comes with up to 4TB, for a reasonable $500 (compared to OWC’s $598.99).
In almost every benchmark, the SE920 EX beat the OWC Express 1M2 at 40Gbps performance, albeit by small margins.
It also comes with a nifty built-in fan, which is activated by sliding open the enclosure.
This kept our drive noticeably free of heat during our benchmark tests.
The SE920 EX is also quite portable at 4.13 inches long by 2.52-inches wide by 0.62-inches thick, and weighing 7 ounces — another advantage it has over the bulkier OWC Express 1M2.
In the end, the choice for a USB 4 external SSD is clear.
Alternative option: You can get record-breaking performance by rolling your own USB 4 external SSD, using Ugreen’s CM642 enclosure.
In our tests, the $110 enclosure combined with an NVMe SSD bested the performance of the two external USB 4 SSDs above.

    Other external drive reviews:
Sandisk Extreme Pro SSD with USB4: There’s a lot to like about this rugged, handsome design and relative affordability.
But connection issues and comparably lackluster 40Gbps performance left me unamazed.
PNY Pro Elite V3: This 10Gbps, Type-C USB stick is fast, but what really won me over is its clever, retracting physical design and svelte form-factor.
Addlink P21: Good 20Gbps performance and a striking design are a winning formula for this external SSD.
Seagate Ultra Compact SSD: This 10Gbps USB thumb drive delivers far better performance than generic 5Gbps or 400Mbps types, as well as free data recovery and other software perks.
Corsair EX400U: While Corsair’s EX400U is on the slow side for a USB4 external SSD, it’s also less expensive than the competition.
Ugreen CM642 USB4: Fast, handsome, rugged, and easy to use, Ugreen’s CM642 USB4 SSD enclosure is a great way to roll your own high-performance external storage.
Corsair Flash Survivor: If you’re after an eminently portable USB stick with 10Gbps/NVMe speed that’s also weatherproofed, ruggedized, and looks burly as hell, this is the drive for you.
Seagate Game Drive SSD: Targeted at PS4/PS5 owners, the 10Gbps SSD is very fast for its class, and attractively styled, complete with a Playstation logo, but it’s relatively pricey.
Lexar Armor 700: Like the PNY RP60 above, the Lexar Armor 700 is a 20Gbps drive that can withstand some abuse — perfect for the gamer on the go, or the accident-prone.
Its IP66 weatherized body is attractive, its performance is competitive.
    It’s also a bit pricey.
Teamgroup PD20M: This little 20Gbps drive comes with a handy travel case and is one of the lightest portable drives we’ve tested.
The only problem is, its performance slows considerably once its 20GB of cache has been tapped.
    Best for light-duty chores.

Adata SD810: This is a solid 20Gbps drive, as long as you aren’t in the habit of writing very large amounts of data to it on a regular basis, because in our tests, the drive slowed down considerably in that scenario.
That being said, the 4TB capacity is a particularly good value at just $300.
Lexar SL500: A stablemate of the Lexar SL600 — our pick for best 20Gbps external drive — the SL500 stands out for its very slim and attractive form factor.
It has almost identical performance to the SL600, with the exception of performing slower than its sibling in our 48GB file writes.

    How we test
Drive tests currently utilize Windows 11, 64-bit running on an X790 (PCIe 4.0/5.0) motherboard/i5-12400 CPU combo with two Kingston Fury 32GB DDR5 4800MHz modules (64GB of memory total).
Both 20Gbps USB and Thunderbolt 4 are integrated to the back panel and Intel CPU/GPU graphics are used.
The 48GB transfer tests utilize an ImDisk RAM disk taking up 58GB of the 64GB of total memory.
The 450GB file is transferred from a 2TB Samsung 990 Pro which also runs the OS.
Each test is performed on a newly formatted and TRIM’d drive so the results are optimal.
Note that in normal use, as a drive fills up, performance may decrease due to less NAND for secondary caching, as well as other factors.
This can be less of a factor with the current crop of SSDs with far faster late-generation NAND.
Caveat: The performance numbers shown apply only to the drive we were shipped and to the capacity tested.
SSD performance can and will vary by capacity due to more or fewer chips to shotgun reads/writes across and the amount of NAND available for secondary caching. Vendors also occasionally swap components.
If you ever notice a large discrepancy between the performance you experience and that which we report, by all means, let us know.

Best external SSD for gaming 2025: Portable performance drives
Maybe your gaming laptop doesn’t have enough storage. Or you simply want an easy way to make your game library portable. An external SSD can fix both of these issues (and more) by providing an easy way to expand storage that you can take on the go. But choosing an external SSD means sorting through a dizzying array of options, and making a poor choice can leave you feeling hard done by. Lucky for you, we’ve done the testing and can offer some sure-fire recommendations that are guaranteed to help, and not hinder, your gaming setup. Why you should trust us: We are PCWorld. Our reviewers have been putting computer hardware through its paces for decades. Our external drive evaluations are thorough and rigorous, testing the limits of every product — from performance benchmarks to the practicalities of regular use. As consumers ourselves, we know what makes a product exceptional. For more about our testing process, scroll to the bottom of this article. Scroll below our recommendations to learn about other external SSDs for gaming that did not make our list. Lexar SL600 Blaze – Best 20Gbps external SSD for gaming Pros Good 20Gbps performer Top bang for the buck Five-year warranty Cons 4TB model not yet available The competition is very close in the top tier of 20Gbps external drives, with the big-name contenders trading wins up and down the benchmark charts. Read our full Lexar SL600 20Gbps USB SSD review Teamgroup M200 – Best budget 20Gbps external SSD for gaming Pros Fast everyday performance Available in up to 8TB (eventually) capacity Attractively styled Cons No TBW rating Company will change components if shortages demand Writes slow to 200MBps off cache The Teamgroup M200 provides excellent bang for your buck with 20Gbps transfer rates and up to 4TB of storage for a very reasonable price. Following the recent leak on Amagon German, SanDisk is officially unveiling the SN8100, the first WD_BLACK PCIe Gen5 SSD.
It is now available for purchase in three storage configurations and with or without a pre-applied heatsink.
The SN8100 uses four PCIe Gen5 lanes to achieve sequential read speeds of up to 14,900MB/s and write speeds of up to 14,000MB/s.
Random read-write speeds are rated at over 2.3M IOPS in higher-spec models.
Of course, these speeds are only possible on systems with PCIe Gen5 motherboards and processors, even though the drive is backward-compatible with Gen4 and Gen3 boards.
In addition to record-breaking speeds (at least according to SanDisk), the SN8100 boasts improved efficiency over the company's PCIe Gen4 models (up to 100%) and an average operating power of 7W.

    Storage options include 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB.
The first two are available for purchase now, while the 4TB variant is coming early next month.
SanDisk offers the SN8100 with or without a pre-applied heatsink, which bumps the price by $20.
As a bonus, you get some RTB lights to match the rest of your system.
Speaking of heat, SanDisk claims that the use of TCL 3D CBA (CMOS directly bonded to array) NAND memory, anodized aluminum, and double TIM (thermal interface material) pads helped the company improve performance and reliability while also lowering the drive's profile for better heat dissipation and lower operating temperatures.
Like other modern SSDs, the WD_BLACK SN8100 comes with a limited five-year warranty and up to 2,400 TBW endurance (in the 4TB variant).
