• Meet Tensor Product Attention (TPA): Revolutionizing Memory Efficiency in Language Models
    www.marktechpost.com
Large language models (LLMs) have become central to natural language processing (NLP), excelling in tasks such as text generation, comprehension, and reasoning. However, their ability to handle longer input sequences is limited by significant computational challenges, particularly memory overhead during inference caused by key-value (KV) caches. Since memory requirements scale linearly with sequence length, this limits the maximum context window that models can effectively process. Existing solutions, such as sparse attention mechanisms and off-chip storage, attempt to mitigate this issue but often introduce trade-offs, such as increased latency or the risk of losing important information. Addressing memory consumption without compromising model performance remains a critical challenge in scaling LLMs for practical applications.A team of researchers from Tsinghua University, Shanghai Qi Zhi Institute, UCLA, and TapTap have introduced Tensor Product Attention (TPA), an attention mechanism designed to alleviate the KV cache bottleneck. TPA leverages tensor decompositions to represent queries, keys, and values (QKV) compactly, significantly reducing the KV cache size during inference. By employing contextual low-rank factorization, TPA achieves substantial memory savings while maintaining or improving model performance. Moreover, it integrates seamlessly with Rotary Position Embedding (RoPE), allowing compatibility with widely-used attention-based architectures like LLaMA. This approach enables TPA to serve as a drop-in replacement for multi-head attention (MHA), forming the basis of the Tensor Product Attention Transformer (T6), a sequence modeling architecture that shows notable performance improvements in language modeling tasks.Technical Details and BenefitsTPA introduces a novel approach to factorizing QKV activations dynamically into low-rank components. Unlike static weight factorization techniques like LoRA, TPA generates contextual representations tailored to the input data. Each tokens Q, K, and V components are expressed as a sum of tensor products of latent factors, which are derived through linear projections of the tokens hidden state. This tensor structure facilitates efficient representation and reduces memory usage.A key advantage of TPA is its integration with RoPE. Traditional low-rank methods face challenges with RoPE due to its dependence on relative positional invariance. TPA resolves this by pre-rotating tensor components, enabling efficient caching and inference while preserving positional information. The memory efficiency of TPA is significant. Standard MHA relies on a full-size KV cache proportional to the number of heads and their dimensions, whereas TPA reduces this requirement by caching only the factorized components. This reduction enables the processing of much longer sequences within the same memory constraints, making it particularly effective for applications requiring extended context windows. Results and InsightsThe researchers evaluated TPA on the FineWeb-Edu100B dataset across various language modeling tasks. The Tensor Product Attention Transformer (T6) consistently outperformed baselines, including MHA, Multi-Query Attention (MQA), Grouped Query Attention (GQA), and Multi-head Latent Attention (MLA).In terms of training and validation loss, TPA demonstrated faster convergence and lower final losses compared to its counterparts. For example, in experiments with large-scale models (773M parameters), TPA achieved significantly lower validation losses than MLA and GQA. Additionally, TPA showed superior perplexity results across multiple configurations, highlighting its efficiency and accuracy.Beyond pretraining metrics, TPA performed exceptionally well in downstream tasks such as ARC, BoolQ, HellaSwag, and MMLU. On zero-shot and two-shot prompts, TPA consistently ranked among the best-performing methods, achieving average accuracies of 51.41% and 53.12%, respectively, for medium-sized models. These findings emphasize TPAs capability to generalize across diverse language tasks effectively.ConclusionTensor Product Attention (TPA) addresses the scalability challenges of large language models by introducing a dynamic, low-rank factorization mechanism that reduces the memory footprint of KV caches while maintaining strong performance. Its compatibility with existing architectures and solid results across various benchmarks make it a practical alternative to traditional attention mechanisms. As the need for longer context processing grows in language models, methods like TPA provide an efficient path forward, combining memory efficiency with robust performance for real-world applications.Check out the Paper and GitHub Page. • Save $1,000 Off This Decked Out Alienware Aurora R16 RTX 4090 Gaming PC
    www.ign.com
The best high-end prebuilt PCs command premium prices, but that doesn't mean you can't find great deals that will still save you a lot of money. Right now, Dell is offering an Alienware Aurora R16 GeForce RTX 4090 gaming PC for $3,699.99 after a $1,000 off instant discount. GeForce RTX 4090 graphics cards are actually going back up in price again, and getting a standalone card will run you at least $2,000 from a legitimate vendor, which means building your own DIY PC may not be as cost effective as you'd think. Plus, you have the advantage of an all-inclusive warranty with a prebuilt PC.Alienware Aurora R16 RTX 4090 Gaming PCAlienware Aurora R16 i9-14900KF RTX 4090 Gaming PCThis Alienware Aurora R16 gaming PC is equipped with an Intel Core i9-14900KF CPU, GeForce RTX 4090 GPU, 64GB of DDR5-5200MHz RAM, and a 4TB NVMe SSD. The 14th gen Intel Core i9-14900KF is the best Intel gaming CPU you can get right now, and it's also a productivity beast. The chip is known to run pretty hot, but fortunately it's cooled by a robust 240mm all-in-one liquid cooler. The entire system is powered by an 1,000W 80PLUS Platinum power supply. The RTX 4090 is likewise the most powerful GPU on the market. No other video card, either from NVIDIA or from AMD, comes close. In his RTX 4090 review, Chris Coke writes "The RTX 4090 may be huge and expensive, but holy smokes if it doesnt blow the competition out of the water... Until the rest of the pack can catch up, between its impressive hardware specs and its DLSS 3 AI wizardry, even the $1,599 price doesnt seem unreasonable for the unrivaled frame rates that this card can crank out." You'll be able to run any game in 4K with ultra settings and ray tracing enabled and still pump out high framerates, even the newest, most demanding titles like Black Myth: Wukong or Warhammer Space Marine 2.The 4090 is also the consumer card of choice for AI thanks to its 24GB of GDDR6X VRAM.A note on RTX 5000 series GPUsNVIDIA's newest generation of GPUs are set to be released starting the end of January. The RTX 5090 will undoubtedly be a more powerful card, but you'd have to be willing to pay a lot more money for that kind of power. Retail price is set to be $2,000 for the Founder's Edition at launch, but availability will definitely be an issue. The RTX 5080 will launch at a retail price of $999 but again there may be availability issues. We'll be sure to bench this card soon, but it will have less VRAM than the 4090 (16GB vs 24GB) and probably won't quite replace the 4090 as the dominant number two card.A note on Alienware's newest "R16" desktop chassisThe R16 is Alienware's 2024 desktop PC design. It's 40% smaller in volume compared to previous iterations. It features a simple yet proven airflow pattern; air is drawn in through the side intake vents over the GPU area and a 120mm fan at the front of the case, and exhausts by way of a 120mm rear fan and two 120mm top fans. A 240mm radiator for the all-in-one liquid cooling system is mounted to these top fans. Some configurations don't actually include the liquid cooling system, but we rarely include them in this roundup. That's because Alienware's liquid cooling solution is far superior to their stock air cooling and is easily worth the price premium. Note that Dell announced a new Area 51 chassis during CES 2025, but it looks very similar in appearance and design to the R16 chassis. Why Should You Trust IGN's Deals Team?IGN's deals team has a combined 30+ years of experience finding the best discounts in gaming, tech, and just about every other category. 9to5mac.com
This week Apple TV+ is celebrating two big moments: the return of Severance plus Silos season 2 finale. But now some not-so-positive news has emerged: comedy Dick Turpin has been unexpectedly canceled.Dick Turpin canceled at Apple TV+ after star pulls outThe Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin is a comedy series that first debuted on Apple TV+ in early 2024.Its first season was generally well received by critics, and while audience response seemed muted, Apple picked it up for a second season. But recently, The Sun reported that season 2 had been abruptly canceled well into production. Now, a new report details why.Rod McPhee writes for The Sun:Noel Fieldings multi-million pound comedy The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin has been axed mid-production after he failed to come to work. The Great British Bake Offand Never Mind the Buzzcocks star played the lead role of the legendary highwayman in the show which had its first series onAppleTV+ lastspring. While the phrase failed to come to work surely evokes lot of interested viewership, reading further reveals the story is not so simple. The article explains: Creatives, cast and crew this week received the devastatingnewsthis week, and were simply told it was down to the illness of a key cast member.Fieldings reported illness seems to have led him to pull out of the series. And without its central star, Apple TV+ had little choice but to cancel the show.Of course, there are plenty of questions raised by this story that we dont have answers for. Why, for example, could Dick Turpins shooting not have been delayed to a later date? Why did the series need to be canceled? We may never know. But fans of the shows first season will now likely never see it return. Are you disappointed by Dick Turpin being canceled? • Congress Alarmed at Elon Musk's Plan to Cancel NASA Moon Landing
    futurism.com
"To bypass the Moon would be a mistake."Distract, Divert, DefundCongress is none too pleased after SpaceX CEO and unelected official Elon Musk declared that the "Moon is a distraction" and that NASA should instead be going "straight to Mars."AsPolitico reports, lawmakers who control NASA's budget are prepared to fight back against Musk's apparent plan to kibosh the space agency's forthcoming lunar landing in favor of his long-running Martian dreams.Though Musk previously criticized the lunar mission as a "jobs-maximizing program, not a results-maximizing program," the soon-to-be head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) hasn't mentioned specifically that Artemis is massively over-budget and behind schedule to boot.Mark Kelly, a former astronaut who was briefly considered a contender for the Democratic vice presidential nod, suggested that investment continues to make the program worthwhile."We have put a lot of time, effort, and money into Artemis," the Arizona representative told the magazine, "and I think we should allow NASA to complete that mission."Rep. Brian Babin, a Texas Republican who leads the House's space committee, agreed from across the aisle."To bypass the Moon would be a mistake," Babin reckoned in an interview withPolitico.Curious SilenceThus far, president-elect Donald Trump hasn't joined the fray over NASA's Moon mission, which launched its first uncrewed craft in 2022 and is slated to put human boots on lunar soil this decade for the first time in more 50 years. After pushing NASA to get back to the Moon by 2024 during his first presidency, Trump hasshown interest in the space agency going to Mars since kindling his on-off bromance with Musk.Given the real estate mogul's propensity to agree with either whoever spoke to him most recently or whoever fawns over him the most, there's little doubt that Musk could sway the president-elect to go forth with his Martian pet project over the costly lunar mission.Should that be the case, however, Congress won't likely go down without a fight."There would be a lot of congressional resistance," Casey Drier, the head of space policy at the nonprofit Planetary Society, told Politico.Never one to back down from a battle, Musk has, asPolitico notes, threatened to primary any Republicans who oppose Trump's cabinet nominations and there's no reason he couldn't exert similar pressure on his Mars-over-Moon agenda.More on Musk's politicking: MAGA Figures Turn on Elon Musk for Not Hating Immigrants EnoughShare This Article

  • European Privacy Group Sues TikTok and AliExpress for Illicit Data Transfers to China
    thehackernews.com
Jan 17, 2025Ravie LakshmananPrivacy / Data ProtectionAustrian privacy non-profit None of Your Business (noyb) has filed complaints accusing companies like TikTok, AliExpress, SHEIN, Temu, WeChat, and Xiaomi of violating data protection regulations in the European Union by unlawfully transferring users' data to China. The advocacy group is seeking an immediate suspension of such transfers, stating the companies in question cannot shield user data from being potentially accessed by the Chinese government. The complaints have been filed in Austria, Belgium, Greece, Italy, and the Netherlands."Given that China is an authoritarian surveillance state, it is crystal clear that China doesn't offer the same level of data protection as the E.U.," Kleanthi Sardeli, data protection lawyer at noyb, said. "Transferring Europeans' personal data is clearly unlawful and must be terminated immediately."Noyb noted that the companies have no choice but to comply with Chinese authorities' requests for access to data, and that Beijing lacks an independent data protection authority to raise issues related to government surveillance. It also said none of the companies responded to its access requests under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) to seek clarity on the nature of data transfers, and if they are transmitted to China or any other country outside of the E.U."According to their privacy policy, AliExpress, SHEIN, TikTok, and Xiaomi transfer data to China," noyb said. "Temu and WeChat mention transfers to third countries. According to Temu and WeChat's corporate structure, this most likely includes China."The development comes as ByteDance-owned TikTok is preparing to shut down its app in the U.S. starting January 19, 2025, when a federal ban on the social media platform is scheduled to come into effect. In recent months, noyb has filed GDPR-related complaints against Google, Microsoft, and Mozilla for tracking users without consent through Privacy Sandbox, Xandr, and Firefox, respectively.FTC Takes Actions Against General Motors and GoDaddyThe complaints also coincide with the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) banning automaker General Motors from disclosing data that it collects from drivers, including geolocations and driver behavior information, to consumer reporting agencies for five years for sharing such data without their affirmative consent.According to a New York Times investigation in March 2024, the information was shared with two data brokers, LexisNexis Risk Solutions and Verisk, that worked with the insurance industry to generate risk profiles and increase auto insurance rates for some drivers. In a statement, General Motors said it had already discontinued the "Smart Driver" data collection program in April 2024 "due to customer feedback." The company said customers could access and delete their personal information through a U.S. Consumer Privacy Request Form on its website. The FTC has also ordered website hosting provider GoDaddy to implement a comprehensive information security program to overhaul its "unreasonable security practices" that led to multiple customer data breaches between 2019 and 2022. GoDaddy has not admitted to any wrongdoing, nor has it been fined."GoDaddy has failed to implement reasonable and appropriate security measures to protect and monitor its website-hosting environments for security threats, and misled customers about the extent of its data security protections on its website hosting services," the FTC said. The agency pointed out that GoDaddy failed to properly manage its assets and inventory; patch its software; assess risks to its hosting services; use multi-factor authentication; log security-related events; monitor for security threats; segment its network; and secure connections to services providing access to consumer data. The consumer protection agency has since also announced amendments to online privacy safeguards for children under the Children's Online Privacy Protection Rule (COPPA) that require obtaining verifiable parental consent prior to processing their data for advertising purposes or sharing it with third-parties.Furthermore, the rule imposes new data retention policies, necessitating that companies only retain children's information "for as long as reasonably necessary to fulfill a specific purpose for which it was collected." "By requiring parents to opt in to targeted advertising practices, this final rule prohibits platforms and service providers from sharing and monetizing children's data without active permission," FTC Chair Lina M. Khan said.Found this article interesting? Follow us on Twitter and LinkedIn to read more exclusive content we post.SHARE

  • I knew one day Id have to watch powerful men burn the world down I just didnt expect them to be such losers
    www.theguardian.com
I dont know if anyone else has noticed this but everything seems to be going down the tubes quite fast. And not fun tubes, like at a waterpark. The ending in shit kind. The issues are complicated, the reasons diverse, but there are a few culprits who have been making themselves extremely visible.Alongside those holding political office, tech gragillionnaires (I had to invent a new number) like Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg obviously wield huge global influence with their computers and numbers and whatnot. There has been a lot written about them and there will be more, as they continue to shape the world and win favour with Donald Trump. Big, scary, probably ruinous things lie ahead. But Im here to discuss the smaller part. The insult to injury, the sprinkling of salt in the wound.Whether I am engaging with the news, or with Musk tweeting constantly like a man with no job or friends, or with Zuckerbergpainfully cringe.I knew that one day we might have to watch as capitalism and greed and bigotry led to a world where powerful men, deserving or not, would burn it all down. What I didnt expect, and dont think I could have foreseen, is how incredibly cringe it would all be. I have been prepared for evil, for greed, for cruelty, for injustice but I did not anticipate that the people in power would also be such huge losers.Ive always been someone who cannot tolerate embarrassment. I hate being embarrassed more than just about any other emotion and Ive always skipped content based on cringe humour like Meet the Parents, Borat or Nathan for You. It makes my skin crawl and it makes the contents of my stomach try to crawl out of my mouth. But I cannot skip world events.Nor can I skip Musks clear desperation, even as he holds this much wealth and power in his hands, to be thought of as cool. There are endless examples of him embarrassing himself while attempting to be funny or to gain respect. Unfortunately, while you may be able to buy power, its impossible to buy a good personality. Watching his Nigel-no-friends attempts to be popular, his endless pathetic tweets that read as though they come from the brain of an 11-year-old poser, has made me start to believe we should bring back bullying. If yet another humiliating report in the last couple of days is to be believed, he appears even to have lost the respect of some of his gamer audience, who the report claims suspect that he may have been lying about his achievements in hardcore gaming (cursed sentence).Zuckerberg is a different kind of cringe but cringe all the same. His cringe moments drip through more sparingly but, when they do, my body tries to turn inside out at my bellybutton. His physical makeover for Maga reasons, performing music because no one will stop him, trying to look cool on a surfboard all these are extremely difficult to watch. He has been trying to suck up to Trump, going on Joe Rogans show to say society has been neutered and companies need more masculine energy.Putting on what is clearly a bro disguise to join the boys club and sit at the big boy table it should feel humiliating. This came as Zuckerberg rolled back hate speech and factchecking rules at Meta, in a clear swerve to the right before Trumps inauguration. What could be more masculine and cool than selling out vulnerable communities and women to impress the alpha male?Climate crises keep coming, genocides continue, women keep getting murdered, art is being strangled to death by AI, bigotry is on the rise, social progress is being rolled back AND these men insist on being cringe? Its a rotten cherry on top. This combination of evil and embarrassment is a unique horror, one that science fiction has failed to prepare us for. The second-hand embarrassment we have to endure gets even more potent when combined with other modern influences on young men, like Jordan Peterson and Andrew Tate.Peterson is a big voice in mens rights well, a small Kermits voice in mens rights and hes also an embarrassment. So much so that he has his own Know Your Meme page, which covers that time hereportedly retweeted an image from a fetish film, apparently believing it was a Chinese communist sperm extraction facility. He deleted it shortly afterwards.Tate is facing human trafficking charges but rose to fame as a voice for young men, a misogynist in bad outfits who does really cool things like smoking cigars, wearing sunnies inside and trying to drag human rights back 100 years.Living your life to impress other men by hating women is one of the most embarrassing things I can imagine. Looking up to any of these men for how to live your life is even sadder.Ive worked hard to keep these kinds of men out of my personal life, to keep them away from me, out of my goddamn sight. Now they are in my face daily, not only influencing the world for the worse but making me nauseous at how uncool and pathetic they are, on top of their other sins. Its too much, I cant take it, there needs to be a change. Its time for us to start getting revenge on the nerds.Rebecca Shaw is a writer based in Sydney

  • Switch 2 Supply Chain Figures Reportedly Revealed Ahead Of 2025 Launch
    www.nintendolife.com
Image: NintendoAs exciting as new console launches are, it's become increasingly difficult in recent years to secure certain systems on release. Sony's PlayStation 5 was hugely impacted by this coming off the pandemic, so how will it be for Nintendo's Switch successor this many years on?Bloomberg has released a new report about the possible shipment data for the Switch 2 in the first year of its life, and according to Robin Zhu - an analyst at Sanford C. Bernstein, Nintendo's supply chain is ready to sell more than 20 million units in 2025.In comparison, the original Switch shifted around 15 million units in its opening year, but the Switch 2 launch will now be nearly a decade later. During the Switch's beginnings, the company was also still recovering from its troubled Wii U generation all while extending the life of its 3DS just in case. Now that the Switch has proven itself (shifting over 146 million units globally), there's likely a lot more confidence within Nintendo about the system's successor - so if this figure from Bloomberg's source is accurate, hopefully, it means we don't have to worry as much about acquiring these new hybrid units when the release date is announced and pre-orders go live.Of course, one thing we also don't know just yet is the price of the Switch 2 - which will likely be a deciding factor for many fans. There have already been all sorts of price estimates and predictions based on the rumoured technology inside of Nintendo's new hardware, so hopefully the upcoming Direct presentation confirms this.
